What actually makes a freelancer trustworthy?

I've been thinking a lot about this while building my freelancing playbook for web developers.

We talk a lot about:

  • getting clients
  • positioning
  • pricing
  • proposals
  • outreach

But there's another question underneath all of it:

  • Why does a client trust one freelancer over another?

  • Two developers can have similar technical skills.

  • One gets the project and eventually gets referred to someone else.

  • The other struggles to get past the first conversation.

I'm starting to think the difference is often in the "boring" stuff:

  • How you communicate.

  • How you ask questions.

  • How you structure the proposal.

  • How you handle pricing objections.

  • How you set expectations.

  • How you invoice.

  • How you close out a project.

  • How easy you make it for the client to work with you.

The code gets you into the conversation.

  • The way you operate determines whether they want to work with you again.

I'm curious what other freelancers think:

What was the thing that made a client start treating you like a professional rather than just "the person building the website"?

I'd especially love to hear from people who've been freelancing for a few years.
