Welcome, introduce yourself! (Week of Feb 16th)

Rosie here -- the Indie Hackers community manager. Welcome! 👋

This short guide is meant to help you get the most out of Indie Hackers.

First, introduce yourself!

Indie Hackers is a community of people helping each other build profitable businesses and side projects. The key word here is "community." Don't be shy!

For starters, take a second to introduce yourself and share your goals in the comments below. 👇

Just say a few words about who you are, why you're here, and what you hope to accomplish or learn in 2020.

Take a moment to say hello to someone else as well!

Dive into learning.

We've interviewed hundreds of successful indie hackers. I recommend reading a few of their stories. It's a great way to get an overview of what's possible.

@csallen also puts out podcast episodes if reading isn't your thing!

Next, get started!

There's no time like the present. Check out the "Start Here" page for a list of practical steps and articles that can help you take action.

Not only will it help you get started, but it should also introduce you to some of the best parts of the Indie Hackers community.

This is just the tip of the iceberg! If you're ever feeling lost or confused, post in the Meta group or tag me (@rosiesherry) in any comment or post.

Don't forget to introduce yourself and say hi to someone else below! 🤗

I'm a software engineer who started a company year ago to develop SAAS to be able to work from home. So far, I had trouble motivating myself so I'm not too far along me project. I currently work as technical support so I can pay the bills and this is a demanding job leaving me to tired too have motivation left at night to program my SAAS.
Recently, I had a different idea for a product in electronics, which field I'm new to, and looking for seed funding so I could pursue this further and maybe employ some smart people to help me.

    1. 1

hey are you guys ok if: hi it's been a long time we met yesterday, nice to meet again, thought of seeing this and typing here, not though not a bad idea. it seems that work from home is a good option always, staying with family always. nice to know.

Hi everyone! I'm a full stack software engineer from Los Angeles. I've been working professionally for over a decade now :) For the past two years, my wife and I have been dreaming of taking a sabbatical and working on our own products, and this is the year we are going to do it. We are thinking of putting our stuff into storage, traveling and living in countries where the cost of living is much cheaper while we build our product. Exciting to be here, it would be great to connect with like minded indie hackers!

    1. 2

Hey really interesting i join here for same minded like you

Hello Everyone! I'm a Digital Designer/Frontend Developer from Sweden. I'm currently trying to build a website creator that builds gatsby sites with the information taken from a conversational UI instead of a visual one. I will try out to the prototype with a customer in the next couple of weeks, so I'm quite nervous. Besides that I'm freelancing, mostly making websites for small-medium sized companies.

  8. 3

Hi everyone, I'm Xiang, a telecom software engineer from China.
I learnt this community from many interviews. Thank you for sharing those great resources. I hope I can start my own work soon and become one of you :)

  9. 2

    hey folks!

honestly, i've been a "silent" fan (and follower) of Rosie for a while and she's really the "draw" here... i mean, shit... @rosiesherry just "gets community"!

    anyways...

i'm an entrepreneur (solo-founder after having a tough split with cofounders... more details on that later perhaps!) who just pivoted his venture-backed startup for the 3rd time (long-read here... if you're bored: http://blog.yen.io/yen30/)!

we're just in the beginning stages of building out our product and our community as well! it's a very exciting time for us as we're still exploring the early-stages of customer discovery, validation, and creating tight feedback cycles.

    shit, we're rebooting everything practically!

this isn't my first rodeo, as they say, and i've built 4 other venture-backed companies... two of which experienced some fun outcomes... but, i have still a ton to learn... and being uncomfortable is one of my favorite-not-favorite things to do... if that makes sense.

but, my REAL favorite "wins" were the smaller indie side projects that made some decent revenue at certain points in time.

for instance, i had a macOS app that won "Best Apps of the Year" award from Apple in 2014 and 2015 and it was making a little over $1k per day! that was fun.

truth be told... i'm a bit more of an "indie hacker" than professional startup person. i've always been that way and i can't imagine i'll change out of it at this point... i'm 37, married with 3 kids...a teenager too! i'm too old (i feel super old).

i love sharing what i know. i open source most of what i do to the public, from an open source handbook for my company ( https://github.com/yenio/handbook ) to a daily vlog on youtube where i even go as far as sharing how much money we have in the bank (and writing my monthly update to my investors!): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qWWhh7IoSBk

(right now, we have a little over $1.1m from our ~$4.1m raised... yes, we've burned a lot of it just in product discovery and RnD... fuuuuuckkkkkkkk!)

i hope i can share some of my experiences with all of you! i have a lot to give and you can hit me up anytime... i'm hanging out mostly on twitter... so, feel free to slide into those DMs like what.

    http://twitter.com/yenFTW/

    1. 2

      Woah. Hello. Let's talk! :D

      1. 2

i've sent you DMs! i apologize in advance if i seem all over the place right now.. so excited to be building!

Hi, I'm a backend developer using the dotNet stack from Nigeria. Joining this community to connect with people to get more insights, develop and grow within the tech space.

  11. 2

Hey guys - Longtime listener (IH Podcast) first time poster. Trying to build a couple side projects as an MVP...

currently without code...and looking for some help.

  12. 2

Hello. I'm Roccio, from Mexico, and I joined because I want to build my side SaaS business and travel.

