Welcome, introduce yourself! (Week of Jan 10th)

Rosie here -- the Indie Hackers community manager. Welcome! 👋

This short guide is meant to help you get the most out of Indie Hackers.

First, introduce yourself!

Indie Hackers is a community of people helping each other build profitable businesses and side projects. The key word here is "community." Don't be shy!

For starters, take a second to introduce yourself and share your goals in the comments below. 👇

Just say a few words about who you are, why you're here, and what you hope to accomplish or learn.

Take a moment to say hello to someone else as well!

Dive into learning.

We've interviewed hundreds of successful indie hackers. I recommend reading a few of their stories. It's a great way to get an overview of what's possible.

If you prefer audio to reading, check out the Indie Hackers Podcast Network and find a show you like.

Now is the best time to start.

There's no time like the present. Check out the "Start Here" page for a list of practical steps and articles that can help you take action.

Not only will it help you get started, but it should also introduce you to some of the best parts of the Indie Hackers community.

Good luck!

This is just the tip of the iceberg. If you're ever feeling lost or confused, post a question in the Meta group, or tag me (@rosiesherry) in any comment or post.

Don't forget to introduce yourself and say hi to someone else below! 🤗

    Hi Indie Hackers,

I'm Soyapi, developer of Owinna.com, a "LinkedIn for sports" (starting with soccer in Malawi). I work on it as a side project to learn how to build a tech business and keep my hacking skills fresh.

I'm happy join this community to share user stats and milestones as I (try to) grow the business, something I wasn't able to access for tech products in this part of the world when I was starting.

    1. 1

Hi, how’s the tech scene in Malawi? I have met a few Malawians here in CapeTown, always had great chats

Hi, I am a recently barred attorney with entrepreneurial aspirations. I want to build an investment fund that focuses on innovation and ideas meant to improve lives.

    1. 1

Nice idea! Looks like you're into something!

      Make it more tangible :)

      1. 1

Thank you! How would you suggest I do that? I want to get involved in the entrepreneurial/startup community.

        1. 1

Well emotionally deep video and image content might help. Make sure it always ends up positive or hopeful.

A simple idea that changed lives could deliver the message. There's plenty of such stories that changed lives. Once you have one, run a campaign using it as a theme. Here's one from personal experience of having unbearable gastritis which turned out to be what this doctor discovered:

          Discover Magazine:

The medical elite thought they knew what caused ulcers and stomach cancer. But they were wrong — and didn't want to hear otherwise.

For years obscure doctor hailing from Australia’s hardscrabble west coast watched in horror as ulcer patients fell so ill that many had their stomach removed or bled until they died. That physician, an internist named Barry Marshall, was tormented because he knew there was a simple treatment for ulcers, which at that time afflicted 10 percent of all adults.

In 1981 Marshall began working with Robin Warren, the Royal Perth Hospital pathologist who, two years earlier, discovered the gut could be overrun by hardy, corkscrew-shaped bacteria called Helicobacter pylori. Biopsying ulcer patients and culturing the organisms in the lab, Marshall traced not just ulcers but also stomach cancer to this gut infection. The cure, he realized, was readily available: antibiotics. But mainstream gastroenterologists were dismissive, holding on to the old idea that ulcers were caused by stress.

Unable to make his case in studies with lab mice (because H. pylori affects only primates) and prohibited from experimenting on people, Marshall grew desperate. Finally he ran an experiment on the only human patient he could ethically recruit: himself. He took some H. pylori from the gut of an ailing patient, stirred it into a broth, and drank it.

As the days passed, he developed gastritis, the precursor to an ulcer: He started vomiting, his breath began to stink, and he felt sick and exhausted. Back in the lab, he biopsied his own gut, culturing H. pylori and proving unequivocally that bacteria were the underlying cause of ulcers.

I started my journey a few months ago by jumping on the lean start-up methodology(-ies) and getting started with the whole no-code movement. I hope I'll make some great contacts and discoveries here, and will be happy to help whoever I can! GET FIRED UP! #HeavyMetalForever

Hello all, I'm Nick. I've been listening to the show for a year or so now but finally decided to join the community on the site here. I don't really use any "social networks" but I want to participate more and talk with more like minded people like the indie hackers crowd. My kind of people.

