What can be done about the global housing crisis? Plenty
by

Every proposed solution in that article involves increasing government control over housing.
In the U.S., regulatory/zoning/planning compliance comprises nearly 24% of the cost of a new single-family home and more than 30% of the cost of multifamily development. Reducing that burden would increase housing production (and, as inventory increases, lower costs) much faster than the proposals in the article.
24% is pretty wild. Builders' costs however are just one part of the challenge. Foreign investment in RE is another complicating dynamic. There needs to be a bigger change perhaps to reduce this regulatory burden and to incentivize different behavior for financing. Ano It seems there isn't a city in the U.S. doing this well.
I feel for young people who are struggling to take out $500K+ mortgages for a home that's worth a fraction of that.