  13. 2

Hello everyone. I joined this community to learn from like minded people. I am employed full time in the corporate sector and actively seeking a way to build something profitable so that I can work for myself and become more financially secure. I am not a programmer like many of you here but I have build sites on WP and fairly advanced in tech. Many of my projects are still in the planning phase.

  14. 2

Hey friends! I'm a hybrid creative / developer. I run a YouTube channel about software development, been a front end dev for three years, freelance as a motion graphics artist and am now transitioning into IOS dev with a view to create some wicked AR experiences. I might even try make a video game this year, who knows!

I'm hoping to build out a series of apps / digital products to ensure i'm financially solid, while also documenting as much of the process on my channel. End goal is to have enough streams of revenue I can focus on building and creating as I see fit. Thrilled to be here :D

  15. 2

Hi, I am a software engineer and an amazon seller. I am trying to build my own cosmetics brand and let the world know and use it.

  16. 2

Hiya! Kelley here from Northern California. 1 hour from everywhere interesting (San Francisco, Silicon Valley, Reno, Nv...well, a couple of hours from there, Fresno, Sacramento).

I'm a self-taught front-end developer who's trying to figure out a niche. I've not worked professionally yet, as I'm kinda in "tutorial hell", but also because imposter syndrome is so difficult to overcome. ☹️

I've always been an "idea" kinda gal, but am easily distracted by the next idea that I come up with.

I'm looking to get and stay focused. I want to be able to take one of my many ideas and make them tangible. I'm also a helper. I'd like to assist someone in some capacity with their idea/project.

Howdy y'all! I'm glad to be here for myself, and the community.
    😁

    1. 1

Just start! 😀 It's not the project/app but the process, don't be too hard on yourself and set the expectations too high that you won't hit them.

Every developer that i have bet feels like an imposter lol and i get paid to do it and so do they.

It never goes away you will never know enough.

But what you can do is focus on the fundamentals. You got this. Never give up.

  17. 2

Hi, All. I'm a software developer from the Midwest looking to develop a SAAS to transition into working remotely hopefully abroad. Also, looking to improve myself by learning some new skills.

Hey Everyone!! Tara here. I’ve spent my career in Health IT and all facets of health care, HHS, ultimately consulting with Government to modernize Health and Human Services (HHS) legacy systems and improve patients access to services and supports; develop case management systems; the Healthcare exchange, implement waiver programs, fraud and abuse, and a slew of other things. My career took a turn 3 years ago when I was diagnosed with my first of three rare disease diagnosis’. I’m also still awaiting another diagnosis that doctors know I have (they labeled it a generic metabolic disease) but can’t seem to pinpoint exactly which metabolic disease it is. Both my professional and personal experiences have given me a very unique lens into healthcare and the gaps within the system, as well as knowing ways to fix and improve these gaps. I’m hoping to find others also interested in the Health IT, healthcare space to partner with, where I can use my experience, knowledge, and creativity to help fix the broken system in hopes that others can have a better experience. Tech is finally getting more involved in the health space but things aren’t happening quick enough. EHR, PHR, EMRs are lacking functionality and are antiquated. Both patients and providers are suffering and it’s getting worse, not better. Other industries have had the functionality that we need in the Health sector for years!!!! Let’s just use one app for exp. StyleSeat is an app in the Beauty industry where I can go to search for a beautician based on availability, type of service, price, location, quality (reviews) but if I need a medical procedure or need to see a neurologist or neurosurgeon, good luck. And that’s just one example of functionality in other industries that we need in healthcare. I can’t imagine how challenging it is for someone without any knowledge in the healthcare sector because I’ve struggled tremendously and I spent my entire career in this field.

    1. 1

Amazing, you are doing great, maybe you may offer your consulting health services in South America

  19. 2

Hey Rosie nice to meet you! Excited to be here!

  20. 2

Hey I'm Luis from Mexico, to be honest I want to learn from other people to become a better programmer because I feel like I dont know much...

    1. 1

Do not be too difficult with yourself. A long time ago, some wise person gave me an advice: fake it, until you make it. I think it applies very well to programming, because you can not grow your coding skills without coding. If you wait to have the skill to code, your will never coder anything (and as I learned on IH, code is not all there is to create successful products).

Hi everyone my name is Gerald and I'm a Temple University student working on a fashion app. I'm looking for a developer who may have an interest in fashion

    Hello!
My name is Jordan I'm a software engineer and I've been working on two different side projects at the moment.

blackmenbookclub.com: a way to bring black men together around the idea of reading together. I've launched a newsletter focused on it at: https://blackmenbookclub.substack.com/

I've also been working on a iOS app called Lionheart. A way to record your story and share them with friends. https://lionheart.launchaco.com/

I'm working on figuring out the best way to scale my newsletter and get more feedback from my app. Would love to connect with more people grinding it out working on projects and share more from my story.

        Thanks so much!
It really got started while I was working on another startup with a few other close friends that happened to be black as well. We would get together and brainstorm product ideas and began to also share books and notes that could help us quickly catch up with what the other had read.

I always felt like the idea of a mind-bending group of hyper intellectuals in the black community was missing and needed to be filled.
Luckily the domain was open! I've been working on it on and off for about a year now and I've started to really pick it up recently.

        Cheers.

Hello everyone. I am Navin. Have been working on https://buildastack.com for a while. Now that it is close to launch, I want to make sure it reaches a large number of people. It is free, helps people choose software for their business stack and has been built with NoCode.

