Welcome, introduce yourself! (Week of Oct 4th)

Rosie here -- the Indie Hackers community manager. Welcome! ๐Ÿ‘‹

This short guide is meant to help you get the most out of Indie Hackers.

First, introduce yourself!

Indie Hackers is a community of people helping each other build profitable businesses and side projects. The key word here is "community." Don't be shy!

For starters, take a second to introduce yourself and share your goals in the comments below. ๐Ÿ‘‡

Just say a few words about who you are, why you're here, and what you hope to accomplish or learn in 2020.

Take a moment to say hello to someone else as well!

Dive into learning.

We've interviewed hundreds of successful indie hackers. I recommend reading a few of their stories. It's a great way to get an overview of what's possible.

@csallen also puts out podcast episodes if reading isn't your thing!

Next, get started!

There's no time like the present. Check out the "Start Here" page for a list of practical steps and articles that can help you take action.

Not only will it help you get started, but it should also introduce you to some of the best parts of the Indie Hackers community.

This is just the tip of the iceberg! If you're ever feeling lost or confused, post in the Meta group or tag me (@rosiesherry) in any comment or post.

Don't forget to introduce yourself and say hi to someone else below! ๐Ÿค—

Hi everyone I just found out about IH by accident and it really sparked my interest in this community.
I am an electrical engineer and I just started my business in the smart home space in the Dallas area.

I am very excited to embark on to this new adventure and see what comes out of it but most importantly I am super eager to learn how to run a profitable business while doing what I love doing, ie making the home a better place by the use of technology.

I have already worked on the website and am now in the process of getting the word out there, doing research on SEO which is totally new to me. If anyone has got good recommendations for starting up on this it will be very much appreciated.

Hey @domusaurea! I was working as an electrical engineer before I busted my butt and transitioned into a software developer role. Nice to see other electrical engineers here on Indie Hackers :)

Keep working hard and learning new things. It sounds like you're taking action, that can be the hardest part.

      1. 2

Thanks @brianjdevries thatโ€™s encouraging! How did your career turn go? What was it that made you go for the change? I feel like Iโ€™m learning something new every day and thatโ€™s what keeps me going

        1. 1

You're welcome @domusaurea! I'd say it went pretty well. I've been developing .NET APIs, SQL database queries, and applications for 6 months now professionally.

I started playing with HTML and CSS to update an internal website for my electrical engineering team. I liked it and just kept going. FreeCodeCamp really brought me up to speed. I realized I wanted to pursue it as a career and haven't stopped learning.

I have my sights on becoming a full-time indie hacker so I can spend more time with my family and build assets to build generational wealth.

Keep up the learning, you'll only grow more comfortable. The possibilities are endless!

    Hi People!!
I am a newbie here. I was recommended this site via the start-up community. In particular I am in search for a Co-founder (ideally a technical person) for Project Joy. I am based in Melbourne Australia but keen to work with anyone who is interested in social impact.

If you are looking to get stuck into a project that is based on Conversational AI / ML / data science / psychology and mental well-being and already has strong interest from investors then please shout out! :)

    1. 1

      Hi ProjectJoyAI!

I'm a recent graduate with a passion for UX Research and mental health. I have extensive experience researching the user experience of dozens of mobile mental health apps and have contributed to an academic publication that is currently being reviewed by ACM Journal of HCI.

I'm very interested in mental health and the union of technology and psychology; I'm well versed in multiple research methods and would love to find out more about your project. I'm based in the SF Bay Area; I look forward to hearing back from you!

    2. 1

Super interesting ;) I'm addicted with Social Impact Startups, keep me updated!

    3. 1

      Hi ProjectJoyAi,

I'm based in Torquay, I'd be keen to chat about this. Mental health effects my family and is close to my heart. I'm also a techie ;)

      Cheers
      Mark

      1. 1

Hi Mark, great to hear from you. Would love to chat some more. Is this the only way I can message you? First time on here. My email is [email protected]

Hi, I'm Naomi. Just found out IndieHacker from Twitter. I'm starting a blog and a newsletter about mindful eating. I'm a total newbie, but this is a project I'm really passionate about. Looking for helpful tips from experienced newsletter creators, connecting with like-minded friends and sharing the progress as I go.

