Welcome, introduce yourself! (Week of Apr 5th)

Rosie here -- the Indie Hackers community manager. Welcome! 👋

This short guide is meant to help you get the most out of Indie Hackers.

First, introduce yourself!

Indie Hackers is a community of people helping each other build profitable businesses and side projects. The key word here is "community." Don't be shy!

For starters, take a second to introduce yourself and share your goals in the comments below. 👇

Just say a few words about who you are, why you're here, and what you hope to accomplish or learn in 2020.

Take a moment to say hello to someone else as well!

Dive into learning.

We've interviewed hundreds of successful indie hackers. I recommend reading a few of their stories. It's a great way to get an overview of what's possible.

@csallen also puts out podcast episodes if reading isn't your thing!

Next, get started!

There's no time like the present. Check out the "Start Here" page for a list of practical steps and articles that can help you take action.

Not only will it help you get started, but it should also introduce you to some of the best parts of the Indie Hackers community.

This is just the tip of the iceberg! If you're ever feeling lost or confused, post in the Meta group or tag me (@rosiesherry) in any comment or post.

Don't forget to introduce yourself and say hi to someone else below! 🤗

Hi, I'm Steven. I'm from the San Francisco Bay Area but also lived in Boston for 10 years (went to college there) and New York for 2 years. I'm 40 with 3 kids. I was a private equity investor for 12 years before realizing that's not what I wanted to do with my life. I've been an Indie Hacker for 4 years now. My first business got up to $30K in annual revenue before fizzling out for various reasons. Then I joined a couple of friends to work on their mobile app business. Over the past few years, I've built up a generalist skillset which includes front-end development, design, marketing, and content creation.

For the past few months, I've been working on a new project which is a task/project/time-tracking app focused on individual productivity (not teams). I know everyone says not to build one of those, but I've tried every app under the sun and haven't found one that works for me. Plus I think I have a lot of good ideas on how my app will be better than existing solutions, and also how to market it differently. But whether that's really true only time will tell.

My goal is to launch a private alpha by May 31, a private beta by June 30, public beta by July 31, go live by August 31 and hopefully have meaningful revenue by the end of the year.

    1. 3

Steven best of luck on your app!

      1. 1

Thanks! Luck is always a useful commodity to have 🙂

    2. 2

sounds like the same shit i'm building but for a company and industry specific.

      1. 1

Productivity is such a complex topic and solutions are very user-specific so I think there are a million ways to tackle these problems. Targeting a specific industry is definitely one way to do it.

    3. 1

Notion is destroying this market. just raised 50 mil at a 2 billion valuation. (during COVID)

Happy to test if you want!

      1. 1

Thanks for the offer! I'll follow up with you when it's ready to test.

I'm pretty familiar with Notion, and I'm not too concerned (for now). As it stands I think Notion is more weighted towards note-taking/data management rather than task/time management. My experience with Notion was:

        • It's a super-powerful, customizable app for notes and data. Kind of like a cross between Evernote and Airtable.
        • But task management is pretty basic (for now).
        • And ime tracking doesn't exist (yet).
        • There are so many features and the ability to customize is so extensive that it made the learning curve was pretty steep – at least for me.
    4. 1

Love the idea. Have you thought of gamifying (https://gametize.com/index I don't know if there is an open source version of this) the platform?

      1. 1

        Thanks!

The short answer is yes, I plan to use some form of gamification in my app. But I need to think a bit more about how to do it effectively. In my experience, gamification can be a distraction and potentially lead to the wrong incentives.

    5. 1

I love how you have clearly set goals! And best of luck with your project!

      1. 1

Thanks! Now let's see if I can stick to them. Good luck with your project too!

    6. 1

I would love to join your private beta... sign me up!

      1. 1

Great! I'll let you know when it's ready.

    7. 1

i'm glad you're here! i've done similar things! i've built myself a number of those single-serve, to do list apps as well... and they work!

build for yourself. there's always a market later.

      1. 2

Thanks for the encouragement! I love how active you are on IH. You really add a lot of positivity and support to this community.

        1. 1

hey~! that makes me smile. thank you for that!

          here's a high-five!

          highfive

          1. 2

            Awesome :)

Now anytime I need a high five, I can just come back to this gif!

            1. 1

lol. seriously. i made that for you!

    8. 1

That's interesting. Will love to know what makes your product differentiated/unique from your competiters that also have project/time tracking app.

      1. 2

I'm designing the app from "first principles" of productivity. So every feature and interaction is designed by starting off with the question, "Why is productivity so hard for a lot of people, and how can I make it easier?" For example, most people hate time tracking and find it difficult to stick with. Yet, managing time is a very important part of productivity. So I'm trying to design a time tracker feature that will make time management easier and maybe even enjoyable to use.

Productivity is a very complicated topic which is why there are so many systems out there like GTD, PARA, Bullet Journal, Action Method, Pomodoro Technique etc., but each system had its pros and cons, and often solves just a part of the productivity problem. It's like the parable of the blind men and the elephant – each system addresses only part of the bigger picture. This may be overly ambitious, but my goal is to create an app that unifies all aspects of productivity into a single tool/app/system. But I still have a lot of work to do to get there.

Thanks for the encouragement! And thanks for letting me know about Resultivity, I'll check it out. I'm always interested to see how other productivity apps work.

Hey everyone, My name is Yahia (you can call me yah). I'm currently a Boston University computer engineering major whos graduating this year (wohooo). I'm going down the software route and have been enjoying it a ton over the past few years.

I recently joined Stock Alarm as VP of Growth and I've been in-charge of growing the company through the development of features (mostly backend) and growth hacks. The coolest thing about this project is that I was a user before I became a member/founder. I used to trade options a ton (like most college kids who have no idea what they're doing) and needed an app that would inform me the second something interesting happened in the market (after all, I had some classes to go to). It's been an awesome journey so far with more to come! (http://stockalarm.io/)

    Nice to meet you all.

    1. 3

Welcome to IH! I think it's incredible how much real experience you're getting while still in college. I wish I had done that!

      1. 2

same, I wish I started while I was in college... you're way ahead of the curve Yahia!

        1. 2

@shwetak Appreciate it a ton, I'd like to think so but really this is just a ton of fun to work on (when it isn't on fire lmao). Thanks!

      2. 1

@stevenkkim Thanks a ton, appreciate the support and it's been an awesome journey so far.

Hello friends! My name is Matt and I am taking advantage of all this extra time by working on a budgeting web app focused at people who are pursuing Financial Independence, Retire Early (FIRE). I currently work at a mid sized company in Northern Virginia and I'm looking forward to joining the community.

Ultimately, my goal with my budgeting web app would be to get enough recurring customers where I can quit my job and work on it full time, but for now a passion project and side project will do.

    Thanks!

    1. 1

Sounds cool. Looking forward to see how the project develops as I'm sure there are a lot of young people looking at this avenue (you'll definitely have to have a crypto currency part;)

  6. 3

Hi! I'm Lee. I'm a software developer from the Huntsville, Alabama area. I've been listening to the Indie Hackers podcast for a while now and am starting to build a Saas idea I've had for a while now. I'm very much looking forward to learning and contributing to this community!

    1. 1

good stuff, keep us posted when you start building it :D

  7. 3

Kenny here! I have been working on a solar marketplace connecting solar installers with solar distributors. I’m excited to join the community!

    1. 2

Hey Kenny, just checked out your site and like what you're doing. I'm creating something similar in the solar space but am focused on the consumer and not the rep but I can definitely see the rep side going more online.

I've been selling solar for 4-years now. Let me know if you need any product knowledge or market research, more than happy to help. Sites looking great. Keep going!

      1. 2

        Hey Chris,
I would like to take you up on your offer, please send me an email so we can schedule a call! [email protected]

    Hi all,

I'm Wadie from Boston! I've been living here for a while now since I moved from Algeria when I was a kid. Currently, I'm working as a product manager for Grubhub but I've worked for a couple of other companies in the Boston area including the likes of Chewy and a startup name Homeyou!

I'm currently learning Python and have a basic understanding of HTML and CSS. I just recently created a project called SalahBar, it's a MacOS menubar app to get today's prayer times right on your desktop. Feel free to check it out at salahbar.com :)

My goal is to continue to learn and grow both in product management and software development and hopefully enable myself to create products that others will find useful.

    Best,

Hello guys, i am Adis, 30 years old, a web developer from Bosnia. I am excited to be part of this community so we can learn from each other, make new friends/business relationships and grow together :)

  10. 2

Hi, I'm Nikolay. I'm a data scientist and a full stack web developer who's passionate about data-driven products. Currently I'm working on routitude.com. It's a travel platform that helps people find optimal destinations for a journey based on their preferences on weather conditions, visa requirements, quality of life statistics, prices and many more. I want to keep learning about all aspects of growing a company from funding to acquiring users. I'm certain Indie Hackers is a great place to do it and I also hope to share my own experience with this great community!

