Welcome, introduce yourself! (Week of Dec 20th)

Rosie here -- the Indie Hackers community manager. Welcome! 👋

This short guide is meant to help you get the most out of Indie Hackers.

First, introduce yourself!

Indie Hackers is a community of people helping each other build profitable businesses and side projects. The key word here is "community." Don't be shy!

For starters, take a second to introduce yourself and share your goals in the comments below. 👇

Just say a few words about who you are, why you're here, and what you hope to accomplish or learn.

Take a moment to say hello to someone else as well!

Dive into learning.

We've interviewed hundreds of successful indie hackers. I recommend reading a few of their stories. It's a great way to get an overview of what's possible.

If you prefer audio to reading, check out the Indie Hackers Podcast Network and find a show you like.

Now is the best time to start.

There's no time like the present. Check out the "Start Here" page for a list of practical steps and articles that can help you take action.

Not only will it help you get started, but it should also introduce you to some of the best parts of the Indie Hackers community.

Good luck!

This is just the tip of the iceberg. If you're ever feeling lost or confused, post a question in the Meta group, or tag me (@rosiesherry) in any comment or post.

Don't forget to introduce yourself and say hi to someone else below! 🤗

    Hi Indie Hackers,

I’m the founder and Managing Member of renhub (www.renhubgroup.com / www.linkedin.com/company/renhub-group). After more than two decades in international corporate and investment banking I’m now helping startups to achieve their goals faster, more efficiently and effectively using a holistic approach. Guided by renhub’s core values Integrity, Reliability, and Trust I’m following a simple principle: invest in relationships and in people and success is inevitable.

At the same time I'm working on two tech ideas and am exploring cross-border venture capital ideas, in particular between Switzerland/Europe and the US. If anyone is considering the US as a target market or is seeking venture capital from investors (angels or VCs) in Switzerland or the US, don't hesitate to contact me. If you're looking to fund a more established business from the private equity community, let me know. Maye I can help. Due to my time in Leveraged Finance I have manifold experience in that sector as well. If you think you can go the traditional route and get conventional financing in the form of cash-flow based loans from banks, I did that for many years for SMEs and Swiss blue chips. I promise nothing but I will respond to any inquires.

If anyone ever needs help with international organizations (United Nations, Worldbank, IMF etc.), my wife has worked for over 12 years in this sector in different countries and we could potentially help with getting access to people and organizations.

I'm a Swiss citizen from around Zurich but have lived and worked for the last 7 years in New York City. I'm now about to move back to Switzerland.

I look forward to hearing from you,

    Renato

    1. 1

Hey Renato, I am also based in Switzerland. Zug to be exact. Prior to that, I had also spent a great deal of my time in the US/UK. Would love to connect and talk VC, Entrepreneurship and Tech...

  7. 2

    Hi all,
I am a machine learning enthusiastic, and currently looking for enthusiastic ML/DataScience aspirants to join with me and work on some cool projects

    Kind regards,
    Berk

    1. 2

How are you getting people to your site? What channels are you using to get content out? What’s the vision for productizing and who is the target audience? Super interesting space that I am passionate about, would love to help out if you’re looking for any help on the product side!

      1. 1

I would love to have you join us and develop Nerdy Joy with us. When it comes to your questions, initially we wanted to use influencers to market our product. Unfourtnetly, we did not have the budget to support that endeavor. For the time being, we are trying to market Nerdy Joy through content and social media.

I would appreciate any ideas you have regarding marketing. And our target audience is people that want to develop themselves. That could be ambitious individuals, students, and overall anyone. Since our product teaches lessons that can help anyone with their lives.

Right now we believe there is a massive opportunity in E-learning, it's a market with immense potential. More users are flocking to the internet every day to learn and educate themselves. Nerdy Joy is a company that wants to utilize this trend to change lives and create a community of passionate learners.

We believe books and learning can fundamentally change lives and the world.

Let me know if you have any questions and I just want to say how much I appreciate you reaching out to help. If you're interested in helping us or even joining the Nerdy Joy team, let me know! We can discuss all of the details!

