Welcome, introduce yourself! (Week of Nov 8th)

Rosie here -- the Indie Hackers community manager. Welcome! ๐Ÿ‘‹

This short guide is meant to help you get the most out of Indie Hackers.

First, introduce yourself!

Indie Hackers is a community of people helping each other build profitable businesses and side projects. The key word here is "community." Don't be shy!

For starters, take a second to introduce yourself and share your goals in the comments below. ๐Ÿ‘‡

Just say a few words about who you are, why you're here, and what you hope to accomplish or learn in 2020.

Take a moment to say hello to someone else as well!

Dive into learning.

We've interviewed hundreds of successful indie hackers. I recommend reading a few of their stories. It's a great way to get an overview of what's possible.

@csallen also puts out podcast episodes if reading isn't your thing!

Next, get started!

There's no time like the present. Check out the "Start Here" page for a list of practical steps and articles that can help you take action.

Not only will it help you get started, but it should also introduce you to some of the best parts of the Indie Hackers community.

This is just the tip of the iceberg! If you're ever feeling lost or confused, post in the Meta group or tag me (@rosiesherry) in any comment or post.

Don't forget to introduce yourself and say hi to someone else below! ๐Ÿค—

Hi everyone! I'm Natasha, the founder of LevelUp -- an app that connects women mentors & mentees in order to help them grow and progress further (level up!) in their careers, as well as create a community of like-minded individuals.

Currently, the app connects women to mentors based on role/industry, allowing them to chat directly with mentors to give them advice & guidance and arrange either virtual or in-person meetups, but I'm planning to add a lot more features and launch the MVP to beta testers ASAP.

I'm also looking for a technical co-founder to help me build out the product vision, so if you're interested in joining the team or just want to learn more please contact me at [email protected]!

My LinkedIn is: https://www.linkedin.com/in/natasha-khimji-337b3896, would be great to connect :)

    1. 1

That's awesome! I am super interested. I would love to find a mentor to help me understand sales in B2B! for sure

      1. 1

Thank you! Are you willing to help me test out a (very preliminary version) of the app & give me feedback by any chance? No worries if not, but if you are if you could drop your email here that would be great thanks so much!

          1. 1

            Great thanks a lot!

    2. 1

Nice idea! I hope you succeed

      1. 1

Hey everyone, I'm Darrell based in London. Im a software engineer working at a famous Search Company : ). I recently started working on swesuite.com with a friend.

It is a project-based course attempting to teach all the tools and processes that go into building internet products at scale (currently server-side).

We felt that engineering tools and concepts can often seem disconnected and random, so weโ€™re trying to teach all the need-to-know ideas in context. More content to come!

    1. 1

Wow that's fantastic! Such a great idea! How are you planning to deliver this knowledge to users?

      1. 1

Hey thanks, We hope we can deliver this through project based learning. Check out swesuite.com. We are building our first course now, where users build a WhatsApp like backend.

hey! I'm Charles based in New York City. I sold my last startup to Intuit and left last year after spending four years at Intuit as a software engineer. I took some time off to travel and I'm not starting to work on new things.

    1. 2

      That's seems amazing! Well done!

    2. 2

Wow that's awesome. I just took a job with them to earn some start up investment capital

      1. 1

congrats on the job! My first job after college was at Microsoft and I used the money I earned there to bootstrap my startup.

Hi Everyone! I'm Alex from Germany / Thailand but living in Mexico and found IndieHackers while looking for a community around building your own products and want to learn from everyone here as well as share my insights as a UI/UX Designer :)

I am currently working on my own collaboration tool called Parakeet to help Designers and Developers discuss and provide feedback on designs on both static images and soon directly on live production sites. Me and my co-founder Will, who is a developer himself, built Parakeet to solve our own problems and have come to a point where we want to share it with the world and get feedback and input to improve our product.

If anyone would like to be our first users please let me know and if you want design feedback on your own products, websites and apps I am happy to leave comments using Parakeet ๐Ÿ™Œ https://flyparakeet.com/

    Happy Friday!

