Welcome, introduce yourself! (Week of Oct 11th)

Rosie here -- the Indie Hackers community manager. Welcome! ๐Ÿ‘‹

This short guide is meant to help you get the most out of Indie Hackers.

First, introduce yourself!

Indie Hackers is a community of people helping each other build profitable businesses and side projects. The key word here is "community." Don't be shy!

For starters, take a second to introduce yourself and share your goals in the comments below. ๐Ÿ‘‡

Just say a few words about who you are, why you're here, and what you hope to accomplish or learn in 2020.

Take a moment to say hello to someone else as well!

Dive into learning.

We've interviewed hundreds of successful indie hackers. I recommend reading a few of their stories. It's a great way to get an overview of what's possible.

@csallen also puts out podcast episodes if reading isn't your thing!

Next, get started!

There's no time like the present. Check out the "Start Here" page for a list of practical steps and articles that can help you take action.

Not only will it help you get started, but it should also introduce you to some of the best parts of the Indie Hackers community.

This is just the tip of the iceberg! If you're ever feeling lost or confused, post in the Meta group or tag me (@rosiesherry) in any comment or post.

Don't forget to introduce yourself and say hi to someone else below! ๐Ÿค—

Hey there hackers! I work as a software engineer and am recently a new dad. I have two side projects I want to explore and so I was really excited to see the indie hackers parents group. I am already reading some great tips and messages of support that will help keep me motivated to achieve balance in being a good parent and making time for my projects!

    1. 1

Hey Leeto, I'll be in the same boat as you in a couple of months, congratulations and kudos for trying to balance being a good dad and being a good software engineer!

    Hello there!

I work as a data engineer for a fintech in London and for the past year and a bit I've been working on Organisely with my co-founder, an appointment management system for beauty salons and dentists. We've seen moderate growth so far (all word-of-mouth) but realised that we don't have a strong Founder-Market fit with the CRM business.

We've started becoming interested in SEO and automation around it, so we've started working on SEOly.

I'm really grateful this community exists as it's always refreshing to read and learn from others & hoping to start sharing learnings here as well :)

    Hello, Hackers!
I'm a Digital Consultant with 18 years experience (mostly in front end, design&UX, digital marketing, growth hacking and team leadership), and I recently discovered my love for creating content (written and video โ€“ in Romanian for now @ https://www.viorelmocanu.ro/ and https://www.youtube.com/c/ViorelMocanu โ€“ but English is coming very soon), trying to share some of my experience with the rest of the industry. My dream is to be able to have a mix of free and paid content that would support me into doing this full time. I got here due to a superb article by Daniel Vassallo about selling 2 pieces of info content for 237k in a year, and it clicked. :)
Looking forward to consuming more awesome content and actually starting building a business out of it.
Thank you for having such an awesome community and such great content!

    Hey Everyone,

I'm Grant and my side hustle is Develomentor, https://develomentor.com. It's a podcast and content site focused on careers in technology and all the different ways people can participate in the tech economy. I just published our 100th episode (feat. Kent C Dodds https://develomentor.com/2020/10/15/kent-c-dodds-software-quality-instructor-and-world-renowned-speaker-100/). Right now, I'm focused on growing out my content while keeping this as a side hustle. We publish two interviews per week with people working in tech from a variety of backgrounds, plus a monthly bonus episode on topics related to working in tech. Longer term, I intend to add content focused on practical career advice as well as coaching and consulting services. Really looking forward to learning from others here.

    Hey there fellow hackers! :-)

I am running a startup working in education area. I found a lots of useful advices on this platform and am here to share the good and the bad, and get feedback from you on my journey.

The most important advice I got here was to work with @Start_Law as they were the one to help me off the ground while I was stuck with incorporating US company and opening bank account.

Looking forward to sharing and learning more. Thank you all!

@dejanj thank you so much for the mention! I thought that I had talked to you here, but couldn't find your profile when I looked so glad to be able to follow you.

If anyone needs a great development company check out @dejanj's stuntcoders!

