Hey everyone, excited to be doing this but unsure how I should start.
Looking to build GrowthHunt.co in public, both for accountability and educational purposes.
What are some best practices that I should know of about building in public?

There are no well-defined "best practices" as such I think.
IMHO it's best to know why you are doing whatever you are doing. Also, don't be too spammy or salesy.
Audience != customers is an important theme emerging recently.

Totally agree with you, there are no best practices since it depends on the goal, your personality, what you feel comfortable, etc.
Quite cliche but I find the most important first step is to understand WHY you want to do it.

I think the basics are pretty simple, just as with everything else, you should be either useful or entertaining (or both). Every medium is different: random thoughts, or eternal wisdom, or "wow, my first customer!" is OK on Twitter but not on Medium or HN.
Posting "I did X and it did/didn't work" and "I'm struggling with Y, can you help?" regularly is what really makes you Building In Public. "We reached 10K MRR in just 1 year" is not so useful unless you add AMA at the end.