Oh.. and I am big proponent of no/low code. For me, anything that provides an API is a nocode tool. Not just visual coding tools like Bubble.

Love Makers. If you are one and need help, pm/dm me.

Hey y'all, my name it Thomas from anything.io. I am joining to help me stay motivated seeing everyone's progress and share more of my own progress with the community. Big fan of the podcast since years

    1. 1

      Hey welcome!

I'm curious about anything.io - how or why do people need to collect images? What are the potential use cases for it?

      1. 1

        Hey Rosie

For the how - typically on Pinterest or other
More specialist sites like are.na bookmarking one image at the time.

On anything you point it to a source you like say someone’s Instagram feed and you never have to go back and bookmark new images it’s automated.

For the who - designers in the broadest sense pride themselves on their
Image collections as a point of reference as a tool and sometimes even as a point of identity as in “that’s what I am into therefore that’s who I am”.

I use it everyday to search for reference photography for shots (I am a director in vfx) for myself or artists.

        Thomas

  35. 2

Hey y'all. I am Adel and I am a student at UBC. I have a lot of experience building hackathon projects which I will hopefully be able to convert to side hustles one day. I have a little bit of experience in the industry while working as an intern at various companies located in Vancouver.

I'm a 48 year old game developper looking to start 3 small-scale projects in 2020. I can't wait to see if this site will help me get going!

I'd like to hear more about older devs like me that are willing to make things, start from scratch, etc.

I'm pretty sure there are devs here of all ages around here, a good place to keep an eye out on would be the Developers group.

Hello, my name is Greg. Still thinking what I want to do or contribute. Working on a startup idea for the past two years, made no progress on it but on the flip side no one, amazingly, has come in with the idea so far and I think it could be really special. I'm a DevOps engineer by day, bit of Golang and lots of back end infrastructure experience for, oh, about 30 years now. Not many hairs left, but still there's room to take on some more risks if I can push idea into action. Love what this site is about, excited to join!

  46. 2

Hi, my name is John. Working out my career experience into a new product and diving into data science.

    Hello,
I go by washedDeveloper. It’s kinda a funny name but I’m really into sneakers and reselling. I’m currently developing a bot to automate the purchasing of limited or exclusive sneakers from Shopify based sites. I almost always do backend/algorithmic work. I plan to expand into frontend work so I can link my bot to a electron/react frontend. But as for now I am purely focused on making the bot from the backend point of view. Most of work is done in NodeJS or Python. As for the bot I am using exclusively NodeJS. If you want to reach out and chat please message me. You can add me on Discord at washedDeveloper#6412 and follow my Twitter at @washedDeveloper.

    Hi everyone.
My name is Rishab. I am a full-stack software developer who has been pondering on the idea of having a startup since I was a kid. Although I had only 2 ideas that I think could make a difference, I have been keeping myself busy with umbrella, that I still need to learn more before proceeding. Looking forward to learn to e-meet you all, learn from your experiences, and push through my limits, and build something truly meaningful for the community.

  49. 2

Hi all! I'm Drew. I lurk quite a bit on r/startups so I'll try not to do the same here. I'm from the "Founder/Have an Idea but Don't Know How to Code" cohort of founders, but have since taught myself to code and can help others that may be in that same situation. Also doing things relating to news. If you read this and don't reply, nice to digitally meet you nonetheless!

Hi all, I happen to be a self-taught developer from Nigeria. I enjoy doing server side more, probably because I am not good with colors, at least so I think. that does not mean I don't do front-end tho. I am just partial about back-end. Lol

I'll be glad if I could be shown around.

Call me Goddy. Do have a great day.

Hello everyone! I'm a support agent/software developer from the Midwest. I'm here to build some side projects in the digital art space. I'm not much of an artist myself, but want to help in the creative process somehow.

  58. 1

Hey everybody! I'm a dev who just co-founded his first business / project with three other partners. We're all looking to bootstrap something as a learning experience, the chance to apply our skill, and the ability to really own something, a dream goal being that maybe eventually one or two of us can quit our jobs and work on it full-time.

  59. 1

I am an entrepreneurship student living in Barcelona but originally from Austria.

I will graduate later this year and I am currently thinking about what I should do after. I definitely want to found my own startup sooner or later but I am still looking for an exciting opportunity to do so. In the meantime, the plan would be to join an early stage startup in order to gain some work experience and to learn more about whats out there.

  60. 1

I'm a software engineer who has procrastinated on building a product for a couple years. I felt technically incapable a couple years ago, but that has changed recently. I'm deciding to spend more time in this community to build up my motivation to the point where I will dedicate hours of my time each day to working on a product.

My product idea is for an API-first BI tool. Most BI tools like Tableau assume you have a RDBMS to connect to, and that everything is relatively denormalized and organized. APIs are not this way at all, and I think performing ad hoc analytics on them is difficult.

This idea has some technical challenges, and I'm not sure it even has a market. I don't fully understand how to validate a market idea like this, which is why I've been so hesitant. Still, I feel like the idea CAN work, if executed properly (isn't that every idea)?