Right now I'm running a small production company while I'm learning web development.

My goals are to grow the company in order to delegate and free up some time to dedicate to other hobbies such as web development and starting a new digital company.

Looking forward to participe on this community rather than just consuming all the podcast episodes and reading to all of your posts about your companies (analysis paralysis right?) 😅

Anyway, if you have some questions or need any help on video production, editing or animation, hit me up, I'll be glad to help and return something of value for this amazing community : )

    Hi there.
Happy to be here and share ideas with all of you. I've been coding for years as a hobby and previously worked in tech in a SysAdmin role. I love to do research and find out people's pains and design solutions, but realize that I need to hold myself accountable and build in public so I'm more compelled to ship.

  35. 1

    Hy guys and girls.
My name is Antonio and I am just a guy who works in the marketing department as an employee (didn't get any fancy role name) with a wish to become an iOS developer because I just love Apple and I believe that I can also get on the train with them and make every day a little bit less complicated. Where I stand currently? Well, I started the iOS foundation Bootcamp in December and finished last week with a strong desire to build apps and put some ideas to life and help with resolving some problems. I will leave a link to my first project down below. It isn't something but my girlfriend said that she likes it and believe me she is brutally honest so that's enough for me because I helped her with the problem of finding our photos without scrolling through the photo gallery.
Now I'm basically without any idea and just not doing programming which is very bad from my iOS journey. I would like to explore ideas and grow together with somebody so my doors are open for any idea.
Things I also do which can maybe be of help are graphic design and a little bit of UI design.
I look forward to being a part of this community and maybe make some new friendships. 😊

    Thats all from me.

Hi, welcome! Sounds like a cool project, can we see it somewhere online?

  42. 1

Just want to say hi to every entrepreneur on this community. Having been caught in a 9-to-5 day job now for more than 20 years, this is the year for me to follow my life goal of becoming more independent (again). I have entrepreneurship flowing through my veins. Having had my own freelancing company between 2006 and 2009. I want to go back to those days, now that I have seen all aspects of Customer Journey: from creating awareness through marketing up to delivery of a software product or service.

My idea is to offer my business strategy experience as a consultant from building lean startups, creating strategic company and product roadmaps, marketing plans, up to guiding startup companies to a successful exit.

Great to meet you all virtually!

    1. 1

Nice to meet you! That's alot of experience!

    Hello Folks,
I am Nilpa, an ML professional at one of the largest career portal, based out of the US. Recently I realized that I do not act on my startup ideas ( mostly in Tech) and thought that meeting people who believe in converting ideas into products.
Technically, I mostly work on Computer vision and NLP ML products. However, I have realized recently that having a good grasp on mobile development can help you kick off the idea real quick. Please share your thoughts if it is worth investing some time on mobile app dev as tech founder.

If failures + success sounds good, got plenty :)

I started with this free medical help wiki called freehospital.org. Then worked on a website to find interesting places around you ilikeplaces.com. Followed that by an app to control your news newsmute.com. Now onto creating educational apps.

We just launched the android app:

Hi fellow Indie-hackers. I am Rishi. I have been building technology products for the last 8 years. Right now I (along with a team of 4) am building FigPickle - A backup tool for Figma designers to automate the backup of their work to a cloud storage of their choice. The most frequent question I get is why build a backup tool when Figma "autosaves" to cloud.

We are building this product for 2 reasons

    1. Figma is the gatekeeper to your own work. You might get locked out any day. We are preparing for that eventuality
    2. Deletion/hacking might lead to a loss of your data on Figma cloud. FigPickle will let you choose a storage medium that you like (e.g. Dropbox etc).

I have come here, to get some feedback from the community and words of wisdom for journey ahead.

  54. 1

Hi guys, this is Khalid a full-time freelances and founder of a software company. I am now shifting the company towards product based company rather than a service based company. Before being a freelance and founder of this amazing company I tried 3 mega startups and failed them (Soundcloud Type, Dropbox Type, Udemy Type). I've learned a lot and got financials enough to launch a new product after 2 years of freelancing.