Hi everyone, it's humbling joining this gigantic group of founders and makers. I'm Jasmine, a founder in the US. I left a hedge fund last year to try and make something that helps me, and now, hopefully others. I was personally frustrated that after two ivy degrees, no one had taught me crucial self-and-other management skills. At the hedge fund, my core competency was doing a ton of research and making sense of it, drawing conclusions we could use to make good investments. So I thought: why don't I do that same thing, but for the things that matter most to our lives? I was also disappointed with the lack of rigor in mental wellness products. Meditation and CBT is amazing, but can't teach you to become a better partner or boss. Your self, career, and relationships are intertwined and ought to be addressed in one cohesive program. So I set out to research and create the course/app I wish I'd had. Today, that's www.lifeintelligence.io. We're launching on PH this Friday, and would really appreciate any support! Most of my friends don't even know what product hunt is! Coming from non-tech, I'm humbled and grateful for how much many who don't even know me have helped out. Thanks for letting me be a part of all the innovation happening here!

    1. 1

      Nice website and interesting product!

    2. 1

I will surely checkout your product

  6. 3

    Hey everyone!

I'm Reed, a recent business graduate from Canada. I've been job hunting for a little while now and thought I would try to learn some new skills while I have the time.

I'm also working on a micro SaaS project breaking down digital marketing data and providing suggestions based on real-time metrics (a sort of automated consultant) for small businesses doing their own online marketing. Still in the early stages and hoping the idea is not too complex to execute.

Hoping to connect with some of you! :)

    1. 1

Hi Reed! The idea seems amazing!

  7. 3

    Heya all,

I'm Oscar from the Netherlands. I'm a frontend engineer at a media company with a strong focus on optimisation.
No concrete plans to start anything this year; I'm here for the stories and to let a few ideas simmer before taking action on them.

    Cheers!

Hello everyone! I'm Alejandro, from Colombia. I live in the coffee axis, but I don't drink coffee. I work as SEO Lead for Platzi.com and also have my own SEO courses on seoendias.com

I'm in the middle of finding automation for user acquisition using free courses as lead magnets, facebook ads, and email marketing. My goal is to reach $5.000 MRR.

Hi there! Iโ€™m Faiz from Malaysia. Working with a couple of guys on some side projects that we hope will take off soon.

Weirdly enough, one of those side projects spun off another sub-side project! This โ€œmini-projectโ€ - kinda like Linktree, but for podcasters - is the easiest one to take off as thereโ€™s minimal time/cost required to work on, while waiting for the others to launch.

    Hope everyoneโ€™s doing well. #staysafe

Hi everyone! I'm currently working as a software engineer for an insurance company. I'm mainly a front-end developer, but to realize personal projects, I collected a large set of knowledge on the back-end, DevOps and cloud side. I want to realize a platform to search for what people are interested in... people.
I hope that here I can find the support I need to accomplish my ambitious project.

    Cheers! ๐Ÿค“

Hi - Alastair here from Where Can I Live (https://wherecani.live) . Our business is helping people to move abroad. With such difficulties in global migration at present I'm looking for inspiration and motivation to keep our momentum up through these difficult times.

And, I love seeing cool stuff being done by smart people... and there is no shortage of that here.

  12. 2

    Hello all,

I'm Michelle, I'm here because of current times have left me with a lot of time at home and I'm wanting to branch out more into the world of data. I do not have an exact Project in mind just now however that is why I am here...I have tons of backend knowledge and experience dealing with databases.

  13. 2

    Hey Y'all!

I'm Matt a long time product manager. I've built and sold a venture back startup and now setting out to build my own solo SaaS project. Excited to do that here with a few kindred spirits.

I'm hacking away at Candidate Book and just released a phase 1 free job description generator product here --> https://www.candidatebook.co/

Working on the paid product now! Would love any feedback on the initial product and otherwise looking forward to geeking out with the crew here!

Hi, I'm Artem, I'm a dev living in Lithuania. While our main startup, flyent, is moving forward too slowly, I got inspired by 100's of stories here on IH and decided to create a series of quick small projects. While my first two ideas didn't go well (fortunately, I was smart enough to check the demand before coding anything), I hope my current idea, startab, gets a better response.

My goal is to release the landing page tomorrow and get at least 100 email addresses. If I manage to get a hundred paying users for this project, I'll consider it a success and move to the next one. But deep inside I hope that it grows enough to let me leave my job and focus on doing what I love.

    1. 2

Best of luck, Artem... Please share details of the project when you are ready.