P.S You can also contact me through Linkedin for further discussion, my name is Berk Lee!

    Hello Rosie,
Just a suggestion here. Scrolling through so many posts to identify common interest people can be tedious. I know this is a new venture and feedback is essential for improvements.
My humble suggestion is to include a filter for keywords or tags right on your home page.
    Hope this helps!

    Hello everyone!
I'm Bogdan, an MD and writer from Germany. I'm passioned about research and philosophy (weird combination, I know) and blend them to improve people's lives.

I believe that anything worth doing is worth optimizing. So I'm constantly experimenting and writing about my findings at https://optimizemy.life
I've also created an online community for people who want to become better thinkers, better does, better humans. If this sounds like something you'd like, let me know.

    1. 2

      Hi Bogdan,
It sounds interesting and I’m happy I found someone so close to me in this community 10 minutes after the registration. 🙏☺️

      1. 1

That’s great to hear! I love connecting with likeminded people.

We also have a community for people who want to learn and grow together. You can check that out at https://optimizemy.life/llc

        1. 2

          Hi Bogdan,

Thank you for the nice word and also for the opportunity.
I decided to follow your blog and subscribe to the mailing list, the rest we'll see.
          Have a nice day! :)

          1. 1

Thank you for subscribing! Enjoy the articles and stay tuned for more :)

    2. 2

Hi Bogdan, I'm reading your articles now. Thank you for sharing your relevant, clean-cut words with the world. I've been searching for an inspirational blog since a previous one disappeared, yours is perfect.

      1. 1

Happy to hear that! If my words inspire someone to take action, that’s the greatest compliment for me as a writer.

But sometimes words are not enough. That’s why I’ve created the Lifelong Learning Community

  14. 2

    Hi there!
I'm Sebastian, org. from Sweden, but now based in Berlin. Long time listener who finally took the step to join this community.

Are currently working on an idea to solve the problem of how much time is spent on data preparation and pipelining. Think it's bananas how hard (and expensive) it is to set up workflows for ml-embedded products (such as uber etc).

Happy to get connected with founders or data enthuisants to solve this with :)

    HELLO INDIEHACKERS,

I came across Indie Hackers while listening to @acquired podcast.
Currently, work in corporate Tech, and have done so for a good few years now. Mainly enterprise sales, GTM, Growth, and Product.
I also built a small vacation rental management company and exited successfully.
My goal is to find like-minded people here, and partner up to bring some of my ideas to life. Happy to chat with anyone, just hit me up.

    CHEERS.

    1. 1

Nice one, Im here after listening to the acquired podcast to, was super interesting

  16. 2

Hey there! I've been a long time listener of the podcast and I've been meaning to engage in the community. I currently run Launch Academy, a school that trains software developers and helps them find jobs in the Boston area. We're looking to expand our courses to help more people discover how rewarding and engaging a career in software can be. Launching smaller courses that appeal more nationally is a primary goal for 2021.

    1. 1

Hi! I've heard of Launch Academy as I'm currently in Boston. I'm interested to learn more about the courses your building and how I can potentially help out.

  18. 2

Hi, I'm Jonas. I'm a Machine Learning Engineer with a focus on Natural Language Processing. I like building little prototypes and tinkering around, but usually these things never go live. My goal is to change that and create something useful that generates some kind of MRR. If you need an opinion on anything Machine Learning related give me a shout!

  19. 2

Hi I am Satrya. I am a web dev, I'm here to get inspired and maybe to get my first side project idea.

  20. 1

    Hey everyone,

I am a full stack web developer. I love reinventing the wheel and learning the inner workings of systems, and i would like to make tiny prototypes and applications here and there. Later on i would like to turn these into full fledged products that i can release to the public and hopefully earn a bit of income along with it to ease my financial burdens.

Hope to learn a lot from others and try new things in their footsteps, before being able to forge my own path. :)

  21. 1

Hi, I'm a no-code product developer, I think no-code is a tool can be used by ordinary people to explore business models, verify value propositions, and conduct growth experiments. It's really helpful for them.

