Welcome, introduce yourself! (Week of Aug 2nd)

Rosie here -- the Indie Hackers community manager. Welcome! ๐Ÿ‘‹

This short guide is meant to help you get the most out of Indie Hackers.

First, introduce yourself!

Indie Hackers is a community of people helping each other build profitable businesses and side projects. The key word here is "community." Don't be shy!

For starters, take a second to introduce yourself and share your goals in the comments below. ๐Ÿ‘‡

Just say a few words about who you are, why you're here, and what you hope to accomplish or learn in 2020.

Take a moment to say hello to someone else as well!

Dive into learning.

We've interviewed hundreds of successful indie hackers. I recommend reading a few of their stories. It's a great way to get an overview of what's possible.

@csallen also puts out podcast episodes if reading isn't your thing!

Next, get started!

There's no time like the present. Check out the "Start Here" page for a list of practical steps and articles that can help you take action.

Not only will it help you get started, but it should also introduce you to some of the best parts of the Indie Hackers community.

This is just the tip of the iceberg! If you're ever feeling lost or confused, post in the Meta group or tag me (@rosiesherry) in any comment or post.

Don't forget to introduce yourself and say hi to someone else below! ๐Ÿค—

Hi! I'm Biggles, I live in the UK and I'm currently working on a small turn based indie strategy game called Ozymandias with a friend and a couple of contractors which we are lucky enough to be able to pay (modestly) via a small grant from the UK Games Fund.

    1. 1

Nice! I'm in Dundee, and I work in Game Dev too. I'm in an R&D position right now. Going to be working on some Augmented Reality and Procedural Content Generation projects soon too. We should connect :)

Although I'm here for a different reason - I run a small results-focused Content Marketing agency. I help drive leads for B2B businesses with sky-high content quality.

    2. 1

Sounds good! I love games and turn-based strategy especially. Ever since original Civ in 1991, along with chess, Stratego etc. Would love to check it out when you get something up.

    3. 1

Hey Biggles, sounds like you have a nice game, can I play it?

    4. 1

Hi Biggles ! That's a computer game you're building, or physical board game ? I assume it's a video game but I might be wrong. Is it your first indie development experience ever ?

      1. 1

Yup, it's a computer game & my first indie game, although my business partner has shipped a few before under his "Secret Games Company" label, including both board games (which we're both big fans of) and computer games.

Hi! My name is Aleks, I live in Prague and I'm currently working on Welder with 3 of my friends from high school. Welder is an app for recording remote interviews, podcasts, and other content. We are launching early access in the coming days so I'm excited to get involved in this community!

    1. 2

I've seen your product and been in touch with Johan. Looks sweet!

    2. 2

Came here looking for something like this, LMK where to sign up

Greetings. I'm a multi-stack software engineer and architect.

The particular stacks I have experience with are 15+ years of cloud enablement, front-end development, games development, and general low-level/embedded development.

I also have experience with the creative arts and have been exposed to marketing, advertising, 3D modelling, music, and creative writing.

I'm looking for something that seems exciting and noble to start, fund, or contribute
    to in other ways.

    1. 1

Your experience and attitude are epic! I'd like to stay in touch. As a self-taught dev with 40 years of relatively unique and broad life experience and insights, we might find some noble projects to collaborate on in some manner. I have many significant concepts written down and fleshed out to varying degrees.

    2. 1

Very good to have some experienced people here :) Seeing your post made me realize I didn't write my name either

  4. 3

hi! I work with a Boston based VC looking to partner with seed-stage startups. Excited to be a part of this community and share opportunities!

    1. 1

Hi. We are a startup based in Bangalore (India), looking for Seed funding.

    2. 1

Cool. You'd be the exact persona I'm writing my book for...VC dealing with early-stage start-ups.

    3. 1

Hey there! Also from Boston, just wanted to make the connection. Welcome to Indie Hackers! I'm just getting started here myself.

  5. 3

    Hey,

Been reading IH for the last few weeks, and excited to dive into a new indie challenge. My goal is to leave the never-ending tech grind of working at startups and do something small on my own to support my family.

