Welcome, introduce yourself! (Week of Sep 20th)

Rosie here -- the Indie Hackers community manager. Welcome! ๐Ÿ‘‹

This short guide is meant to help you get the most out of Indie Hackers.

First, introduce yourself!

Indie Hackers is a community of people helping each other build profitable businesses and side projects. The key word here is "community." Don't be shy!

For starters, take a second to introduce yourself and share your goals in the comments below. ๐Ÿ‘‡

Just say a few words about who you are, why you're here, and what you hope to accomplish or learn in 2020.

Take a moment to say hello to someone else as well!

Dive into learning.

We've interviewed hundreds of successful indie hackers. I recommend reading a few of their stories. It's a great way to get an overview of what's possible.

@csallen also puts out podcast episodes if reading isn't your thing!

Next, get started!

There's no time like the present. Check out the "Start Here" page for a list of practical steps and articles that can help you take action.

Not only will it help you get started, but it should also introduce you to some of the best parts of the Indie Hackers community.

This is just the tip of the iceberg! If you're ever feeling lost or confused, post in the Meta group or tag me (@rosiesherry) in any comment or post.

Don't forget to introduce yourself and say hi to someone else below! ๐Ÿค—

Hi Guys, im founder of TrainingSet.AI AI Annotation Platform and with great effort we finally launched it. First of all will be great to hear feedback from other entrepreneurs and startup founders about the process and if you like the product we have launch or not! Thanks

    1. 1

Helpful platform @TrainingSetAI. Lots of organisations are reinventing the wheel when it comes to configuration, version control and annotation of training models.

Great to see your platform tackling these friction points. I look forward to seeing it progress.

      1. 2

Thanks Jay, will be great to hear your feedback on the platform if you have some time, is already live on Trainingset.ai (feel free to contact us for any other communication way)

Serial enterpreneur here. Bulit and ran quite a few online ventures over 20 years with 75% failiure rate. Managed to grow two ecommerce startups to 7 digit yearly revenue and still running one of them. Great platform and happy to be a part of it. Not sure how I managed to miss it all this time.

    1. 1

I'd say that's a 25% success rate @Randomine which is pretty impressive. Well done!

Same as yourself, totally missed this community until now.

      1. 1

This is really weird. It is hard to believe but ravebox.com is one of our pet projects. I am sure that you know this domain name :)

        1. 1

Ok, that is super weird. The odds of this comment thread happening are incredibly low.

I like what you're doing with RaveBOX btw :)

    Hi,

I am Adam. I am a deep learning engineer / tinkerer and am working on a new way of editing photography with intermediate shippables. I tend to build things I am curious about technologically, and then find use cases for the technology. Aiming to find a process that lets me satisfy this, whilst also building out my independent revenue streams.

I have been lurking IH since before the stripe acquisition and decided to finally lean in and share.

    Hey Guys,

I'm the founder of Renetal.com (digitizing business operations of rental companies), it's a B2B SaaS product.

Currently, we are in the MVP stage. Got badly impacted because the early adopters closed their outlets because of Covid-19, but now things are slowly coming back - I hope it gets normal soon so that we continue to get more feedback and learn from their usage.

Please ask questions if you have and I will be happy to answer. Feedback and advice will be very helpful in this lonely and frustrating journey.

Hi everyone, I am Samuel and I am from Lagos, Nigeria. My goal for 2020 is to improve my skills as a software developer and also starting my software agency which I have made plans for all this while but never got to start. I have achieved a bit of my goal in terms of being a better developer, my Github has been very active unlike it used to. But I am yet to achieve kick starting my software development agency, I have discussed the idea with a few friends and they would love to get on board with me, I'm anxious about starting and getting thrown into the chaos of managing several projects and keeping my life balanced.

Hi Guys!, I'm a customer/user researcher based in Sรฃo Paulo (Brazil).
After 10+ years working with corporate, I realized I have a lot more fun helping indie founders figure out what people need and how to give it to them.

I'm a consultant and run training on user research in Brazil (hopefully bringing it online soon, with the help of this awesome community) mentor solo founders, and try to give back by doing pro-bono mentoring for social impact startups (most recently through the Yunus Social Business accelerators).

Looking forward to contributing as much as I can!