    Wish me luck! :)

Hi! Matt here - I run a digital product studio for the day job but have a backlog of silly side projects that are mildly profitable:

⛏️ Dumb Cuneiform - a service where you send us a short message and we inscribe it into a clay tablet in cuneiform

📚 Charles Williams Library - I designed and published nice collectors' editions of a semi-obscure author's novels

🧛‍♂️ Dracula Daily - this one's free, it's a newsletter that emails you Bram Stoker's Dracula in real time, as the events happen. Starts May 3 BTW!

And lots more, but those are the three that take the most attention lately :)

Hi! I'm Willie and I'm new here. I have an idea for a project and this seems to be the place to go. My idea is essentially a thrift store for indie projects. A place where indie makers can donate their old and unused projects to be used by students that are interested in learning about how to start a company or pursue an idea.

Hi I'm Nova. I am a Full-Stack Software Engineer that focuses on .NET ASP. I joined indiehackers to try and make something for myself and experiment with new technologies I couldn't use in my day job such as ML and Blazor. I can design, develop, and publish an app, but my main issue is that I do not have a community to talk to and get feedback from. That's why I'm glad to have found indiehackers.

    Hi guys,

My name is Michael. I just signed up to the site after listening to the podcast for a few months. I have been interested in coding for a while now. I have completed one Udemy course and am currently undertaking a full stack development course with an institution. My goal is to use coding as a means to start an online business and be able to work remotely. My absolute passion in life is martial arts and I have been fighting for 12 years. I want to be able to work remotely so that I can live, train and fight in places around the world without worrying about a 9 to 5. I have a background in business but have just quit my job to move to Spain and live with my girlfriend, teaching English online and in class. I want to travel the world with her, working online as I go and building a profitable business. I still am unsure as to exactly what sort of business but I'm hoping to get some inspiration from places like Indi Hackers along the way. I look forward to hearing more from you all soon.

    Michael

    Hi all,
Long time viewer, first time posting. I currently work with helping to scale products for rapidly growing startups.

    Hey everyone!
I'm a 16 y/o developer and entrepreneur. I've founded a few profitable micro-startups in the past and I currently work on small side projects

    Open to all messages :)

    1. 1

      Few profitable startups, that's rare!

      1. 1

Yes - 3 to be precise. 2 of them were B2B and had near-zero infrastructure costs. I am really great when it comes to cost cutting . The third one had zero investment but I was able to generate a profit of 250 dollars in one year. Not much but still counts :)

        1. 1

That's really cool! 20$ monthly is quite a good start!

We just launched our app. If you like cloud computing please do check it out. Each download and rating helps alot :)

    Hello Everyone,
I am a game developer and an administrator with 20+years experience. Lately I was more involved with running and administrating an IT company. I was involved with architecture and policy making. But because of the Covid, I dont see a bright future with the company. So I am looking for doing an independent project to keep me involved with what I love and make some money. This is my first day here.

  115. 1

Hello everyone. I am a ux ui designer turned A Software engineer. Here for the articles 😬 and possible collaboration opportunities. Currently building my infrastructure to start projects with one-click. Happy to be here. Happy 2021 🎊🎉

Hello everyone, I am an engineer engaged in development, very happy to join you

  117. 1

Hi all! I’m a Data Scientist/Software Developer working in industry. I love what I do, but have always dreamed of building something myself and am now looking to find a side project i’m passionate about to dedicate my extra time to. Passive income would be a nice outcome, but really, i’ve spent so long on the development side of things that now I just want to start getting more experience on the business side and take on full ownership of something. Awesome to see this community here!

    1. 1

Richard Brandon's "Screw It Lets Do It" and 37 Signals "Getting Real" come to mind :)

Hello! I am the founder of Groundwork (www.hellogroundwork.com), a virtual sales software for home improvement contractors. I am not a strict indie hacker (have raised some capital from angels) but bootstrapped the business to 3k MRR using zapier and airtable as our "product".