  61. 1

I am full stack developer enuthaistic in product development which can reach the global market with a limited set of audiences

  62. 1

Hello everyone! My name is Michael, I'm a Front-End Web Developer from Tampa, FL. I'm a self-taught web developer that has been working in the field for 4 years now. Most of my learning has come from Online tutorials from YouTube, Codecademy, FreeCodeCamp, Udemy, and more. My skills are basic HTML, CSS, and Javascript. Since I work for a small marketing company I have to do a wide range of tasks. I spend most of my time doing web updates, hosting maintenance, new web builds, deployment, and SEO.

I'd like to improve my skills in the Front-End by learning more about front-end frameworks like React. My projects at work are really simple websites and we just use WordPress for everything. So most of the time I'm using plugins instead of coding any javascript.

I have a few ideas for projects but nothing that I'm currently working on. I've joined Indie hackers to get involved in the start-up community and learn how to start turning my ideas into reality.

If you are in the Tampa Bay area and would like to network feel free to send me a message!

Hi - I've been working in the tech industry for 20 years - building, leading and managing teams delivering software and hardware products and platforms. 4 years ago i started a side project and I was laid off in October and decided to try to turn my side project into something more . While I have a lot of experience with building and delivering software, the marketing/social/business side of building a community of engaged online users is new to me. Hoping to learn and grow from this community.

Hi all! 👋 I'm Joe, a digital nomad who loves to play board games.

Traveling full-time makes it hard to find places to play my favorite board games. It always starts with a simple Google search and before you know it you have seven Facebook tabs open trying to figure out which events are actually going to happen!

So I built weTabletop.com to help players find local tabletop, card, and board game events. I launched a few months ago and have grown traffic to 10,000 monthly players!

February has been focused on making it a real business. I still haven't closed my first sale but I think I am very close. One week countdown here we go!

Hi everyone, I'm currently a product manager for a two-sided online marketplace in Asia. Before the product role, I worked in professional services for a SaaS company for a few years and have a strong programming background back to the 90s. Programming is one of my hobbies.

Like most of the indie hackers, I have 2 entrepreneurship journeys in the past. In the first journey, I built an online course marketplace where I was the sole member of the business, I developed and launched the product, developed clients and user awareness via SEO. I managed to attract over 200 schools joining and obtained 10K visits a day. However, I didn't realize the benefit of bringing co-founders and investors until my saving burned out before seeing the breakeven day. That's my first lesson learned.

In my second journey, I joined a team of 3 to build a fintech startup. This time we managed to obtain pre-seed funding and launched our payment product in the UK and Asia, and generating revenue. However, the big boss (CEO) established unconvincing company strategies result in a massive exit of co-founders including myself. So my lesson learned is that unaligned partners could kill a good product.

So now I'm more interested in starting small, profitable side-projects and would be happy to meet people alike in this community.

Hi everyone, I come from an IT operations and systems engineering background. I currently work in a senior engineering role in financial services. I'm originally from Estonia but been based in Sydney, Australia for the past 6+ years.

Early last year I stumbled upon Harvard's CS50 course on edX. That sparked in me a new-found interest in coding, particularly web development. I'm still a long way from being able to code up something great but am slowly making progress week by week.

I discovered Indie Hackers a couple of months ago and fell in love with the idea. I don't have any concrete ideas that I would like to work on as of yet but I've been binge listening the podcast and feel like I should definitely hang around here for inspiration :)

Hello, I'm Justin. Currently a CS student and full time construction inspector. With work and school taking up all my time, I have very little time to code unless it's between semesters. I've taken 2 C++ classes and have learned a little Swift on my own. I really enjoy building these small programs and apps. Hoping to make a career out of it soon!

Hi everyone. I'm Michał from Warsaw, Poland working as a software engineer full time. As my side project I'm working on a tool to detecting moved blocks of code on GitHub pull requests so that it will be easy to see the some parts of code were moved from one place to another. I already have working prototype which I hope to show you shortly.

Hi, I'm Tar. I am a product designer working on validating a few ideas I've had over the years to decide on which ones to commit to. I hope to learn a lot from this community as opposed to working in isolation and shooting in the dark.
Glad to be in good company.

Hi Everyone! I am a PHP developer from the UK. My goal is to escape the 9 - 5, become my own boss and spend more time with my daughter. My skills sit mostly in Web Development but I would like to try and motivate myself more to look into marketing / strategy. Having the skills to build something awesome won't mean anything if no one knows about it.

    Hello everybody!

I'm a self-taught (Swedish) full-stack programmer who entered the world of Game-Development almost by accident, now having 3 pc games up and running on steam. I recently decided to start some new side projects, mainly focused on the game development market, for example we already have a anti-cheat engine and a game oriented support system, but I think there is a lot I could learn on starting new services and/or improving my methods on my current projects.

I thought this community might inspire me, and hopefully I might inspire someone in the future with a post of some kind. Also, I believe there is potentially a lot of like-minded people here, which is always nice!

    Greetings from Sweden,

    Fred

    Hi,
I'm a non-tech founder of a mobile Next Gen fitness technology company responsible for all things except actual development. We're in Year 2, bootstrapped with a product out on the market with paying customers and some corporate pilots running. I'm here to connect with fullstack App Developers (React Native), Front End devs as well, product marketers, quick learners, go-getters who are interested potentially joining my company. Also, seeking a potential tech co-founder who is passionate about improving health and wellness for people now and as we age. Let's make health & fitness easier and more fun! Interested in our investing strategy? Happy to talk about that, too. Looking forward to connecting with you!