  11. 2

Hey, I am a product manager based out of Germany and trying to launch a new newsletter with the latest product and tech news. I intend to add my opinions an knowledge on what I know about product management, and hopefully build a loyal audience

    1. 1

Hi, sounds interesting! Hope to check it out one day.

  12. 2

Hi all! My name is Aswin. I have done little side hustles like selling tshirts and doing marketing consulting but trying to finally build a product and get it off the ground.

The two things I want to immediately work on:

    1. A personal finance app

I know there are a ton of these out there but I don't really see apps with a financial philosophy. I have set up my system based on Ramit Sethi's IWT philosophies. Basically show people how much they can spend after they drop in their buckets for retirement/savings/bills. Also a way to make credit cards less daunting since you won't spend more than you can afford in a month.

The MVP for this is an Excel spreadsheet.

    2.Niche WeddingWire

I am an Indian Christian and our weddings have some specific vendors and requirements (like a minimum of 300 people).

The MVP for this is a Sharetribe marketplace.

    --My ask of the community!

I want to document my progress on my projects via email and blog. Does anyone have examples of people who do this well?

Thank you! Excited to join IH 😀

Hi all, I’m Annalise, I’m not a developer, though I’ve taught myself enough to understand tech architecture, and defining product strategy towards the vision. I consider failing my first startup, though technically we had a small exit. I’m now on my second, https://chaineapp.com . We haven’t officially launched, but have customers and 6-figure ($) ARR. None of us are taking income and we’re putting the revenue back into the company, all working off equity. We’re starting to grow and happy to talk to folks who are passionate as us about making a difference in the world.. Transportation and logistics workers spend half of their work day doing repetitive communication; writing the same email, answering the same questions on the phone, using g-chat, slack, Front.  Additionally, knowledge workers spend 61% of their day navigating through multiple systems , planning and scheduling work (McKinsey), rather than the work they’re supposed to do. We help knowledge workers eliminate the redundancies through process automation, multi-channel inboxes, and all-in-one operating system customizable to their workflows and SOPs. I feel like I have a wealth of knowledge to share from startup prospective but that’s a drop in the ocean in terms of how much I have yet to learn. I’m on here to network, share info, connect with like -minded individuals. If you’re passionate and can code, happy to discuss options to work with us on equity. We’re a bunch of Indie Hackers that are trying to make a difference in this world. We all believe we have a purpose and can make an impact by first creating an extremely valuable business and a delightful product. Excited to join Indie Hackers after my co-founder recommended it.

    1. 1

Welcome to IH! 6-figures in ARR before even launching is not a bad start 😉

I don't know much about logistics software but Chaine sounds pretty neat. Good luck!

    2. 1

      Welcome! :) Thanks for sharing!

  15. 2

Thanks @rosiesherry! Been a big time beneficiary from IH as a lurker, so excited to start working with @jcheng45 on Peel, a community platform collecting, sharing and sparking action upon interacting with stories.

    1. 2

Love it when the lurkers make an appearance! :)

    2. 2

same, I've been a long time lurker too! excited to learn more about Peel :)

Hey everyone! My name is Sai and I'm a product manager based out of San Francisco. I have been working on my Indie project (no-code, multi-step white labled form for B2B SaaS Customer Onboarding) for about a year now.

I spent the last 6 years of my career handling different elements of customer onboarding. In one experience, I led an Onboarding team for a Fintech Unicorn. In another, I was responsible for onboarding F500 Brands to a cloud-based call center solution. Finally, I spent the last 3 years of my career building out products to help onboard new customers at a company called Magento (acquired by Adobe in 2018).

Throughout these 6 years, my cofounder and I have launched and scrapped multiple projects because we were unable to get any revenue or traction. This is the first project we've done where things are coming together and we're seeing a positive ROI on our efforts.

What started as a side project has now become my full-time gig after a brief rest & vest period at a Fortune 500. My goals for this project is to bootstrap it to $100k ARR and then raise venture capital to fully build out our vision and own the market we're looking at.

I'm so excited to join this community. I'm happy to provide feedback on customer discovery, finding product market fit, GTM strategies, and anything related to B2B SaaS (i'm a bit of a junky for b2b saas)

    Thanks!

Hi, I'm Ola. Currently working as a data analyst in a top FMCG in Nigeria. I'm on the verge of bailing the corporate world with my boss to find purpose in filling a gap in the retail industry around here. What we are planning to introduce to the market is a real-time-tech-enabled-grocery-shopping-experience by seamlessly integrating an app with the brick and mortar shopping experience most people are comfortable with.

I'm looking forward to learning from the amazing people on this platform through this journey and excited at impacting the world with you all.

    Thank you.

My SaaS startup is called Olive. Olive is a cloud-based case management system for public health and social services. We recently rebranded and we are very excited about the branding as it better fits in better with our product and audience.

I am hoping to learn more from this great community.

Hi, I'm Chaker. I am from Paris and I am an engineering student. I am 21. I am really interested in entrepreneurship. Last year I build a list of ideas of issues/solutions and on July I selected an idea that I have been developing until now.
The idea is simple: we spent countless hours on our computers with bad posture and without making enough pauses to drink water, stretch and rest our eyes.

So I created the BackWatcher desktop app, it uses the webcam to alert the user as soon as he slouches and remind him to make pauses.
The goal of the app is to enable the user to focus on his tasks without worrying anymore about his health.

    the Link--> https://backwatcher.ml

The app is already available on the Windows Store and I got more than 100 downloads.
The challenge now is to get paid subscriptions and build a sustainable acquisition.

I hope to succeed in these challenging tasks before giving up.

Hi, I'm Allen. I'm from India and i'm currently pursuing my Computer Science degree. I'm very much interested in developing a product . But the fact is that not a single striking idea have emerged for me and in the mean time I'm trying to learn new technologies , but without working on a useful project , i can't make a remarkable progress in that too. I hope IH and the wonderful community can help me out.

Good morning @rosiesherry! I’m Carmen, recruiting consultant by day. I’ve built a curation website for recruiters (www.recruiterhunt.com), a supporting newsletter and chrome extension. I’m here to execute my 555 plan; 5K users/subscribers for the website (mau), newsletter and extension, and eventually monetize by selling ads to companies in the recruiting vertical. In the past, I co-founded a conference with a successful exit, and founded a failed startup. Excited to learn from others and share when I can.

    Hello Guys,

I am so exited to join Indie Hackers community and forum. I am looking to learn more about stock trade and web development for 2020.I have been living in United States for around 4 years so far. I wanna focus on building an algorithm for stock trading and looking to make connection and create a network with other people here at Indie Hackers.

Hey Rosie, Thanks for the friendly welcome. I've been looking to signup to IH for a number of weeks now and I thought I'd take this opportunity during the lockdown to do so :)

A couple of years ago my wife and I had the joy of using our country's legal system for the first time. As with most people the experience was less than pleasant :) Therefor I'm joining IH because I want to replace the world's legacy legal systems with a community-first based legal platform (I have the MVP at www.legalnow.co. Well... it's a bit more than an mvp. I'm a developer and get carried away easily).

I'd love to get some feedback. I'm here for questions, answers and everything in between.

After I'm settled in and know my way round the site I'm going to be actively looking for someone that can help me build a community round the product. Looking forward to being part of such an active and knowledgeable community. Really like the site btw. I just enthuses me with energy just looking at it.

    Hi, Rosie-

Thank you! :) I'm a serial social entrepreneur and currently thinking of ideas to use art to heal the world during and post COVID. Anyone can email me here to connect - [email protected]

    Love from Brooklyn!

Hey all! I'm Gavin. I grew up in Vancouver, then came out to Montreal for an undergrad in mech eng 6 years ago. I've worked on and co-founded a few projects in sustainable transportation, remote sensing, and data analytics. My expertise is mainly in backend dev, and the role i've played is usually lead engineer - i've built route optimization algorithms, and high dimensional data search systems. While I love engineering problem-solving, this isn't my career aspiration. I'm more interested in shaping technology into products that people love.

My latest project is a language learning chrome extension that turns any web page you visit into a language lesson. We're a small team of close friends right now, and i'm mainly focusing on product (and a bit of NLP). We aim to launch in a few weeks, and our goal is to get 100 users who love our product. Personally, I hope to get a deep understanding of developing a consumer product, and potentially start a career in product management (in between launching my own projects and companies!)

Hi, I'm Tesfa. I live in Winnipeg Canada. I have been an indie hacker for the past couple of years learning and developing my front-end web development skills.

