What are some industries to look into to find pains?

Following up on advice given in the Indie Hackers podcast episode with Justin Jackson of Transistor

What are some good industries to explore and how would you go about reaching out to people in that industry for customer discovery interviews?

I'm looking for an industry that:

  • Is used to paying for subscriptions
  • They have money, they are not stingy (B2B)
  • They would be willing to put their trust on a nobody i.e. this discards big corps
  • It is easy to reach out to, they haven't been spammed into cynicism. They can be reached out in person or by phone fairly easily.

Hi Gabriel, I'm working on a product that should be able to answer this question by providing you with a list of industries and companies within those industries that you can contact.

Could you confirm the following and clarify if I've missed anything?

    Search for:

    • Profitable industries AND
    • Low marketing_spend/limited direct ad targeting
    • Low market concentration
    • Customer focused

      Hi Frank,

      That sounds pretty interesting.

      Can you share a link?

Yeah, I think those parameters would be interesting to explore.

I do. I'll send it to you next week. Cheers.

That is indeed a great criteria. I will think about what unfair advantages I could have.

As for domain knowledge, I've been indiehacking for quite a while now, so I don't have any super deep knowledge on a profitable industry besides the whole indiehacking ecosystem itself.

However, I think I've gotten fairly good at customer discovery so I can quickly embed myself into industries and validate my ideas without wasting times on MVPs or landing pages.
