Welcome, introduce yourself! (Week of Jun 21st)

Rosie here -- the Indie Hackers community manager. Welcome! 👋

This short guide is meant to help you get the most out of Indie Hackers.

First, introduce yourself!

Indie Hackers is a community of people helping each other build profitable businesses and side projects. The key word here is "community." Don't be shy!

For starters, take a second to introduce yourself and share your goals in the comments below. 👇

Just say a few words about who you are, why you're here, and what you hope to accomplish or learn in 2020.

Take a moment to say hello to someone else as well!

Dive into learning.

We've interviewed hundreds of successful indie hackers. I recommend reading a few of their stories. It's a great way to get an overview of what's possible.

@csallen also puts out podcast episodes if reading isn't your thing!

Next, get started!

There's no time like the present. Check out the "Start Here" page for a list of practical steps and articles that can help you take action.

Not only will it help you get started, but it should also introduce you to some of the best parts of the Indie Hackers community.

This is just the tip of the iceberg! If you're ever feeling lost or confused, post in the Meta group or tag me (@rosiesherry) in any comment or post.

Don't forget to introduce yourself and say hi to someone else below! 🤗

Hi, I'm Vlad, a mobile app dev based in Bucharest, Romania. I'm trying to find my way through the founder route and I think this community will help me a lot.

Have tried a couple of side projects before, but with the strategy of build it first and figure out who my customers are later... Usually gave up after a few months, after realizing either that nobody cares about my product or that I don't really want to work with the people in my target audience.

Trying to do this a bit differently this time, research about what other successful founders have done.

I'm still at the finding ideas phase, and my goal is to have a validated idea(where customers have confirmed they would pay money for the product) in the next 3 months.

    Hi,
I'm a Physics bachelor and developer.
I currently find myself in a dead end in life after dropping out of grad school and I'm not really sure what I'm doing here. I've just come across this website while doing some research on machine learning and trading bots.
I've got some ideas but I'm not sure how to put everything together, and I hope to find some answers and eventually be of some use to someone else.

    1. 2

Fellow physics graduate, understanding your plight. Stay strong!

    My name is Nick.

I recently just launched a new service that allows you to track your competitors' ads across 10 different channels. We deliver a concise deck at the end of each month detailing all of their ad activity for you to see and strategize on - gaining a leg up on the competition.

Happy to be here to learn, grow and contribute to this amazing community that I've watched from the sideline for some time now!

    1. 1

Sounds interesting. Is it focuses on a specific industry?

    Hi all,
I'm Rosalie. I've been home/mobile educating my children for several years now and became frustrated that I couldn't find a program that I liked to track my children's education as well as find educational games that my children would actually want to play for more than a week.

Combining all that I was looking for, my children and I came up with the concept for VARWEE as cloud based mobile educational platform that provides micro-learning, micro-testing, and micro-application through an app by app process in a self directed RPG adventure game. Its purpose is to create a Virtual And Real World Educational Experience that enhances the learning process while ensuring that the player is meeting or exceeding global educational standards.

I'm here because this is going to take a lot of coding, a great team, and building a community to accomplish this and I need to learn how to be a good founder of a tech company. I'm currently participating in the Yen.camp to build my communication skills with programmers and build content for the home/mobile educational community.

Our focus for the next 90 days is: 1- creating the prototype of the record keeping app,
    2-building the VARWEE community

    1. 1

Well done Rosalie. Necessity is the mother of all innovations. Welcome to the community.

  23. 2

I'm Steve, and I've been in the tech industry professionally for well over a decade. Over the years, I've created lots of side projects that went nowhere. I have a ton of experience that maybe I could use to help others here. Maybe this year will be my lucky year when a project I create sticks. ;)

Hello! My name is Michael Timmons, I am a mechanical engineer, working as a Building Automation Systems Project Engineer. I am 28 years old, living in Canada with my wife and our two sons.

