What are you using for Analytics?

We're currently using Google Analytics, but it is overly complex and seems to require a ton of education to set up basic things.

We run a SaaS company and ideally want to be able to track where visitors come from and the conversion rates for demos, sign ups, paid and maybe some actions inside the app for each traffic source (Indie Hackers vs Product hunt vs etc).

Would love to learn about your solutions and anything else interesting you do with analytics.

Yup. Same here. Just pulled Google Analytics out and it felt really good.

Fathom seems great for simple use cases, but I want to dig one level deeper.

I want to know as an example the percentage of Indie hacker traffic that converts to demos, sign ups and paid.

Although Google Analytics has a steep learning curve I am sure there a ton of resources available for you to learn how to use it properly. It is probably in your best interest to just study up on it.

    I have used a few time https://heap.io/
in different projects. last I checked they had a killer support team.

    1. 1

That looks interesting, but I'm a little put off by the "call for pricing" for the Growth plan.

  3. 2

    Yeah, analytics is bloated af

  4. 2

    Currently using Fathom Analytics too!

  5. 2

I also use Fathom. Great service and great support.

      1. 2

You’re welcome Jack...you are everywhere, aren’t you? Didn’t know you were on here.

  6. 2

Another vote for Fathom Analytics here - using it on https://adsoup.co

Another solution is to use https://github.com/medius/utm_form . It's quite simple to use and in effect similar to the answer of @Primer .

  8. 1

Using https://www.fusedeck.ch for different customers - it's a Swiss tracking tool. It offers realtime and cookieless tracking possibilities, audience management etc. Not free, but generates a lot of data to analyze and work with.

  9. 1

Look for event based tracking tools like heap (really expensive, the auto event tracking does not add value when you have in house developers), mixpanel (good pricing, same functionality) or amplitude.

  10. 1

We use Heap with Google Analytics.

You can use utm parameters with Heap, so that you know the traffic source of conversions.

From inside Heap, you can also create reports to see how many ppl sign up for free trial, then continue to paid plan, etc.

Heap also have a free forever plan, which we're currently using.

Im personally not using it yet but as far as I know, https://simpleanalytics.com/ by @adriaanvanrossum is not that bad as well 🙂🤙

  12. 1

Not sure how big your start up is, but Heap also has a badge programme for higher limits: https://heap.io/badge.

Other option is Mixpanel (analytics + marketing automation).

And if you have some spare time/money, the segment.com is a good idea too. Doesn't do analytics. But will allow you to test other tools.

What tech stack are you on? I'm using Rails and recently learned about "Ahoy!" It's a plugin, so you are tracking stats on your server and will not be affected by ad blockers. I'm working through a Rails upgrade right now so I can try it out.

  14. 1

I'm mostly with https://bentonow.com and Netlify Analytics.

  15. 1

For ClipDish, I'm using Amplitude in our app and Google Analytics on the public website. For another project I'm using GA and Mixpanel.

    1. 1

Yeah we use Amplitude, but found it difficult and it still wants me to export data to CSV.

I want uniques over total users.

Also GA and Amplitude are blocked by 40%-50% of my visitors which is another problem I should have mentioned.

I am currently building one analytics platform "to rule them all". So far the focus was on qualitative data such as heatmaps and session recordings, but now I am adding more quantitative data so you can easily track stuff like conversion rates or session times for specific segments.

Being self-hosted, there's some focus on having a lower cost and more privacy than other platforms, but I do try to create the best analytics platform for the average user (so not as complex as Google Analytics but still being able to provide all the data you usually need about your users).

Let me know if you have any questions/suggestions about userTrack.

I'm currently working on an user analytics & A/B testing tool called Splitbee.

I would be happy if you want to try it out.
https://app.splitbee.io/login (sorry for the login page look, its not officially launched yet!)
I'm using cookies to get user based stats, events and more!

    Looking forward to your feedback!

I'm looking for something specific aka I want to know what traffic converts the best.

So for https://versoly.com/ i want to know the percentage of Indie hacker traffic converts to demos.

      1. 1

thats not possible yet but a great idea! i‘ll implement this asap! :)

Thanks interesting solution, can also use document.referrer.

  18. 1

I'm building versusmetrics to solve this problem: it'll allow you to see where people came from (referrer + on which page they landed on your site) when they convert. (That's possible without compromising on your users privacy & without using cookies!)

    Would that help you?

    1. 2

Interesting to see uptime and website analytics together.

Seems like two different use cases. But I guess a website needs both.

Solution does sound close to what I want. When do you plan on launching?

      1. 1

I hope to launch a beta version in a few weeks. If you like, I'll let you know when it's ready!

    2. 2

You might want to switch your branding up, it is wayyyyy to close, almost looks ripped off of Fathom. https://usefathom.com

      1. 2

We see multiple product copies per week, it's all good. Lower-end competition still pushes us. Only recommendation I would give to OP is that $4 / month is no way to bootstrap a sustainable business.

        1. 2

Thanks for the feedback, both of you! I'll probably change my design soon.
Love the trend fathom has kicked off!

I use a bunch of things, mostly custom API endpoints to get exactly what I want, and then plot them on a dashboard tool I've been building: https://everview.app

I sometimes find it much easier to just code something myself and make an endpoint for it than learning new tools. I do use GA for some things but only pull in the bits I need. Also Stripe and Xero for tracking finances.

    1. 1

      Thanks.

I was thinking of having some custom endpoints myself.

    1. 1

Hi there, I studied GA goal flow ...

It was not ideal but that is all I could find.

Do not hesitate to DM on twitter with questions and screenshot if you have trouble finding what you want :)

What about Yandex Metrica? Its free, includes session replay and more.

Just found out that Google blocks 40-50% of my traffic, all privacy analytics are blocked as well.

I like to think i'm tech savvy, but GA is something else.

    2. 1

Absolutely. The only thing it wont track is visitors who have privacy blockers installed, and this trend will only increase as people become more privacy aware. If you think your audience is such people, it is also worth checking server logs to see if that is the case, but bear in mind those logs will have all the bot traffic / hackers / scrapers etc.

I don't know, I can't tell this from their feature list. Hopefully someone else can answer that.