I am currently working on a link-sharing platform called Linkup. This is my first attempt creating a service and I'm quite excited to see where it goes. I have a public beta out currently and my goal is to go live before the summer.

I'm so glad I found this community and I'm looking forward to connecting with everyone!

    1. 1

Hey Tesfa! Shout out to another Canadian, i'm from Vancouver myself! Hope the beta is going well! What front-end web dev tools are you learning these days? I mostly played a backend dev role myself, but am thinking of dipping a toe in some JS in the near future

      1. 1

Vancouver, I love that city! I'm currently learning React Native for the web to transition into creating platform-agnostic applications. And, dope! JS is great, you are gonna love it!

Hello indie hacker community! My name is Adam. I'm 22 and I just started learning full-stack web development with Flatiron School three months ago. I live in the Denver area but I just moved from Mississippi after college last year. I currently work for a small-midsize e-commerce company where I am an administrative assistant tying-out invoices.

Over the past three months, I've had a lot of conversations with my leads as well as our web developer and I've identified a few problems that I could solve/conveniences I could provide with code. I'm still in a stage of gathering information and building skills but I can already see solutions to some of the more basic issues just from learning ruby and sinatra with ActiveRecord. I recently started listening to the indie hacker podcast and it has been an extremely valuable source of advice and motivation while I work through the earliest phases of a project that may one day be a bootstrapped start-up.

My main goals for this year are:

    1. Completing my flatiron software engineering course.

    2. Have an MVP for an e-commerce invoice manager/custom-analytics program and implement it at work so that I can start building it as a business of its own by next year.

    3. Get a position as a software/data engineer within my company so I can afford to put more resources into my ideas and spend more time studying the problems I want to solve.

I'm really psyched about learning more about all aspects of coding and building a business as well as hearing the progress other developers/founders are having with their projects/businesses.

    Happy Friday!
I'm Nuzair, from USA. Currently working as a Systems Analyst but I am a part time Freelancer. The goal was to move to be a full time freelancer this year and start travelling (Digital Nomad). Then corona came in like Miley Cyrus on a Wrecking ball.
My long term freelance clients are still with me but it's still no good with all the travel restrictions in the world. So that dream is on hold.

To heal from the heartbreak I have been working on a project related to home robots. I'm working on a robot sidekick with AI enhanced features. 4 weeks later I have a product that works in theory and in simulations. Now I need feedback, so I'm creating a landing page.
Goals to Achieve from the landing page:

    1. Find investors to help me create the prototype.
    2. Get feedback and collect emails to show investors that people actually are interested.

Here's the problem that I run into:

What will be my CTA button on the landing page?

I can't just say "Sign Up for Newsletter", even I wouldn't sign up.
Do I say "Sign Up for a 50% Coupon to be claimed on the first batch"?
    Any ideas?

Even if you have no ideas, please feel free to say hi. (I've been isolated for 3 weeks alone in my apartment :D)
    Be safe

    Hi,

I've recently been looking at launching my own SaSS product after years of selling single-licenses on Envato. Before all I did was code and give up my product to Envato to sell so setting up my own service is a whole different ball game. Looking to get some tips on everything and anything!

Hi, I'm Imran. I'm from Gujarat, India and currently pursuing my engineering in CS from Charusat.

Last month I started to work on an idea of building a service-based company(B2B) that builds websites, PWAs with JAMstack. I have set up the website (https://jamify.me), emails & social channels, launched on ProductHunt(https://www.producthunt.com/posts/jamify).

I am seeking clients for giving us our first project & someone to work on this with me as an inhouse team of JAMstack developers.

My goal is to build a venture that pioneers the JAMstack industry by offering faster, more secure web solutions to businesses.

Hi, I'm Brandon! I picked up programming at a really early age and 20 years later I find myself able to practice my passion as a full time full stack developer. In my evenings and weekends I always find myself tinkering on side projects and coming up with ideas to try to monetize. I'm really excited to join this community; I think that collaborating with like minded individuals can spark motivation and creativity. I'm looking forward to networking with everyone!

    Hello Rosie Sherry,

I have IT Bachelors degree and grew up with computers from the age of 4 years old. I have a thirst for knowledge and I am looking to produce animated videos on youtube. A similar youtube channel would be https://www.youtube.com/user/Kurzgesagt , they have 11.7M followers. I would love to produce fascinating content that keeps our subscribers engaged, interested and blown away.

I would like to do research and script creation for the videos. The team would have input to the ideas, research and scripts. Currently we have a sound engineer who adds music and sound effects to blockbuster movies. The sound engineer would add sound effects and music to our videos adding an extra layer of depth to them.

I am currently looking for 1 to 3 animators to animate the videos. Please get in touch if you are animator or would like to be part of the team. The videos will be in 2D animation.

    Many thanks,
    Nick

Hi, I'm Adam and I live in Amsterdam.
My mission is to inspire & empower others to make a difference in their mental, physical & spiritual health.

I try to do that through my platform ManBodySpirit.com - which currently consists of a website, a weekly email magazine I send out to my subscribers and an (occasional) podcast.

I pour a lot of time and energy into Man Body Spirit every week so I would love it to reach as many people as possible.
I do it for the love primarily, so I don't see this as a hardcore profit maker, but I would like to monetise enough to cover costs such as outsourcing content creation.

So I'm here to learn, share and grow together with you all.

Hi, I'm Morgan. Based in the NYC area, live in north NJ with my wife and 2 daughters. I started my career in New York as a PHP/jQuery developer for a SAAS real-estate company. Over the course of 20 years have worked with almost every language and transitioned into various hands-on engineering management roles. In 2015, I joined a y-combinator startup Hickory Training (SU2015) as the CTO and lead prod-engineering efforts to an acquisition in 2018. At which I became the CEO while the company transitioned ownership and I continued to staff the company. In late 2019, I left Hickory to found a new company gitBabel.

In 2020, we launched our platform and our first set of customers. We are continuing to grow and learning everyday how we can better serve our market.

Hi, I'm Hari, I'm from Chennai, India. I am working as a co-founder of a marketing company in Chennai. We tried to build a product/app which didn't turn out well. It's a loyalty program app for restaurants. Joined IH two months ago, and didn't know how to use it. I am ready to use and connect with people. Hope you all are good. Stay Home, Stay Safe. Nice to meet you all!

Hello I'm Mariana. I am 24 years old and I graduated with a BFA in graphic design two years ago. I did not start my design career right out of school, and only last year I left my job as a server. Then a month before COVID-19 I had to quit my job at a screenprint company because I was recently diagnosed with lupus. I also have asthma, which means I must stay quarantined for who knows how long.

As I've been stuck at home, I realized my true passion is illustration, specifically conceptual editorial illustration. My ultimate goal in my career is to see my work on the new yorker magazine. I want to Create visuals that tell a story, that have a meaning behind them and support an article of some kind. My challenge as if now is how to find income working independently from home, as I build my illustration portfolio and then publishing it on Instagram and grow a following for potential clients to find me. I am in the process of perfecting my craft and branding myself.

Welcome to IH! Sorry to hear about your health issues, I can only imagine how hard that must be. It's amazing that you're brave enough to follow your passion in these difficult times. Good luck with your art!

Hello everyone! My name is Casey and I'm from Portland Maine. My expertise and passion is in application security. I spent the early part of my career as a software developer in various industries and platforms. I moved from software development to full-time application security about six or seven years ago on taking a consultant position with a security firm. I worked for another one after that before going off on my own about three years ago.

My goal is to transition from consulting to full-time work on an application that I'm developing to aid in the application security testing process. I'm still in the early phase of development, but I'm incorporating my processes, knowledge, and experience from the past seven years of testing applications from the financial industry, healthcare industry, and others.

My target demographic are people like me (independent consultants), developers at any organization, or security people at companies who need additional help in identifying application level flaws in their organizations systems.

I'm looking forward to learning and contributing to this community!

Founder of Tidy Data (www.tidydata.io) which is a data monitoring company. Self funded it and looking to grow organically. By trade I'm a train software engineer. Been doing it for 20 years in various capacities (software developer, network engineer, svp of engineering and ultimately CTO). Started and was a part of a number of notable ventures, some that was highly successful and some fizzled and were flops.

The peak was that I was 1 of 4 founders who started a company in 2007 and took it public in 2015.

Looking to get tips and interact with the community!

Hi, I'm Justin. I'm American but am currently based in France with my family (all under lockdown at the moment).

I currently work on a Bitcoin startup (don't laugh, also obligatory shill: https://quid.li); my co-founder and I have now changed ideas three times but we love what we do and are lucky enough to be able to keep doing it for now. My aim in 2020 is to create enough momentum to move to the next step with our startup (no more PoCs, establish a working model).

