Welcome, introduce yourself! (Week of Jan 24th)

Rosie here -- the Indie Hackers community manager. Welcome! ๐Ÿ‘‹

This short guide is meant to help you get the most out of Indie Hackers.

First, introduce yourself!

Indie Hackers is a community of people helping each other build profitable businesses and side projects. The key word here is "community." Don't be shy!

For starters, take a second to introduce yourself and share your goals in the comments below. ๐Ÿ‘‡

Just say a few words about who you are, why you're here, and what you hope to accomplish or learn.

Take a moment to say hello to someone else as well!

Dive into learning.

We've interviewed hundreds of successful indie hackers. I recommend reading a few of their stories. It's a great way to get an overview of what's possible.

If you prefer audio to reading, check out the Indie Hackers Podcast Network and find a show you like.

Now is the best time to start.

There's no time like the present. Check out the "Start Here" page for a list of practical steps and articles that can help you take action.

Not only will it help you get started, but it should also introduce you to some of the best parts of the Indie Hackers community.

Good luck!

This is just the tip of the iceberg. If you're ever feeling lost or confused, post a question in the Meta group, or tag me (@rosiesherry) in any comment or post.

Don't forget to introduce yourself and say hi to someone else below! ๐Ÿค—

Hi @rosiesherry (and everyone else) I'm Dorothy and I am working at a startup called Tuple that makes pair programming software. Check us out here: https://tuple.app/

    Great to be here!

    1. 2

I really like the insights feature!

    2. 1

@dotoperator what a crazy coincidence! I just signed up for indie hackers and saw that you work for Tuple. I just got done having an email conversation with Adam Zais (head of Tuple sales) a couple hours ago. Love your product, by the way!

    3. 1

Hi Dorothy! Really great work you got there, I think I'll try it out as soon as I have the opportunity :)

    4. 1

that's a great demo video - this is interesting.
      going to try it out

Hi, I'm Fraser and I've been a solopreneur (coder) for 39 years.

I write web applications and I also tweet about productivity, coding as a business, and the challenges of a life-long solopreneur. I am aspiring to add videos as well.

I enjoy mentoring and coaching those who are coders themselves and those who want to be productive without being trapped in the tools.

I'm looking forward to helping out and learning in this interesting community!

    Hey Rosie and everyone,

I'm Lisa, a startup geek from London.

Having worked with many founders and students, I've realised that most of them have the same questions, challenges, frustrations with the process. One way to help them is coaching - which I do in my daily job. But shouldn't there be another way?

This question prompted me to think of all sorts of ways to help more people trying to start up in a more streamlined digital way. I've started playing with an idea of some sort of a Founders FAQ first, which grew into a first iteration of our startup skills platform.

My first tool is a Validation Toolkit on Miro - https://miro.com/app/board/o9J_lbM2QOw=/ - that I am hoping will help many people validate their ideas faster!

Really excited to be part of this community! Would love to help anyone validate their ideas and looking forward to learning from all of you myself!

    1. 1

Hi Lisa, as someone who just found out about this community and want to develop my own idea, I would love to connect with you and be your guinea pig :)

      1. 1

Hi! This would be great! Tell me a bit about your idea!

Have you ever validated any business ideas before?

    2. 1

Hi Lisa, I guess half of the guys here are your potential clients, struggling to start a startup facing the same issues ;)

      1. 2

        Hi Grigori!

I am indeed finding some people who would use the toolkit here but so far not too many.

Also - this is a free product, so not sure if there a lot of "clients" here per se. I am more interested in feedback and supporting people going through the process at this stage!

Are you working on any ideas at the moment?

        1. 1

Yes. I have my personal planning tool which I failed to release to mass-market, but I liked it so much since then, that believe I have to give it another try. Now I'm working on a questionary to collect data about user preferences from those who is using different tools and depending on it will see in which part of my planner to invest my time first.

          1. 1

Sounds interesting! Have you considered interviews instead of questionnaires? These tend to be much more insightful at an early stage.

            1. 1

Although I know about interviews, I have 0 experience in it, and questionary is something I can have much bigger coverage with, so I decided to start with it

              1. 1

The question here is whether you want quantity or quality. Doing Customer Development at the early stages, you are probably after depth. 5-10 interviews are usually much more insightful and helpful than 100 survey responses.