    Hey, I'm Delano

I'm an illustrator/art director based in Jamaica. My background in design is mostly print oriented and I'm making my way into more digital work.

I've several years of experience creating branding, advertising and such, but I'm more interested now in creating my own product, digital or otherwise. I'm drawn to creating a product that involves education/self-improvement/gaining high-performance - as these are traits I desire to curate in myself, and am enthused to witness them in other people.

As such, I've recently started a blog where I discuss brand design, design leadership and brand reviews at thebranditself.com.

That blog came out of my desire to do/learn something different that will get me closer to creating a useful product. Every little step counts, particularly in my case as I'm not a sociable person nor a 'business-mind'. I won't let those attributes stop me, or use them as excuse when I stub my toe.

Apart from my career ambitions, I'm a student in the German language and I enjoy oil painting and writing. I've begun learning to drive as well. Put it off for years because my mind tends to wander, and that makes me less confident behind the wheel. Since starting some personal projects such as my blog, I've developed some more initiative in myself that I'll apply in my drive lessons.

I'm interested in hearing/reading/learning the stories of every who has taken the reigns to improve themselves/careers. I look forward to collaborating/learning from you guys here, and hopefully I can be of some use/inspiration to you as well.

I got a mortgage loan in 2018 through Chase, and in late 2019; I experienced financial hardship and fell behind on my payments. I had months of late payments before I was introduce to this business minded hacker. I’m very grateful to 760PLUS CREDIT SCORE for helping me clear my loans and late payments from my report. I taught it would not be possible for my credit to be fixed within the short period of time agreed on. I want to thank Miss Elizabeth for giving me the information and their contact last month. Hey everyone! I graduated in 2018 and right after graduation I started a full-time job as an Associate Software Engineer and at the same time, I started pursuing Masters from one of the most reputed institutions in my country. Life is going like a rocket fired from then and now I have one year left at my masters and I am also promoted to Software Engineer.

For two years I am going circles with my job and degree. My degree is in its final parts and now I want to create something that should have a positive impact on at least a proportion of society. I want to do that with the work I do and I am here learn from all of you.

    Cheers!

Hi Everyone, my name is Dennis and for the past 20 years or so I've been an Entrepreneur and Product Manager.

I've bought and sold companies, raised capital, been on the other side of that table, managed product teams to build everything from enterprise AI systems to casual games, etc. Essentially I've been selling all my life. :)

About a year ago I got sick and I was out of the running for 11 months. Now I'm back (fit as a fiddle) and I've decided to dedicate the rest of my professional life to my passion: Helping early stage B2B SaaS startups land their first (up to 1000) customers. So my (currently still) side hustle is called hellorevenue.co (website coming soon).

btw, I'm going old school emoji because my mac refuses to respond to ctrl-cmd-space or listen to my emoji keyboard. If you have any idea how to fix it (I've googled and tried a shitton of things), please let me know. \o/

    Hello World! 👋

My name is Kelvin and i've been a self taught developer working for marketing companies for 3 years i quit last year in the summer to start my own marketing company because thats what i thought i wanted to do. i guess i was wrong because that business snowballed into nothing. we had one client and i just wasn't passionate about having 100 bosses lol.

Like most of you i want to have freedom, not only financial but creative (to build whatever, whenever, however).

My goal for this year is to launch my own web app that will allow digital professionals with a roadmap/system/framework on how to become healthier by learning how to cook and meal prepping to save money and live a healthier life.

The way that i envision it is that you will be able to learn the basics of cooking and meal prepping while adding proven recipes with video and pictures and instructions on how to cook the meal.

Also it will give you a shopping list and tell you where the best prices are for you and even coupons on how to save the most amount of money.

It will tell you about macros and calories so that you don't have to think about it. If you goal is to lose weight then you will know that you are eating the right amount of calories every single day without sacrifices flavor.

I know it's a lot i'm kinda just free flowing lol, This is my first of many post here.

To wrap it all up i want to create a cooking app to help digital professional increase there health by teaching them how to cook and providing a roadmap/framework for them to start on a solid foundation.

      Hi Kelvin,
I love food, too! Have you developed Apps and if so, do you use React Native?

      1. 1

It's like fuel for the body mind and soul. Eating the right food makes a world of difference.

I personally have had so experience with react and not to much with native but from what i understand its pretty much the same code with a little bit of tweaks.

Hello everyone. My name is Javi Sola a visual brand designer in Tampa, FL. I'm in the process of finding ways to build a visual branding productized service or a Webflow website/landing page productized service. I'm torn between the two ideas because I love creating visual branding but also love working with Webflow to create websites/landing pages. The reason I want to build this scalable business is to leave my corporate job soon.

Joined IH to learn from the vast knowledge of all the members, and perhaps make some friends along the way.

My husband is a software engineer and we always pitch great business ideas to our friends which we end up finding build by someone else later. The upside is that I spend a lot of my time daydreaming about the projects I'd rather work on. I don't want to become like the jaded and cynical people I work with. So I'm here to get inspired and gain some perspective. And hopefully make a difference.

