Welcome to Indie Hackers! (Week of Mar 28th)

Channing here from Indie Hackers. Welcome! 👋

Here's how to get the most out your time here.

Make the community a better place

Indie Hackers is for connecting with like-minded people who want to build profitable online businesses.

To get the most out of the community, try helping to make it a better place. You can do that by starting and participating in interesting discussions.

If you start by giving, the community is designed to reward you in return.

How to start discussions

Head over to the home page and click the "New Post" button.

If there's something on your mind that you think will get people talking, simply type it out. The shorter the better. It helps if you ask a clear question in the title, or if you express your opinion.

Alternatively, if you read something elsewhere on the internet, you can start a discussion around that, too. Try submitting it as a link post. Indie hackers love discovering interesting new articles.

Good luck!

This is just the tip of the iceberg. If you need help submitting your first link post or starting your first discussion, let me know in the comments below.

Otherwise, I'm excited to see you the forum! Feel free to introduce yourself to everyone below. 🤗

    Hi Allen,
Loved your introduction. It a pleasure to be a part of such a welcoming community. I intend to contribute to this wonderful platform all my musings, content, craft, and anything that will uplift the spirit of the community.

Hi Allen & everyone out there,

I've hit rock bottom. After 4 years in Software Dev what I'm looking for is some inspiration. I can craft. I can analyze. I can understand. I can plan.
What I'm lacking is a reason to get up, an idea where I can put my time to good use, a community where I can help and make a difference.

Hope this is the right place to make the world a better place. One project at a time.
    Greetings from Germany

      Hi @creadisc!

Sounds like you are have an existential crisis which I expect a lot of people are having after 2020 pandemic lifestyle. I just joined IndieHackers myself and I expect this will be a great place for you to get inspiration.

My recommendation - first just pick a fun portfolio project and don't worry about the money potential. Get yourself out of the rut. Once you're in a better mindset then revisit the idea of what you want for your "make-a-difference project".

I made a video about Portfolio Projects which may give you some ideas: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zECN9ijWjmU

And if that doesn't work... I recommend meditation. That worked for me and made a much bigger difference than I had expected.

      Best of luck to you,
      -Alec

        Hi Alec,
thanks a lot, your video really helped. I built a portfolio once but I don't know why I stopped pursuing it.

        1. 2

          Hey @creadisc,

I'm glad my video helped! When your portfolio project is done definitely post it here on indiehackers.com . I've noticed everyone has been very supportive and full of interesting ideas.

Or if you want post your ideas on your portfolio right now. Let's brainstorm!

          -Alec

          1. 1

            Hey Alec,

I'll definitely come back when it materializes.

    2. 2

      Hi creadisc,

How are you doing? That sucks that you're feeling down, and my idea would be join a community, which you seem to already be doing 🤪. Also, therapy is always a whole thing, but a therapy book can be a little nice, plus this one's got some funny stories: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/37570546-maybe-you-should-talk-to-someone

    3. 2

Sorry to hear about your situation, but I can totally relate to the feeling of being able to craft and understand, but wondering what good am I actually doing. There's all these well funded VC startups that basically just burn through capital trying to chase unicorn scale returns for the investors. It's not meaningful work. I have enough morals to never work on something I think is objectively evil, but I feel like so much of the well paying work out there is so BORING. Its not innovative, its just reinventing a wheel that's a slightly different size, or has a slightly different coat of paint on it, and trying to sell it as the next new thing.

      1. 1

So I guess I'm not alone anymore.
As it seems to me, people get depressed whenever they lack a clear goal, a path to it or the necessary tools to pursue that path.
But maybe it's also due to a disconnect between the challenges we find interesting and our actual ability to face them.

Right now my strategy is to focus on the road and the process of learning about all those new technologies that can fundamentally change the way we live, and connecting the dots to find solutions for the ethical and social questions nobody really had answered yet.

I don't know about you, but I'm still trying to work out how my day job is going to fit into all this. And how I could stay financially afloat without it.

Thanks for the warm welcome so far :)

    Hi Allen & Everyone,
Thanks for the welcome. I'm employed as Software Engineering Manager and Product Architect in India. We are working on few complex problems. I feel a mix of joy and fear joining this community. I've been a move buff for a long time. I know a good movie when I see it ( most people do) but not necessarily create one sadly. I would like to make script writing fun and easy.

    Hello!!
    I am a young learner.
I have just taken admission in college in DEC 2020 and I had started exploring new fields from last 12 months
In last 12 months I have started my 2 startups (Ecommerce and agency)not simultaneously(one after other) and they both are failed. I think this is due to lack of experience, feedback and guidance. But I am still not giving up and I am still doing my best to explore and gaining experience. Now I feel more confident and experienced as I learned so much from my failure.
I will try to apply all my learning to help this community and also learn new things and experiences.

Perhaps you are afraid date online because you afraid of fake profiles. But on reliable platforms people come there to find their happiness, and there are no games. Like on Sofia Date. Every lady profile is manually verified, and I am sure I am talking to a real girl. Also, I see many photos from everyday life. https://www.sofiadate.com/single-girls