    Hi Everyone.

I am from Bangladesh. I am out for work from 8am till 9pm Sunday to Thursday. I work at a bank and its just pure hell. Lunch is only 15 minutes and that too at 4:30pm, one bathroom break, continous multitasking service etc. I have a BS in Economics and an MBA but no training in any IT fields.

I need the Friday to recuperate and catch up on chores. So I am thinking of starting a side hustle during the 10 hours I have to spare on Saturday. I was thinking of building a side hustle that will run mostly automatic after it is built (like some sweatystartups). I have been thinking about this for 2 years now but none of the ideas seem to be viable. It seems IT side hustles require a lot of learning and that takes 700 or so hours, which at 10 hours a week would take an impractically very long time.

That's why I am here. To talk about and get suggestions regarding what side hustle to start.

    Thanks everyone!

Time to take action and become active decision-makers for more self-determination, more / better democracy and to solve the issues listed in SDGs. Changes need decisions.
    Happy to discuss!

I would love to interact with people and help in whatever ways I can!

Currently, I have started a blog to share my learnings and experiences - stackdev.xyz. Feel free to critique/suggest topics.

Here at Adam skincare (ASC), we like to keep it simple. Our philosophy makes for a straightforward and easy-to-follow skin care regimen. So what is essential? Three things: Exfoliating dead skin cells, cleansing and hydration.

A few facts about mensโ€™ skin: itโ€™s thicker, itโ€™s tougher, itโ€™s oilier, it has larger pores and follicle sizes. Therefore, while some products work well for both men and women, itโ€™s clear that men just have different skins with different needs. This is where we come in. If the focus is to have healthy and visually appealing skin, then it imperative to ensure a thorough cleansing of the fore layer of the skin and provide it with the nourishment and extra moisture it needs to keep it from drying.

ASC range of products is Unique. Not only does it cater to the needs that most men have in their skin, but it does so with safety in mind. No overwhelming fragrance, no kitschy packaging, and free of over 1500 toxic or potentially harmful ingredients.

Taking care of your skin is not luxury its just self-respect. ASC really is the answer to every guyโ€™s need for safe and high performing Organic products.

    Proudly African.

I left the corporate world to start a freelancing platform that would allow tech and digital marketing freelancers to meet each other, form teams, and work on jobs together. It didnโ€™t work out because of the sheer volume of competition and COVID-19. However, I would still like to find ways to help remote freelancers find work. Iโ€™m not an expert in 1 particular areas, but I know a decent amount about javascript web development (node.js), digital marketing, banking + finance, machine learning, and management.

  152. 1

Hi Indiehackers, I'm Anna from Moqod.

I'm here for inspiration, networking and ideas sharing in regard of product launch from marketing perspective.

  153. 1

    Hi everyone ๐Ÿ‘‹

I'm Felix and I work as a web developer in Germany. I haven't started anything yet, but I'm interested in starting a profitable side-project. I also write blog posts about frontend programming on my personal site (felixgerschau.com).

My impression is that building an audience is key to having a successful product. Since I'm writing on my blog about programming, I wonder how much that limits me to create something tailored for programmers. Would I be stupid to target another audience?

    1. 1

IMHO: be more specific rather than broad. Iโ€™m assuming you write good content, so the second thing is having a good content distribution strategy. Google search has become very tough over the last years because of the sheer volume of content being produced. If you want to use that in your strategy, I would try to find topics that have the highest ratio of searches and lowest level of competition.

      1. 1

Thanks for your input! In my field, I feel like I have a shot at getting some traction so I'll stick with that for now

        1. 2

Yeah, Iโ€™m saying to stick within your field, but when you start writing the specific topics, I would focus on topics that have a high search/competition ratio. If you focus on cooking for example, โ€œDIY Yakitori Style Grill Buildโ€ might be an area that people are searching for but nobody is talking about. Writing about that specific topic for 1 blog post (if written well) might end up driving a lot of traffic to your site.

I run a digital agency Web Ascender and have a SaaS company Boast.io
We've been bootstrapping Boast for awhile and finally got to the point where it makes sense to reinvest and grow the business. I'll be involved with Indie Hackers to learn more about other people's stories and share some of my own experience with others.

