What are you going to build this week?

For the past few weeks, I have been doing these weekly round-ups on Indie Hackers about ‘what you are going to build this week.’

Here is the one from last week.

Did it help you?

Doing these round-ups somehow helped me a lot to focus on small achievable goals over a week as opposed to daily stand-ups or being demoralized by the weight of a gigantic backlog that lays ahead of me.

It truly has been helpful for me to work in the open.

I know as indie hackers, as a person seeking financial independence, creative freedom, and the ability to work on our own schedule, we have this bias against having a boss to push us around.

That's the reason why we even got on the indie-hacking bandwagon after all! 😎

But boy does not having a boss to boss you around have a few disadvantages too? Don't you miss having a good boss to push you a little? Someone who looks at your progress each week and says: Hey, how are you doing on that issue right now? Did you complete the goal this week?

@rosiesherry and I discussed some of these ideas last week and decided to start a new group called Goal Setters for better accountability.

Join it if you feel sprinkling some discipline into your indie life will help you!

Here’s how the group will work:

We set a goal for our projects each Monday by adding it to comments here. Complete it by Friday!

Rosie and I will be moderating the group and we will be available at the end of each week (Friday) to assess your progress and help you follow the regimen. Like a boss. 😎

So, tell us what are you going to build this week?

  1. 3

I'm working on the Tournaments features for https://ProGamer.app

    1. 1

Sounds like an exciting feature. Go build it!

  2. 2

We are going to fix the existing issues and implement automation when a new remote job is approved on RemoteWorkJar.com.

  3. 2

I'm working on better support for drafts on https://midnight.pub. I'm also trying to find a way to add a "jukebox", I think it would add a lot to the atmosphere, but I'm not sure what/how to do so.

    1. 1

What do you mean by 'better support' for drafts? Isn't keeping drafts safe a core functionality of any writer tool?

If I'm writing an essay or a book, I would do that in silence or play music from my list of favorites using an app that I currently use. You probably don't need a Jukebox along with the writer. Talk to your users!

  4. 2

I'm working on the subscriptions feature for Nodewood.

By Friday, I will have completed:

    • The invoice list on the subscriptions page
    • The ability to cancel subscriptions
    • Added rate-limiting by IP address for subscriptions
    • Made progress on improving SEO for the home page

I want to launch into private beta by the end of the month, which means making a bunch of progress on the subscriptions feature, but I want to also balance that with marketing activities, and improving SEO seems like a good long-tail activity to work on.

  5. 2

I am porting the auto-updater functionality for userTrack.net from the standalone version to the WordPress version.

I am also improving my build tools (gulp tasks) for the project so I can easier release new versions without having to manually copy files and update text (which is very prone to errors).

Those are most of the last steps I was planning to take before going all-in on marketing and see if the project will work or not. 😱

My reasoning was that by always being able to very quickly fix bugs, implement features requested by the users, release and automatically distribute them, I will save time in the long-term by reducing the number of support tickets received and also greatly improve the user experience of using the product. Who doesn't like seeing a notification for their favorite product that an improvement they have been waiting for has just been released?

  6. 2

Working on upstamps.com documentation and integrations to help web developers to release features faster with feature flags.

  7. 2

My main goal this week is to setup a recurring interview session.
I've learned there are many great dev's out there and I want to get to know some better by interviewing them for my blog.

  8. 2

Starting to integrate social media platforms into my app. https://imgur.com/a/mMD16y7

    1. 2

Sure, wrap it up by Friday!

  9. 1

I'll start on the thread with my goals of this week:

    1. Introduce automatic db_backups on the dockerized mongo container of my app.
    2. Introduce auto Letsencrypt renewals using the crontab/docker-certbot.

I want to get rid of as many manual tasks as possible this week. If the above two issues pan out for me early, I'll probably go back into the application layer or write a blog post about my progress by Friday. 🤞🏻

Talk to your customers. That’s the best startup advice there ever has been!

Interesting that you mention 'The Mom Test' by Rob Fitzpatrick here. I only began reading it today.

My guess is that the customers who talk a lot help us reach the ones that are willing to pay, but I'm gonna wait on what the book has to say about this. 🏄🏻‍♂️