It's great reading everyone's bios. A warm welcome to us all. :)

Hi There! 13+ year IT veteran who became a newbie python developer from Houston, TX. Currently working a full time IT job to pay the bills that's pretty laid back and gives me time to work on side projects and side hustles. I've had lots of side hustles that have either made little money or failed. I do enjoy flipping stuff on the side for that extra cash.

I want to become an expert in Python by building different projects to eventually be able to have a successful SAAS. Becoming a digital nomad that lives life using development and building new impactful tech is one big goal of mine. Not sure yet what industry specifically and what kind of SAAS but my IT experience in different industries has allowed me to see many problems which I think can become opportunities.

Excited to be part of this community.

Hi! This is Nishkarsh. Am an accountant by education and software developer by choice. Like to dabble in no-code stuff. Been using Wappler.io to build web apps for over a year now - it is low code, not zero code TBH. But the flexibility, prowess and speed of dev is a good balance to have. Love Single Page Applications (SPA).

Looking forward to get inspiration and maybe collaborate to build quality, SPA web applications.

Hi everyone, I'm Kacper, a 16yrs old guy who develops new apps & most of the projects that I do are new web apps/sites.

    1. 1

Hello Kacper, what kind of web apps/sites do you create?

      1. 1

Hi @sobee, I should have written this answer 3 months ago but I forgot about it. So, my answer to your question is, when an idea comes into my head I just want to realize it. Currently, I'm working on a Marketing service for music artists to help them reach more fans & get more plays on Spotify & other music streaming platforms. I am also working on a music streaming service. I'm constantly teaching myself new stuff & improving my web apps. Some weeks ago I made my own file hosting. Not a normal one, my file hosting (called FileLeaks file deletes any kind of information when you upload your files that would get you traceback. I really like the design of it & it was fun to code. There is a one more project that I'm working on but that's a secret for now. I have many ideas for new web apps but I don't have time to make them all at once. So yea, that's pretty much it of my answer to your question

I hope to learn more from people on this platform.

Hola from Mexico, I am a SW engineer who has tried to build a business for n-th time and have failed many times. However my best and most rewarding experiences have been from those attempts . After so many years trying it, I find it difficult to stay focused or motivated.

My objective is to find motivation and find the right partner to develop my latest idea, also I would love giving back to others in this great community.
Idea: "Mobile app to allow home owners to request for visitor pass."

I heard Pieter Levels podcast and I will try to apply one of his suggestions and just do it.

Hi folks, I quit my job two years ago to work full time on the Open Source FaaS / Serverless platform OpenFaaS. So far I've learned a lot and am exploring SaaS and open-core add-ons for both OpenFaaS and my newest project inlets - a Cloud Native Tunnel that works through NAT and firewalls for HTTP and TCP traffic.

Hoping to learn from you all - and found my way here via Mattias Geniar's post on his SaaS.

I'm looking to start up my own SAAS/development company and have plenty of ideas that could potentially flourish. Currently I take clients and build websites for them from the bottom up but I use that as funding to take my SAAS part of the company to the next level. I'm glad to be here and I'm hoping to use this as a motivation factor for when I get home from work to keep pushing forward.

Joining here to connect with like minded people! My goal is to build web services to allow me and my family to move up North. I know I will achieve this, but I want to achieve this dream before I hit 30. I turn 27 this summer.

I am about to release my first product this year, which is https://walkway.io - which allows people to find nearby places quickly and easily. It is already available with a very limited daily free tier to do searches.

Joined IH community about a few weeks ago first time with a different username, but made some branding changes and now starting again.

Happy to hear each one of your stories and share my own journey as I will reach my dreams and move up North as a self-built entrepreneur.

Hi, i am a software engineer trying to make the lives of people dealing with mental health issues slightly better. I am currently in the process of building a one person online business. The product is a Web Application embedded with an AI conversational assistant which should eventually act in the future as a virtual life coach / therapist. I am almost done building my MVP and hoping to launch by April 1st to test my assumptions, get feedbacks and see if i should pivot or not. Hoping to find a community of like minded people on indiehackers.

    Hi,

I'm a software engineer and am kindling a passion for game creation and rekindling my passion for software development by learning new things. I hope to meet people, discuss ideas and help others as best I can with the knowledge I have.

Hey there, my name is Kevin. Right now, I'm building something to help people set up Agreements to protect themselves or their businesses.

I had been screwed over by a Contractor who didn't complete nor transfer his work over despite getting the full payment. I was unable to use available legal channels because they were prohibitively costly and complex for my startup then. Meanwhile, I've heard from freelancer and startup friends who had faced similar situations and like me, they too had no feasible means to seek help for their situations.

I really want to work on tackling the issue of dishonest people screwing others over and getting away with it. Hope it'll helps others too.

Anyway, I was recommended by a friend to get connected here because I want to move away from VC funding model (another story for another time).

I would love to connect with the great community & people here, to help this product grow and fly. Would love to connect for social stuff too - so please reach out either way! :)

Hi everyone New a long time ago i've decided to give up my job as a postman in scotland and move to france to have tour de france just outside my doors. and yes, started to learn coding to afford a cup of coffee and a baguette :D it means that right now i'm freelancing and building my web app in a spare time.

Hi all. Software developer from New Jersey. Came here after hearing an interview with @csallen on the Software Engineering Unlocked podcast. Just hoping to learn more about what's possible.