  168. 1

Hello, I purchased a dieing software company that was profitable at one point and I think it can be again. What it needs is a redev, but I just have not been able to get the money together to hire a developer for doing it. I have a resource, but I do not have the money to get him started. This product has sales traction, not great but it has it. I am lost and need a compass.
    Thanks Chris

    1. 1

Some initial advice that I could give you.
I made a rule not to reinvest in a redevelopment or an evolution of our MVP until it reached a certain level of traction or product market fit. We would take care of minor enhancements to fit the market but committed to not rewriting the app or building exactly what it needed to be until we could market and sell it enough for it to fund itself.

If the product has a niche, and you can't market and sell to that niche then having a better product won't necessarily help. Assuming your product isn't absolutely terrible, you should be able to market and sell it if it fills a need. Do that until you can get to the point to reinvest that money back into the redevelopment.

Sucks, but better than dropping tons of money on a redevelopment just to be hitting the same sales and marketing wall.

      Good luck!

      1. 1

Thanks for the advice, the thing is that the product ManagePro has been fully developed and sold since 1992.

At one point revenue from sales of the software and consulting were upwards of 1 million per year. What happened is the former owner never diversified his sales, he went looking for a niche market, and also kept staying with the original sales model of only selling to CEO's and such.

I have a different sales model, but I also know that this product needs a refresh.

Once my product page gets approved, you can look at that, or you can contact me directly and I would love to tell you more.

        1. 1

AHH! Ok, wow that is some software staying power.
If it's been worked on, supported, improved since 1992?! You've convinced me, it probably needs a rewrite ;)

Hope there is still an active market for your product and that you can retain your existing book of business even with a major overhaul like that.

I've been developing software for 20 years, run a digital agency where we develop software - although we're not taking on any new clients right now because we've been focusing on our own product www.boast.io

But, if you ever need an ear or an outsider to provide a thought or opinion feel free to reach out . Always willing to help out when I can.

          1. 1

Thanks, yes, I have big plans for it. I looked at your site, that looks very interesting.

Hey there, my name is Steve and I created Just Dunning, a failed payment and subscription recovery service for Stripe users. I'm also a Ruby on Developer and love discovering new and easier ways to do things with it.

    1. 2

Awesome! I hate failed Stripe payments. (incorrect zip code) (card declined) etc. Usually have to go in there and whitelist them or do minor tweaks. Have built a handful of dunning features directly in our app but this is definitely an area that is annoying. Good luck with you app. I'm also a Rails developer!

      1. 1

Nice dude. Yeah itโ€™s been a lot of fun. I can see how it could get annoying though. Had some edge cases I didnโ€™t initially think about earlier on but that helped hone my Stripe connect debugging process. If you ever need a hand or havenโ€™t used things like the Stripe CLI to test your stuff let me know. Iโ€™d be happy to hop on a zoom or google meet.

        1. 1

No I have not worked with the Stripe CLI. I just tend to code to API and manage the callbacks. We've had one issue recently where same user, same card for months, hasn't moved - and it was still kicking out zip code issues. Had to go whitelist it, then it would charge. Pretty annoying.

Currently using a hybrid of our own and baremetrics for dunning in Boast.io; although, we've been working on a major version update and have been baking in more features directly.

Says you're in West Palm - I spend a bit of the winter in St. Pete; heading down there in about 4 weeks. Good luck with justdunning!

          1. 1

I enjoy Saint Pete. I lived in South Tampa for a while when I was in the Air Force. Our favorite beach over there is pass a grille.

            1. 1

Yes that beach and area is great.

I have a pretty good view of MCF approaches from the south, and love watching those KC-135 fly in. My old flight instructor is down there a couple times a year with the national guard flying the A10. Great area for aviation and the tech scene seems to be growing a bit.

              1. 2

Yeah man. I was a boom operator on the 135s for 8 years. Grand Forks then MacDill.

                1. 1

Wow, I would say "how fun" but I'm guessing it is like most jobs where it becomes a bit of a grind.
                  But, aviation is awesome.

                  1. 2

Yeah was fun for a little bit. But being away from the family 270ish days a year with a lot of that stuff being short notice kinda sucks. Now is polar opposite. I love it.

Hi, everyone! Iโ€™m a developer of more years than I should admit to, having started my development career (kind of) getting paid to do small things for companies in 68K on the Amiga when I was in high school.

