Browsing hackernews I went down a rabbit hole and re-stumbled upon Paul Graham's classic article about Doing things that Don't Scale
I'm curious, what things are you doing right now that benefit your business which simple don't scale?
Reaching out to individual community members who contribute disproportionate value to the site, then learning from and collaborating with them.
That’s cool! Quite frankly I was never motivated to make a post (compared to long-form commenting), until one of your moderators kindly requested it. It’s a unique feature of indiehackers that I really like.
Ps. thanks for sharing the article. A great read.
This is so true "Actually startups take off because the founders make them take off. "
I think it's difficult to scale a fee for service business. You're always hustling for the next thing... so I smile when I see IH post their passive MRR ideas and start generating incomes... even small is awesome.
I spend a lot of time crafting detailed answers to anyone reaching support/asking for help for my product. This won't work if 5-10 users contact me in the same day, but that never happened. By spending the time to describe a detailed solution and explain what something happened, I also understand myself the problem better and can take better decision for the future to make sure it won't happen again.
Creating custom demos for each prospect for outreach. Yea it's easier to just send generic ones but the results are too good to not keep doing this till it becomes impossible to scale.
I can imagine once we're bigger, might become a more automated task.
Selling door to door and talking with existing customer and building relationship with our leads.
pass out flyers door to door.

Just kidding ;)
I would say customer cases. Video if possible. But I guess those could scale in the sense that you could bring more traffic to them.
Thanks SpaceMadsen :) What do you mean by customer cases, like seeing how the customers use your product? Or customer-guided walkthrough of the product, explaining what feature they'd want to have?
In this case I meant producing case videos. Like this one where I interview our customers: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QRMvGYaxMWY&t=6s
But then I caught my own stupidity. Because those videos require me physically present = not scalable. But once produced marketing them = scalable.
I see, yes looks like hard work, but great production value 👍
That was my most chill day in a while :P
The video guys had the hard job ;)