Joined IH because I've heard it's a great watercooler/resource for founders. Glad to find another online community. Looking forward to enjoying more content and connecting with more of you!

    1. 2

I personally don't really get Bitcoin but I won't laugh. The market today clearly shows there's value there. Good luck with your venture!

      1. 1

Appreciate it! And there are definitely times when I want to laugh myself, so no worries ;)

Also, always glad to see other ex-finance people who've jumped into the startup rabbit hole (I was in transaction services). It's certainly not as unusual today but still always makes me smile.

        1. 1

Yeah, finance is definitely where the money is, which can make it hard to escape that rabbit hole. Only took me 12 years to figure out it wasn't making me happy and I'd rather be building things.

Hey, how's it going? My name's Mick. Im 30 years old, currently working as a virtual assistant to a marijuana dispensary based in California. I'm a father to two girls in diapers who both live with me in Tennessee. Before working as a VA, i worked as a machinist, forklift driver, semi loader, and heat treat specialist in a few of the local factories, but decided to try and find something online that could not only keep my attention for more than 5 minutes, but let me stay at home and always close to my girls. I'm not on here promoting a site. Im actually on here for ideas on what to do next. I've had it in my head for a while now that i can make some money with affiliate referrals, and even put together a spreadsheet that tells whoevers interested in signing up what all they stand to make and just how fast they'll make it. I want to figure out a way to take that to the next level and give the list some real exposure and see just how much i can make off it before i take the funds and use them on pursuit of the next project. Im open to any ideas and would love a good braindstorming session if youre ever interested. Thanks for reading

Hey all -- good to be a part of the community. I'm Eric, based in SF, and passionate about bringing people together to be better. Crazy times we're living in right now -- hope everyone is staying safe and connected!

Hello, I'm Jeff. I have worked doing desktop support and system administration for the past 4 years in Ohio. I have become bored and mostly burnt out. Being in Ohio, the opportunities for programming are very minimal. I usually struggle with sticking with a single project so I am hoping by joining this community, I will find motivation to continue with my projects to the end.

Hi! Sabina here...I'm new to the community but have been loving the content and advice so far. I'm from NYC but living in Paris to try to get my startup of the ground (my cofounder is French). The startup is elocance, a text to speech app with features designed specifically for busy professionals. We just launched a new version of our app a few weeks ago (was an MVP before) and would love thoughts and feedback from the community! https://elocance.com/
Also, my background is in marketing / advertising / branding so am happy to help with anything that might be related!

    1. 1

      Welcome to IH!

I don't know whether the sample voice on your website is a representative sample, but it sounds really good. I've tried various text-to-speech apps in the past and I've never been happy with the quality. Too robotic and hard to listen to for extended periods of time. Even the one that's built into Windows 10 is just "ok." Apple's text-to-speech is considerably worse.

I'm really surprised that text-to-speech isn't more prevalent. I think it is massively underutilized technology – maybe it just needs to get better.

I'm going to download your app and check it out.

      Good luck with your startup!

      1. 1

By the way, the first email I got from elocance ended up in my spam filter, probably because it was in French.

        1. 1

Hi Steven! Sorry it took me so long to get respond. Thanks for your feedback - we feel the same way about the lack of adoption of TTS and, more importantly, the lack of a go-to app for busy professionals. We're working on some cool features that will hopefully make text to speech easier to use. Also, good to know about the email...it should not be in French! Working to fix this right away!!

Hello, I am Mihai, a 16 year old high schooler living in Romania. I have started learning programming 3 years ago, and now, I am have an agreement with a company, where I make small browser games, and get paid 500$ for each, after 1 month and a half, I got to 4000$ , and this is a lot of money in Romania. The thing is that, I don't want to work like this, and I would like to have my own small startup. What advice would you give to someone like me?

  70. 1

    Hey, everyone!

I have been doing SEO and swimming in the digital marketing arena as a freelancer for 6+ years. It's time to create my own business!

I am trying to build a sustainable six-figure business in 4 years, by the time I am 30. The goal is to hit $300,000/year or $25,000/month from all my business ventures combined.

In order to stay on track, keep myself accountable and share my journey, I have created a separate blog where I will document all of my successes and failures.

    Wish me luck :)

who you are, why you're here, and what you hope to accomplish or learn in 2020:

I am Charlie, currently working in a company which sells on Amazon.

Forget how to get knowing this, but I am really surprised by the contents here. In my country, there is a similar community, which costs a few hundred dollars.

2020 is about half a year left, and I want to build a small website, maybe hiring someone to create a Chrome Extension too.

Hello All, I’m Nitin, Founder of avvnue.com, an expert marketplace built to address global skill gap. I shuffle between US & India for work and currently based out of Mumbai, India. My background is in building and scaling sales organizations and worked with Intel, Gartner and LinkedIn before committing full time to my start up since the beginning of this year. I am experienced in leading teams and setting direction for building business together, my first experience was with friends, starting a small scale ITES business which we grew into 40 employees and $300K in annual revenue before exit.

In the past few months, I have successfully launched the MVP and on boarded over 200 users. The platform is built for businesses, start ups and large consulting firms to find and interact with experts from various domains. Other corporate applications include consulting, upskilling, conducting surveys, market studies, sourcing talent etc. We are addressing some of the burning issues for large enterprises in term of talent and skill. I have a lot of other use cases and functionalities; I would love to add on and differentiate the platform as one of a kind digital offering solving critical problems for our customers. Below are my goals this year.

Onboard a CTO/Tech Co-Founder with expertise in Ruby/Rails/AWS by end of May 2020.
Acquire 50 paid corporate customers by Dec 24th 2020.

Nice to meet you all !!

Hi, I'm Verci. I am developer from the Philippines currently working for a very tiny AI startup. I want to build an app that can generate me at least $1K a month for now just to sustain my living expenses. Hi all, I'm Kai. I'm a high school student from Perth, Australia. I started my first business (a failed clothing brand) at 12, and since then have gone on to create and collaborate on various small projects. I realised pretty quickly the digital strategy (web/system design/dev) is my area of passion, and I have plenty of no-code ideas that I'm looking forward to working on more this year. Really happy to be apart of this community! www.kailovel.com

Hello! I'm Ben. I've followed IH on and off for a couple years, and decided to join now that I'm actually launching something.

I'm a software engineer (mostly big data -- Hadoop in my bones) recently turned startup entrepreneur. I dabble in personal OSS projects, and mess around answering questions on Quora, but mostly I work : ), so I figured the best way to introduce myself was to post what I've been building.

I'll post the long story as a separate post, but the short story is, I feel passionate about helping empower everyone at a company who can script, to build internal apps. We've seen too many technical non-engineers (PMs, Solution Architects) get frustrated by the lack of access to the APIs & infrastructure they need to Build Cool Stuff. My co-founders and I have built a platform to make it easy for anyone to build + deploy cloud-native internal tools, even if (especially if) they only 2 hours a week hacking in Python.

Our website is https://www.cloudwright.io/, and I really appreciate any feedback, opinions, or (especially) test users. The free version the website links to doesn't include sharing or cloud VPC deployments, but I'm happy to hook anyone up who wants to try those out.

Hoping to continue to learn from everyone here, and do what I can to contribute back, if I ever learn anything.

Hello, Mark here I have been introduced to indie hacker a week ago and have been moving around the site lurking but it came at a great time. I'm starting a new venture and this is the first time I'm also in the driver's seat of a venture. I've usually sat behind the scenes strictly pushing code never wanted to know what happen on the marketing side but I gotta go out and get users now.

If validation goes well this will be the third tech venture that I build-out, I've been on the big stage of New Orleans Entrepreneur Week, and part of the DreamIt Accelerator. I've lost the energy for those things 😩. But here we are and I'm here to study.

We started with an idea, my co-founder Ryan is always bugging me about some cool tech idea and I always shut him down but he came to me about an idea I already wrote code for just didn't know what to do with. "Automating podcast show notes" I ran the code on a few of his podcasts it came out pretty good. so before I spend the next few months building out a user interface I said lets put out a validation page to see if we can get 300 people to sign up in April...that was Feb!

NOWHERE did we expect the economy to go on a tailspin and have to debate if we should put things on pause or take the risk with our own $ or hold for the last roll of toilet paper. We took the risk and this either goes well or becomes a great story. Hello everyone 👋 lets get this story rolling. (https://www.melville.app)

    1. 1

      Welcome to IH!

See if you can get @csallen to use Melville. I can definitely say that as a listener, I'd love to have a transcript and show notes for the IH podcast!

      1. 1

Thanks, @stevenkkim, I'll send @csallen a message to see if we can chat. I appreciate the value you see in already. It's been pretty exciting getting feedback and exploring how we can present a better product.