My goal is to grow a massive business and sell it but to do so profitably and while maintaining a large share of the equity. I am excited to listen to follow stories in this community and share mine as well.

  119. 1

    Hello all,
I'm a software developer, love what I do and my job, just working on my side project and looking for ideas/inspiration. This past year has made me realise how much I missed the freedom of working from home. Got a few domains that I'm going to try to turn into something, so we'll see how it all goes!

  120. 1

Hello :) I am bobertos and I love coding (especially functional programming). I'm a strict engineer, but I'm trying to wear a business hat more often. I would like to be able not to worry about money, quit my job and code stuff for fun (also do parkour).

  121. 1

Got hooked on the podcast after listening to the Acquired crossover. I've recently picked up coding again for about the 5th time 😀 I've worked at and continue to work at startup companies and recently wanted to get my hands dirty. I'm on a 14 day streak of coding and the idea that I could even supplement my income and one day go it alone is intriguing. I feel like coding will be the key obviously so dedicating myself to it in 2021.

I've recently finshed up a Udemy course on React and feel good about my progress. I'm just going to keep after this thing until I've got it! Looking forward to reading others stories and getting some ideas in the hopper!

    1. 2

I couldn't resist asking if you'd like to learn Cloud Computing as a complete beginner because I built an app for that https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=guru.studybuddy.app.cloudcomputingbeginner

      Coding is fun and addictive.

If you would like to learn Golang (Dropbox and Kubernetes were written using Go), here's a good starting place: https://tour.golang.org/

Python, just start writing. Learn later.

      Good luck!

      I'm a Java guy ;)

      1. 1

Thanks, I will take a look! Hopping into the Redux part of the react course I'm taking but will start digging into the backend a bit too. I took a Go course a year or so ago but never put it to practical use any way. I'm definitely starting to get addicted. Looking for my first side project to take on outside of the app I have at work which is definitely a great place to get the firehose.

        1. 1

Sounds like you're making good ground. May I also interest you in Flutter? If SEO is not a must, flutter is a great and trendy framework https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLjxrf2q8roU23XGwz3Km7sQZFTdB996iG

          Good luck!

  122. 1

Hi all, wow I wasn't expecting so many people to be joining around same time as me.

A friend introduced me to Indie Hackers and been hooked on the podcasts.
Recently started reading some of the posts on the site and am even more hooked.

Felt like I could share some of my stories here and get a few laughs.

On the hustle side... I am curious to see if I can crack the code on passive income. So far I have published a book but it was HARSH!

Though I must say, there is no greater feeling than getting paid for something which has your name on it :)

For now trying to keep it light by writing blog posts on tech topics that interest me and trying to see if anyone would pay for my Pay as much as you want for this free pdf I wrote.

    1. 1

I highly recommend Jersey B Jenkins for anyone wiring fiction or non fiction. His free YouTube videos are quite good.

  123. 1

Hello everyone, cliche opener I know!

I work as a software developer, I love my career but hate my job. I'm just fed up with the corporate grind and the 9-5. Working from home during covid has made me realise how much I dislike being in the office.

I'm going to can find a way to change that in 2021 and hopefully Indie hackers is the site that will help with that.

  124. 1

    Hello guys,
I always think that it takes knowledge, smart work, and dedication to make great ideas come to life. I have been helping make great ideas happen for the past few years and now its time to see things entrepreneurial.
Really happy to join this ecosystem :)

I'm Nick and I'm a content marketer who helps SaaS and B2B companies drive new leads through content. I'm joining Indie Hackers to share insights I'm seeing from campaigns and help new founders put together their content strategy.

          1. 1

Organic would be a great focus. Detailed how-to content could do nicely. Happy to chat if you'd like to discuss.

    Hey Everyone,

Mo here. I'm currently building a tool aimed at helping developers build apps faster, by reducing all the boilerplate/repetitive stuff you have to do over and over and leaving you with the business logic to code. It's low-code for devs who want to go fast.

I found this community cause I was looking for others on similar entrepreneurial journeys that I can join. Prior to what I'm currently doing, I was always a company man. I spent over a decade working in leadership positions at large tech companies.

Excited to meet everyone, share insights and see your work.