I work a lot with people who've not interviewed before, so I understand the hesitation but would really recommend to try as it's the best way to understand your potential users. I've written up a quick read on the topic here. Maybe this makes a better case?

                1. 1

"Why surveys are a bad idea" - it starts like something I definitely have to read :). Will read and come back with questions/ideas/feedback if you don't mind

    Hi Rosie and everyone :)

I'm Julien, I live in France and I found Indie Hacker through a "marketing digital" training.

I develop Android apps on my free times for ~7 years, and my most downloaded app is closed to 50k downloads (it's a score marker for petanque match with statistics feature, you can see it here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.julienollivier.scorespetanque)

I'm currently working on a 2D Android game (a turn-by-turn fantasy racing game) and I hope to find here opinion, advice or, why not, partner (especially for graphics part ^^)

Of course, if I can help other members of IH, I will do it with pleasure !

  5. 4

    Hi,
I'm Ryan. My friends introduced me to Indiehacker since then I've been reading some posts passively until this week I officially create my account.
Long story short, 2020 was a rough time for me, my full time job didn't pay my 4 month salary after that I joined a project that paid 1.5 month late with less money from what it supposed to be.
Then I said to myself "I think it's enough for me relying on other people (fulltime job) money to live" and I remembered I had some ideas in my head during my fulltime job period but never really execute it.

At the end of 2020, I decided I'll focus build my own thing.
This will be my first journey in Indiehacker

    It's now or never

Stories are entertaining, but the most important part of them is that they are informative. That's why I'm here.

  7. 3

You are right - incredible character training!!

    Hi Rosie and everyone!

I'm Cam, a developer from Canada. I've been freelancing for years, but I've come to feel that my biggest weakness in freelancing has been lack of community. That's why I'm here, to learn from and help others, and keep up with the cutting edge of web technologies. Maybe even find a collab or three? Great to be here!

    1. 2

Hi Cam! I agree with you 100%. That's why I'm here too - on all of your points.

  14. 2

Hello! I'm Alexander, working on a decentralized Patreon called Creaton.
I want to learn more about building community and writing so that's why I joined indie hackers!

  15. 2

Hi there! I'm Aaron and I'm currently working on an interesting side project called Last Video at https://last.video that makes it super easy to feature your latest YouTube video and receive realtime notifications when your channel goes live. Glad to be part of the community!

    Hi people!

I am Lily. I'm currently working as a freelance developer with a background in biochemistry.
I am here to learn from the best and start building things that bring value and solutions around me, yet I am still on the brainstorming stage ๐Ÿฃ.

I also run https://www.digital-codon.tech/ a blog where we discuss all things bio and tech and that I'm working on improving.

Looking forward to here from y'all.

Hi everyone! I'm Maxim, and I'm working in authentication and access management field.
I'm an Open Source Software enthusiast and a member of Open Identity Platform community on GitHub.
Feel free to ask me anything about authentication and access management!

    1. 2

Hi there Maxim! Curious to know what inspired you to get into the Auth & Access Mgmt. space?

      1. 2

Hi, @seemcat, interesting question! I've just found it much more interesting than developing typical CRUD applications. Auth and access management includes many interesting areas: implement complex authentication processes interacting with many data sources and databases, Machine Learning for fraud detection, blockchain for decentralized identity management, biometrics, and many others.

And what about you, what brought you into the space?

        1. 2

Haha yeah, that's so true! I've always been a fan of crypto and blockchain, so hearing about Self-Sovereign Identity / blockchain for decentralized identity management blew my mind. It's the one topic I'm heavily researching on my down time right now. Great to meet a fellow Indie Hacker who's interested in the same field! ๐Ÿค“

  21. 2

I everyone, I'm JB and I found Indiehackers while searching for tools to help bootstrapping our multiple Saas ideas. With a background of solo-developer I'm not that much community-oriented, but my partner who is not a dev led me there, where I found great insights. Hopefully will have chances in a near future to exchange with some folks here!