  22. 1

Hey, I'm Brandon and I'm a junior-level PERN stack developer living in Raleigh NC. I graduated from Thinkful's Engineering Immersion bootcamp in July 2020 and I am still searching for my first break into my new career path. I have been keeping my skills sharpened and learning new things, such as TypeScript, NestJS and GraphQL. I hope to make new connections and learn from others here.

  23. 1

    Hi,
I'm Mike. I'm a WebDev based in the West Midlands.

Hello everyone! My name is Jordan, and I build landing pages. I grew disillusioned with the normal trajectory of a career and I am narrowing my focus to helping cool people grow interesting things on the internet. Looking forward to being a part of this community!

  25. 1

    Hi there!

My background is in Business Development, Sales, and GTM strategy. I am looking forward to being part of this awesome community. My co-founder and I have been working on INDX (our startup) for the last few months and are looking for a CTO / Technical Lead.

We are a team of curious individuals who enjoy listening to podcasts, reading articles, subscribing to newsletters, and sharing videos to learn and improve with one another. Many of our conversations begin with something like, “Did you listen to this podcast or have you read this?” (or something similar). We decided to build INDX to solve a core problem that we have experienced ourselves. Over the past six months we learned we weren’t alone.

Post a comment if this sounds like you as well! Would love to chat more.

    Cheers,

    Susie

I'm an indie hacker who's been into the idea of create some sort of useful software. My background is in software engineering and product management. Last year, I launched a web app called https://chopstix.io but didn't get any real traction. Back then, I didn't know a community like this existed. I'm excited to potentially pick it back up again and learn how to grow the user base and make the product better. I'm also interested in working on a new project so I'd love to hear your pitch!

    Hi guys!

I'm a JS & Java dev trying to market my MVP https://landing.ironpal.co and trying to find some users.

Last week I changed the name and domain of it, it was called iCuerpo and now it's Iron Pal.

I'll share updates of my progress here at Indie Hackers 🤗

  57. 1

    Hey everyone 👋

I'm a software dev who's aim is to have fun experimenting with new ideas outside of my day job. I'm here to learn and hopefully make some side income to give me the freedom to do things I want to do.

My first attempt at a side project is https://similarbooks.to/. It's goal is to help people find books to read. We suggest books based off a users favorite movie, tv show or game.

    1. 1

      Hey!

I checked out your site. I noticed you don't have a lot of search results. How do you source results and suggestions?

      Chris

      1. 1

Hey Chris, it's all manual at the moment. Either things I've read or I research it on the internet. I'm thinking of opening it up to the community to help source recommendations but not sure on the approach

        1. 2

This would be really cool if you could automate the content suggestion engine.

  58. 1

Hi , i am here because I want to change something in my mind about programming, I don't like frameworks or libraries and i need to start everything from scratch so I'm here searching for a good project to do that'll make me a little bit more confident about my work , it's the idea that I do something.

  59. 1

    Hello everyone,
I don't know how today is the first time I get to know about IH. I have been in and out of programming for quite long time through various languages and projects but since it stayed with me as a hobby no matter how much I avoided working with it I decided to embrace it. Picked a stack decided to stick with it. Got an internship |> job but the project can't sustain. Since I'm super straight forward and terrified from interviewing because I cant really grasp formal concepts of trying to "master interviewing" and fake it where need be to convince others into taking me... I look forward to read others stories and inspiring stories how to overcome the anxiety and fear of failure (now that I write it maybe I should go Erlangs way and "let it crash") and prepare for the upcoming interviews I need to go trough. The very best case scenario I will find a project where I continue learning and contributing using Elixir\Erlang.

    Hi All,

I am a software architect that loves micro projects which can either be linked in an existing big picture or help build a new one.

I am looking to find projects in the defi space that I can contribute my time to.

I am not stubborn about any particular development environment, while currently work using Serverless technologies, Typescript on Frontend and Backend and as many graph tools as you could imagine, graphql.

Looking forward to be part of the indie community,

Thanks for the opportunity to introduce myself Rosie!
Looking for a less tedious way to connect with like-minded people and stumbled upon IH.
I have been through the startup grind-mill , learned A LOT from failing forward and able to help the younger generation of entrepreneurs working on the next BIG thing avoid falling into the chasm between development and market success.