    2. 1

Hi Dev that seems super achievable as a goal! one step at a time right?

  15. 2

Hello All --- My name is Lou and I'm from the Northeast US

My story: wife recruited me to help her on a mobile startup idea she had and I discovered that there was no backend service that had the features/performance that we needed to make the project a reality.

So...we've been rolling my own backend service with all sorts of great features; deep queries, atomic writes, versioning, simple api, etc...

The plan is to launch the backend (both as a hosted service or download) to make it fast and easy for other indie hackers to create their own projects (mobile, web, desktop)

    Hi all,

Jake and Josh here of Sugman Engineering. We're an engineering team working to bring 3D printing tech to the masses by helping entrepreneurs like you start your own profitable 3D printing business from scratch. We walk you through how to set up, calibrate, print, and design using CAD software. We'd like to build out and automate this process as much as possible, achieving a MRR of at least 20K/Month. We are not software developers and could use help navigating this world.

We're looking forward to learning from this community and contributing our knowledge. If you have any questions about 3D printing or other manufacturing technologies (we work with CNC, Lasers, Welders, Lathes, Wood, Plastic and more), feel free to reach out. We have extensive knowledge in the world of manufacturing and are happy to share what we know.

    Cheers,

    Jake and Josh

Hi Everyone - I'm Justin, and I live in Nashville, TN. I've spent the last decade building a few really big startup companies. Most recently, I was the SVP of Sales and then CRO at an LA-based SaaS business called PatientPop, where I grew it from $0 to $50M in recurring revenue. Prior the that, I was a sub-10 employee at an NYC company called ZocDoc, where I spent 5 years in various leadership roles.

Now, I'm working on building a community to help people launch their own businesses online through scalable digital assets. Excited to be here.

    1. 2

      Hey Justin,

It looks like we both just joined this community. I've been lurking for a while, but am becoming more involved.

My business partner and I are doing something similar to you - We're helping people start 3D printing businesses from scratch. We're testing the idea now, and have had success on a small, local scale (20-ish people). I'd love to contribute to what you're doing by joining your online platform and helping test it early if that's something you would be open to. We're hoping to scale our business online.

      In any case, good luck!

      Cheers,

      Josh

My name is Joseph Okoroafor from Lagos Nigeria. I work in Education Technology as a Product Marketing Specialist and have been bouncing ideas on how to create profitable saas businesses. I lack plenty skills for development. I have tried learning myself and it is not working, I have a friend who is good at flutter and .NET framework so we are partnering on any idea we can come up with. Today is exactly one week I got married to the Love of my life, Catherine

    Hello everyone!

I'm Teddy, the creator of Hot Prospect, an app that helps people manage prolonged job searches. https://bit.ly/2IS8xoN

I used to have a podcast about tech-culture called The Imposters Club. That was fun, but after the first round of Coronavirus layoffs, I quit punditry to do something helpful for the insane number of people who have been laid off this year.

    I'm here for the inspiration!

My name is Hunter and I have decided to go from wantreprenuer to entrepreneur in 2020. This is the 1st step of many in trying to take massive action towards creating a business while learning new and valuable skills along the way. I look forward to learning, failing, failing again, then failing again but better, and then finally tasting successes. Excited for the journey....See you all at the top!

I'm Mai from Vietnam. I'm working on a platform to help non-tech people build and use image recognition applications http://lookuq.com/. I have been not so good at connecting and community building. So I'm here to connect to more hackers and learn how to help others with what I do.

    Hi all!

I'm Alessandro from Italy. Mostly backend developer with hands also on frontend, with lots of experience as a consultant.

I'm wishing to start something but unsure what exactly at the moment.

Surely I'm here at least to figure out how to start my own business and making it profitable at least to pay rent (it will be a huge conquer to me!)

I'm always open to collaboration in interesting projects either as contractor or co-founder/technical-founder. Maybe. I don't know.

Glad to be here, thanks to the founders of this community, hope to be good part of it soon!

Hi, I am Nayan from Mumbai, India. I think I can resonate with you since I have similar experience as you and started my own startup last year. I got lucky and within 18 months I was able to earn profit from my business. If you are interested then we can talk. [email protected]

Hey everyone, I'm Lars from The Netherlands. Currently building www.fairify.io to make sustainable shopping easy with our Chrome extension. We detect the brand while you browse, provide reliable sustainability info and better alternatives. Here to learn!