  179. 1

    Hi there!
My name is Christiaan van Eijk. I'm a 22 year old dutch designer/marketer/developer. I have always been very passionate about business, and the way marketing and design can be utilized in a human way to grow that business. I started helping my dad launch his most successful company at the age of 11, and never stopped working since. I have built custom (web)apps, designed websites, run successful digital marketing campaigns, etc.

I feel like I've always been really (REALLY) good at working for someone when it feels like I'm being of serious help, when I can solve a large problem by introducing them to my vision or solution. I'm a quick thinker. But... I really want to build something that can generate income without me having to personally be the guy that customers talk to and expect work from. I want to come up with an idea that has a positive impact for people that want to create a positive impact themselves. Haven't found what that idea should be though...

Currently working under my business: www.ykedigital.nl
Very intruiged about this indie-hackers community, cannot wait to connect with like-minded people over here. Really hope I can be of value to others..

    Have a great day everyone!

Hi everyone! My name is Gil, I'm from Portugal and I'm almost 42 years old, and I have been working with IT and development for almost 20 years.
A few years ago, I started a SaaS project on my own that became too big for a solo, and takes me a lot of my time and effort.
I’m still working for a technology company, but it’s changing the business model to the field I don’t really like, and I’m also spending a lot of my time, sometimes more than 9-10 hours a day, including some weekends, and more and more hours are needed ...

Long story short, in the past two years (almost) I have really started to strive to finish my project as humanly as possible, but it turns out that sometimes I also need to sleep .... (who knew!)

I really hope to find people here that I can really identify with, that I can give some feedback on my work (almost finished).

Looking forward to reading your stories and also sharing mine.

    Cheers!

    Hi community,
I am Jack. I am a finance professional.

I am creating a networked on-demand finance talent marketplace. The network will consist of finance talent, mostly from developing English speaking countries.

The platform will offer them mentorship, training/upskilling opportunities to be more digital-savvy and to get them remote job opportunities.

It will also enable startups to access affordable and tech-savvy finance and data analytics talent.
Hoping to learn a lot from this community on how to execute this idea.

  192. 1

Hi everyone, I'm currently software engineer working manly with Spring and Angular, but my true passion is in react/ react native. For 2020 I'm looking to build a decent side project to help dive deeper into the world of react native.

Hi everyone! Excited to be here! I’m a designer from Brazil. Initially I was a graphic designer focused on branding, then I started to work with clients from tech, fell in love with it, then completely transitioned to digital and UI. I always wanted to build something. Started a few things but was never able to finish it. Right now I’m doing a post grad in positive psych and very focused on investigating how to use design and technology to promote wellbeing and wellbeing only. My goal is to build apps that help people to flourish and also to create resources for creators to build better, ethical products. I also found this community on the same YouTube video mentioned by @RoopG

  196. 1

    Hello everyone, I am Pascal.
It took me quite a while to post here because it meant I am actually up to doing something, so yeah, that's what I want to do on 2020.
I am a German CS student in the last mile of my education and since I can remember I always wanted to be independent and create things I like.
So here I am, looking to get started and hopefully make some friends on the way, but most importantly to learn and maybe even to teach something :)

Do you guys have some Ideas where to go next (besides the "Start Here" Section)?
Have a nice - whatever timezone you're in

Hey. I'm a Software Developer. Building web & mobile apps. Currently working on a productivity app to enhance your focus and fight procrastination.

Hi, I'm David. I'm working at The Other WorkSpace, a coworking space in Budapest (or as we say in Hungarian "Közösségi Iroda")!

And when I say I'm working this is what I mean:

After a bunch of travelling around and living a kind of nomadic life, I decided to settle in Budapest and to open a coworking space that corresponds to what I was craving for during my travelling around.

I tried quite a few (to be a bit euphemistic) coworking spaces. There sure were good ones, but the majority was just..., well not really pleasant, just basically too crowded, too noisy, too expensive.

So I am basically trying to offer all that is the opposite of what I mostly found, and I may be wrong in assuming that I am not the only one that wants a space where you can work in peace and quiet, where you have actual office chairs that don't hurt your butt, or some other similar things, but I hope not! :)

So I'm basically trying to do my best to give all the comfort, calm, services, and support to create the best possible conditions in The Other WorkSpace in Budapest.

EDIT: So after Christian asked for a link to my coworking space's website I realised (again) how dumb I was and that I should have posted it in the first place, so here it is: https://theotherworkspace.com :)

    1. 2

Hi David! Wow that sounds like a very nice business you got there! I would love to visit your place once I go back to budapest (half-hungarian here). Do you have a website you can share?

      1. 1

Hey Christian! Sure thing, the website is this one: https://theotherworkspace.com or if you prefer it in Hungarian: https://theotherworkspace.com/hu/ ! :)

Thank you for the compliment! I mean it's nice because I'm trying to create something I like and would also like to get if I wasn't doing it, but up until now it's more a source of spending rather than a source of income :D

When are you coming back to the city? / What are you up to? :)

  199. 1

Hi, I’m Siarhei. Started my indie journey about 2 years ago and launching my first project in the upcoming days. Glad to be here

  200. 1

Hey everyone! I'm a ML guy, currently in the process of cofounding an AI platform in Munich (www.maiot.io/core), Germany. After focusing heavily on industrial use-cases like predictive maintenance over the last two years, we managed to build an end-to-end ML platform internally that we think is cool enough to talk to the outside world about!