Hi I'm Katelyn. I live between NYC and Seattle. I've been a consultant, VC, and founder. My first company is now 65 FTE and financially secure. I'm looking for my next gig and want to build and learn.

I'm still figuring out exactly what I want to build. I have been working on a weekly newsletter that smartly comments on economics, investing, and current culture and am working on turning it into a valuable community. I also have an idea for short-online 'best on the web to learn for free' curriculum starting with the topics my newsletter readers are interested.

Excited to be part of the community and learn from everyone.

    1. 1

Welcome to IH! I like the 'best on the web to learn for free' idea – I'd give that a try. What was your first company? Sounds like a neat success story.

Greetings to the IH community! Firstly, I hope you all are staying safe and practicing social distancing. The times are tough but we need to hang in there! This too shall pass.

A quick intro about me and our company. My name is Anil Kasibhatla and I am one of the partners for a growth stage mid market/SMB recruiting firm-Param Solutions (param-solutions.com) based out of Ashburn, VA.

We cater almost exclusively to our clients in the DC corridor (DC, MD, VA) helping them with full lifecylce talent acquisition services in various IT stacks. Our team is split between US and India and our recruiting model is offered on a 90/180/360 days options akin to a SaaS provider. We named this service Recruiting As a Service (RaaS) (https://param-solutions.com/whyRaaS) and launched the offering in November of 2018. We have completely turned the traditional contingency recruiting model on it's head and introduced a paradigm shift in sourcing/recruiting/hiring/on-boarding talent.

BTW our RaaS division is currently at a MRR of $33K and reached a high of 42K for 2 consecutive quarters in 2019 . We had a churn in one of our accounts and that bought our MRR to 33K . We are also launching a few add on services for our clients and kicked off our digital marketing services in November of 2019. We are launching a video chat interview feature by early May and integration services for ATS systems by q3 this year.

Our RaaS service is an offshoot of our Staffing services that launched in October 2010. We built our staffing division to approximately $3.0 M in revenues and made the Inc list of fastest growing private companies in 2015 (https://www.inc.com/profile/param-software).

I would love to learn and share our trials and tribulations and how humbling it is to be an entrepreneur and the challenges we try to overcome every step of the way with the IH community and help in any way I can. I know 2020 is already turning out to be a challenging year but we can't give up. Onward and Upward!

Also, I love podcasts and startups (specially SaaS based) and always trying to learn from my peers! I hangout on Linkedin mostly and would love to connect !(https://www.linkedin.com/in/anil06/)

    Cheers!
    AK

Hi, I'm Andrew. Recently graduated (< 8 Mo) and in a full stack web dev position I love full time in the midwest. I've always loved personal projects and I'm joining today to try and build up my resume, as well as explore some super interesting ideas I have and hopefully even to generate a little side income!

Hi Rosie, hope you're well! My name is Jeff, I live in SoCal. I've been a software developer for the last 35 years, and after 17 years as an employee/programmer I am stepping back into the contracting world. My first "job" was to update my skill set. I've been maintaining a client server app with data on Oracle and SQL Server. I just finished a bootcamp in Google's Flutter/Dart and Google's Cloud Firestore.

My first app will be to support Configuration Management. I'm going MVP, just the top handful of requirements then alpha/beta...

Hi Mark here! SeeSnapFounder & CEO.

I'm excited to join this amazing community. Thank you for doing such a wonderful job.

    3x Inc500 Founder
My largest exit north of 100m.

    Best role: Being a Dad

    Lowlights:

    Crash and burn two startups.

    1. Co-Founder issues
    2. Grew too fast
    3. went broke chasing startups (still hurts like heck) :)

Welcome to IH! Sounds like you've lived several lifetimes in startups!

Hi, I'm Marek - guy from Poland with > 15 years of exp in IT. From Front-end dev, to CTO/Founder. I was tired with full time job but it was too lucrative to leave it. Well - covid 'helped' me do that, since I was working in Italian's fashion ecommerce.

For the past few months, I've been building a video player that's focused on ads. It'll operate on revenue share model and is written with focus on speed, transparency and some 'smart' elements, such as generating videos from your inventory so that you could monetize it. I'm aiming to release it by the end of this May and to get first 5 customers by the end of June. Crossed fingers are appreciated :) If there're any publishers with video and/or text content, drop me a line.

Hi guys, I'm Rokas based in Lithuania - over the past couple of years started working on my own. One thing lead to another and now I run an event management software company (currently specialised for educational fairs and trade shows - https://scantact.com ).

The Corona situation changed everything - all my warm leads, trials went cold, in an instant. Hopefully the situation will get better soon.

In the meantime I'm working with no-code tools (such as Coda) and helping companies digitise. Also I have a couple of side-projects, which I'm keen to develop, especially now that I have a bit more time.

Long story short looking here for like-minded people who I can build together with, learn how to get more customers, exchange ideas and feedback :)

Hi all, I am Jordan from Baltimore and have been in NYC for the past 7+ years. I come from a background in the music industry as an artist manager and am beginning a transition into tech via teaching myself to code and applying to entry level positions in the industry as an assistant, community manager, or whatever else I can do to get my foot in the door. I've been building projects on FrontendMentor.io and teaching myself via freeCodeCamp, Udemy, and the YouDon'tKnowJS book series.

My dream is two-fold. One is to work with businesses and artists to design and implement the best ways to portray their work and earn enough freelance revenue to work for myself (and potentially grow the business out to have employees or partners as well). The other is to eventually work alongside other engineers at an established startup or company to learn from people better than myself and to get to know what working with engineers is like with a defined company process.

My biggest goal right now is to have my first well-paying client or be working as a Frontend Engineer (this includes a paid internship) by July 2020. I've been learning to code since January of this year. So, in the meantime, I am working on side projects alongside tutorials so I can apply what I am learning as soon as I learn it.

Glad to be a part of this community!

Hi, I'm Dhruv. I'm from Planet Earth. I live in India.

I am a co-founder of a SaaS product named SalesHandy. A software that helps outbound sales teams double their productivity and SQL conversion ratios.

I hear to keep my self up to date with what's happening.

I am myself, marketer, by passion. Expert at building organic traffic for the B2B SaaS. I am open to contributing what I have learned in the last 7-8 years in marketing.

P.S. The current version of SalesHandy may speak something else than what I described above.

Hi all, Niels based in Amsterdam here. Since 2013 I am working on a side project next to my full time job, although I am travelling through Europe with my partner and 2yo daughter for already 10 months, see https://www.instagram.com/nielshirleyente. While I was planning to return to "normal" in May, COVID-19 makes things a bit insecure, especially whether I am able to return to my full time job. Because of this but also because of my desire to one day be able to live completely independent (both location & job), I started becoming more interested in Indie Hackers, Product Hunt and related sites.

So short term I will start reading articles here, especially related to growth hacking (as I never did a lot of marketing of my side project and I know it has way more potential than it currently exposes) and being a Indie Hacker while also being a parent (being a father is the nicest thing possible, but kids are very time consuming too haha).

Thanks for having such a great and helpful community, hope I can be of value too.

PS. My side project is a time tracking app that works by asking what you are doing in an unobtrusive manner. It's available for Mac, has 4.6 out of 5 stars based on 454 ratings, is free to try but requires a subscription (~$1/month) after that. MRR is around $1k. Check https://dailytimetracking.com (new landing page coming soon).

Thanks for your message and offer!

No experience with Resultivity myself but looking at it their goal is very different: Resultivity seems to focus on reducing distraction/getting your work done. Daily helps you tracking your activities throughout the day, mostly for invoicing / time tracking purposes, in the easiest way possible.

Hey, I am Alex. I create Airparty which is a curation of the best new webinars everyday. It's both a newsletter and a glide app. I've done that cause its hard to find good webinars in this time of Lockdown. Pretty Strange after all. I look for a directory or a plateform to find good webinar, live, on your subject but nothing ! Do you know one ? So Ive done Airparty. Just wanna scale now little bit the thing and find a manner to monetize it. I can either go to Indie way or a startup way if I want to build the netflix of #live. Anyway I will more than please to exchange with members over there to achieve a great product. As I am french Airparty cover only french shows but I look for people in US to help me cover english Live tech talks. You can take a look https://app.airparty.io/.

Hi everyone, I am a 25years old software developer from Ukraine.

I work full-time currently, but hoping to create a micro SaaS solution to enjoy the beautiful weather every day, not from the office window.

I am currently in search of an idea to build.

I found this community accidentally, but it seems that people here share my values and I am looking forward to interacting with you more.

Btw, if your idea succeeds and you need software developers to improve the product and scale, I might be helpful :)

    1. 1

I am so curious and want to learn more about how to enjoy beautiful weather daily via a SaaS solution?!