Hi everyone, I faced this problem of too much noise and lack of personal 1-1 feedback on what I was making. So from past few months, I have been building a private community for people who want to work together in a small community to achieve their individual goals as well as find opportunities to work in a small team ๐Ÿค—

  8. 2

Hi, everyone. I don't want to fake it and just say that I am excited to be here and things like that. I don't know. I am here to find like-minded people. Who are oriented on the growth and development of their project? I believe it would be helpful to hear what others have problems with; try to solve their problems together is a great way to learn. I hope to get help and good advice as well. So, let's see if my being here is going to become more and more exciting and beneficial. :) for me and others.

For over 22 years, I have been doing business. I live in Tbilisi, Georgia. I founded an advertising agency at the age of 19, and hacked its success with hard work, and became the largest agency in my region, country. As part of the agency, I got involved in producing TV commercials, then directed them. Later I have managed to film two movies, you can find them on iTunes and other platforms, find Levan Bakhia as director, that's me. I also have hacked through culture and made Holoseum, a digital art museum. You could google that as well, covered by major media around the globe.

Recently I started a blog/youtube channel. (timewellused.com) I share my view of time management and productivity. Which is why I came here. I need your support, suggestions, advice, making it better, and what I am doing wrong. What are the ways to grow? On the other hand, I will help anyone feel frustrated and overwhelmed in this community. I think I will have some worth of advice hearing. Or I will do my best.

Hey I'm William. I'm working on a marketplace for physical music (vinyl, cassettes, etc). I've gone through Y Combinator's Startup School and applied for their Winter batch but I don't have much hope I'll get in. I'm hoping to meet other founders/hackers and plug into a community as I don't know too many people. I live and travel full time in a motorhome and play folk music in my free time.

  12. 2

Hey there team! Hope you're all going well :D Last year I sold my marketing agency and I'm focusing on building some growth marketing software called Hello Mellows to help startups & indie hackers experiment, collaborate, and grow with more clarity ๐Ÿ™Œ

What's going on IndieHackers! I am a Creative Director of a tech startup, a comedy writer, and I just recently founded a clothing line in Los Angeles that is my current side hustle but I hope to turn into something that can cover my expenses! Something I struggle with is the feeling that my company will never be what I hope it will and that I'll feel like I failed. I only launched 5 days ago and already feel frustrated that my launch was not as successful as I'd anticipated!

  17. 2

Hi everyone! Excited to be here. I'm Basak, building https://apparent.today an online service to learn about parenting and child psychology through short daily listenings (2-5 mins). I'm here to learn about other founder's journeys, get feedback on my work and connect with other maker parents!

Hello Indie hackers. I am web designer, growth marketer and co-founder of Loupe + Grain. My company is focused on bridging the gap between visual creatives (I.e photographers, videographers, graphic designers, web developers) that care about representation and businesses seeking diverse perspectives.

I am happy I found this community and would love to connect with other entrepreneurs and learn from your successes and mistakes. Feel free to dm me if you would like to connect.

Hey everyone! Harry here. I used to be a quant trader; now a full-time founder of inmotion.app; I decided to leave my job to found Motion because it's much more exciting to have full control over my own thing. We recently went through YC's W20 batch. Unlike a lot of venture-backed startups, we want to get to profitability asap first before expanding. Not until recently did I realize how many valuable interviews and insights there are on indiehacker, so I'd love to join the community and learn from all of you, and contribute wherever I can.

Hi all, I am really excited to be here. I am a self-taught developer. I am working on a product that could help e-commerce website owners to provide a very fast and fluid user experience on their website. I am sure I will learn a lot here and I am willing to help and share the little experience I have, as much as I can.

  24. 1

Whats up everyone, my name is Hugh!

I run a successful software company in NYC called Sanctuary Computer, that already releases all of our financials on medium and github. We have a lot of weird and interestin gopinions around transparency and egalitarianism <3

We're currently starting to invest in building out our own products, starting with Spirit Fish (https://www.spirit.fish), so I'm excited to learn more about the community, and try and see how I can be helpful, too! :)

Hello! I'm Roman. I was reading Indie Hackers for long time, but only now starting to push my side project to market. It's hard! So engaging more with communities will help me, and maybe I could help too with something.

My side-project is https://optduty.com/ smart and flexible On-Call scheduling for remote, distributed teams. Trying to get the second client right now.

Looking forward to sharing and learning more.

Hi everyone, full stack developer here, I've had a lot of ideas in the past but I mostly grow tired of them, I'm looking for resources to validate ideas early, and I'm very interested in gamification.