  26. 2

    Hello everyone,

I feel a bit out of place because I'm not a coder. I'd hardly call myself an Indie Hacker. I'm a strategy guy and investor (booooooo!). But I don't want to be forever, and I want to create some freedom in my career long-term and not always have to be an employee.

So I'm starting here, thinking about how I can slowly but surely evolve my skills, maybe even build something, and learn from this community.

    Cheers!
    Justin

    Good day everyone!

Iโ€™m just here to learn new stuff. Just finished my masters degree and have been working full time at a FANG company since over a year.

My goal for 2021 is to just build a lot of stuff for fun and once I feel proficient enough to be able to handle a product from start to finish start my first Endeavour to make 10$ of monthly recurring revenue.

Until 2030 I want to have one or several side business established that I can run while continuing a part time job. Monthly revenue goal would be 15K. Appreciate any guidance on making this happen.

Nice to get to know you & never be shy to ask for my help!

  28. 2

    1. 1

That is a dope idea. Actually could be useful for my wife.
I'm still not sure when the payment occurs, is it before the call?
So you basically pre-sell let's say 30 minutes and the call gets cut off when the time is up or the payment occurs after the call?

      1. 1

Thanks Kedzior! yes you can charge per session or per min. we even offer a couple of initial free min as an option.

Hey all. I'm Ben - based out of Brighton & Hove, UK

I left front-of-house hospitality after my last employer went bust over a year ago and I took that as sign to leave hospitality altogether on account of it being mostly awful.
I'd been in and out of cafe/restaurant jobs for 8+ years, one of those "how/why did I end up like this?" situations ๐Ÿ˜…

Been steadily reskilling in digital and business since ๐Ÿง—

I had a neat idea for a digital product for hospitality after covid first hit but after making a prototype in Carrd - it's actually incredibly simple in principle - I quickly realised it needed to be a SaaS to be worth doing as a business, but I didn't have the confidence to try and build it myself.

Learnt a lot since then, and need to learn a lot more still, but the idea came back to me recently when I went to a pub for the first time in ages (before we locked down again) and the dire need for something like this product reared it's ugly head ๐Ÿ‘น

Hi all, I'm Umar based in Sri Lanka. Left my corporate job 5 years ago and tried several things and found my passion in building websites.

I've been reading and learning a lot on building online businesses and I've tried (and continue trying) to help local based businesses with solutions that they would find useful. These include helping them set up a web presence, generate leads and automate their marketing processes.

I've worked with a host of tools to achieve them and I've finally found a way to package them all together (hopefully it works).

My only worry is that I've noticed many players offering this in form or another so currently finding it hard to stand out.

I'm currently in the process of piecing all my learnings in a book - hopefully it comes out as I expect.

And more importantly, hopefully I could connect with you wonderful people to work on something in collaboration. ALWAYS ALWAYS ALWAYS open to it!

Hiya everyone! My name is Radi and I hail from the little old island of New Zealand. I spent the last few years finishing my university degree and interning at various places (PwC, EY, Microsoft). 2020 was supposed to be a year off of work to travel but after Covid cut that short, I decided that I didn't want to go back into the corporate world just yet. So I spent the majority of this year writing, reading, learning, and generally living healthier. I have so enjoyed the lifestyle I have been able to build this year that now I am intent on finding ways to make it sustianable i.e. become an IndieHacker :) I look forward to connecting and collaborating with many with you here!!

Our current goal is to provide clinicians with a Virtual Triage of their patients so they can offer timely intervention to prevent complications. This is significantly important particularly during the COVID-19 pandemic. We are looking for efficient and effective ways to use social media to gain market exposure and access.

    Hello Everyone,

My name is Joe and I am based in Washington D.C.
I've started a few startups in the Blockchain space and have amassed a nice rolodex of VCs and friends out in Asia and in the US. Via my last startup, I joined one of South East Asia's largest blockchain consortium groups and now currently starting on a new project called ZAP (TBD). Zap is a blockchain streaming platform for Esports and Gamers to showcase their skills and entertain their audience. My goal is to incorporate a cryptocurrency which can be used to purchase in-game rewards and be withdrawn for fiat. Our partner's are also creating their own eco-system which revolves around online gaming (online casino games) and also a Blockchain Smart City in the Philippines.