In 2015 I started a brand, where we would raise awareness about the rising costs of putting kids in organized sports, most specifically hockey and the importance of staying active and healthy. I basically started this brand because I just got out of university and couldn't land a job so I started it out of need. I didn't have much money growing up and my parents struggled at times to put me into sports such as hockey, basketball and soccer. I was lucky that my grandparents were able to help support. Sports have always been a passion of mine, and I have coached local hockey teams but took the last hockey season off to spend more time with my growing family.

For the brand, I sold t-shirts, hoodies and even at one point hockey gear on the website. I held facebook draws to win tickets and swag to hockey games in my area to promote my brand. I knew a couple of hockey players that played a couple games in the NHL and played in the AHL so I reached out to them and sent them some free swag, hoping for social media promotion, but never got it. Hindsight I never TRULY followed up with them or asked them to promote or their opinion, so probably my fault.

People loved the logo and I did get a few sales but mostly from friends and family. I gave away some clothing as advertisement but never really got it off the ground. I also sponsored local events that supported kids in sport or Make A Wish campaigns to raise money for sick children.

I had some things in my life happen and honestly I kinda let the brand die about two years ago, not that it was big or anything. I built the website myself using Wordpress, WooCommerce, a paid theme and looking up tutorials online. I learned so much about starting a business and it helped me come out of my shell, because I did everything. I contacted suppliers, t-shirt printing companies, and put myself out there on social media.

In terms of skills, I don't have a lot of hard skills in terms of coding, programming or development but I am actively expanding my knowledge and skills in those areas.

For soft skills, I am very personable and a great leader. All those years playing sports, I have developed social aptitude and leadership/team player skills. One thing a lot of people have told me through interviews for employment, through performance reviews and from what my friends and family say, is that I am very likable, a hard worker and a solutions provider who can think outside the box. I seem to have a good business sense, as in, I have trusted my gut in a few risky situations and have been way more successful than not.

My interests are all over the place, I am into everything from entrepreneurship, cars and motorcycles, building PCs, smart home automation, games and the gaming industry, woodworking and writing.

Right now, I am looking for my next adventure. I have grown a lot since my previous brand and feel like I am in a good place right now where life has settled down from getting married, buying a house, having two kids and on a good path in my career as an engineer.

If you are interested in reaching out and networking, or collaborating that would be great! Sorry for the long post but once I started typing I couldn't stop! Cheers!

    1. 2

Hey there, enjoyed your post. I had the same sentiments, growing up without much and not having a lot of Money for team sports. I did end up playing team sports throughout my childhood / highschool and it really had a positive influence on me.

Always thought it would be great to have a non profit that has funds available for this need. Anyway, following you and good luck on your journey!

Anyone else struggle with this and have they found anything that has helped them with solving that?

I'm TC. I currently run Yonah - we design, build and test autonomous aerial cargo transport system. It is my first startup and boy is it a hard one for a first startup. Been at it for a few years now.

I used to work at a company that was really good at making software defined underwater acoustic modems. Before that, I built underwater autonomous systems for competition.

Caught a small glimpse of something written here when looking into algo trading & reinforcement learning - so I decided to sign up and check it out.

Long time reader, but finally decided to make an account to share some of my journey with y'all. It's such a great community spirit here, and I think the reason for it is... entrepreneurship is HARD! Friends and family think we're insane for leaving well paid careers to bet it all on our dreams. But we all know, deep down that this is our calling. That's why it's so good to surround yourself with positive and likeminded people.

If anyone is ever in a rut, please DM me and we can encourage each other. I would love to hear more about your personal journeys.

I’ve been self employed for 15 years. I run a web hosting company, railsplayground.com and a source code hosting company, sourcerepo.com. I also have a freelance web development business.

I’m looking forward to being a member of this community!

Hi, I'm Rama, currently about to finish college and building an MVP that i hope will democratize AI by making it super easy to implement and use simple and common APIs for all Deep Learning algorithms. Would love to learn how to get initial users. Hopefully someone here will be interested in becoming capable of using several of the latest state-of-the-art Deep Neural Networks without needing strong knowledge in AI!