Good day ! I'm Oktron, a mathematician/librarian/teacher/software engineer. I love hacking bits into tidbits, e-gizmos and happy accidents. I hope for 2020 and 2021 that algorithmic constituency will be a thing. It's when you write runnable specifications in plain language, so that even informatically illiterate people can deliberate on them.
There were some interesting advances in neural networks, and software development is forking ; it's a beautiful thing to see. (the energy consumption is terrifying, though)

Hey all you cool cats and kittens! My brother and I are building SWAYD, a mobile social network & discovery app to help you find restaurants by images and short-form videos created by people you trust in your community. Prior to this, I worked in finance and strategy roles, most recently in corporate healthcare venture capital before following my foodie passion.

Because of COVID-19, we started a side project called Gift The Support (see product page in my bio). We built a mobile app where businesses can create, sell, and scan e-gift cards, just by signing up and linking their Stripe account.

Small business owners are now more than ever seeing the importance of customer loyalty. If they had a way to contact all their prior customers and were able to manage those interactions, they would be able to call on them now for their support.

    1. 2

Welcome to IH! What you're building sounds cool. I'm always surprised by how rarely restaurants use technology and get discovered and connect with their customers. I mean, if my favorite restaurants even had simple email lists, I'd sign up in a jiffy. I know the restaurant business is tough and maybe the ROI isn't there, but I have to believe that a good solution would be beneficial for both restaurants and the foodies that want to support them.

      1. 1

I (of course) agree :) Are you a foodie yourself?

        1. 2

Definitely. I think making, sharing and enjoying great food is one of the most amazing things humans can do. But these days, COVID-19 aside, it's hard to find the time to go out to a nice restaurant with three kids. Fortunately, my wife's a great cook and I have a few recipes up my sleeve, so we're doing just fine in our kitchen in the current situation.

          1. 1

let's definitely chat further! also very interested in what you're working on. the best way to chat with me is probably Instagram @sfeeeeeats :)

Hey folks, nice to be here with all of you! I'm here because all of my plans have gone awry. ;) My background is in software engineering and for many years I helped build, and then ran, a digital product studio called Parallel (https://parallelmade.com/). I sold my shares in Parallel a year ago, then worked to merge the company and get things sorted with its new owners. I left a month ago to work on a six-month half-time contract—one that would pay the bills but leave me another 20 or 30 hours/week to figure out what I wanted to do next.

Two weeks ago—two weeks after I started the contract!—it got cancelled due to COVID-19. Now I need to figure out what to do. I have enough savings to give me some runway but I know the time will fly by. And although a typical gig may be in my future, I think this is also a golden opportunity to build something that generates recurring revenue.

What I've got: two decades of entrepreneurial experience and a solid understanding of all matters business-related, great software engineering and architectural skills (Rails + React + iOS), good design sense plus honesty, integrity, grit and discipline.

What I'm missing: a great idea.

On the personal side, I'm married with two kids. We are all in lock down in Hamilton, Ontario, Canada. Crazy times! I hope all of you are staying safe and healthy.

    1. 1

I'm so sorry to hear about your contract! I love your perspective and it's one I share as well... this time truly can be used as a golden opportunity!

Hi! I'm Savannah. I'm currently a junior in college.
I currently have an idea for a business that I'm interested in starting. However, I have no idea where to begin when it comes to starting a business. I would love to get feedback and advice on how to get it up and running.
I'm also looking for people I can bounce ideas off of and possibly work with.
That's it for now! Looking forward to learning and interacting with everyone on here!

hi everyone, I'm Jigar from Singapore. I am trying to learn more about digital marketing and connect with people and communities.

Hello, I am Jean Michel from Dakar Senegal. I am 29, and I am pursuing a PhD in computer science - machine learning. I am also building a gamified intelligent tutoring system to help children from remote areas to learn handwriting. The purpose is to leverage technology to allow disadvantaged children in Sub Saharan Africa to benefit from one on one tutoring.

I have been working on a first version from last year, and already started testing with local schools earlier this year to get feedback. Now I know better what the product should look like.

My goals is to have my first paying customer this year.

I am here to avoid loneliness. Because it is very difficult to do research, software engineering, get customer feedback, marketing and so on. I am a fan of indie hacker, I have been listening the podcast for a while and got inspired many times. Now I feel it's a good moment to get more involved with the community.

Hi! My name's Nate. I'm a law student, dad, and husband. I'm also the co-founder of Vöxtur.

Vöxtur started foolishly as a clothing company. After realizing that clothing is not one of those "if you build it, they will come" industries, we shifted our focus towards content. Now, Vöxtur is a place for builders. We interview extraordinary people and share their stories. At Vöxtur we believe in learning from others, and we strive to help builders gain inspiration, tips, and insights in order to help them build what they're building.

I've been building Vöxtur ( www.Voxtur.Life ) for about a year in a half now and I'm struggling to build an audience. I joined Indie Hackers to learn how to attract readers, build my mailing list, and generally gain traction.

Anyway, looking forward to getting to know you all!

    1. 1

      Hi Nate, welcome to IH!

FYI, I just tried to check out your website and it took a very, very long time to load. You may want to run a Lighthouse check on it and make some optimizations. I just ran an audit and your homepage's performance score is 32 – not good. 4.5 seconds to first paint and 11.8 seconds to interactive. Maybe you need faster servers for your WordPress site or caching? You also have a few images on your site that are 1mb+ than can be optimized.

Sorry to hit you with feedback when you just got here. You seem to have some nice content on your site, but the slow performance is really getting in the way.

      1. 1

Steven, that's really helpful feedback! We'll get right on that!

Hi, I am Johan and I am 43 years old. I am a full stack software engineer from Namibia, currently leading a dev team at a local bank. Between 2007 and 2014 I was a partner in 3 separate consulting businesses that were serving Namibian companies. All of them failed.

I am here to learn more about starting an online business for a worldwide audience even though we still have our challenges in getting funds into the country via e.g. paypal.

I want more in my life than to work in a soul destroying job. I like to do my own thing.

I love to code, and I do not like people even though I had to taught myself how to work with people ( Am apparently good at it lol ) Humor always helps.

I am currently working on my product in what spare time I have, which is not allot.

    1. 1

I find that most coders tend to be introverts so you're in good company (or good solitude?) in wanting your space :)

    Hi, I'm Ehmad from Pakistan.

I'm 28 and in the last 7 years, I've worked as a Software Engineer on different domains (iOS, Backend and Web Frontend Apps). Just last year, I've been handed additional responsibilities at my day job and now I manage a team of 10 Software Engineers who are building the tech for a Food Delivery Company in Pakistan.

Just a couple of months ago, I took on this side-project for the top Pathology Lab in Pakistan (Chughtai Lab https://chughtailab.com/ ). Me and my small team are helping Chughtai Lab's home sample collection team with some very exciting tech. It's about to roll out in early June and the next couple of months look exciting.

After working in hard core engineering for the last 7 years, I'm on a mission to start my own software development agency that specializes in Python and Javascript. At Indie Hackers, i'm looking to network with Sales and Marketing experts to learn from their experiences.

Starting today, I'm looking to do two meetups every week. Feel free to reach out to me at [email protected]

    Happy Hacking!

Hi, I'm Andriy. I'm from Italy but I was born and lived until my early teens in Ukraine.

Currently I'm working as a backend developer in one of the biggest italian comparison platforms.

A couple of weeks ago I had an idea for a project that could help other makers and hackers and now I'm looking for some konwledge about bootstraping a side project.

My goal for 2020 is to launch and make my idea at least somewhat profitable.

  119. 1

    Hi, I'm Sebastian.
I am living and working in Berlin, Germany. I have studied Interfacedesign in Potsdam and graduated in 2017. Now as an Interaction Designer I constantly seek to validate ideas that pop up here and there. One idea is a very strong one and that is basically why I am here. Looking out for validation and eventually put a product on the road. See my profile for some more infos or DM me.

Hi Guys, I am Manish from India, I am working as a Lead for mobile technologies in a company but also have been working on an Invoicing application as my side project, I know there are many applications which are free and are great as well but I want to create this application at global scale and something which people actually use for their business. If you are already using any such application can tell me what are the problems you face with your existing application and/or what feature you might like!!!.

    Have a great time guys!!!

Hi Im Dee 27 year old from London UK, for the bulk of my life I've worked in sales currently a Sales Manager - started learning to code about 3 months ago so currently en route. My brother is a devops Egineer and has been showing me the ropes etc. Also working in the Saas industry for a while has always made me want to bring my own ideas to life, so I thought why not learn it myself and hopefully by the end of the year change my career completely. Open minded and a huge student.. would love some advice from you bright people!!