    1. 1

Hello. If you would like to carve out an hour for a brainstorm session, maybe we could pinpoint 1 idea that you can focus on and feel fulfilled with working toward. If none of your ideas truly ignite your inner passion, maybe my side project will fire you up LOL. I do hope to bring gamification into my platform asap and am very interested in my users having fun while benefiting from the core value proposition of the brand.

Hi. My name is Neti, I am a Supply Chain Specialist. I need to learn how to generate an idea and carry it all the way to execution..

    1. 1

      Hello Neti,
May I suggest that you do'nt need to generate an idea, rather, you need to solve a problem. When you first identify the problem, then you can think of ideas to solve that problem. But only if the problem is worth solving. To determine if the problem is worth solving, you must ask yourself 2 things: first, prevalent is this problem? and how passionate am I about this problem & solving it?

In conclusion, do not generate an idea and then search for a problem, identify the problem first. Then your passion for solving this problem is what will carry you through the execution. Remember to be resourceful not rely on resources ;)

Hey everyone! ๐Ÿ‘‹ I'm Raul. An aspiring entrepreneur that lives in Timisoara, Romania with my wife, and traveled throughout the world during the past seven years.

Now that the pandemic hit, I wanted to shift my focus to myself and intrinsic motivations (maybe too selfish?). I started looking for ways to help our community and the society. I feel like I'm at a place now where I can finally give something back, and not absorb stuff only.

Last week, I took my income down to $0 to work on my side-projects full-time, and my wife just enrolled into pedagogy university to follow one of her career dreams: become a teacher for small kids. We have some savings that should last us a year if nothing out of the ordinary happens health-wise to one of us. It's still scarry thinking this might fail miserably, and from looking at the odds, it's probably gonna do, but hell, it's worth a shot. Better now than once we have a baby, and I have the pressure of providing for my family.

I worked on two side-projects so far: fairremote.com and econub.com. Right now they earn $0. I hope that by the same time next year, I'll be at a comfortable spot to not have to go back to working for another client ๐ŸคžI aim for $5k/month profit.

Fair Remote is wanting to be a place where you can find companies with a remote-first work culture: transparent, offers autonomy to their people, and does not require you to work extra hours to receive a badge of honor (40-hour work weeks is more than enough). It feels like there are a lot of remote opportunities now that the pandemic hit us hard, but it's hard to figure out which companies have indeed a healthy work environment. Fair Remote is an attempt at unravelling the remote companies that don't forget to focus on the people from the other ones.

EcoNub is supposed to be an ecology platform that should just start as a simple map app with the closest recycling points to you. Whenever you have to throw out larger amounts of paper, clothes, light bulbs, batteries, etc., have a way to search the nearest place to you and call the company to pick things up, or just go and deliver them yourself (if they accept). The revenue should be out of partnerships, and merchandise sale with our brand (t-shirts, mugs, bags made with eco-friendly or reusable/recycled materials).

So I'm trying to go on two directions: the remote work environment, and ecology. I invested more on the first one, and but the second one on hold for now.

I resonate with the company of one concept from Paul Jarvis, or manager of one from Basecamp, so I'm trying to become a generalist and excel at what I do. I'm a programmer at heart, but I wore many hats throughout the years (mostly on the cultural development side). I've worked remotely for over 10 years now, and fully-remote for the past 5 years, usually with US clients.

I'm eager to learn more from everyone in the community, how to grow an audience, sell something, and probably everything else a company of one is supposed to do ๐Ÿคท๐Ÿปโ€โ™‚๏ธ

  36. 1

Hey everyone. Just here to learn and utilize this community as the awesome resource it is. Hopefully I can contribute (something?) as well.

Iโ€™m working through my project now and canโ€™t wait to discuss, brainstorm share with others.

    Hello everyone,

I'm a computer engineering graduate from India. I am building an app called - Markie, which is a bookmarking extension that automatically categorizes your browser bookmarks for you.

Markie is built with ease of use in mind for the users. Bookmarking definitely needs an innovation. It's been the same old default bookmarks (one tool or the other which syncs with other devices, etc) for a long time now. I am hoping to change that pattern. You can get it here at https://getmarkie.com

I'm looking connect with you all fellow hackers and be a part of this wonderful group.