  22. 2

    Hello Rosie,
My name is Oras and I have joined IH 3 years ago. This week I have finished my product Job Description AI.
My goal is to build products that saves time and improve productivity and Job Description AI is just the beginning for me.

Why I am here? To learn and share my journey.

My goals? Build at least 4 products this year and write blogs about the progress. I already wrote my first one 10 things I learned about GPT-3 while building my first product

How I am going to reach this goal? By iterating on learning from each project and connecting with fellow indie hackers.

Expectations? It is a long journey and there will be lots of learning. For example, yesterday I shared my product in Show HN and only received 1 upvote! Today I am launching on Product Hunt and will see what will happen. I'm hoping this learning curve will help in next products.

    1. 2

Great product! I'm also going to build something soon with GPT-3 since I got access too. Good luck, I'm curious to see it grow.

      1. 1

Thanks @WwoeSsi and good luck for your product. Please reach out if you need any help.

  29. 1

  33. 1

Hello @rosiesherry and fellow Indie Hackers! My name is Dan and I am a software engineer based in NYC. I have a strong background in software development, particularly in web and mobile development and building high scale distributed systems. I am beginning to get involved in the startup way of life and have been working on a side project for four years now. I recently built a service that was meant to support my business and decided to make it into a stand alone product - Time Trigger (https://timetrigger.dev) Hope everyone can check it out and I look forward to getting to know everyone!

Apart from that, I'm a freelance fullstack web developer, father of two daughters, lover of cider and crรชpes.

    Hey everybody,
I am a software developer in a big corporation in the medical engineering field, but doing a lot of programming and tinkering in my free time.

Starting 2021 I set myself some goals. Getting fitter, to have an app in the App Store by the end of 2021 to learn more about the whole process and starting to find a passion project on the side.

Sometimes things move really fast. One month in, I published my first app, which helps me keep my health goal in sight: http://yearlygoal.link

Its not much, but was a great start to get to know the process for publishing applications.

  36. 1

I'm about to post my startup website. In the not so unsurprizing category of things. https://www.lolsolved.gg

I've got the beginnings of a great product but I need some help in how to actually get it out there. I'm going to make a full post in a sec.

  37. 1

I am also working on SAAS ideas on the side, even if my priority is to make some money with my agency.

My goal is to think, market and launch a Saas product as soon as my agency bring me enough revenue to survive. Hopefully soon lol

I have a couple of ideas to help work coordination and organisation in web agencies, and i'm currently learning a lot on saas and indie hacking in general. This website is truly a great ressource !

  39. 1

    Hi @rosiesherry and everyone else!

My name is Aaron, and I'm a startup founder working on an online game for hackers called Exoproxy. I've been in cyber security for over a decade, and I've had 2 other startups before this. My background is also in software engineering and computer networking, so I'm fortunate in that I can build everything myself. I'm currently working full-time, with a wife and 2 kids, so I'm up every day at 5 am to put in the work, and I'm absolutely loving it!

I've been listening to the Indie Hackers podcast every night while I take my dog for a walk, and I've been just devouring the lessons from other founders. I'm hoping to dig in a little deeper here and actually interact with other founders on the forum.

I look forward to interacting with everyone else here!

    Hi INDIEHACKERS community!
    This is Chenchu.

I am a fellow who loves chasing and exploring the universe in my own way...

Currently I am building a Start-up called, Garage Buddies. Garage Buddies is a platform where people can come and get their things repaired, something like a Doorstep Repair Service.

And besides Garage Buddies, i also started my own Design and Marketing Agency called Chenchu Media, where I am helping businesses owners grow their Brand, Influence, and Business together..

And I love to read a lot, and play a lot.

This is me in a nutshell!

  44. 1

How many people get to this point and don't introduce themselves I wonder? How many sit a their keyboards and decide that they don't have anything of value to add by saying 'Hi! I'm here."

How many read the posts of others and think, "I'm not as exciting/valuable/competent/accomplished/(insert doubt here). Do I even belong in this space?"

Not a sales pitch! I just thought I'd voice my own doubts in the recognition that I'm probably not alone.

    Anyway @everyone, hello, I'm here!

