What are the best practices for email campaigns?

Hey,

I'm trying to figure out what the best practices are for email campaigns. What works best, branded HTML emails or simple text emails? Should I mention the recipient's name or it's ok to keep it neutral? Is there are any tricks that help to improve open/response rate?

Thanks!

Both HTML and simple text email works but each needs to be configured differently. If you go with the plain text do what @andreboso says. If you go with the HTML you need to keep it simple a header image, bullet points clean title that instantly tells what the user will get if they use whatever your are selling. Also, I found "The Copywriter's Handbook: A Step-By-Step Guide To Writing Copy That Sells" book helpful.

Can you provide a bit more information? Who are you sending emails to? Why and what about? What are you trying to achieve?

A weekly blog newsletter, B2B cold sales email and a B2C jewelry-ecommerce deal email will all have very different best practices.

I'm working on a B2B Saas and I'm trying to figure out a general strategy for all kind of emails:

      • First of all, I'm about to deploy billing system and want to explain to my users what will happen with their free accounts.
      • I want to send people updates about new features.
      • I also plan to send tips & tricks, new ideas how to use service.
      • And at last but not least, I'm planning to send email notifications with a report for the past day/week/month etc.

        1. Use a simple HTML mail with minimal distractions (sample source/screenshot https://gist.github.com/kehers/334518b044b547147736d83a6c43825f)
        2. Include a link to unsubscribe.

Thank you for showing the example, I really like the template!

        Thanks for the additional information.

I'm sorry, the question is too broad for me to answer well. My suggestion would be to check out how a similar company you admire handles these problems.

Without knowing much about your situation, I imagine there are challenges which are comparatively speaking much more important to focus on (being serious, not snarky) :)

        Good luck!