My other interest here is to connect with experienced marketers/business development and sales professionals willing to assist businesses from failing. Seeing too many failures that could be avoided,

Check me out on linkedin : https://www.linkedin.com/in/zai-sarkar-profile/

    Hi,
I'm Bruce. I'm the CEO of a company. We sell custom picture merchandise to our customers. Although the sale is not bad, the growth is slow and ups and downs. Therefore, I'm looking for new business opportunity for the SaaS. Our experience are mobile app development, image processing techniques, web image editor, and social network marketing. I work hard and I think do the right thing is better than do the thing right. So, I'm doing my best to find our next project.

    1. 1

      Hey Bruce!

I've an idea for a personal finance management app that teaches the ignored but prime members of society how to manage money. We're looking for an app developer to join us. Would you be interested?

    Hi everybody,

I just quit a well-paying job as a software engineer to start something of my own. I'm giving myself all of 2021 to experiment and to find something that I can do long-term. My goals for next year include: writing a regular blog, writing a novel, working on a YouTube channel and prototyping a bunch of ideas. I'd love to find like-minded partners! Bonus points if you live in London ;-) but wherever you are, feel free to reach out if you want to brainstorm together!

    Hi all

I’m an experienced Brand Manager with background in consumer goods as well manufacturing.

My goal here is to learn from others as I’m working on my own projects as well as share and coach anyone that needs help building a successful brand!

      Hey Matt,
You are one of a kind buddy! Seeing too many tecchies here.

Zai Sarkar here (Zai pronounced like Hi! with a 'Z' instead of 'H').
I am verifying a marketplace for organizing skilled agile experts into teams that can offer their services to agile-aware companies who want to get more bang for their buck on technology spend. Chose the brand name AgileSpeedUP only launched in staging mode so far until idea is verified in the marketplace , and thinking of launch late Jan-Feb 2021.
Agile and SAFe methodology have become mainstay for most businesses that follow the agile methodology (70 % of mid sized businesses and 90% of large ones -- (DoD of US government included!)). You can google benefits of agile methodology if not familiar with the topic. It's all about the customer before the shareholders. A radical change of mindset in business strategy.

Outsourcing is organizations trend as they try to retrain/hire resources and experience the pains of moving from Waterfall to SAFe Agile methodology.

My most pressing need is to find someone to assist with marketing.
      Willing to listen to ideas.

    Hello Everyone,

I'm Saud Ilyas. I have joined Indie Hackers for research purposes and get better ideas or feedback about different market products. I was trying to build a custom client management product for months. I had no idea where to start. Luckily, I found Interviews stories from the creators of existing products. Of course, that would help a lot.

At the moment, I'm running many successful Saas related startups as well as my own marketing agency as famous.is and public relations as myPRwire.com. Many more on the list, but I don't want to spoil the thread.

Lastly, to define me in simple words, I would say I am a "Risk-taking, innovation loving, impact marketing enthusiast & tech entrepreneur who turns dreams into reality & never gives up."

    Hello everyone,

Great post, thank you for sharing, @rosiesherry

    I am S R Vivek (S R).

    Professionally:
In the past one year, I helped ACTIVeat (F&B brand) as an in-house strategist positioning it as a lifestyle brand to grow from 100,000 INR to a monthly revenue of 1.5 Million INR, with a consumer retention rate of 70%.

Before I turned 22, I had co-founded two bootstrapped startups (Mizaran - a social venture; Ensemble - a product design startup). Mizaran shut down as I was unable to monetize the social venture.
Ensemble grew with a network of 20+ retail collaborators and online channels leading to 120% growth in sales month on month.

Beyond my professional endeavours, I am into running miles in the morning, I love to experiment with cooking different cuisines, watching sheer brilliant movies, playing right-wing in soccer and leaving the city-lights for adventurous trekking expeditions.

    2021:
I am building an essay assembly on business, product & consumerism through a polymath approach of strategy, cultural research, economics, behavioural science and more.

    It's called Scrappy! (https://srvivek.substack.com/)

My promise to you is: I will make it worth your time!