Apologies for the long intro, but in short, I'd like to create a platform and cryptocurrency that can be interoperable with other platforms!

I need a technical co-founder who is interested in the above and can help me grow this project.

    Thanks!

Hello! I've been into design (graphic, web, UX/UI) for a few years now, I studied a bachelors in multimedia design but thinking of dropping out because other things in life came up, I think I can work on what I like, designing websites, apps, digital content creation finishing my studies by myself anyway. I am hoping indiehackers will help me in this journey, to meet people like me and help each other.

    Hi there,

I'm Alessandro, the founder of now4real.com.

I'm thrilled to be here! There is a ton of good advice on Indie Hackers and I hope to contribute.

In the meanwhile, I'd love to get feedback on my SaaS. If you integrate Now4real on a website, we count in real-time how many people have the same page visible in the foreground and expose these real-time presence counters. As soon as a page goes to the background (another browser tab gets the focus, another app goes in the foreground, etc.), the counter is instantly decreased by 1. We call INSTANT COMMUNITY the group of people who happen to be visiting the same page at the same time. Now4real connects these people via a group chat for every web page, which we call a PAGECHAT.

This means that Now4real can easily transform any website into a live environment, where people can meet like in the real world. They are on a train, at the cafe, or at the local park in the physical world, but they are also visiting a web page, which is a virtual place. Now4real connects them in real-time.

    Thanks!

    Hello fellow hackers,

I am Sandeep from Bay Area. I am the founder of https://kleeppr.com.

Kleeppr lets you find interesting newsletters and subscribe to them anonymously. I started Kleeppr to solve personal pain points around newsletter discovery, privacy concerns about sharing personal or work email address, and inbox clutter. Kleeppr users search and subscribe to newsletters using KleepprID instead of their personal or work email and read/manage their subscriptions within the app.

Indiehackers community has always been inspirational. Looking forward to feedback and advice.

I also have a background in leading engineering and product for enterprise software and will happy to help!

    Cheers!

    Hey folks!

I'm Andrew, and I'm a full-stack developer for a financial wellness company. For a few years now I've had a strong itch to start my own business, but I've been frustrated by the lack of inspiration that I've had. I recently came across IH and I have been motivated and encouraged to start finding problems to solve, even if they are seemingly small or hard to scale.

My motivation is to provide for my family and have the flexibility that working for yourself provides. I hope one day to be able to post here about my success, but for now, see you around!

I'm Jeff, in Boston. In the past, I've done engineering, design and product management for tech and media companies.

But I've always had this one nagging problem in the back of my mind.

It's always felt harder than it should be to collect and analyze user feedback. To really understand the voice of the customer.

I'm working on ListenKit to solve that problem for others in my position.

I've given myself four months to get to 20 customers. Then I'll consider next steps.

    Hey Rosie and everyone else,

I hope you're having an amazing day!

I'm a content strategist/manager, and basically my goals for 2020 are:

    1. Stay sane
    2. Work super hard on broadening knowledge, skills and beliefs
    3. Challenge myself and get out of the comfort zone as much as possible

2020 has almost ended and I quit my 9-5 agency work, landed a new job with an amazing Canadian company ConversionAdvocates, learned a new language (Italian), spent entire summer in Italy (still counting my blessings), finished at least 15 courses...

Attitude, hard work and staying positive is everything! In your face 2020!!! :D

Hi everyone! I'm David, and I run New World Same Humans. It's a newsletter on trends, technology, and society, and a community for those on a mission to help build a better shared future.

Right now, the community is coming together to write a one-page document on the core principles we believe should guide us all as we rebuild in the 2020s. We're calling it the New World Manifesto project.

My background is futures work, and before that journalism. I was Global Head of Insight at a consumer trends firm called TrendWatching, and started my career as a features writer at The Times newspaper in London.

Look forward to talking to, and learning from, you all!

    Greeting fellow hackers!

My name is Octavian, a dreamer from Romania, specialized in AWS cloud security solutions.

During my time as a security incident responder for the top Forbes companies, I have realized that small businesses need my help more than the big guys.