I have an idea in the project management space for PMs in gaming. The space is fairly under served, and with more work going remote, there could be a good opportunity here.

We'll see, worst case I'll learn some new skills :)

    1. 1

I feel the same! I'm also working in startups and looking to start something for myself. Good luck on your way there!

  6. 3

Hey! I'm Hernan. I'm a marketing co-founder and advisor. Been in the digital marketing space for the past 10+ years and helped 100s of entrepreneurs and companies acquire more customers through digital marketing. Excited to be part of this community and add as much value as possible!

Hi! I'm John Brannen. I am a software engineer in Athens, Ga. I have developed and patented a technology that allows your phone to detect and measure laughter. I have built a fun app called Made You Laugh. It is a community of users (500 so far!) that share funny content. When a user posts content, they can see how many people actually laughed! Users can also challenge each other to a video "laugh-off". It's like a FaceTime call in which you take turns telling each other jokes. At the end the app will tell you who is the funniest! My goal for August is to reach 1k users. Help me meet it by checking it out, https://madeyoulaugh.app Here is a teaser video I just made. https://youtu.be/EFrxkiIyJ_4 Thanks!

  8. 3

    Never Stop Learning ๐Ÿ’™

    1. 2

I love the niche and concept, and the content looks good too! But I have to mention your site experience is terrible due to load time - I actually thought there was no content at all to begin with. Pagespeed agrees: score of 11/100. 11sec to interactive.

      https://developers.google.com/speed/pagespeed/insights/?url=https%3A%2F%2Flearnstash.com%2F

What did you build it with? I saw WordPress resources in devtools, is that it? Not sure why so slow.

But again, otherwise, great concept and it looks like you're on your way, I'd love to stay in touch - I have some similar concepts as well that I'm not as far along on.

  16. 2

Hello everyone! I'm Gaby, currently living in Madrid and working for this cool American project https://blush.design

Hey there! I am Zach and I am based in Waterloo, Canada. I've been an engineer for while and I am starting to build some side projects. I am excited to join IndieHackers and work to launch and grow my projects to profitability.

    1. 2

I'm in Waterloo for the time being as well! So nice to see engineers building their own side projects. I helped Philip, the co-founder of Waterloo based Tutturu go from idea to >$150k ARR and winning Velocity $50k pitch competition. I'm a big advocate on first time founders not raising venture capital, but depending on the product and market it may fit. Anyway, if you ever need help with your side project I'm happy to help.

That goes for you too @mountaindad and anyone else reading this in the IH community. DM me or reach out via the community section here: https://community.gradschool.co/

      1. 1

Hey @jamesskylor, sorry for the delay. I know Tutturu and think they are great! That is awesome you were able to help them. I will for sure reach out if I ever need help.

  26. 1

Hey all! I'm Floris, I'm a Dutch guy living and working in London, UK. Currently working as a tech lead at Gyana where I (amongst others of course) am building a No Code e2e data science tool.

My full-time work is not the main reason I'm joining here, been doing plenty of reading and thinking about side-projects and tech business in general. Figured that I am at this point in my life/career where I have bandwidth to explore the vastness of this space. So far everything is getting me more hyped up on doing smaller projects and just toy around with the things I find fun to do.

Pretty excited to actually put my voice out there and see if I can become part of a great community!

  27. 1

Hey! I'm Dinesh working on https://www.videoform.com/ with a mission to help companies in Lead generation through human conversations.

(I don't want to explain our product further at this point because I'm interested in how you would describe the product and the value that our solution offers our customers)

Besides I am publishing tutorials on the open-source cms WordPress on my plattform "Wp Wizard" which helped thousends of people in Germany, Austria and Switzerland to create their own website with WordPress. Lately I have neglected this a bit, because I am very busy with timeBuzzer.

I joined Indie Hackers because I believe that we can all be more successful if we support each other with our experiences. I am happy to join this community!

Right now I am working on a few SaaS ideas and learning Swift to launch a football app with former professional football players.
Always open to work together and meet great people in the community :)

I been running various online business for the last 5 years, as my goal was to "make money online", which I achieved, and earned my economic freedom with lot's of hard work!