    1. 1

Wishing you the best as well :)

    Hello hackers!
Im Gustav, been lurking here for a while, reading all these amazing tips and tricks that you guys share. By day i'm a product designer working in healthtech.

For the past 8-9months I have been working night and early mornings on tabExtend. It's a browser extension for managing tabs in an easy way.

Looking forward to giving back and contributing to the community!

    1. 1

This is something like Trello right? Can you please tell me about it more?

      1. 1

Also which language did you use to build it?

        1. 1

yes thats true, I have taken insipiration from a few different tools like trello and notion. But the focus is on categorize and quickly dropping tabs that you have in your browser to gain focus on what you are working on. Then im building a bunch of features around that concept. building most of it in react

Hi! I am Francio from Italy. I run some companies in the digital and fashion business. I am always in a beta version of some new ventures. Glad to share some experience and tips.

Hello everyone, my name is Roberto and I am an aspiring indie hacker. I am a self-taught web developer. I am learning new things everyday and slowly becoming a more experienced developer.

This community seems great to keep my team and I motivated. We are building what we believe is the next generation of email communication. Excited to share our project and get feedback on it.

  8. 2

Hi everyone, I found this community through @harrydry and I'm so glad to be here. I'm an undergrad, an aspiring advertiser and a social media marketer.

Since this pandemic, everything stopped. No more schooling, no social media managing gigs for me. I started writing SM managing proposals everyday but all I get are empty promises. So I decided to start my own online e-commerce business for tie-dye clothing (popatag.com) and take a Marketing course where I have learnt a whole lot. Now I'm currently writing and researching on business plan for an inter-state shop-for-me service in my country. It's an online food shopping service. In the region I am, foods are organic, fresh, and way cheaper. Fresh foods get transported from here to other parts of the country.

I'm going to be building the platform myself, using my personal funds, and constantly asking for help from Indie Hackers concerning WordPress, E-commerce, Marketing, etc. That's why I'm really really excited to be here guys. Kindly chip in any thoughts, advice, and hints you have for me, it will really be helpful. I appreciate.

    1. 1

      WELCOME :)

  9. 2

Welcome @bschalme! Happy to hear that played a small part in you deciding to join. Excited to see you around!

      Cheers!

  10. 2

    ๐Ÿ‘‹ Hi, friends.

I'm Alex. After lurking for a while I wanted to โ€” finally โ€” join this community. Tired of feeling like I'm alone on an island where I live.

I'm the founder of fyi.io โ€” an interactive tutorial platform. My whole story basically revolves around being oddly passionate about tutorials. A bit more about me, how I started fyiio, and where we're at is here: fyi.io/about

Excited to start learning and sharing what I know. ๐Ÿ™‚

    Hi everyone!

Iโ€™ve known and used IH for a long time, but as a reader, not a maker. Time to make that change!

Based in Tallinn but originally from France, I work as a Tech Lead in a local company. By night and weekends I work on FormulaireMagique.fr with the hopes of helping France reach the levels of bureaucracy digitization of Estonia.

Iโ€™m close to launching, ironing the last details and preparing my marketing / launch plan.

Hi, Iโ€™ve been following IH for quite some time but I was only consuming it. I decided to change it, so I am here! :)
Something about me: I am software developer, doing mostly iOS work. In spare time I am reading books and creating small projects. Lately I decided to begin creating my own content instead of just consuming one. My main goal for this area is creating my own blog and see how I like doing it. I would like to share my knowledge about software development.
I guess, thats it for now :) Looking forward to join community and share my experience with you, possibly help where I can

Hello, my name is Dayton. I am a USA based web developer interested in creating a software startup. I am currently in the process of searching for and validating product ideas. I am early in my journey and excited to learn.