    Cheers,
    Akhil

Are you a boss business owner who needs help remembering to look after yourself?!

Hey guys, I'm an aspiring entrepreneur who is figuring out the world of working for myself. I've spent a lot of time learning and researching and am now fully committed to taking action and moving forward.

I've recently developed a chatbot reminder service, initially for my wife, that helps business owners remember to take care of themselves, (eating, drinking, spending time with loved ones), as I have found all too often that business owners are busy taking care of their business and employees.
Click below if you would like some help yourself
    Hey Business Owner
I'm looking forward to joining this community to learn and develop myself.

Hello everyone, I work as CTO in a Edtech company in Japan. Recently I released Wazaterm for my side project. Wazaterm is the browser-based terminal that you can run on any devices/os as long as it has a browser. I use this for more than a year and I think it's stable enough for everyone to use it. Now you can work from cafe with iPad, from campany with Widndows, and Mac at home seamlessly with Wazaterm.

  71. 1

Hello all, I work as a software engineer and for some reason I feel motivated to work on side projects. I just got a new puppy so have some serious time restrictions, but I still find it engaging to put time into things that very few people use. My current project is Hound Reminders, an app that allows you to send reminders to other people.

We're running our next cohort in November, pls check us out if you're interested: https://www.joincolab.io/

Otherwise, I'm quite excited to have snagged this nickname LOL and look forward to growing with and learning from everyone else :D

    Hello Community, Hello @csallen & @rosiesherry! I am Remi_B

Why do I want to be an entrepreneur?

โ€œIf you are the smartest person in the room, then you are in the wrong room.โ€œ

    • Confucius -

On the 6th of October 2020, the above quote describes what my feelings are right now. It is now for sure that the environment I am evolving in at the moment does not serve me in a positive way. Itโ€™s like being a big fish in a small pond.

The company who employs me is a french company specialized in the construction of mega projects all around the world. I am actually working with them in Australia and already have done a project with them (from 20% to 90% of completion). About 4 months ago, they sent me on a new project. My role is now to support the cost control team over there by providing my expertise, tools, and methodology.
Looking at this challenge it appears to be a very attractive one. However, the team already in place is what I consider as TOXIC.
Toxic because the team is composed of a majority of negative people. Negativity, manifested as habitual complaining, pessimism, apathy, dourness, or gossip. And the cherry on the cake, some of them have a very negative opinion about me.
Result, they donโ€™t consider me as a member of their team and have the tendency to see me as a potential risk for them to not appear bright around me.

    Being an underdog.

One year ago, I would have taken it as an opportunity to show people wrong and achieve my goals no matter what they are saying about me.

Today, my game has changed! I have new standard, listed below:
Stay away from toxic people (e.g Looser, Fearful, Weak, Gossiper, Energy drainer)
Focus my energy only on what really matter to me (e.g. Passionate, Achiever)
Surround myself with like minded people (e.g. A-Player, Bring out the best of me)
Collaborate w/ people who want to work w/ me (e.g. Curious doers, Change makers, Passionate innovators)
Keep growing myself everyday (e.g. Challenge, Learn)

    โ€œBeing a small fish in a big pondโ€

    • Unknown -

My next move is to become an entrepreneur. This is what resonates with me and what I want for my future. Why? I always had this wish somewhere in my mind and I donโ€™t want to live life having regrets or telling myself what if?

Moreover, this is what defines me. An underdog who is always looking for the journey that will challenge himself. My mantra: There is no place for lessons and growth if you donโ€™t feel uncomfortable about it.
At the end, this is the way I have decided to surf my life. So far, I never had any regrets about my past or shame about who I became.

    See you around
    Remi B.

    Hi!
I am looking for a CTO who is interested in building a disruptive space in the commercial film industry.

The idea is to invent a new space in the oligarchic Indian film industry whereby the audiences produce films by reversing the wave: rather than the few hereditary filmmakers showing the audiences what they want to show, we enable audiences to choose from a variety of concepts/ideas and see what THEY want to see.

It's a highly complex mechanism that is beyond mere crowdfunding. We empower the best of independent filmmakers by also allowing the audiences to profit monetarily from their investment. It's pretty cool, trust me.

So we have a mobile application that is a little far from a product-market-fit. My current CTO just quit and I am desperately looking to bump into the right person to have on our bus.