Hi I'm James Skylor. I recently left my VC job in Silicon Valley as I suffered a heart attack due to stress and years of being a slave to work.

I've explored the no code movement and built https://www.gradschool.co/ so that I can still help start and grow companies as it truly is my addiction.

If anyone needs help with anything startups I'm always game to jam on your ideas and help out

Hey, I am Oguz. I hope we improve together.

  51. 1

Hi, i'm Veeru and i'm a third year international business student from the Netherlands, and have been looking for ideas to start up my own business!

  52. 1

Hi, I am Vit and I work on a startup called OrgPad. We strive to remove obstacles and unnecessary work from the work process and thus increase efficiency and work satisfaction for everybody. OrgPad leverages a strong visualization since people accept around 80% of all information visualy. Even though OrgPad is a completely universal tool, it is very simple and easy to use and it will stay that way. If you work on any type of project, OrgPad may help you a lot. I personaly think that we solve one of the biggest problems of the western world.

    1. 1

Yes and I am from Czechia. I don't know, whether there is any value to this information, but since everybody says where he/she's from, I feel obligated to do so as well.

  53. 1

Hi! I'm Baskaran, I live in Bangalore . We are a startup working on Neo Banking. Our team members have vast experience in the field of banking, payment transactions and large IT infrastructure. Currently looking for seed funding.

  54. 1

Hi everyone, Jeremy here! I'm building a company called Idenati ("identity") with my partner Jake. We set out on this journey because it started to drive us crazy how disorganized things have gotten inside the browser. Tabs and bookmarks were supposed to help, but seem to have only made things worse. Tons of tabs are distracting and slow down the computer. Bookmarks are a dumpster fire. We're building Idenati to create a simpler, more pleasant, and more productive experience inside the browser.

I'm joining Indie Hackers to connect with other folks that are early in their journey, particularly those that are trying to figure out sustainable growth strategies. I look forward to fun and mutually beneficial exchanges with the community. Cheers!

    1. 2

Hey Jeremy, try and figure out what 'Growth Loop' you can build into your product. These are always the most sustainable and profitable.

An example Growth Loop for let's say, SurveyMonkey would be:

      • New user signs up
      • some % of new users creates a survey
      • some % send that survey to others
      • As people finish the survey they see a Survey Monkey landing page
some % of those sign up over time repeating step 1
      1. 2

Yup we're thinking hard on which sort of loops work for our product. Thanks James!

        1. 1

If you want any help let me know๐Ÿ™

          1. 1

Def would love to get your thoughts. I think the most obvious one for us has to do with sharing tiles. I'll shoot you a quick invitation to Idenati so that you can understand what I mean by that. If you're down to check it out, perhaps we could grab a few minutes to connect once you do. Cheers!

            1. 1

For sure! I'm happy to help. I just saw your email and will check it out by EOD tomorrow! I haven't yet and first thing that comes to mind is what do you do vs. Pocket?

              1. 1

I love Pocket and use it as well! Pocket seems to be all about organizing content for consumption, things like savings articles and videos for later. Idenati is focused on organizing the apps and sites you use to get things done. For example, I filter for "work" during the day, and I see tiles for our marketing platforms, the database, CRM, etc. I filter for "blogging" when I'm working on blog posts, and that brings up revue, Wordpress, bluehost, etc. Finance shows me all my banks, credit cards, investment accounts, etc. All of these examples are primarily app-based as opposed to content-based.

                1. 1

That's actually a really good idea: 'Pocket for work' this explanation makes it much easier to understand what you do! Is it a chrome extension?

  55. 1

Hi, I am from India. I have been working full time as a backend developer for past 6-7 years. I was laid off a couple of weeks before. I found about indiehackers a few days ago, decided to signup and see if I can get lucky and get to build stuff with other people.

      1. 1

wow! I agree.. but over the years have learnt to tackle multi tasking/work. Idenati seems interesting !

Hi Rosie, thanks for having me along here.

I am currently in Melbourne Australia having recently returned from 4 years in Singapore. during the current Covid lockdown I have taken the opportunity to build a side hustle Mobius, which is a pain tracking platform for patients who have had guided injection therapy.

my current no code stack is webflow, automate, airtable, g-suite stripe and was guided here by researching into Onseta to handle user auth + subs.

    excited to be here!