  20. 1

Hello World, I like listening to Indie Hackers Podcast. I'm a python developer and my goal for 2020 is to learn how to create end-to-end software for providing online content. I have a few ideas but I'm still thinking of which of them to implement. Like, an advice blog where you get a random blog of advice with a fun story. The idea is to simplify and explain complex stuff. Ideas are still vague but let's do it.

Hi, I am a digital entrepreneur from Berlin! Will launch a new indie product in the next 2-3 months. Looking forward to exchange ideas and feedback in this community.

  22. 1

    Hi,

    Joining with a split interest,

I am a hobbyist developer and an entrepreneur at heart (currently employed). I love learning new things and I hope to find ideas, cool services and learnings in this group.

In my current role at a translation/content provider I am looking to develop a better understanding of how NLP and ML/AI can provide new ways of doing text content analysis. I am looking for services and ideas that go beyond semantics and basic QA, aiming for tools that can help optimise our customers content and online businesses.

  23. 1

I am a newbie and I found this site from a YouTube video. Love Software Engineering and Just wanted to learn something new and improve myself :)

  24. 1

Hi everybody! I'm a recent graduate with a passion for UX Research, specifically focused on exploring how we can leverage technology and psychology to improve access to mental health resources, treatment, and support. Since COVID, I've taken this opportunity to build and hone my skills by leading multiple independent research projects. I'm hoping that building my network of passionate and more experienced peers will give me some great insight into the tech/business world.

Don't be shy and say hi!

Nice to be here, and will allow myself grow with the lovely energy and co-friends in here.
    much loves

  28. 1

Hi everyone, I am following your IH adventures for many months, so today I have finally decided to go further. I have been collecting ideas since years, but I haven't found the time/way to implement them into products. What do you suggest me to start? How can I validate my ideas without losing time in building something with no value?

  29. 1

Hey Everyone! Been following this site for a while to get a feel for it and decided it was time to start contributing.

I have had 3 SAAS products, the first cost ยฃ20k of my own money, as well as countless hours of my time, but it's never took off and I never made a penny.

My second venture earns me ยฃ20k a month through recurring revenue, but it's wayyy too complex and is a burden on support.

Currently about to launch my next product which takes everything I've learned and applies it to a much simpler project.

Looking forward to getting involved here!

  30. 1

    Greetings all-

My name is Daniel Max and I'm looking forward to inspiration, motivation and path to helping others. I currently manage software engineers in my daytime job and coach agile teams within the company. I own and operate baklava.com but feel that there is something more exciting out there for me to do in addition.

I'm based in the United States and have a diverse background in technology, broadcasting and strategic planning. Happy to be here!!

  31. 1

I am based in Liverpool, UK. However, my small team is virtual and spread across the globe from LA to Ukraine.

I run a company providing editing to writers, agents, and publishers. Its called bubblecow.com. We've been running since 2008.

I have a few side gigs on the go.

ProActiveWriter.com is a community for writers. Currently have about 250 members. This site is still very new, and it is very much in the product fit stage.

I also run a company called EndlessKnotGames.com. This is focused on the tabletop RPG space (think D&D). Again, this is in the early stages. Still not sure where this will go in the long term. However, it is a growing space.

  32. 1

Hi, my name is David and this year I managed to get my first app in Google Play and App Store: https://d17o.com/lddr/

It's a 100% side project where, despite having previous programming experience, I have had the chance the learn a bunch of new, quite unrelated tools, and just recently I have started to get my hands dirty with how to promote it, as this is a completely new field for me. Looking forward to get some inspiration and tips from you :)

  33. 1

Hey indie hackers! I'm Kristers from Riga, Latvia. I've been working on mobile & tech products since I started programming at the age of 12. It's been over 10 years now and I have gone through different phases, environments, roles and situations - freelance, founded startups, raised capital, failed startups, created small apps, worked at different companies. But after a big reflection recently I have decided that being an indie developer is the most appealing to me and I want to put all of my focus on making that a reality.

Thank you for reading, hope to post my first project soon and get your feedback ๐Ÿ™ƒ.

I just found this community, hope to learn from this community!

