What are the best alternatives to Mailchimp for Email marketing?

Data base: 200K+ registered users
Frequency: 1-email a week

Problem statement: Looking for cost-effective email services for a startup in stealth mode, Mail chimp is expensive at this point in time.

Looking for good services, which could save cost and deliver a great user experience.

Hi, you can check https://emailoctopus.com/pricing-connect . With them, you can connect your AWS (Amazon) account which has 50K emails/month for free, and then it's super cheap (you can calculate pricing based on your volume https://aws.amazon.com/ses/pricing/)

It's the cheapest option I know except for having your own mail delivery.

Awesome. Thanks a ton. Will go through this.

Welcome. Probably 800K emails/month will cost you around 80$/ month + Octopus subscription ~180$

        1. 1

          Evaluating. Super cool.

EmailOctopus is good if you're on AWS and MailPoet is also good if you're on Wordpress. I'm on AWS and opted for MailPoet+SES.

I see we've been mentioned a handful of times which is always lovely!

But just chipping in to say that as an Indie Hacker we'll also give you 30% off for the first 6 months: https://emailoctopus.com/pricing?coupon=indiehackers

      hahaha. Awesome. Thanks much.

Together with small team of 7, I run an email marketing tool for content creators called BirdSend.

    Highlights:

    • Save up to 80% in email tool expenses every month
    • While still enjoying high email deliverability (open rates)
    • Build email sequence super fast w/ the 1-Page Sequence builder
    • Automatically track email earnings out of the box

Here's the link if you wanna check out:

See if this is a good fit for you? If not, that's cool too.

Has anyone tried "Really Good Emails"?

    1. 1

We use it for inspiration, but it's not an email marketing platform. Just a collection of emails sent by name brands.

  8. 1

Custom built ses is pretty solid price-wise.

I've only tried Mailchimp, Sendgrid, and MailerLite, none of which were ideal for me (SendGrid was the cheapest option, but horrible newsletter builder). I've heard that Beehiiv is quite good, it is being built by the founders of "Morning Brew" newsletter, so might be worth checking out ;) Good luck!

I use Beehive. Pretty sleek product I would say.

If you are trying to cut cost and you are or have a developer inside to tweak it...

Why don't you go for Mautic Ravi?

Is there something I am missing that prevents Mautic from being a good alternative?

Hey there! I’m building loops.so, better email for SaaS startups.

We just finished YC and are beginning to onboard users to our alpha. Let me know if you’d like to check it out!

    1. 1

Hi @ChrisFrantz I'd like to check it. we've tried aweber, active campaign, drip, sendingblue (the worst), now on Mailchimp (which is quite robust, but sooo not user friendly)

  13. 1

We switched from Mailchimp to Mailerlite and have been been so far.

  14. 1

    I'm using sendinblue.com
You get 300 emails per day free, which is amazing when you are starting out and don't have many people on your list. It's virtually free at the beginning

They offer customizable automation and so on. I have been pretty happy with it so far. Works perfectly.

After being frustrated by this problem & the deliverability issues when trying to send emails for my previous product, I've begun to build Mailboat. Will be launching the product soon in 2 weeks :)

  16. 1

loops.so is by far better than anything else I've ever tried yet. I can only recommend them!

  17. 1

If you are ok with self-hosted solutions, you might try https://github.com/Mailtrain-org/mailtrain ( node.js ) and https://www.mautic.org/ ( PHP ). We send around 1M emails per month using Mautic (it requires pretty big SSD disk for email stats, though). Both of these solutions support Amazon SES which is the most obvious choice for cost-effective mail transport now.

For my 50K list I'm using critsend.com (very cheap sending of emails), and for the newsletter themselves thenewsletterplugin.com. Remark that the latter runs on WordPress, and you need a pretty good server for the newsletters to get sent. They claim they have customers with millions of subscribers.

It's by far the cheapest option that I have seen.

  19. 1

I've used http://convertkit.com it was pretty good for newsletters and email marketing and has improved a lot over the years 🤠

    1. 1

The only reason not going for it is pricing at this stage of the startup. But aligned on the choice.

    1. 1

      Is this cost-effective?

Does it support scale? Like sending 500K+ emails a week?

Maybe Customer.io? Not sure if it's cheaper than MailChimp, but a lot of startups use them.