My goal is to build the essay newsletter to 5k subscribers by July 2021.

    Future:

My goal in the next two years is to get back into the product business game to serve my ultimate goal in life: to end sexual violence in the world through an array of businesses(in progress).

I know I will make it happen someday. Follow me here & Twitter for updates.

Feel free to DM to talk.

    1. a site to sell property in Hell (about 90% complete and just a fun project)
    2. Personal blog to teach people figma

I hope to learn from everyone. I need some extra motivation to complete the projects and potentially make some side income to help my family. I'm married and have two little girls.

    Hi,

I'm Marco Colli and I am a developer and founder of these sites:
    https://pushpad.xyz
    https://buonmenu.com

I started a few years ago with zero money - only hard work and passion. My only founding was my family, which allowed me to work full time on these project. After a few years I am really happy about them. There are no vacations when you work on a SaaS, but I can freely organize my time and that is great.

I've also made many contributions on Github and I am very active on StackOverflow (top 1%). I also like to share my specific knowledge in articles like this (I prefer content marketing to annoying ads): https://kubernetes-rails.com

I've found this site a few days ago looking for the Sidekiq monetization strategy / dual licensing model. Then I realized that this site as a whole is really interesting :)

I'm doing marketing and communication for an audiophile music player called Volumio (https://volumio.org/). I studied and worked in the fashion field but this year I moved into the audio industry. To be honest I knew zero about who is an audiophile or high fidelity music until I started working for Volumio... and now I love it!
Also, a few days ago we launched a new project, a weekly paid newsletter platform to give music recommendations plus other essential info we believe music lovers will enjoy it :) http://musicletter.me/

If you guys have some feedback, feel free to reach out to me or if you need help in anything I'm here to help in any way I can! I found this community a couple of days ago and decided to join because I feel I will learn so much here, and hopefully my contribution will help others. Happy Holidays!

    Hi Indiehackers 😃 ,

I am Sanat & I am building a platform called Growsity to provide specialized courses/content on growth marketing.

About 50% of course will purely on hands on implementation of user analytics, acquisition & retention strategies.

The motivation - is to help bootstrapped teams hit the ground running with their growth marketing implementation through a mix of sequentially organized self paced lessons, downloadable guides, templates & checklists.

P.S. - Growth marketing ≠ Growth Hacking. This course is about growth marketing and not growth hacking.
For those who want to understand the difference, I have explained it here:
    https://www.growsity.com/post/how-did-loom-grow-to-1-2-million-dau-in-2-5-years-understanding-growth

Really excited to join the community & learn from personal stories of other IH members.

Hi Rosie, thanks for moderating this community. Hello Indie Hackers.

I was pleased to find out about Indie Hackers on Hacker News and have been reading to see if it is well enough moderated ... that is ... much closer to Hacker News and far from Reddit.

And, it appears to be well moderated with interesting members who are in it together. I joined today and am looking forward to being a part of the community.

I retired a few years ago after a long run in corporate tech (information/data architecture) and wanting to do good in the world. I spent the interim building web dev skills and volunteering in helping establish a non-profit focused on using integral approaches to the intertwingled global meta-crisis we all face. They are now operating well and can grow on their own.

I retired from corporate life mainly because I was interested in two major trends -> knowledge engineering, particularly knowledge representation and reasoning - conceptual modeling with ontologies and related technology, and virtual reality. I wanted to bring them to bear for the public good as compared with private good. At the minimum, I wanted to bring them to the surface so people could understand how to use them effectively for the public good rather than corporate advantage.

These are advanced skills just coming into the mainstream so they are not an easy sell in any organization except cutting edge ones or ones that you build yourself. So, that is my path - to refire my retirement with an information rich website, initially to provide the "missing" beginning and intermediate courses in these areas but in an enterprise context. That is, an enterprise a learner wants to establish. And, if my vision holds, continue with more depth and weaving of these into practical tools and skills for anyone to use.

I am just beginning, or perhaps, re-beginning, and will likely build it out in the open. I am ramping down my current volunteer work by EOY 2020 in order to ramp up my indie business in 2021.