  61. 1

Hello everyone, I'm a 25 years old entrepreneur with a long history of failed business that have taught me so much. Each of my failed ventures was closer and closer to success so I'm eager to help others not commit my same mistakes, and to be helped by others as well so I can bring something useful for the world community.

Right now I'm travelling the world (Europe as of now) after having been in lockdown in Italy for far too long. I take this as a path to clear my mind and reset before going again hard into my next venture. And it's been a blast, getting to know so many people so many different countries!

    Looking forward.

Hi guys I found this community from producthunt, and since I was always been interested in starting a side project, it was really inspiring to see people here challenging to their own goals. I was just browsing some topics before, but I decided to sign up and commit more to my goal as well. I'm now working in a consumer electronics company in Japan as a business designer, looking forward to sharing opinions and experiences!

Hi everyone, I've been listening to the IH podcast for quite a while now. I'm in a slightly different position than most probably are here, where I actually love my job and what I do. But I'm also very active on nights and weekends tinkering on my own personal projects. Most of these have been intended for my own use, but IH made me realize that if I find these useful chances are someone else will too. I just published my first app to the play store and looking to add more soon. Excited to see what everyone is working on!

I just found out about this community from a youtube video which recommended 10 useful websites for developers, and honestly, i'm quite hopeful about it.
I'm looking forward to help out the community as much as i can:)

    Hi there :)

I launched 'Work is Where the Home is' in September. It's for remote workers who are curious about relocating to Europe. Every other Tuesday, I send out a newsletter interviewing tastemakers, adventurers and wild at hearts who have chosen to relocate to Europe to live and work remotely. Unlike a lot of newsletters, I use Instagram as my primary funnel (atm). Longer term, I will be building out my offering to more than just a newsletter. IRL I head up Product Marketing for a tech company.

    Hi Indie Hackers family :D
Iโ€™m 25, from Turin (Italy). I worked as a freelancer but tired I moved in a Startup Studio. Here I'm working in a really fast environment where we develop 2-3 products per year. Iโ€˜m managing all the digital part but I want to become the product manager. In the meantime Iโ€™m starting with my mate an open source startup project. In our mind it's a revolution for the italian startup market. I hope to find and give great contents. Ah, I'm addicted to Social Innovation. Brofist!

    Hi everyone!

I'm Carl. I've been programming for quite a few years and I still love to learn new skills. I've recently started blogging about php, laravel, javascript, vue, aws and so on.

I'm here to meet like-minded people, make connections and maybe share some of my content. In the future, I'll be working on a few side projects and would love to be able to share them with the community.

Feel free to say hi on Twitter

    Hello!

I'll try to keep this brief and to the point.

    A little about me:
My e-commerce company of ~9 years with ~$10M annual sales was very recently acquired. The success was achieved by an unprecedented 90%+ automation rate, which translated into an extremely low overheard expenses and labor costs. My sabbatical there as the CEO were some of the most demanding times of my life yet some of the most rewarding. The income aspect aside, I got to spend my minimum 10,000 hours in this field (I guess it is way more), which helped to gain valuable, boots-on-the-ground experience as well as a niche knowledge and skillset in the e-commerce, drop-ship, and online sales industries.

I am now exploring options to develop and push various ideas I have captured throughout a decade in this field to the market in the form of a toolkit package SaaS product or single branded services. My educational background is in Computer Science and a Master of Business Administration. I understand code but not a coder.

Enough about me! Here is why I am here:

I am ๐Ÿ‘‰ actively seeking a full-stack developer ๐Ÿ‘ˆ either for hire or for a potential partnership on these projects.
I can partner with you on your ongoing project if I can be of added value. (Mentorship, Biz Dev, Automation, Branding and Marketing)
Investing in your current solid project. (Funding limited to the USA, Full due-diligence required)
I am not looking for funding or additional biz dev/marketing help at the moment and currently focused on the above mentioned only.

Contact me, let's chat! This could be the start of something beautiful.