    1. 1

Awesome to see that you're a no code startup too!๐Ÿ‘ Our no code stack is:

      Website: Webflow

      Backend: Zapier
      Authentication: Memberstack
      Payments: Stripe, Gumroad
      Email: Autopilot
      CRM: Airtable
      Internal Comms: Notion, Discord

      Never heard of Onseta before

Hi! I'm Vanessa Mason. I had a resolution to learn in public this year, and launched a newsletter where I explore the Future of Belonging (https://belonging.substack.com/). Just got an honorable mention from Substack's Fellowship for Independent Writers. I learned about Indie Hackers from Anne-Laure Le Cunff's Newsletter Geeks group on Telegram and thought it sounded like a cool community for learning. Hoping to keep learning how to be a better writer and how to connect more people for greater belonging in a world that wants to isolate, separate, and exclude so many.

Hi! I'm Divij, I'm a results-focused Content Marketing Strategist. I work on content that's sky-high in quality and makes you feel like you should've had to pay for what you just read for free :)

As an example, I'm helping this Google Ads agency generate leads through pieces like this - https://www.octobermarketing.com/2mm-growth-ecom-google-ads

It's a growth study covering 4 years of strategy that led to $2mm revenue for a DTC Ecom business. We've got 100+ leads in a couple of weeks after publishing.

Im from the UK and Im passionate about Sales, IT and Marketing. I enjoy helping people grow mentally and physically. I've recently started a Digital Marketing agency and have a domain for a personal growth blog. Using both channels I'd like to help businesses and people prosper.

My other ambitions include starting a business as a cloud services provider as well as an online store of some sort and hopefully the community on here can help me with that goal.

    1. 1

      1. 1

Hi Brendan - Thanks for reaching out

Passionate as in it gives me the ability to resolve a persons problem. Ive never been one to sell something unnecessarily so the feeling of resolving and getting a sale feels good, not to mention you build up your persuasion skills which is very important these days

But the idea, over time, is to gain the experience of the biggest pain points of non-tech founder to see how we can innovate in this area.

Hello! I'm Martin, I'm a back-end developer (mostly Ruby on Rails) from Belgium.

I recently starting working on one of my own projects, centered on making Time-Tracking simpler and cheaper for Web Agencies and Freelancers by using Git : Rakku.io ! (Don't judge anything based on what is currently there, I just put the default Mailjet signup form as a placeholder but it's horrendous, I know!).

I'm looking to gain some hindsights about how I can find early beta-testers/users once my "MVP" is released, which should happen in a few months time. I'm also interested in getting inspiration from other makers and their journey !

  94. 1

Hi, everyone! My day job is as the Head of Growth at a Bay Area startup. But, I'm developing a side project that I hope to turn into a business. I look forward to collaborating and learning from all of you!

Hi! I am Pavel. I live in Prague and I have two decades of experience in programming and mathematics. I started programming and hacking computers when I was six years old. I spend ten year teaching and doing math and computer science research at Charles University in Prague where I obtained PhD in network visualization. After that I went to work for Google where I spend 1.5 years working on Google search and mining connections from the Internet.

Now, I am a co-founder of OrgPad (http://orgpad.com) where I am in charge of all technical stuff. We are trying to revolutionize the way how computers are used. We want to interact with them in a visual much simpler way which will increase efficiency of people and enable power of computer to many people who are normally afraid of them. Your work at computer should be structured by problems you care about, not by arbitrary boundaries created by various tools and apps. Tools should adapt according to your needs, not vice versa.

    1. 2

Hi Pavel, I just logged into Orgpad - its a wonderful product. I think you must have some Orgpage explaining about yourself or OrgPad or both - just link it in so we can see!

      1. 1

Hi, thanks. We have two documents about OrgPad in English: https://orgpad.com/o/DJ4qI9VqRJCpsYTxlJwSYu and https://orgpad.com/o/ApqBnXlD1NKZ7fV_QA8TN-. We have bunch more newer documents in Czech. There are also over 80 published documents from various people on various topics.