Thanks! You can drop me an email to hit it off instantly since I'm new here: [email protected]

    Hello everyone!
I am a mechanical engineer by edu and trade, but I started using Python a couple years back to get a handle on all of the data analysis I have to do for my current job and I fell in love coding.
I think there is a great opportunity at the intersection of tech and manufacturing, and I'm excited to work through my ideas.

  86. 1

Hi, pleased to join you, my name is Kaspars, originally from Latvia in northern Europe, but currently living in Netherlands. At the moment I am in transition process from car mechanic to developer, via Wild Code School in Amsterdam. My dream is to own start up at one point in my life, but have to start with small steps at first.

    1. 1

Hi Kaspars, congrats on learning to code! I come a non tech background too (mechanical engineering, currently working in automotive). Keep in mind, your domain knowledge as a mechanic can be very useful in trying to start a business. What problems do you run into? Can software or automation help solve these problems?

      1. 1

Hi, dsmith. Thank you for inspiration, to be honest, apart from dealer software issues, I did not came across any other issues that can be easily solved by software. But I am also looking around for other inspirations.

Right now I'm in the middle developing a website called Foursent.com selling ecologic dog and cat food. Hi folks!

A product manager building products for one of the most unconventional charters - fraud and abuse. In next 6 months, I have set myself a goal of starting my personal blog covering my learnings on below topics: Product management, MBA, Yoga and nutrition, and hopefully 'Financial freedom through microSaas' :)

I will share the link to my personal blog in about 2 weeks time and really, really look forward to the motivation from my wonderful fellow hustlers here!

    Hi Hackeratti,
I'm a software engineer with extensive experience. Nice to see your community supporting each other. Especially during this pandemic.
Just launched our app under a new name: TopInvestor.โ€จIt's been a long journey to get here, but TopInvestor just reached 48.3% subscriptions that have been active for more than a year! This has been the result of organic growth and word of mouth. Now Iโ€™m looking for a way to increase the number of customers.
    https://topinvestor.app

    What problems we solve:
With Top Investor app, mobile customers can have the data they need immediately, as soon as they see a prospective property. When customers are in the field, they can research and get data on all properties in the neighborhood on the spot.

Hey there hackers!. I am from Brazil I have been working with this technology for 10 years. But I'm in doubt about using Node Js or net Core. I am creating a new startup where the biggest market niche is in your country, where we expect to have 20 million users because it is a disruptive application. I would like to know if Net Core 3.1 adapts well to IOS mobile applications?
the main focus of the applications are images and videos of short duration 10 minutes, where I can have up to 500 thousand simultaneous accesses and only one video that goes viral.
Could someone recommend the net core as a back end, as I know very well even the multi-theads programming or the Node Js, but in the Node does not program, I did some research and I noticed that besides being single-theads, it has problems with leaks of memory?

Hey. My name is Marius. I'm currently Middle iOS Developer, workin' with Swift, UIKit and SwiftUI as well, developing iOS / Watch apps and swift libraries since 2015. Anyway, I was full stack freelance developer in .NET Core & PHP with React and Typescript.

That's about my professional experience. In terms of "why I'm here"... I would like to find cool projects and businesses to "make a dent in the universe" together. I am also passionate of leadership, business analysis, entrepreneurship and teaching so I think we can share not only programming knowledge but also soft skills.

And the weird part... i thought it is a kind of description of myself posted on my profile, not a comment posted right here. So don't judge me if it sounds weird ๐Ÿ˜…...

    Cheers guys!

  112. 1

Hi to everyone. Have read lots of the comments and what a great place to share information without feeling your being marketed to. I have been online since the good ole days and had a lot of firsts that would bore you. But self taught, learned all about how to start businesses online from A to Z. We started a lot of programming and innovations that are old hat now but were guideposts to many of the popular marketing systems online. We programmed the stats for Nascar's original home track series way back. But now I am in the Crypto world with streamlining the wild west of the blockchain. It is sort of like when the internet started and noone knew where it would go. Well we are seeing the same thing with blockchain. Thanks for the group. - Judy

Hi all! i'm Hadas. So happy to have found such a motivating piece of web!
Unfortunately, i'm not a software engineer or a marketing specialist - just a non techie girl looking to connect with others and fulfil (some of) her dreams.

