Sites like Startup Stash, Makerbook, Marketing Stash, etc., exist to showcase websites/products/resources which fill a niche and are useful, but I am not sure what revenue sources are available to turn the growth and maintenance of such a site into a profitable venture. What are your thoughts?
Quickly, I think a few would be:
advertisement/sponsorship money in exchange for a higher position in the product list, prominence, etc.
affiliate links for products which cost money, earning money per sale
I'm not sure about others, but perhaps a free newsletter w/ a paid upgrade (a la Scott's Cheap Flights), or paid tutorials/content (again with subscription of some kind)?
To be honest, I came up with an idea recently for a new type of information directory, that I think would benefit IndieHackers community and others who run an online website or eCommerce business. I'm planning to put something together quickly and post here, but wanted to see what everyone's thoughts were on potential revenue streams.
Well you pretty much mentioned all common revenue sources. I'd just categorize the first two: advertisements and affiliates as easier ones that can work straight away. But for the second streams, paid content and paid newsletter, you must have a reputation in the community to make it work. Other revenue streams can be a job board for the specific niche your directory is about and monetizing the network effect like LinkedIn charging for sending cold messages.
Thanks for your great feedback. So, if I had to summarize your reply, I would say you are suggesting to start with the most obvious and actionable steps first (listed below), and then once the site has a reputation and a following, explore the secondary streams?
Priority:
Yes, right on point.
Let us know when you launch.