    2. 1

      Hi Pavel,

OrgPad looks very cool. Who is your primary target customer, and what's your sales process? Would love to hear more about how you're gaining early stage clients.

      Brendan

      1. 1

        Hi Brendan,

Our primary customer is everyone who want to work in a visual way and think in connection, and who are not affraid of new things. One big target group are various students (from elementary school till university), but they are also people from businesses or everyday people working at various jobs. So the connecting point is the way how people think, not what they do.

Currently, everything is available for free and we have almost 900 registered users. The first few users were recruited from our friends, but later on it was spread between people by recommendation. We have spend $0 on advertisement at the moment, just trying to spread the word over various social networks, etc. We want to introduce paid subscriptions in a month or two where the basic usage will remain for free, and the advanced usage will cost $5 to $10, with a more expensive offering for businesses including standalone servers and support.

  97. 1

Private hacker removed all these negatives items in 2 weeks and increased my credit score to 796 on all 3 bureaus. I was able to get a loan to buy my family a home and also got myself a new car.

First off is a React-based word puzzle game. I have other ideas that I want to work on but I've said to myself that I should really finish one project first and go all the way to publishing it before I start anything new. Great to be here!

I've built landing pages, CMS's and large product integrations. I happened upon this site while looking for landing page inspiration for a product idea. Stretch goal with that would be the ability to work full time on that project and leave my current job.

During lockdown I built Done Dave, a free website creator that is perfect for freelancers, self employed, small businesses, students and graduates. Itโ€™s ridiculously fast, easy and honestly free with no adverts. Generally in life I hate it when I see people getting ripped off. I wanted to create a genuine product that does what it says on the tin! I hope Iโ€™ve done that...

Hola IndieHackers! My name is Adriaan and I am from Holland and currently living in Barcelona. I am a developer (~15 years) and started a bunch of side-projects and startups in the past. During the lockdown I have been working on a new startup idea (thunder.chat) which is an online event and social media platform, think of meetup meets zoom. I am now in the midst of finding a vertical, since the whole idea was a bit too horizontal...haven't figured this one out completely yet :) Hope I can read some of your stories to get some inspiration.

    1. 1

Hey Enrique! Did you get your hands on GPT-3 yet? You're going to love it! Whereabouts are you working as a ML engineer? I spent some time at the Alberta Machine Intelligence Institute (AMII)

      1. 1

Hi James! Not yet, I registered for access but it seems still somewhat limited.
Have you tried it already (GPT-3)?
I currently work for an IT recruiting company in Mexico. I help them to automate their processes, most of them related to NLP :)
I'm a practical ML engineer, but before I did research in Physics ( PhD.)
What about you? You were at AMII as a postdoc?

        1. 1

I have and it's soooo amazing!! Try tweeting to one of the guys at OpenAI and they'll typically give you access!
No I did a masters and just loved it so was always working with the great researchers there for fun and to learn! You must be incredibly smart - PhD in Physics and current ML engineer!

          1. 1

..well...my research was pretty averaged haha
Great to hear you are having a good time with GPT-3!
If you have something published on the web about it, I would love to see it.
Many thanks for the tip, I will ask them for access!
            Cheers!

    Hello,

Iโ€™m Chris. I am in the process of transitioning careers from data analysis to software developer. Right now, I am interested in developing sites related to music discovery and playlist curation. I am interested in learning if these kinds of sites can be profitable and what I need to do make them so. I am hoping to learn from and to give back to a community of like minded people!

  166. 1

Hi, I'm Zaida, from Mexico and I want to make something to get income. My current idea is to try making a game and a web page to promote my work or something, i dont really know what could work so im interested in learning from people who is getting good results.

I've been programming since young, but i have never figured how to profit from it, but i had better result making and selling artwork on physical medias, for a decade and some.
Lately my country's government has made it harder to sell in public spaces, so im forced to figure out a different income, somehow.

My interests include philosophy, economics, art & bookz, programming and interactive media, in the end, i want to be able to tell heart-warming stories.

Hi! I'm a long-time developer, mostly back-end, though I know my way around all aspects of the stack. I helped bring a startup from four users to an 8 figure exit recently in the EdTech space.