Hi my name is C.W. I started my career in San Francisco at Salesforce.com in 2007. I worked in solar, cannabis and most recently as the second contractor for a start-up in Oakland. In the last six months my world maybe like yours, has been turned upside down. I was planning to take a day job and start the journey to code nights and weekends. Instead I have been teaching myself since March almost every day. I started this journey a year ago lightly, exploring to see if I really like it and I am in. I missed the problem solving part of my brain. I know the job market is going to be tricky right now, however, I love writing code and designing UI. With my sales and start-up experience I have no issues communicating and working independently. I am looking forward to my first job.

Hi everyone, good evening. I am Adesanya Gbenga from Nigeria. I am a newbie in the world of web development. However, I have a burning desire to become a Full Stack Developer regardless of what it will take. To this end, I bought some courses on Udemy. And my desire to become a Full Stack Developer was further fanned by Adrian Twarog on YouTube when he shared a video of what it will take to become one. He was the one that recommended this website for the viewers of one of his videos. So, I decided to join this community so that I can stay motivated and continuously learn from you guys. Thank you.

    Hey everyone!
My name is Veiko and I am eager to get feedback from people who are doing product development in Amazon. Me and my partner just finished a first version of our product and the basic idea is that you can easily go and analyse reviews of your competitors in order to improve your own product.
I hope to help a lot of sellers with this and would be grateful for any feedback I can get.

    Hi team,

I run Here To Travel at heretotravel.com. We publish free travel guides for less explored destinations. I'm excited to delve into the wealth of information already on here and explore new ways to monitise our content and brand.

We're already making extensive use of affiliate marketing but not earning much. The areas we're looking to move into are building an email list (we have a great idea for this), selling products (not sure what yet) and memberships (looked into this and slightly overwhelmed by the number of competing services out there - how do you choose?)

Looking forward to getting to know some of you.

Hi! I've been following IH for a while, gathering knowledge and I've finally decided to join this community :) I'm in my last year of university, working part-time as a software engineer. I plan to build a side project and turn it into a profitable business :)

    Hi Everyone,
I just found out about this community by accident and I am glad I found it.
I am from Europe and I wanna start a few side projects to spark my interest in programming again and build cool and interesting things along the way.

I look forward to be a part of this community and learn and give back to this community in some way.

I wish you all a great day/night and stay safe.

I just found out IndieHackers.. This was the network I was trying to achieve using Twitter, but gush, thx for creating this community!! In 2021 I will be working to create multiple new startups indie way, so I am really happy to be a part of the community for learning, helping others, encouraging each other to do more..

Recently stumbled upon to this community. I am working on a side project for over a year with significant progress. I am not sure if I want to take it to the next level. If yes, I don't know how to. I found this community to be a perfect place to start.

Hey everyone! A colleague mentioned IH and I had to check it out. We're constantly running ideas past people and IH seems like a solid community for that purpose.

I'm a co-founder of a startup studio and we're working on a product called Clearcut to help founders + product folk generate meaningful user feedback to reach product-market fit faster.

We've been building the product for the last couple months and are just now getting early user feedback, tweaking marketing, etc. It's fun meta work because we're focused on PMF for a product that helps others reach PMF. If anyone is interested, check it out at www.useclearcut.com โ€” we'd love your feedback!

  102. 1

An esteemed friend who's a bit on the unconventional side mentioned indiehackers today and it sounds like just the place for me! I'm a software engineer taking a year off to quietly build a "kinder, gentler online community" with ideas from the MMORPG gaming world mixed with collaborative team tools. Imagine Zoom mixed with Trello and Animal Crossing and you'll probably have some fun ideas we can talk about :)

  103. 1

Hi Indie Hackers! I knew of this group, but never checked it out. I just finished a 30 day NoCode Hackathon with MakerPad and looking into continuing my project.

I am an experience designer day to day, but love the intersection of product, design, and development so I try and work on side projects around those on my own. Looking forward to meeting/chatting people on here!

Hi all, I'm Felix, a 15-year-old Singaporean, I'm having trouble finding people to collaborate with. I heard about this community from a Spotify podcast and I hope to learn and benefit from this :) Since there are just a few more months reminding for this year. My goal for next year is to master native development and the more lower level programming languages like C, and C++. I not only want to improve my technical skills here, I also want to improve myself and my leadership aswell!