I heard about IndieHackers from my brother who is a heavy user and says it is the most valuable source for feedback. I'm super curious how people will react to our idea and actively looking for feedback! Cheers!

    1. 1

hey hamzatahir, how did you get into ML? I see it thrown around as a buzzword all over the place and always wondered how you really get into this

      1. 1

I got into it at the end of bachelors degree and then focused on it in my masters! I totally see why its perceived as a buzzword, but in my work I try to cut out the BS and focus on what its really good at! ;-)

        1. 1

Can you recommend a starting point to tip a toe into the topic?

          1. 1

Sure, but for that I need to know from which background you come from. its different depending on what you know already

            1. 1

I'm in the finishing touches of my cs degree and got some experience (1,5 years) building digital products, mostly frontend and ui/ux stuff. Why I'd like to evaluate ML is: I'm imagining a tool that can "push back" the user, e.g. ask questions like "you've spend some time solving this problem, maybe you should take a break". Surely this specific case could be handled easily without any artificial intelligence, it's just an example :D

              1. 2

Ah I see. Well as you're already from a coding background I would suggest you dive straight into some of the great online courses offered at e.g. Udacity https://www.udacity.com/course/machine-learning-engineer-nanodegree--nd009t or even Udemy.

There are also a few good books ranging from the seminal book on deep learning (https://www.deeplearningbook.org/) by Ian Goodfellow, to the 'For Dummies' book. See a great list https://www.tableau.com/learn/articles/books-about-machine-learning

However, IMO, reading books and doing courses are only supplements to actually doing stuff. The moment you have the basic, I would suggest to get your hands on data ASAP and start solving challenges at online platforms like Kaggle (https://www.kaggle.com/). Do not be afraid or overwhelmed. A year ago, I decided to take a once-in-a-lifetime chance to see if I could create online properties with a revenue stream, so my friends and colleagues could help those ideas snowball into something much bigger. Even though it's taken longer than expected - I'm only a month away from crowdfunding my first official attempt at single-handedly releasing a web-based strategy game, based on play-by-mail games from the 80's-90's.

thanks, @rosiesherry - decide to join after years of sitting on ideas, paying to outsource and just not getting things done. Realised I've been a no-code indie hacker for a few years now, but want to get my coding hat back on. Looking forward to it!

Hi Rosie and to the IH community!

Found this community some days ago and decided to join today so I can share my successful business founding story at the end of this year 2020!

Already having ideas for different projects / businesses.

I like to do 3D graphics programming with MonoGame. I set a goal in the past to finish developing a 3D game which I did. It took me a year to do that since I did not know anything about it when I started. I would like to make money from it which I don't at the moment because it never got released to the wild ;-)

I signed up here to help others and to communicate with other people who want to start one or more businesses. I am looking forward to read or listen about the experiences others make or have made in the past :-)

Hi, I'm a 13 year old student from Barcelona. I build a couple websites, and I'm interested of upgrading my skills. I discovered the site in a YouTube video. I don't have any goals, I just hope to get feedback on my sites and help. :D

(sorry for my bad english btw)

    Hello Indie Hackers!

I'm Jonathan and I help game developers create and release their games through my youtube channel youtube.com/TurboMakesGames

It has been a goal of mine to 10x my YouTube subscriber count each year... I ended 2017 with ~20 subscribers, ~200 at the end of 2018, and ~2,000 at the end of 2019. So for 2020 my goal is to hit 20,000.

Also, this year I am going to make some dedicated courses teaching specific technologies in game development... but more on that later 😉

By the end of the year I would like to be in a position where I have significant, regular income coming in from my business where I can at least see the path to leaving my day job (IT Service Technician).

Excited to be part of this community and sharing knowledge between people with similar goals and aspirations 😊

        1st 2 are not.
IoT not exactly, acting as their CTO and helping out startup will release a SaaS tool as part of that to help build embedded OS images. Something I scripted together few years back but want to exposed it as SaaS this year.

Been working on CakePHP shop for a while for a specific niche, will be sold as SaaS.

I started building UI for letsencrypt because I didn't like how certs are handled in rancher server and I wanted to use my own nginx proxy before sending requests to AWS servers. There are more projects, but currently only have time to focus on these ones.

Also lots of OS hardware projects. Still want to finish and release motherboard for Raspberry Pi cluster using compute modules CM3 this year (if I find time) :)

I like the option to switch work when it gets too boring or if you get stuck. I found that switching things up makes me more productive :)

This is amazing. I noted a few typos throughout but nothing major, are these digital tree's or real trees?

it kind of felt a bit misleading to be honest.

But i love the idea of giving back to people in a real and tangible way

@OrangeKoala we'll i really only found one lol sorry the way i phrased it made it sound like the app was littered with it. Typos are so easy to see when you are not staring at lines of code lol.

Where you have quality step at the top its say "plan" but it should be "plant"

I think in the home page before you plant an actual tree on the behave of someone else it would be best to add that context and build up the story so that when they do get to the page where they are ready to push the button it's not just pushing buttons. You'll feel a sense of accomplishment.

I kinda felt lost in a sense of the experience.

Hey Yassin, I am frontend developer myself and always have been tempted by BaaS-es like Firebase, amplify or MongoDB Stitch. Do you have some experience with those or are you building a "regular" REST backend?