Hi, just found this website and I'm hoping it can help me make decisions as I build and grow my SaaS.

So here's my first question: does a SaaS need a CRM? My SaaS will be in the SEO niche, and is being built to help bloggers and content writers/ agencies (who consider SEO to generate traffic) create and improve SEO content faster (I'm aware I'm being a little bit vague for now ;) ). The SaaS will be in the lower price range.

I look forward to your thoughts/ experience!

    Thanks

    Hello Indie's,

2020's been quite a whirlwind for all of us, myself included. The physical, mental & emotional toll the pandemic has taken on all of us is unlike any other.

Keeping that in mind plus learning about the importance of wellbeing in general, I am in the middle of kickstarting a wellness start-up focused on mental/emotional health. I've been through the first few feedback rounds with some family & friends and that was my first "core-validation". I'd like to engage with this amazing community and learn as well as share my journey with the rest of y'all. Thanks!

Hi, I'm Pandu and currently work as a Head of Product in a startup here in Indonesia. I studied Computer Science in college, and loved building products and services ever since. I had an experience in setting up and leading a governmental digital innovation unit, and since then is dreaming to start my own business/organization. I'm really inspired with all the stories here at IH, and hope that I can contribute a lot too.

I am also passionate in community building and now re-learning to code in my spare time. In IH, I would love to network, help people, learn new skill, and maybe someday in the not-so-long future, start a business after mustering up my courage to do so.

Let me know if I can help with any product/tech/business thing. Might not be a big help, but I guarantee a fun discussion. :D

After some intense research, I am trying to start a blog about helping people to make money online, but the first step for now is focusing on getting a few consulting job that helps business on establishing their business on the internet, in order to fund for the future of the blog.

Feeling a lot of anxiety, a lot of doubt, I guess this is part of the game!

    Wish me luck!!

Hi I'm Jamie, an Italian marketer, I've been in digital for more than 7 years, in this period I created a bikini brand (+12kprof) then closed, created a store with the dropshipping model (+100k Revenue - 10/20% profit divided 2 with partner), worked as a freelancer and acquired skills in the T model almost complete (I miss all the programming or developing part)

    Why am I here?

Because despite the many skills, the business launched,
I've always gone to break even or profit but I've never "succeeded" in the sense of having a gain that allows me to close my current job and focus only on online business.

What I have learned is that there is NO such thing as overnight success and no matter how many skills you have, those are not the "secret" to success.

I hope to help and be helped.

    Jamie

  155. 1

Hey all! I'm a weird indie hacker I guess. I'm a designer (product, ux, etc). I've done all sorts of little side projects that I've sold for small outcomes (Jobby and Cubeduel if you want to Google them). I started RescueTime ( an '08 YC company- we raised a modest Series A and it kept growing, albeit slowly). And I started Glowforge - a desktop laser cutter that had the largest 30-day crowdfunding campaign in history. Recently, after 11 years, I came back to be CEO of RescueTime...

While it's still technically venture-backed, it's a modest all-remote company that serves a small-but-happy market. I came back for a variety of reasons-- my co-founder (who had been running it) had died of cancer and it needed someone to steer the ship. My wife had died a year and a half earlier and it kind of made me re-examine how I wanted to spend my life.

Now our small-but-enthusiastic team is trying to figure out where to take the company next (we've got some ideas I'm super jazzed about). Anyhow, I'm glad to find this community!

  156. 1

Hi! I'm Ash. By day I lead content at Buffer (https://buffer.com/) and I've just started to build my own site — https://www.livingcozy.com/ — a place to discover modern homeware brands. I'm keen to build-up the audience and newsletter subscribers and at the moment I'm focused on SEO and content creation.

    1. 1

Hi Ash, I've just joined here, and saw your post.

