What do you freelance in?

I know many indie hackers freelance.

I also know many indie hackers look to hire freelancers (and struggle to find them).

If you are a freelancer:

  • what do you do?
  • where can people find out more about you?

I think indiehackers needs a dedicated page to list all the freelancer services available. That would be a big help to everyone here.

Good idea about a dedicated area for freelancers (and services?), will raise it with Courtland and see what can be done.

For now, I'll do these posts on a monthly basis, see if you can build up some momentum behind it.

I was fortunate enough to board the React framework hype train really early on (5~ years ago). I rode that train to where I am now and take on consulting and freelance gigs that fit my skillset. This often translates to other software related positions as well -- mostly just go with the flow and try to make the best decisions along the way

    1. 1

      This just boggles my mind.

I have never seen "consulting" job in React. I have also 5 years of experience and I also believe I was very good in it (although got a bit rusty recently).

Never in my life have I seen any opportunity to do "consulting", whatever that means, just regular... you know... jobs.

Either freelancing for cheap on crappy websites like upwork, or just working full time, like all regular people do.

Never have I met in my career a person doing something else with that skillset.

So is there a world of opportunities that are simply not accessible to me, or by "consulting" do you just mean glorified freelance?

Also, does it pay well? I was doing some calculations on the prices I have seen on upwork and it was just not worth it to play with freelance, considering how much time you would need to invest in building a portfolio / finding clients etc.

      So... what am I missing?

      1. 1

Mostly glorified freelancing with the stipulation that you're there to either provide some mentorship or diagnose and execute on a business problem caused by react or its ecosystem/tooling.

The opportunities I've received are mostly from word of mouth and land me short-term contracts or ongoing contracts.

As for the pay, since it's not ordinarily full-time work I charge a pretty steep rate ($95USD~/hour). Keep in mind my network is what drives this rate up, and I'm often juggling multiple projects.

          Thanks for the answer!

I do Ruby software development consulting. I've been working with Ruby / Rails almost exclusively for 15 years so it's allowed me to develop a niche helping people and teams specifically who need deep Ruby knowledge.

Although I have several money-making side projects here on Indie Hackers, I invest all of that revenue back into their growth. So all of my personal income comes from consulting.
