What did you use to make your website for your startup?

I feel like Squarespace is so limited, it's not letting me do what I want and doesn't reflect the kind of design I need but I don't have the funds to pay a web developer to make something... I'm competent but can't code although I could learn, so wanted to know If anyone had any recommendations of what to do here or any tools I could use.

    A text editor!

Seriously, I entirely hand-coded discosloth.com in pure HTML & CSS. I don't even consider myself a developer, but it was a good exercise in getting better at something I've always wanted to be better at. There are many frameworks to look at (Skeleton, Bootstrap, etc) if you want a base to jump off of. Or even download an HTML5 template and hack away at it!

That's the best way to learn! Did you just hardcode all of your SEO scripts into the site, or are there generators that people use to add such content to websites?

      1. 1

It's all hardcoded. What I did to make it easier was create JavaScript includes on my page template so I can apply things throughout the site just by editing a single .html file.

Oh cool, and thanks for your reply!

Thanks - You're right maybe it's best practice

Wow I actually found this earlier it looks awesome

I use to use WordPress, now that I'm looking into it again I'm giving WebFlow a shot as I've seen a few other indie hackers use and recommend it.

    1. 1

I think it might just be the right place to give a shot, I've seen this as you say mentioned a few times

    Great question :)

    Bootstrap, VueJS, Firebase

    1. 1

This without bootstrap. Vue and Firebase are awesome and work extremely well together

Besides the usual 3? Flask and Bulma.

100% Honestly for someone that can quickly pick up visual tools it's so easy to build a site, I've canceled Squarespace and i'm going with this yes it's like $400 a year but a small fee to pay for such a great tool

    Hey Noah,

I recommend WordPress. What do you want to make? WordPress along with third-party plugins can produce almost anything you want if used right. If you can't do it on your own, I've plenty of vetted WordPress developers who can help you set the website you like. Prices are really cheap like $20/hr. or $1050/mo. and the developer is all yours. www.designpac.net/pricing

I noticed that you've already chosen Webflow for your startup. But if you do have some spare time, you can give GatsbyJS (https://www.gatsbyjs.org/) a try. Of course, it's a DIY option, but the folks at GatsbyJS has one of the best documentation ever written online, even for beginners. And they also have some starter templates that you can try. As a digital marketing agency, you will benefit a lot from Gatsby's blazing fast framework, mainly from performance and SEO advantage.

It surely looks cool but as a non-technical user I have no idea how to build a website with it.

      1. 1

I understand. I'm just sharing it to you because you mentioned that you are willing to learn. Maybe you can come back to it someday and give it a shot. For now, your priority is to ship, so Webflow is a good option. :)

    Webflow all the way!

I forgot how effing awesome Webflow is until I read this thread. After a year of not using it, I got back on it today and then immediately asked to cancel my Bluehost subscription and threw Wordpress out window. Webflow is just SO much better for visual people

Thanks, that does make sense :)

I'm going to with the Enigma theme on webflow.com due to everyone's recommendations, all the best and might use yours for other projects!

Awesome Landen looks great but at just under *$200 annually for webflow.com I'm sold 💸

  13. 1

Webflow it is, I'm able to use photoshop so can figure it out - already spent half the night on it and oh boy it's pretty awesome :)

    Thanks for the others :)

    Update:

In the spirit of figuring it all out for yourself I bought webflow.com on their Lite plan and got a template top rehash and tweak - So thanks to everyone for all of this advice 🙌I'm going to do it myself :)

I've developed TheSaaS for this purpose. I updated the landing page of https://formito.com/ today and designed on top of TheSaaS.

Awesome thanks for sending this my way, looks great. So what is the basic premise a theme I purchase and overlay in WP ?

      1. 1

It's a WP theme, so you easily install it on your WP installation. Developing pages are also easy. You can try the page builder here: http://thetheme.io/thesaasx/try-page-builder/

I guess, from the variety of responses it would be useful to know what you are wanting to build.

So I'm building a digital marketing agency focusing on helping saas and startups that have raised seed funding solidify their social strategy to give them a brand identify / social proof to get to series A

If you can't code, maybe check out Carrrd.co? Depending on what you need for a website, but it should help with building a simple landing page.

    1. 1

      Thanks :) Always loved Carrd.