  123. 1

Hi I’m Junior, I’m from London (United Kingdom). I’m 29, I work as a software Developer, I like my job, but I feel I’m destined for more. I love to help and prep people, I created a company called PrepxUs (a.k.a. Prepares Us) to develop a technology that can induce true empathy.

I currently have a platform that enables pre startup entrepreneurs and their target audience to communicate on demand, about problems the entrepreneurs are attempting to solve and validating proposed solutions.

There are 2 apps (similar to how Uber works):

    • One for Entrepreneurs to Test there assumptions.
    • The other for potential customers to earn money whilst discussing topics of desire/need with anonymous entrepreneurs

I have no users, I hope this technology can eventually benefit entrepreneurs, designs, developer, business analysts, and more.

My website site: https://www.prepxus.com, please provide feedback on the landing page.

I need to gather more interest with the second app so there is a large pool of potential customers from various demographics, before I can convince entrepreneurs to use the first app

Hi, I am Marco. I found this community from a youtuber I am following.

I create my own software company called www.betacode.tech. We are a small team of young developers that work as a team extension for other software teams and startups. Mostly we help other companies creating their on MVP's or recreating their old and rusty software with that latest tech. :)

My motivation to join this community was to meet fellow "Indie Hackers" and their stories. Hope, I can contribute with my experience as well in the future.

    Cheers to you all.

    Hi, I'm Stefan 👋

I’m the founder and CEO of Wortspiel.com, a digital marketing agency in Zürich, Switzerland. I created my first website in 1999 and have been active in digital marketing ever since.

My goal for 2020 is to launch products.

Recently I launched my first product: friendlyanalytics.io, a privacy friendly Google Analytics alternative

I got lot's of good feedback (producthunt.com/posts/friendly-analytics), but hardly any sales.

So today I am (soft-) launching my second product: friendlyautomate.com, a SME friendly HubSpot alternative

If you have thoughts on these products, please let me know!

I'm looking forward to get to know you and the Indie Hackers community! 🙂

Hi, I'm Bates and have been a software engineer full time for 5 years now.

I joined because I'm looking to join a community that can help with fleshing out some ideas I've had for starting side projects and hopefully provider feedback myself.

My first job was at a tech startup focused on providing inventory management to classic and collector car dealers. Currently I work at a startup focused on space management for large corporations.

    Howdy all,

We're attempting to create a mobile app to help first responders communicate better - on and off duty. It's one part communication platform, one part social network. We have a small team of designers, but are looking for folks to help us build the tool. We have a basic website here: www.getairhorn.com

I'd love chat with anybody interested participating in this project - we're hoping to make significant progress in the next couple of months.

    Best,
    Alex Roa

I'm Maciej, I'm scientist working on commercializing my PhD thesis and projects.

I'm working on platform for easy build and manage decentralized applications in P2P architecture, dedicated for daily use for devops and sysadmins, but not only - wide IoT is also a good target. This is implementation of last three years of my research, which applies cryptography as backing tool for some high level tasks.

I'd like to build a community around my open source projects, and to commercialize them and commercialize them (with stil keeping open source). My goal is to find way how to do it with such technical products or find somebody who would like to help with it

I'm someone who uses people who know better than me to build money machines, to service diverse market needs. My goal here is to find good team members for profit based models. My current focus is AI and algorithm driven social promotional programs and knowledge databases.

look forward to digging deep here.

    Hi!
I'm Lucas, I'm 25 and I work in a SaaS company – a online customer service software provider called LiveChat (I know, it's so fresh!).
As I'm working in the Marketing department of an IT company, I joined IH to gain some knowledge and understanding about the industry – a digital world that I didn't know that well. Also, from time to time my company releases some stuff that might be interesting to you – for example, we are planning to host an online hackaton in not-so-distant future.
I can also share some knowledge about running a ProductHunt campaign and creating brand for your product – this is something that I'm really good at :)

    It's nice to be here!

Hey everyone! I'm a software developer working in the aerospace/defense industry. I mostly do embedded work, but I'm starting to learn the basics of web development. My goals for this year are to learn javascript and start prototyping small websites. I'm interested in entrepreneurship and the future of tech in education. Look forward to learning from and with you all!

    Hi Rosie,

My name is Mari. I’m a music artist + coder. I’m currently wrapping up a software engineering bootcamp and my reasons for going into engineering were to feed my intellectual curiosity, explore the intersections or art/music and tech, and to use tech to as a platform to scale cultural impact in positive ways. I’m hoping to meet others here at Indie Hackers who I can connect with, learn with/from, and bond over what it means to be a well-balanced developer or whatever role have you and make impactful contributions to our society.

    Hi All,

I recently pitched myself to a tech startup company in my industry that I'd love to work for.

I have a meeting this week with the founder.

I'm wondering if you have any specific tips to best prepare myself for this meeting.

The company is growing rapidly since Covid and I'm pitching myself also someone to help retain all the clients they are now onboarding - think of it like a customer success role.

I'm well versed with the company itself and the industry - just looking to get the extra mile to be prepared for this meeting. Any tips/ideas welcome.

    Thanks!

    Hey, I'm Sameer, the co-founder at https://www.socialchamp.io

    Just a brief story,
Sold Dad’s car to buy my first laptop. Freelanced. Won competitions. Graduated scoring 2nd position. Made awesome friends. Continued Freelancing. Formed OuzelSystems, a software consultancy company. Saved enough to have a 6-7-month runaway. I got mentioned in media under the top 25 under 25 in the country multiple times till I turned 26. Started a product. Worked for 3 years. Got offers to incubate but it was very late. Failed. Started 2nd product. Failed. Started 3rd product. Got incubated at The Nest IO. Had investor opportunities but knew it’d take min 3 years for traction, investors didn’t know. I started the 4th experimental project with my cofounder during weekends for me. Shared with Guy Kawasaki, he loved it. Stopped 3rd Product. Made this experimental project as 4th Product which is called ‘Social Champ’. Still ran ‘OuzelSystems’ to keep us funded until we raised investment. Raised investment in Jan 2019 from Oman Technology Fund. Now, focusing on growth. Not easy. But the journey is worth the ride.

Currently work as a solar sales rep for my primary source of income but wanted to get back into the online web space (pre-coronavirus lol). Randomly found this community and am glad I did.

My goal is to build a niche website, driving majority of traffic through SEO, and playing the long term game (5-10 year plan). Excited to share my progress :D

    Hi everyone,
My name is Matt i'm 24yrs old i'm from Connecticut and brand new to the world of coding.
Since the spread of COVID-19 I have been unemployed. I have used this time to start teaching myself the basics. I am currently learning html, css, and java script.
I have found a lot of inspiration from listening to cortlands podcast and hope to one day be able to call myself an indie hacker.

    1. 1

I'm doing the same thing, learning the fundamentals of coding! Are you using any specific platform to learn?

      1. 2

I've been using freecodecamp. It's very straight forward. I've found it easier to take concepts and apply them to my own projects as soon as i'm introduced to them so i know i'm actually learning their functions not just memorizing syntax.

        What have you been using?

        1. 1

I’m using Udacity’s intro to programming course. They were giving a month away for free bc of Covid so I decided to check it out!

    2. 1

  165. 1

Hey all! I'm Josh from Montreal working as a software engineer at a tech startup. I've been looking for a community where I can bounce off startup ideas and also get some meaningful feedback on my side project.

I started building https://poopee.co - yelp for restrooms - when I realized that public restrooms aren't readily available/accessible while I was living in NYC. So I thought to myself, "What if there is a website that will tell me where the closest restroom is?" That is how Poopee began and I'm working on the third iteration of the product.

I'm excited to join this community full of entrepreneurs! Thanks 😊

  166. 1

Hi! I'm a 22yo progressing my career as a software developer/engineer/devops, having my own, small software consultancy agency (started early). I've worked both mid-sized companies and super small startups, not writing code much now and focusing on the architecture and managing my team.

I love it, but a few years ago I acquired a small pet-project, an online marketplace for native speakers / expats advertising their language classes. Not sure if to sell it away or grow it. Selling my time as a consultant is far more lucrative at this moment. But having and growing a side business gives me incredible sense of stability and independence, and surprisingly enough, just because of the current lockdown situation I'm selling premium memberships for teachers like never before. And I don't won't to sell my time forever, at least not directly:)

    Any thoughts?

    Hi!
I am Alvaro Hurtado from Spain but currently living in Germany.

I found Indie Hackers when I was looking for something else, completely by chance.

I am very interested in entrepreneurship. I am educated as a software engineer, I worked in several companies as a back-end engineer in the past (mostly working with Python and Django). Nowadays, I work as a Product Manager.