With that in mind, coupled with a desire to express myself I have developed a B2B service targeted specifically at small businesses that operate in the AWS cloud environment.

Check it out at - arhisec.cloud

    Feedback is highly encouraged,
    Thanks!

    Hey guys,

I am Sami from Bahrain. A knowledge worker with over 10 years of experience in implementing change in organizations through software's and business processes.

Having all this experience of bringing change to organizations, I have gained skills in implementing low-code applications, business automation, knowledge base building, streamlining business processes etc. I have this idea of forming a company someday which will help businesses on the internet do the above stuff but with a unique promise - the solution offered will always be built tailored to the business needs.

I am joining this community after listening to a lot of podcasts and success stories. I hope to find like minded people here and embark on a journey to learn new stuff.

    Cheers!

    Hi All,

I'm Ben and I'm currently working on an MVP for a product called Fair Interview. The basic idea behind this is to allow businesses to conduct fair and consistent interviews.

I don't know about you but in many companies I've worked in, in the past, the interview process varied wildly depending on who your interviewer was. This is the problem I'm setting out to solve.

As I mentioned above, I'm still developing the MVP but I'm aiming to try to have something ready by the end of 2020 and able to start bring on testers in early 2021 (or, hopefully sooner).

    See you all around

Hi, I am Nayan from Mumbai, India. I left my job couple of years ago to start my own startup Crazy Ideas. My passion is to develop an open source platform tool to analyze and understand TPF code. While this is in work, I also take up side-projects on web development. I am open for a partner who can join me in my journey. Also, if anybody else needs help in starting a StartUp on their own, I am happy to provide my 2 cents for free! :-)
I joined Indie Hacker after hearing from Courtland, the Founder of Indie Hacker in Google for Startup session. I could really empathize with his journey and became a fan.

I am Ian, living just north of Seattle. After getting out of the restaurant industry in January, I have been full-time teaching myself python/django and lots of other services...I am building a tool to help restaurant owners promote their lunch and dinner specials through a one-click social media publisher, easy ads and a few other tricks I have up my sleeve.

Anyway, I'm kind of working solo so would love to chat with anyone interested! I wish you all luck!

    ๐Ÿ‘‹Hello
    I'm Adam from Canada.
Formally a video editor (well at least from a professional standpoint). I've always dabbled with coding, but ever since I caught wind of the no-code movement, I pivoted to focusing on mastering some of its better known tools (Airtable, Notion, Bubble).
Currently applying that knowledge to a few ideas I've been living with for the last little while.
Slow to start, but passionate to see it through.
    Glad to be here.

Hello, I'm Cristian from Romania, as a career which is at the moment 10 years, is in the IT automotive sector, focused on the non-technical part, Process Management and Configuration Management.

Hi I'm Dan from UK. I'm a creative person coming from a tech background with a passion for creating new web products. I've got 15 years experience working with start-ups and small businesses as a developer, consultant, founder or co-founder. I've created several businesses, some of which are still running today, some that are not, and I'm keen to start something new in 2021.

In terms of a goal I'm trying to refine a shortlist of ideas to work on, so I suppose my next goal is to create some landing pages with trackers on and see what ideas float! I'm most passionate about ideas pertaining to music (I'm a musician), ed-tech / jobs (I ran a bootcamp for 5 years that had a particular focus on getting web developers hired) and health (my sister's a doctor and she's amazing! And this sector is ripe for innovation)

I'd love to hear from tech people on a similar journey, or non-tech people who are looking for a tech co-founder for either advice / validation or suggestions on how we might work together.

    Hi everyone!
I'm Loukmane. I am from a tiny French Island called Reunion (if you are curious: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rรฉunion) but currently living in Vancouver, Canada.
I am a software engineer working in a large company at the moment, but I have always been passionate about the creative side of starting projects. For my entire career always had a side project that I was working on for fun and got my first contract three years ago (amazing feeling!), the project didn't really succeed at the end but was lots of learning.
I currently am working on a an esports education platform aiming at providing young students with quality content about how to get better at the game they love while teaching them how to take care of their health and about the esport industry with two other friends located in Brisbane, Australia.

I discovered this community recently and I am really looking forward to be part of it, as I think it could be more fun to face all the startup journey together!

Good Luck & Have Fun everyone!