I'm working full time at the moment because it pays the bills. I have so many ideas for side hustles but struggle to find the time or energy to do the 10,000 things you need to do to put something out there. I struggle to know where to begin or how to break it all apart into manageable chunks. Regardless, I have to succeed with this over the next decade. So I'm here, hoping to emulate and learn, and to give where I can.

Notion brought me here (waves to the Notion nerds).

  45. 1

    Hey there!

Excited to be a part of this amazing community!

  47. 1

    Hi all.

I'm Wijnand. I joined IH 2 years ago but wasn't really active. Now I'm going to make it my main online social medium. I studied artificial intelligence in the Netherlands, then taught myself to build apps and I'm ยฑ6 apps further now - not having made much profit on them. I quit my job this month and the coming two years (I saved enough for that) I am planning to make many products (and go for one if it proves viable):

    • FriendTime.co - become a better friend
    • BackpackingTribe.com - free, flexible group trips for backpackers
    • MasterCrimeZ.com - Text-Based Mafia MMORPG
    • Matrix (tba) - 2D Artificial Life Simulation for AGI Research
    • Something with GPT3 (Yay, I have access! :) )

And quite a few more things I have in mind.
Since I have so many ideas, my strategy is going to be to spend ยฑ1 month on every product trying to see if it's viable or not. If it is, continue, if not, go to the next one.

Very nice to meet you all!

  48. 1

Hi, I'm Chris and I've been a long time lurker that has finally decided to sign up ๐Ÿ˜›

I've worked as a developer for start-ups for almost all of my 11-year career, and all the while have dabbled in the idea of side-hustles. I'm currently the sole developer at my company (https://www.spaceback.com), so I'm especially interested in how to scale my time and our platform as we grow. I'm also generally looking to network with other solo-developers to share tips/stories.

I also have an embarrassingly thorough knowledge of ad tech, which I'm always happy to share.

Hey @rosiesherry and everyone, I'm Shem I'm a software engineer and in the past ~15 years I worked in plenty of startups and big companies.
In the past year or so I've been working on a little side project to help me and my friends. I'm fanatic about productivity and learning and always looked for ways to learn better and more efficiently. I found that I'm not the kind of guy that takes online courses or classes, I'm just too busy and I found those too high level without giving me practical tools.
Instead, I prefer to gather a lot of small but good materials (blogs, videos, podcasts, etc.) from around the net and spend ~20 minutes each day going over those. I managed to do so in the past 5 years and I saw how greatly it affects my professional career.
But I found this is a very hard process for me to maintain and also saw how hard it is for my friends to start.
That's why I build 1%Growth, and we tackle it from 2 aspects:

    1. Gather the best and the most relevant content from around the net - there're many (many many) content out there, and your time is limited, we'll curate the right content for you
    2. Make it a habit- there're plenty of newsletters and stuff like this out there, it worth nothing if we just give you the content by helping you consume it. We want to help you to consume the content, at your own pace, with all kinds of strategies.

We're currently operating in beta mode with ~100 users, you can check it out here and we'll add you to the beta: https://www.1percentgrowth.app/

Hi everyone! I am Neil and I have been in the marketing and front end dev side of the industry since 2000. I have always built things for other people and thought why not build for myself. Stumbled on this community via twitter. Excited to be a part of it!

Whattup yall! Once I learned maths I felt I could drive into coding. Checking the job posts I became overwhelmed by the huge number of different skills it's been asked. So I realized it would be better start working by myself with the skills I've already learned, while I continue my studies, then to struggle to be a match for jobs postings. I'm just in the beginning, but indiehackers.com has been a source of inspiration. Good luck to all!

    Hey everyone and @rosiesherry,

My name is Stefano Selorio. I am a founder and CEO of Carevocacy, a son, a brother, an undergrad student, and a caregiver to my grandma.

That's how it all started. I saw that we needed to create better solutions for our caregivers.

Carevocacy is a startup focused on bringing our seniors into the age of tech.

We do this through individual or group sessions that teach technology topics. Our seniors learn new skills, stay social, and stay connected.

Due to the pandemic, we had to pivot to online sessions, which caused seniors' issues in general.

We've served over 100+ older adults online who have felt a sense of companionship through our programs during the pandemic.