I love food. I spend a lot of time on it. Reading, researching, cooking, eating... all of it! I am always open to a nice conversation about food!

I missed coding after a few years out of it. Therefore, a few weeks ago, I released this site:
https://www.mehackearon.info/ Sorry it's in Spanish. It uses the API of Have I Been Pwned, to tell users if their information was compromised. I enjoy working in this kind of tiny project.

I am working on something else. I will let you know.
    Regards!

Hi Everyone, I'm Matt and I am a co-founder of

    https://encaptiv.com/

and I'm looking for feedback on our tech. We are a presentation software that integrates with web conferencing (Zoom, Google Hangouts, etc.). COVID-19 be damned we are currently free to help anyway we can through this crisis.

    1. 1

      Hi Matt, welcome to IH!

Encaptiv looks pretty awesome. I'm not a presenter, but if I were, I think this app would be really useful.

I have to say though, that your landing page could use improvement. It took me a lot more than 8 seconds 😉 to figure out what your company does. There aren't any pictures of your product above the fold so it took me a while to realize that your product is an app. I watched your intro video and thought "Ok, I think I know what this does, but I still don't know what it looks like."

Also, maybe your web conferencing approach is a recent pivot due to COVID-19 but I don't see any reference to web or video conferencing on your website. It seems to be focused on in-person presentations. I think you need to be much clearer about what your app is and does so that users "get it" right away.

For example, "Transform your presentations into interactive audience experiences that convert." is very abstract. Something more concrete would be "Encaptive is a mobile app that creates two-way interactions between presenters and their audience for webinars, video conferences and live presentations. Poll and survey your audience, get feedback, collect email addresses, and get conversions in real-time." That's not the best copy, but just trying to make things more concrete.

Last, this may be a matter of preference but I think the images of fish-people look weird. I don't think they are good for your branding.

Sorry for hitting you with so much criticism. I honestly think your app looks really great, but your website isn't communicating your message well.

I wish you the best of luck!

      1. 1

        Hi Steve,

Thank you for taking the time to check out encaptiv. I really appreciate the feedback and know we need to work on somethings with the website. All the best.

    Hi all,

My name is William, and I am so happy to join the Indie Hackers community today as I know I can get super-valuable advice as well as meet awesome people in here.

Back to France after living 6 years in the US, I am taking the opportunity of a life change to get back to entrepreneurship. The project I am working on is incredibly challenging, so I am looking for all your help and expertise to get over all sorts of difficulties on the path to success.

If you are feeling frustrated with email messaging, you are the user I am aiming at making the life much easier.
If you have expertise in decentralized messaging, email protocols, or anything related to digital messaging (asynchronous or synchronous), then you are definitely the kind of person I am looking to work with.
In both cases above, I would be super interested to get connected with you to discuss.

My project is still at an early stage, and I am planning to shift a few gears quite soon as I am about to quit my job to get 100% focused on it. I am going to be accompanied by super great entrepreneurs and mentors from ESSEC Business school and its network. I will also get incubated in a famous Parisian incubator (le Cargo).

I am looking forward to building the dream team that will send the project to the roof, of which an incredible full-stack dev to be my CTO co-founder and partner in crime (hopefully rather in success).

If you want to know more about my spirit, you can read a few articles I wrote (more to come):

    Jimmy. Looking for interesting discussions.
    IRL: Zürich/Liechtenstein/München and Oslo/Gothenburg/Copenhagen

Current (2020): better housing, oceanographic sampling, education through entertainment, CO2 sequestration, airborne pathogen sampling, autonomous food production, and some scientific computation stuff.

International distributed R&D consulting still pays most of the bills. Have built two companies through the years. PhD on computational physics in medicine, 10y in scientific research.

Yo - I'm Thomas, I'm an entrepreneur that has cofounded 4 businesses. 2 successful in the covid era. https://nakiwi.com/. Over the years and the failiures, have become a validation machine 😄but still know that I don't know anything.. Would love to connect and share ideas on my most recent project https://www.envsight.com/ : An environmental consultancy with an amazing piece of tech (run by Imperial graduates and researchers) that I am helping to productize.

Quick rundown of some cool stuff I've recently been part of:

    • Working at the Royal Academy of Engineering on a project focused around the commercialisation of academic research.
    • Running Founder Institute’s London programme: the world’s largest pre-seed accelerator.
    • President of Exeter Entrepreneurs society (largest society with +1000 members, sponsorships from Google, UN, TEVI etc.) incl. Jubel Beer
    • Orchestrating a pilot around my dissertation topic: Empowering smallholder farmers through blockchain technology: Study of how the French winemaking cooperatives will get benefited by implementing this technology into their business practices.
    • Launched Nakiwi App – an agri-tech startup (+1000 users, hired 7 sales summer interns to market test the scalability of the backend) aiming to redesign our unsustainable and carbon intensive foodchain.
    • Run startup scouting service for corperates and accelerators incl. IBM France, Southwest Waters, Central Research Laboratory etc.

    Good vibes,

    Hi I’m Lachlan!

I’m a software engineer from Gold Coast, Australia, and have been working for 3+ years.

I’ve been working to try and grow my skill set in both iOS SDK development, as well as back end development in Typescript/nodejs.

After listening to a few indiehacker podcasts, I am pumped to join the community and try and start a few side projects. Let’s see where It goes! 😄

Hey, hope you're all doing well 😷. I'm Manu Ganji.

I've been a developer and entrepreneur for the last 9 years. I worked at 3 startups, founded 1 of my own and now onto my 2nd. My LinkedIn is at (https://linkedin.com/in/manuganji/) for anyone curious.

I'm here for help with my startup and guidance on getting early customers. I launched BountyHiring recently. It's a new hiring platform where you earn referral bonus by referring your friends/colleagues. I believe that you know your colleagues better than LinkedIn or a resumé. I also believe that true talent shouldn’t have to hustle to get noticed.

Nothing shady, no surprises except taxes. Ask me any questions here or at [email protected]

If you know of companies who truly appreciate talent and want to hire the best, please let me know. 🙏

Hi Everybody. I am completely new to open source and distributive manufacturing. My 5 year goal is to design and build a prototype bio-coal fueled hybrid steam electric locomotive

The design can be open source, and the construction is to be equity based crowd funding.

    Cheers,
    hcm

    1. 1

Welcome to IH. Wow, your project sounds ambitious! Good luck!

      1. 1

        Steve thank you.

I was inspired by an open source truck, a crowd funded locomotive, and the ACE3000 project.

        https://www.a1steam.com/

        https://www.american-rails.com/ace-3000.html

        1. 1

Neat. Do you have an end goal in mind? Are you going to actually try to get your design adopted by transportation companies? Or is this more of a proof of concept design similar to how Elon Musk created the hyperloop concept and then let others try to build it?

          1. 1

            Hi Steve,

Actually this is to get to a prototype so that that the project and concept will be realistic to potential investors and customers.

One I have a commitment from a customer, then I will be looking for investors.

The whole idea is to design and build a prototype with no or little funding, hence the open source and crowd equity approach.

Once established I would like to align with Coalition for Susaintable Rail. Currently CSR is testing bio-coal on a traditional steam locomotive.

BTW I am looking for a business partner.

            Cheers,
            Bert

    👋🏻 I'm Ryan.

I've been an engineer and entrepreneur for 15+ years. After cofounding half a dozen startups, selling a couple of them, holding multiple CTO roles, and opening a brewery, I now spend my time running a full service digital agency, Beta Acid (betaacid.co), in NYC. My team focuses on helping all sorts of companies build and launch software products with a startup-like approach.

Most recently we launched POURWALL (pourwall.com), a free digital beer menu platform for bars, breweries, and restaurants.

Looking forward to sharing my expertise and hopefully learning a few things myself!

    1. 2

Welcome to IH! I hope you are staying safe in NYC. Things sound very scary right now.

I love the combination of software and beer – that's something I can get behind 🍻

Hi, Im Samuel from Monterrey Mexico. Ive been a developer for almost 15 years and I've attempted to start several startups on the way, having learned from those mistakes Im currently attempting to start running a new digital business. I heard about Indice hackers in a software podcast and got curious about the community and what you do, I started hearing the podcast and its been useful information for what Im trying to build. I hope to start generating some revenue this year with the application I'll attempt to launch in the upcoming months.

    1. 1

      Hey Samuel,
I'm planning to travel to Mexico this year, hopefully soon when those hard times will be all behind us. My plan is to travel but still having some work to do, I'd love to know if there are some cool spots around the country for such a plan !

      1. 1

Hi Augisting, well there are lots of spots to go to, it all depends on what your preferred interests are, if you share that I could tell you where would it be best to stop