I visited Living Cozy - it looks beautiful, and I like that you're featuring black-owned businesses. Is there scope for including a section on attractive elements for a home office?

With so many of us now working from home, I think we need to start thinking more about how we accommodate a home office setup, and ensuring that it fits within a domestic setting.

I've just launched Art for Entrepreneurs - original artwork and inspirational posters for anyone building a business. Would you consider including this in your product range? You can see more on my site: jeremiahkrage.com

PS also a big fan of Buffer!

    NetNut team here :)
So glad to be a part of this community.
NetNut is providing residential proxies with direct ISP connectivity, which means that no P2P network is utilized and dependency on end-users' devices, making our proxies MUCH faster, anonymous, and never blocked! (not to mention more ethical than the "standard" today 😉)

Looking forward to contributing and gaining value from this awesome community!

Hey! I'm an Irish full-stack javascript dev living in Portugal and just quit my corporate job out of dissatisfaction. I'm hoping to make a living out of mobile app development by making many simple apps for specific industries. The first app I'm making is a sex app for couples and the second will likely be a mindfulness app. While these will both be B2C, I'm especially excited to try my hand at B2B apps. Any advice from other solo app developers is much appreciated.

So far I've worked locally. I want to grow my brand online. I need to drive traffic to my web store www.organicmake.com on shopify to have more traffic. If someone here is good at paid traffic, reach out. I need help - I'm NOT a tech person. I understand what women want and creative. Thanks Charlotte

  246. 1

Hi, I'm Muhammad, I'm currently a Customer Success Specialist, looking to transition to Product Management, while I work on my own personal project, which is to build my first online business before 2020 runs out. The business idea is to develop an online school to sell tutorials for mandatory
secondary school final exams and mandatory university entrance exams. Over 2 million students write this exams every year in my country, I wrote them too some years back, and over 90% of the time, you have to attend some classes dedicated to preparing you for the exams. In the wake of COVID 19, schools have been shut for months, and independent tutorial centers are closed too. I'm basically looking at transferring the tutorial experience online, so students can access it on the go, now and even post covid.

If you find my idea fascinating and would love to work with me on it, and you know you can bring something tangible to the table in any way, then do not hesitate to reach out, I'll be glad to discuss partnership

  247. 1

Hi, I'm Gage. Started to really get tied of never being able to make any of my side projects take off till just recently. I'm really excited about it and hope you all can help me validate my ideas. I'm a parent of 3 so can't quit my day job but would love to feel some success with a side business.

    1. 2

Tired of never taking off any side project.... In the same shoes as you😊

I gave me a target this time not to finish 2020 without starting one..

      1. 1

I found out that the #1 trick is to not worry about doing things the right way. Building things server side generated was a huge productivity boost for me in an era where everyone is building a single page app. This way I don't have to pay for auth0 or firebase. It's not "best practice" but I found out what really matters is the user experience and that's much more dependent on effort and empathy than tech.

  248. 1

    Hi there,
My name is Mike and I live in Queensland, Australia. I’m originally from the UK but have been in Australia now for 20 years.

I’m now in my twilight years having recently just celebrated my 61st birthday. I used to own and run a furniture retail and wholesale business in the UK and now still buy and sell furniture and interiors products but on a much smaller scale.

I recently lost my wife of 40 years to cancer and since then have struggled to find a purpose in life, I still see myself as an entrepreneur with a lot of experience and always have a stream of ideas that would love to pursue but find it difficult to keep up with the advances in technology and social media.

I look forward to connecting with like minded people on this platform and exchanging ideas and experiences.

    Mike

    1. 1

Hi MIke, I am sorry for your loss and I can understand your situation being into similar one myself. Its a convincing feeling that you are not alone. Please reach out to me [email protected] whenever.

    2. 1

I'm sorry about your loss Mike. I pray she's in a better place.
I'm new here as well, hopefully we can get to interact and know each other better while sharing ideas and experiences