    Mo

    1. 2

Nice! I do that too but internally. Have you tried Jetbrains MPS and other meta programming approaches?

      1. 1

No, but if you're up for a quick chat, I'd love to learn a little more about it and show you my alternative and get your thoughts?

        1. 1

Sure thing. I'm at ravindranathakila / gmail.

    Hy Indie Hackers!

My name its João Antunes and I’m a Portuguese CRM & Marketing Automation Specialist.
I have been working with multiple CRM and Marketing Automation tools for at least 5 years and counting! I love what i do and i have a lot of experience with it. At my current job i implement this kind of technologies in Portuguese companies from 3 to 50 users inside the platform.

The main point of why should i be selected it’s because I’m not only a tech guy that likes to implement this things but also a Marketing and Sales expert, i have a degree in Communication and a master degree in Marketing Management.

I have always loved to code and develop my own app's, so that’s why I’ve entered in this kind of work and started by implementing CRM's and after that i was already doing some API Connections (PHP or Nodejs) with other platforms.

I've worked with a lot of tools, for exemple: Zoho One (been working daily with all the suite, CRM, SalesIQ, Forms, Campaings, etc), Salesforce (I’m a certified admin), Dynamics 365, Hubspot (certified specialist), Ontraport, Keap, Mailchimp, etc...

    1. 1

Impressive! Blog or website I can follow?

      1. 1

Thats a thing i thougth about doing in the past :P I know a lot of CRM, Automation, Mail, Forms etc.
I thougt about creating a blog where i could put my ideas and my thoughts about this apps and for what market they would be a good choice... maybe i'll rethink that in the next days :)

        1. 1

It would be really helpful! It's a rare skill!

Hi y'all! I just discovered this community yesterday, and I'm already thinking it's exactly what I've been looking for without realizing it.
I'm a little worried that I don't have any "big ideas", so my intention for 2021 is to sort that out.
I'm also a firm believer in taking extremely small first steps to get started, so I'm setting a goal to earn $100 outside of my fulltime job, and we'll see what comes next.
Wish me luck, and happy 2021 to y'all!

Hi guys, amazing to be part of this community.

I have been listening to the podcast for quite a while.

I am a front end architect working with a variety of skillet (both front end and backend) for the last 8 years.

I have spent the last couple of years focusing on Vue js (I am the host of vuemeetup.com), and tailored my expertise in supporting apprentices and junior dev in progressing in their career.

I had a few business ventures in the last years but nothing huge, and I have a business and economic degree that has massively helped me in many occasion, and give me that extra help when setting up new company or making new sales.

I will be looking around for people that have good ideas and need a partner and maybe some money to help them take it further.

If anyone wants to ever have a chat, please feel free to contact me

Hi! I was looking for a community like this for ages! So excited to be here! I'm based in Berlin, Germany. I have different ideas and engineering background and what I think I need the most is co-founder(s).
What way is better to start for someone with multiple ideas: read posts of others looking for co-founders, or post your own ideas first?

    Hello Rosie,
It feels great to join just a unique community!
I am involved in the investment migration industry and I assist individuals and their families to obtain residency or citizenship across the world. I am developing this business to be more accessible to digital nomads and there are a number tax residency programs that good save nomads thousands. I can provide in this regard, while I myself require advice/assistance from the tech savvy so that I can build some nice interactive tools for my website.
    David 😊

Hi @rosiesherry I'm here to learn and get inspired from other founders, and in the process turn my idea into a reality soon. I have experience in the higher education and digital marketing domain, and I hope to couple them to make something useful.

Hey Rosie, I'm here like anyone else - to learn from likeminded business leaders keen to continue to push the boundaries of our own (and collective) limitations.

At 50 and in this strange time were life has been pushed indoors, I have found myself thinking home based business and web design. I have the life experience for the business aspect, but not being computer savvy I'm finding the computer stuff difficult. So I guess I've come here for possible future advice.

I am e-commerce developer and I develop my own e-commerce website to sell goods now. I don't need clients from there.
I look forward to chatting with dropshippers / anyone who is interested in e-commerce.