Now I'm in corporate-land and I've stuck around to help the transition. But I'm itching to get back into the game with something new.

I'd like to work out an idea that I can get excited about that has a lot of potential. I'd prefer something in the SaaS space that I'm familiar with and, ideally, something I can get roaring without outside investment.

Really lovely idea. Still slightly confused from the website on what exactly the value prop is

      1. 1

Thanks! Value prop is essentially time saving in managing data (estimate of ~3w reduced to 1d, per project), ability to collaborate, and ability to reuse data across projects.

    Hello hackers!

I'm starting up Little Ghost, an indie studio that makes games people have never seen before. The first game, Martian Mixer, is about mixing up colorful little aliens to help them mingle at parties. It plays like the OPPOSITE of a match 3 game and has a subtle, pro-diversity message.

I'm careening into a soft launch in a couple months and hoping to illuminate my blind spots and meet some cool peeps on here!

Bonjour, I'm Renan ! I'm a French Dev currently living in Russia. I've been building a SAAS for small scale vegetable farmers for 5+ years. It helps them sell their produce directly to their customers via emailing and online orders, followed by in-person delivery and payment.
I've recently tried to close the service, because I was making just 50โ‚ฌ/month of revenue, which wasn't great for the work involved in maintaining it. But the response from my 7 users has been so strong, I realized I did have product market fit, and only needed to increase the price, find new users and as always, improve the product. I'm on a journey to transform this legacy passion project into an actual income source that i could rely on.

Current planning is : improve the app and marketing material until November, then start calling farmers to offer them the software.

The software, in french only, is there : https://ciboulette.net/

Hello I'm a computer science student looking to get feeback on my ideas for ventures.

Hey, I am working on a few projects, but I do not plan to discuss them in public until I have something to show.

I am an Electrical Engineer by trade, I spent a few years in the embedded/real-time/industrial software world and lately I also created two video games studios.

I sold my shares and I have a lot of freedom to work on something else now.

I like tinkering with both software and hardware, I am attracted by the creative power of those tools, I tend to be allergic to bloatware and I prefer working slowly and perfecting my craft than producing quick and dirty results.

The quick prototyping approach only had disapointing results for me.

I am from France but I live in the UK (midlands).

Hello, I'm a software engineer thinking about leaving my job and starting my own thing. When I'm not programming for work I'm programming for fun. I do a lot of experiments involving gaming, machine learning and AI.

    Hi!

This is Nirmal. I've been working on a Git self-hosting project called https://sorcia.in for the last 1 year. The name has been changed recently from "Sorcia" to "Cmdity".

Honestly, this project is just meant for me, but when I've launched the initial release on HN, https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=22685914

I've found some good comments where people would like to use it. Now, I'm trying to build this from the ground up with C programming language (before it was built in Go). Again, it's just because - I'm curious to learn new things and just build what I want to use.

    Kind regards,
    Nirmal Almara

    Hello Everyone,

My name is Daniel and I have been looking for a community like this for a while. My current project is https://indikata.com/ which is a dashboard for e-commerce business. I am a software engineer by trade so I am hoping to polish my marketing skills and build up some interest before it is launched.

    Thanks

    Hello indie peeps,

My name is Vlad and I found about this community through some YT videos, which got my attention because they were promoting this idea of being your own boss while becoming(& staying) independent financially. Lately, I kinda took an interest into this ...hence I am looking for ways and means to achieve that or at least to figure it out if it's for me or not.

Anyways, I am from Romania, currently living in Germany, I am a software engineer (I have a BSc and MSc, both in Computer Science) and about 12 years since I have started on this path.

    All the best,
    Vlad

Hello, I'm Will, a Hispanic-American self-taught developer. As I go through the process of learning all the different aspects of programming and development, I would like to begin hosting these ideas on different websites that I plan to make. I would like to work on projects that hopefully will draw enough income to leave my repetitive 9-5 lifestyle of dead jobs. Hopefully, my experience will be able to help those who are in similar situations to pursue their own ambitions as well. I'd like to be the reason for the saying "If I can do it, so can you". Thanks!