I am so proud of what we've been able to do these past few months and I can't wait to do more work with our aging population. I am here to listen and create solutions. Can't wait to talk :)

    Hi @rosiesherry and IndieHackers!

I'm Derek. I left my job as a product manager at a large tech company last month to lead growth at an early-stage startup called Arctype that creates a tool for collaborative data analysis (https://arctype.com). This is my first time being responsible for growth metrics (DAU, retention, etc), and I feel like there's so much I don't know. ๐Ÿ˜ฌ

I'm looking forward to meeting more people in the community and learning from their experiences! (and hopefully also share some actionable learnings from my own successes/failures as I go)

Hi IndieHackers community. My name's Eduard, and I am the founder of a branding studio dealing with - well you guessed it - all things branding, from strategy to brand design.

Our name is Studio Defalt. Why 'Defalt', you might ask? We see our name as an extension of our mission - going the extra mile for our clients by default.

Right now we have entrusted our developer partners with the finishing touches of our website, and I am excited to start sharing here soon the journey that I've been through creating my own company's strategy & identity. I've come to find out that, as a brand designer, working for yourself is the most difficult type of project.

Other than that, I enjoy educating entrepreneurs about the value and structure of branding. Most brand builders keep this type of information close to their chest, like it's some sort of industry secret that only they should have access to. I, however, believe that apart from being lifelong learners, we should also be lifelong teachers, so if you have any question whatsoever about branding (be it strategy or design), drop me a message anytime. I'd love nothing more than to help other passionate people, or simply just have an engaging discussion.

Thank you all for having me here, and I am really looking forward to meeting and learning from you guys! It's great to be here.

Went from mid developer to discipline-lead being responsible now for compensations and WFP... but asking myself whether this is what I want to keep doing for the next X years, my answer was - No.
I have several personal projects and none of them brings money. Mostly I did them to gain experience and it happened. Now I'd like to get to the next level - high quality product with users, marketing and purchases.

Hi all, just learned about this site through an early incubator program called, Day One. I'm Jess. I'm working on a new type of dating solution that uses introductions and personal connections to help everyone find love. I've done some product market fit, lots of interviews, but now trying to figure out what's my baseline MVP to see if my hypothesis is correct or not. If anyone interested in participating in a focus group, or curious what's my concept, please check out www.klouf.com. Look forward to learning from you all! cheers

Hi, I'm BKay, a data analyst with the goal of becoming a data scientist. I'm from Nairobi, Kenya. I founded a startup in campus with my 2 friends, and since seed money became a problem we eventually split. I believe in Entrepreneurship and it's potential to make huge changes in an individual and society. Since we solely depended on one person to do the development of our app, I decided to learn coding, that will enable me to bring my creative ideas to live. I've started learning Python. I love spoken word poetry and I do some pieces too. With data and Entrepreneurship, my purpose is to make my corner and circle a better place. Thank you for this community.

    1. 1

Hey Bkay, That's awesome that you decided to learn how to code. I'm also trying to start an app type business (klouf.com), but I'm not super technical. I considered if I should try to learn, but decided my time is better spent on the parts of business development/idea generation that I'm actually good at....but I really admire you going for it! Cheers from Denver, Colorado.

    Hi Rosie,

I'm David Koontz from Dallas TX - just launched my first iOS App and looking for advice.

I'm enjoying learning Swift & developing in the Apple eco-system. I've started a blog on my new exploits TheSwiftDojo.com and I'm learning TDD on my next project - a Baseball scoring app. We are live streaming the coding and testing of the Baseball App https://www.twitch.tv/leadingagile and the code is on my GitHub https://github.com/davidakoontz/Baseball-TDD.Academy if anyone would like to follow along or help out.

I'm wondering if it would pay off to use Apple Search Ads in the App Store for my existing App :

InspireMe! Cards - Real Advice for Agilists
    https://apps.apple.com/us/app/inspireme-cards/id1527932080

It is a nitch market so I'm not sure the general purpose Ads would help drive sales, and don't know how much targeting one can do with the toolset... any advice?

