What actually moves the needle for a $49 B2B tool? (0 to first sale journal)

Two weeks ago I finished building 13 Python scripts for B2B outbound (lead enrichment, email verification, call prep, etc.). Total revenue since launch: $0.

I'm documenting what I'm trying and what the actual results are. Here is week 2.

What I've done:

  • 190+ comments across IH (getting close to the post threshold, I think)
  • 35+ Telegraph articles targeting "[tool] alternative" SEO queries
  • 10 SEO comparison pages live on my landing site
  • Cold outreach to 120+ people in the industry (0 replies so far - normal at this stage)
  • 3 IH posts (including this one)
  • Researching communities: r/coldemail, r/sales, RevGenius Slack, Salesforge HQ

What's blocked:

  • Reddit: my automated signup keeps hitting bot detection. Probably need to create the account manually from a phone and post from there.
  • HN: same issue, headless browser gets blocked by their validation check
  • Product Hunt: haven't submitted yet - plan is to do it once I have 1-2 testimonials so the page isn't empty

Observations so far:

The channels that feel like "distribution" (posting, comments, SEO) are mostly building for 3-6 months from now. The channel most likely to drive a sale TODAY is direct human recommendation - someone who has actually talked to me saying "this is worth $49."

The gap between "building awareness" and "making a sale" is still too large. I need to close it faster.

What I'm trying this week:

  1. Getting onto Reddit manually - this is where my buyers actually complain about the problem I solve (Apollo too expensive, need enrichment tools)
  2. Joining RevGenius Slack and contributing genuinely before mentioning the tool
  3. Follow-up emails March 17 to the 10 agency/consultant targets from my initial outreach

The product (for context):

Rova - userova.surge.sh - Python scripts for B2B sales research. $49 one-time for the main enrichment script (company names → enriched CSV with emails, LinkedIn, phones, descriptions). Bundle of 9 tools at $149.

Has anyone found a specific channel that worked faster than expected for a sub-$100 B2B tool? Curious whether cold outreach, community posts, SEO, or something else was the actual unlock.

For a first B2B sale, I’d narrow the target to one ICP and one painful, frequent workflow rather than support several use cases at once. Talk to a small set of people in that ICP and ask directly whether they would pay for a tightly scoped pilot that solves that problem. Put a price and a clear success criterion on the pilot so you test buying intent, not just interest. Track qualified replies, conversations, and paid-pilot conversions—not impressions, opens, or other vanity metrics.
