Welcome to Indie Hackers! 👋 (Week of Dec 29th)

Rosie here -- the Indie Hackers community manager. Welcome! 👋

This short guide is meant to help you get the most out of Indie Hackers.

First, introduce yourself!

Indie Hackers is a community for people building profitable Internet businesses. The key word here is "community" — to get the most out of IH, you'll need to speak with and learn from other IHers. Don't be shy!

For starters, take a second to share your goals in the comments below.

Just say a few words about who you are and why you're here. What do you hope to accomplish or learn in 2020?

I encourage you to respond to others as well.

Dive into learning.

We've interviewed hundreds of successful indie hackers. I recommend starting by reading a few of their stories. It's a great way to get an overview of what's possible and the huge variety of paths that different people take.

(@csallen also puts out podcast episodes if reading isn't your thing.)

Every founder begins with a different level of knowledge, but learning never ends. It's good to do a little bit of reading upfront, but don't get stuck in a pure learning phase for too long and let that hold you back!

If you're ever feeling lost or confused, post in the Meta group or tag me (@rosiesherry) in any comment or post.

Don't forget to share your goals below! 🤗

It's a new year (and a new decade, depending on who you ask). I'd really like to give it a "college try" this year to see if I can get my app and/or business idea off the ground. I've been teaching myself what I can about coding and software development, but realize I've got a long way to go. Hoping to meet and network with others that might provide advice or guidance, and simply hope to be able to return the favor at some point in the future. Best of luck out there! - Jason

    Hello Rosie

I was contracting as a developer, mostly, react/redux/graphq, postgresql, etc.
Then travelled to break the rut. Later with great passion, began pursuing a travel bag project never done before. It required a lot more research than i'd bargained for. The best langs & tools for its use case. e.g. erlang, elixir, pyhton, purescript, mobile, haskell, docker, serverless, machine learning, smart contract, solidity, embedded iot, ai, robotics, etc, i wont bore you.
Eventually discovered(as passion calmed) theres a lot of shit to investigate before being able to dig into the chosen tech. Current goal is to start income flowing again without corporate or company placement. Idea is to independently remote work for small/medium clients
When ready, start on a travel bag prototype mvp & look into additional less demanding money making options.
The baggage project is desirable as its still not been done by anyone out there.
If pulled off it would have an impact on society as it has multiple uses.
Patience may payoff i dont know?

    1. 1

      Hi Rosie,
obviously cant go into the details as its to become work in progress in due course.

I had the idea mid 2017 and to date its not been done. At the time i had no idea how i could do it. It will involve a micro-controller with linux, DL, python, and a number of other tech.

I would say the biggest difference is in the design. I'm shocked & glad no one thought of it 2 years on. Maybe indiehackers could be of some help in the short or long term. One way to find out.

    2. 1

Curious to hear about the travel bag. I recall seeing various types over the years, many via Kickstarter, what makes yours different?

  37. 1

Hi @rosiesherry Thanks for the introduction. This is Ankur Vaid from India, Mumbai. I'm a non tech founder. Here to learn, network, ideate and maybe even connect with potential CoFounders & resources.

Be sure to check out our No Code group!

  38. 1

Hi Rosie, I just found you guys through watching a YouTube video from channel: code drip.

I just left, hmm, more like got let go 😃, my job and don't feel like going to another one right away. I would like to take sometime to learn how to make my own work/business/passion.

I am a programmer, and research scientist but lately more toward low level programming (HW). So something has been missing in my professional life for the past three years and I am trying to get it back.
I am using C/C++ mainly, but know BASH, and to a lesser degree TCL, Python, Perl, and Java.

I want to learn few new things and be able to make a change and impact in my life and possibly others.

    1. 1

Hopefully you can make the best of your 'time off'. How long do you have until you need to start making money again?

  39. 1

Here to learn more about running a business and fulfilling customer needs. I can build the products, store fronts, etc but I don’t know how to market what I create or determine what a customer would like.

  40. 1

I'm working on a few ideas/products in the real estate world - commercial-focused as well as more general back-office ideas. If you are in the space I'd love to talk more!

I've also done the VC-startup game if you are looking for a sounding board or advice.

    1. 1

What's your experience in the VC-startup game?

  41. 1

Hi, I'm a retired professional poker player starting a new life. I've spent the last 4 years learning fullstack webdevelopment after quitting poker. I got hired this year for a developer job in a small but great company. But this only the next step of my journey ;)

I'm working on the side on a project which supports e-sport competitors.
Let's see what happens in the next 4 years......

  42. 1

Hey everyone. I just want to read some great articles!