With that fantastic attitude, I have no doubt you will!

  106. 1

Hey all people, its great to connect with you all. When you are at the end of road, you need a leap of faith & I would say I just took that plunge here, hope to see the work of my commitment come true soon.

Hello. I landed on this planet in the mid-70s and ended up settling here. For the past 20 years I have been working in the field of Graphic Design, in all its aspects. As the year 2020 has been disconcerting at various levels, I thought it was better to start thinking about the best way to embody the ideas and achievements that I am postponing, to enter 2021 with something concrete and different. So... I'm here to learn. To discover.

Hi! I am Karla and I am part or RenterBuyer. I loved to read all your introductions! Hi everyone, I'm Hari!

I came across IH almost by accident but it seems like a great community and can't wait to dive in :)

I've recently founded a new online learning platform called Pyxium, which turns your learning into currency you can use in our marketplace.

Still very early stage and not anywhere near sustainable revenue generation yet, so looking forward to learning from people that have taken idea and MVP successfully through to sustained business.

And looking forward to hearing what inspirational stuff everybody's getting up to!

  119. 1

    Hi people!

I'm reading through the website and the newsletter for about a month by now and decided is a moment to write the first message. First of all, it's a great community with a lot of useful resources. Thanks to organizers for putting this project together and to participants for being here for each other.

Few words about me and my goals. Spent last 10 years in IT industry working as an Engeneer, Tutor, Manager and Product Owner.
In December 2019 I have kick-started a pet project. It's a website with useful tools for people who like to sing. I'm looking for help, advice and inspiration on making this project a financial success. The goal is by the EOY to make the website self-sustainable and build a business development plan for 2021.

In return I will try to do my best by contributing to the community with my knowledge and experience.

    Good day everyone.

    Services :-
All kind of design services like application design, landing page, emailers, animated videos, flyers, branding, etc.
    Monthly Plan - $199/month

Please help me out here -

    1. Is this monthly plan is good to go?
    2. Should I focus to SaaS companies only or to all companies?

Hi everyone, been following indiehackers on twitter for quite sometime. Lots of people on my TL swear by it. Have a few ideas, and I think now would be a good time to start with a side project. I hope to contribute to this community as well as learn from you guys!

  128. 1

    Hello,

I recently found out about the Indie Hackers site and it's really interesting that we can share our experiences and commit to goals so that we can see that other people are encountering the same initial hurdles as me, so I'm glad to be part of this community.

Also, I'm currently working on a single page application (SPA) made with React/Redux and Express.js and I would like to set a goal to complete it by the end of November 2020.

To give additional details regarding this project, it's an open source budget tracking application (https://github.com/jfmainville/budgetly) and I don't intend to sell this product at the moment as it's quite simple, but I want to use it as template for another project that I have in mind that I would like to bring to market.

Finally, I think it would be a great learning experience if other people would be interested in contributing to this open source project (I created the work breakdown in the GitHub Issues for the tasks that are left to complete) and I have completed the base design of the app in Figma.

    Thanks!

    Hey Guys,
Do you know that in the United States your credit score can affect your insurance rate. Insurance companies think your credit score reflects the risks involved
In insuring you. This is important because insurance is expensive and a bad credit score could increase my insurance premiums dramatically.
I want to thank Bob for Referring me to this credit expert that has helped me clean up my credit. He removed the negatives on my credit and increased
my score to 790 on all credit bureaus. Now I have finally gotten the loan. I needed to buy my dream car with my new. Credit .

Hello y'all this site came up in my actual google news feed & I usually don't sign up. I am a NY real estate broker w 15 years exp. I s0tarted really young and considering starting up a Brokerage or smarthome business.

I enjoy my "drunken rookie hacker nights" as my girl calls them. I somehow gained free admin access to all google cloud and a monetized youtube channel by accident, my 250+ workout playlists I made for myself were apparently we're being viewed etc.

I have no idea what I'm doing or what to do now so suggestions are much appreciated, Thank you very much.

    Shep
