We've been using calendar apps wrong. What do you think about this solution?

Hey there!

January 2023 I sat down to a computer and discovered that I've planned a bunch of tasks for the day but that it's also packed with meetings.

Ever been there?

Done a bit of research and - as we thought - it apparently mostly happens because the calendar and to-do list apps don't communicate well. So we decided to put those two together.

The 3 Core benefits of Divity:

(1) Context: Divity adjust the time you have for work that day according to the meetings and events you have. I'd love to put the "damn I can't fit this with all the meetings" in the past

(2) Planning: Divity automatically populates your work day. Divity has Projects. I have one for my day job, one for Divity, school and family. Write ideas and tasks into you projects and Divity puts it in your work block when it's due.

(3) Flexible Habits: We all have regular tasks such as walking the dog or exercising. Divity reschedules your daily habits to ensure you get everything done, even when unexpected events arise.

How is it different than Notion, Jira, Trello, ClickUp and the others? Divity has not only team collaboration features but it also schedules your day. It focuses on keeping everything you do together - work, hobbies, family. Organises everything with you, so you don't have to be worried you forgot about something.

How it is going:

It's been a few moths since we (a team of three) started working on Divity.app. Now we're wrapping up the design (though UI is not yet finished) and will start coding. At the start of summer we plan to have a desktop version finished in an open beta. In the fall the mobile app should come out.

Would love to get your thoughts or questions!

And you can sign-up for the beta here: https://divity.app/?ref=ih

I love this idea! Combining calendar and to-do list apps is a game-changer for productivity. It's fantastic that you've identified the core benefits of Divity and are working towards making it a reality. Your dedication to creating a tool that helps people manage their work, hobbies, and family life is inspiring.

How does Divity ensure seamless integration between calendar and to-do list apps? Can you share some examples of how it has improved productivity for users in their daily lives?

Speaking of the mobile app it has three pages

One that shows you the plan for the day - of course meetings and your regular events are there but you can also create designated work blocks.

Let's say you're in work from 9-17 so you create a work block for your day job. Divity automatically pulls tasks from the second page - which is projects. That's where you keep your ideas and tasks with their due dates.

The third way is a standard calendar view where you can manage your events and get an overview of the month and the upcoming weeks.

We're planning to integrate with not only calendars (like google) but with software for teamwork like Trello or ClickUp so you can have everything in one place.

Before that it'll be best for managing side projects like your own (e.g. personal brand) or for teams that don't yet use another software

Sorry that the reply got so long :). There's just a lot to cover that we're pretty excited to share!

Hey David, I'm Tim, one of the founders of Divity.

Amazing to hear that you like the idea, I also think that the integrations have a huge potential to make Divity your "all-in-one hub", which is also one of our goals.
If you have any ideas for integrations or in general, you can share them on our Discord community, I'd love to see you there. ( divity.app/discord )

    super great idea!
just a suggestion, try introducing gamification concepts in it. will make it more interesting ig

Hey mate! Already thinking about introducing gamification on a similar level Duolingo has it. Badges and ranks but not that the app would rely on it.

It has to be something simple since we need to balance the benefits (motivating people to show up and organize their day) and the problems that come with over-gamification (when the elements distract from the actual use of the app or it becomes the sole reason for opening the app - which would defeat the purpose and the impact)

So as Shivam mentioned we still have some thinking to do :D

Hi Matyas, Not Sure if you have read this book - 'Start Finishing' by Charlie Gilkey. It has a lot of valuable information on project planning and scheduling with the rest of your calendar. Now they went and build an app called Momentum. Which is kind of similar. I believe that will be helpful for anyone building something in this space. DM me if you need the links.
    Cheers,
    Prakash

Hey Prakash! Thanks for letting me know. I wasn't aware of the book although I've heard about Momentum. Would love to know more - DMing you now!

What tech stack are you using? I also want to ship a macOS version for my AI chatbot app for iOS(https://apple.co/40oSG45). I am using flutter but I am confused whether to use it for macOS apps or not.

    1. 1

      Hi Harsh 👋 I'm Shivam.

They are working on the web version in NextJS with its backend in Golang and haven't yet planned for the macOS version. Flutter or swiftUI appKit might be considered.

I haven't used Flutter to build macOS apps but it surely is a good option for Android and ios apps.

I suggest giving it a day and trying converting & compiling your Flutter app into macOS and seeing the result. All the best.

      1. 2

Thanks I tried it but it gave me a lot of errors and warnings so I stopped working on the macOS app.

        1. 2

Yeah, this can happen when compiling for desktop platforms. I don't know whether you have tried it or not but try flutter macos_ui.

You can convert your core business logic of the app as package and create two separate app using those packages, one for macos and other for mobile platforms. It would be more simpler, in my opinion

Regarding the statement that we have been using calendar apps wrong, it is important to understand the context and the reasons behind it. However, in general, the use of technology and applications can vary depending on individual preferences, habits, and needs. Therefore, there is no "one-size-fits-all" solution or approach that works for everyone.

If you have come across a solution that can potentially improve the way we use calendar apps, it is always worth considering its features, benefits, and limitations before implementing it. It might also be helpful to evaluate if the solution aligns with your personal and professional goals and if it can enhance your productivity and efficiency.

Overall, it is always good to be open to new ideas and innovations and to explore different ways of using technology to improve our daily lives.

While it's understandable that individuals may want to increase their online exposure, using ChatGPT solely for self-promotion would not be appropriate, as it could potentially detract from the helpfulness and usefulness of the platform. It's important to approach ChatGPT with the intention of providing value to the community and contributing to meaningful discussions.