HI all ! this is Gsus!
I've been working 10 years in a 9-5 job.. and honestly its been great! I was lucky to be part of a very openminded and awesome team.. This company is not tech related...
My contribution always revolve in projects aiming to create products, new teams, sales strategies, etc... so I consider my self an inventor.. Starting projects.. conceptualize them and test them its a joy (i feel like playing!)
I have no tech background. I just started coding... I'm learning python and django and im blown away! its like Why did took me so long to start learning this?
I feel that as an "inventor", learning to code, and make things work is a magical thing... its just amazing.
I hope to connect with you guys and build some cool stuff!
Now I'm working in a logistics control tower to let users track & trace their shipments and collaborate online..
This industry is hyper fragmented, so my goal is to unify.. bring together parties, process and people so the 9-5workers in logistics can go home on time to enjoy life!
I'm looking ways to extract data from PDF's, connect to ocean carriers track & trace systems and build a user model where users can check their shipments, post comments, load files, etc...
If you feel connected to this , please reach me !

Hi - fellowship! I am straight out of school and passionate about all things techy - specifically programming. However I am at the bottom of the ladder on my first rung and joined Indiehackers to learn off others and contribute where I can. I also play the piano, guitar and from this Christmas teaching myself to play the drums - therefore I would like to develop a program to help others play music that's not necessarily by learning how to read sheet music.

Hi, everyone. My name is Bobby Shiffler and I live with my wife and 7 kids in Charlottesville, Virginia, USA. I founded and still run a small Amazon-focused digital sales agency. We help food and beverage brands get more sales on Amazon.

My goal over the next 60 days is to launch a business intelligence SaaS app for our current clients (15 or so) and use them as a testing ground to then launch it to other brands and Amazon sellers (who are not our clients).

We currently have some client dashboards running on Google Data Studio and will be using that UI as the MVP for the web app.

Excited to get started and help others where I can.

We are looking forward to add enthusiastic and entrepreneurial technical developers who have a flair for startup growth. As a team of spirited entrepreneurs we have had a lot of adventures and fun growing to the stage we are at right now and would love to make our unified goal come true with the brilliant minds in this community.

Hello! I'm Yuri, a software engineer from Brazil. I'm currently quitting my job because I don't feel challenged anymore and I see making startups in the indie way as a great opportunity for personal and professional growth. This change is towards freeing myself from stagnation and living a more exciting life.

I'm reading Pieter Levels' book and I wish to find here more detailed information about the indie maker reality as I intend to start shipping my own products and keep working on them full time until I find a new job.

Hi everyone! I've been following Indie hackers for years.... yet today's the day that I decide to introduce myself, as I feel lonely in this journey of creating a side business on my own! At the moment, I'm hustling to get my ad strategy optimized for a dropshipping ecommerce site in the pet accessories niche. So, more than anything I want to learn as much as possible from the community, find motivation, and meet new people that share similar projects or that want to become independent in their work lives. Happy to be here!

Hi everyone and @rosiesherry! I am a recent college graduate. Most people with my degree (engineering) go on to get a stable job at a big tech company...although everyone is encouraging me to do that, I am much more interested in inventing my own products. I am very glad to be with likeminded people here and I will definitely be posting progress on projects here!

Hi, my name is Jo, I'm having a little trouble defining what I do, I graduated as a graphic designer, I worked in the web industry for a few years and then founded a software development cooperative. Until recently, I was a co-shareholder in a SaaS-style recruitment startup, I realized it was going nowhere, so I quit. Anyway, I spent the last ten years as an entrepreneur, I didn't win the jackpot but I learned a lot. I am now looking for a new solo adventure. I hope to find inspiring people/content in this community. Peace!

Hi, I'm a student from Europe, I learned mathematics, development, finance and marketing so far. I worked both in startups and corporate environment (only finance/marketing). I don't have work experience as a developer, only 2 years of academic education, so it would be great to change this in the near future.
I tried some things on my own aswell, currently looking for great projects to be part of. I touched so many topics, I'm not sure which path or "career" for me so I hope I can broaden my vision and perception here and specialize in something.

In 2021 I want to learn so much more and try out myself in freelancing.

Feel free to write me anytime if you have some interesting topics or projects to discuss or just want to chat with somebody!:)

    Have a nice day,