Currently looking to partner up with a driven fellow dreamer, for these two projects: Create an MVP app on bubble.io And create an apparel brand using the POD business model.

Feel free to contact me if this interest you or just say Hello :)

  118. 1

    Hey everyone..!

Thank you, to all the tech community, thank you for the 'sharing mindset' that is spreading faster than any covid. The free open source movement is blooming, now more than ever. I think most of us realize that there is a curious analogy between this and an ancient idea:

Freedom will only exist as long as Knowledge is of universal access, regardless of birthplace, gender, money, personal beliefs...

History has showed us many times, what happened when a small group of people took all the knowledge with them, and prohibited access to all the rest...

We techies, most of us at least, have some sense of morality, and seeing what is happening around us lately... In my case the only thing I can do is help!

Every little bit helps. Thats what Im trying to do. From explaining how to use online tools, to guiding them with the appropiate resources to learn stuff from scratch. Helping them re-build old hardware stuff. Helping them build online business...

So be fucking awesome, guys! :)

Hi Cleverson, nice to meet ya!
I saw your comment and had to reply
i'm also a digital entrepreneur (somewhat techi), looking to partner up with someone for creating an mvp on bubble.io

let me know if you want to talk more.

      1. 1

        Hi Hadas!

Amazing how, despite the distance, dreamers get along!
My product deals with customer experience at health clubs. It intends to be a tool to allow gym operators track the user experience at the gym to flag unpleasant experiences and avoid early dropouts.
How about you? What are you aiming to built?

        1. 1

That's a good idea and a good micro niche, Cleverson.
I can defiantly see gym owners paying for a service that can reduce their dropouts and give them a better understating of their costumer experience.

Unfortunately, I don't have a concrete idea for my saas (yet), but I set a goal for myself to build and publish one by the end of 2021.
I'm aiming for a micro niche saas and found that to be the model that suits me best, mainly because it is achievable without code.

Recently I've been researching the pains of the dog trainers community, trying to identify a problem and create a solution for them.

Hello everyone - happy to join the community.

I work in venture capital and have spent my career in finance / investing roles, so I am that annoying guy with all the basic tech questions about how your company works!

Sorry! Hope you know the questions are because we are excited about what you do and appreciate your intelligence / creativity / drive.

Recently started my own newsletter - butwhatfor.substack.com - that shares summaries of other peopleโ€™s work, in addition to being adulterated by my own writing :D

Looking forward to sharing ideas from the community here.

I'm a software engineer and aspiring indie hacker. I built and launched one SaaS a few years ago, but it failed (likely due to me). Now that I have a ton more experience writing code, I'm looking to get myself back into it. Would love to build a reliable side income or switch to full time indie hacker.

Hi, I'm Joe! I have been working in machine learning for the past several years, working to build my skills enough to start my own startup in the NLP space. I am currently working on some foundational tech for a chatbot startup. I am still unexperienced in trying to find the best precise product, but I have several possible ideas in areas such as customer service and informational systems for companies to replace FAQ / Forum boards.

I would love to find a cofounder willing to help out as it's just me currently. Preferably someone in the business/marketing area, as I am a more technical person.

    Hello there!

Chris from Charleston. I have another account under Genhart Software. That business is being closed, so bought a service business (trash can cleaning business)....I know...this is a business?? It is.

I am now working on a new SaaS product to solve a big problem for me since buying this business in April. It's call My Service Area (MSA).

I thought a new account was in order. Anyway, I don't want to get ahead of myself this time around but things are moving in a positive direction.

    Talk soon!

    • Chris

Hello fellow indie hackers! Relatively recently (around 15 months ago), I had a very serendipitous opportunity come my way that resulted in me starting my own business. I left my corporate job, where I was doing really well and having lots of success, and began working as an independent consultant in the IT / Cloud sector. This was extremely new, exciting, and scary for me. I had never contemplated leaving safety and comfort of a "normal" job and being an entrepreneur. However, it has been a transformative experience thus far. I caught the so-called "entrepreneurship bug" and now I am hooked on thinking of new ways to grow and scale my business. I have couple of small side-project ideas I am starting to work on. I recently discovered this community. I am eager to learn from the community, share my story and lessons learned, and contribute back.