I work mostly in Java on the backend with very large systems. Meat and potatoes stuff with a limited chance for any real flair. Iโ€™m currently trying to find something new, and maybe use some different technologies to add a little extra spark to what is both my hobby and my living. Perhaps even get some interesting chat along the way, and actually finish one of the projects I start on! :)

    Nice to meet you.

We are RecoMind https://recomind.io, a personalization SaaS for retailers. Our product increases the conversion of an e-commerce using AI Recommendations.

We have been running for a long time, we changed our brand recently as well as the business model, we offer a commission-based service, there is no upfront investment, we only get a small fee when we get a sale to our customers.

Any advice or help would be really appreciated.

    Hi everyone,

I am an AI and backend developer. I am struggling to form good habits and keep a routine. The research says that external accountability helps a lot, so I just want to test this idea. I have put a LP https://ariseawake.life/ in which you can enter which habit you intend to form and be accountable to us. We will call you regularly at at chosen time to check your status.

Hi everyone! I am building an event monitoring product for WordPress called Logtivity.io. You can track important actions such as Admin Created, Plugin Updated and more, set up alerts for key actions you need to keep an eye on and drill down on the data with filtering and charts. I currently have a small handful of users beta testing and one paid customer. Looking for feedback!
    Ralph

    1. 1

Cool, what size of a site do you think you need to be to need to worry about this level of logging or detail? Is this for all WordPress users or specific people need this for a reason?

      good luck!

      1. 1

Thanks! Good question, I think this is quite niche and more helpful to companies that have many employees logging into their WordPress sites, making changes. This can help protected them from ex-employees logging in when they shouldn't or trace issues with site changes.

Another example would be with a membership site, a site owner may want to record when a membership is created/cancelled and track if they interact with their platform and what features. This would be helpful with disputes for example if a customer tries to do a chargeback.

  203. 1

    Hi Everyone,

I am building a platform where developers & students can get help for the open source framework with SLA's feature. Which is more than Q & A sites. We have already launched the product and see positive response from developers community.

  204. 1

Hi everyone. I am building a platform that helps people transform their mindset on how they see stress. People with a positive mindset on stress statistically live 8 years longer than people who don't. There is a lot of research/methods that have been identified recently and I find it super exciting to get a product out based on this knowledge.

    1. 1

      Sounds great.
One thing I've learned over the years is just how stress affects people differently. There are some people who visually get stressed, feel sick, and others who think they can power through it and don't really show the signs. However, it's still there, it's still wearing on you in the background and it's important to acknowledge and address the different stressors in our life. Look forward to seeing what you build!

      1. 1

That is true. Stress comes from different verticals: money, fear about the future, pain, being old, stress at work, stress @ family. The overall understanding though is that stress is negative. But that is just a mindset thing. What if you could flip stress into something you can strive on and use. Latest research has proven, that mindset interventions are powerful tweaks to do just that. It's fascinating how these simple methods really have an impact on people.

        1. 1

I have been able to manage mine luckily. However at one point it ruled me. I had bad hand and wrist RSI. Wasn't until I really understood the mind body connection that I was able to work past that. Wasn't really physical in nature... your mind has ways of tricking you and getting what it wants. This was the first book I read on it:
https://www.amazon.com/Healing-Back-Pain-Mind-Body-Connection/dp/0446557684 there are now lots of other books proving your mind is a childish asshole and will bring you pain if it thinks it will help get what it wants. :)

Hit me up when you blog, tweet, publish or ship something!

          1. 1

            Ryan,

Yeah. It's crazy how the mind and body are connected. Check out Alia Crum's research with milkshakes. You will love that insight.

            Take care and speak soon,
            George

            1. 1

              Damn that's interesting.
And now I want a milkshake.

    2. 1

This sounds awesome! I think this is something that affects so many people at some point in their life, including myself. How far down the road are you with the product?

      1. 1

It does. I do the Q&A's personally and see all the stress people are dealing with. It's mind-blowing and actually pretty straightforward to tweak. We set out to build tapouts to have an impact on peoples lives. Currently, we are running sessions through 3rd party platforms but will start developing our platform soon, so we can be more effective in applying our method.