I look forward to meeting many of you and sharing our collective journeys.

I wish us all luck and a happy end to 2020. See you in 2021.

    David Chasteen

      Hi David,

Your story resonates with me. I am working on a startup called INDX where we are trying to democratize and socialize learning. We currently find it challenging to save, return to, and share all of the content one consumes over time. Thus, resulting in making it harder to gain insights into your learning.

Here is a link to learn more about INDX: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I0_k-sfvY_8&ab_channel=SusieLira-Gonzalez

I would love to set up some time to learn more about what you are thinking and see how our interests align.

What is the best way to contact you?

      Cheers,

    Hi Everyone 👋🏼

I'm a programmer that wants to release my very own product as a side project. I'm interested in indie software publishing and how to bootstrap the product.

    Everything from

    • Letting people know the product exists
    • Charge for the product
    • Give good customer service to everyone that's purchased the product

I have the software open to beta test but the target audience is currently pretty niche, twitter users on OSX that use a client (not the webapp). So hit me up if you're interested.

    Hi all

I'm a data scientist / software developer who has been trying to "do my own thing" for about 5 years now. I've had ~6 failed start ups, and more recently...

...a success 🥳 ($5k per month B2B contract). Unfortunately this project is specific to my only customer (I built a data platform on top of a fantasy football website).

During the last 5 years, it has always amazed me that 99% of jobs are for 5 days per week. As a struggling indie hacker, I always wanted a job which was 4 days per week (max) so I could dedicate some time to my side projects, whilst getting some stable income

Thats why I'm about to launch: https://www.28hrworkweek.com/

Hope you like :) Feedback much appreciated!

    Hi all,

My background is in Software Development! I'm currently a consultant who works on a variety of projects for companies of all sizes.

I'm here because I don't want a startup but still want fulfilling side projects that make some cash. I am so glad I found indiehackers because I wasn't sure there was even a community for what I wanted to do.

My goal is to get feedback on my projects and learn more about the toolkit to make this work.

    Hi all, Matt here.

I've been lurking for a while but joined so that I can learn more and grow. Ive got a few projects in motion at this point with some launch dates set throughout 2021.

Currently operating with my cofounders under https://www.hmnbeing.com where we help businesses dominate the digital space. It's been a longtime coming but we are fully committed to transitioning completely out of our day jobs.

We've been lax about our focus and that has set us back in this transition to our own business exclusively. Basically golden handcuffs as we are all employeed at F500s doing what we love and leading teams.

We’ve got digital products, courses, and a news letter coming this year. Very excited to see how it all goes. Happy to be here.

    Hi everyone 👋,

Found out about Indie Hackers on the recent Acquired podcast, sounds like a great community.

My name's John, co-founder of a high school online education resource called Revision Village. My brother & I bootstrapped this to decent MRR that we can do it full time (~4 yrs in now). We're also playing around with another idea called PuntShare, a social networking app for sportsbetting enthusiasts (like us :)). No revenue on this yet, early days.

I live on the Gold Coast, Australia.

    Cheers!

Hi. I'm Jay. I'm building a media empire, starting with information blogs and paid subscription newsletters. I have no idea how I stumbled onto IH, but it already feels like a good place to be. Goals: Just do the work and launch already; automate/delegate as much of the grunt work as possible. @rosiesherry, Where should I start inside this community?

Hi there I'm a young aspiring entrepreneur my product that I produce are leaded and unleaded popsicles. I would love and greatly appreciate any pointers that can be shared. I am aware of the fact that no man is and island that is why I've embraced the thought of outside help. I am also looking to start my own brand of cigars. Both of these ideas I've came up with are truly my pride and joy and I hope to one day put a smile on every individuals face that has the chance to embrace my products. While these may be my business ideas that I hold close to my heart I do not intend on limiting myself to just that I am open to new ideas and ventures daily. I am here to learn , to empower others , to motivate , to encourage and to simply make a change that will ultimately create a better life not for me but my future generation. My goals are not personal they are generational. I cant wait to speak with others. Thank you in advance for reading and ultimately helping.
    All the best sincerely,
    A young innovator.
