It's an easy trap to fall into, giving away too little, or too much.
What do you give away for free? And how did you come to that decision?
I give away an entire product with Superposition and a bunch of online tools like a contrast checker, CSS specificity explainer and a tool to see your visitors browser sizes visualized.
With Superposition, I eventually want to get a paid tier with more features. The online tools are all things I wrote for Polypane that would be useful on their own that I extracted and made online tools of, which I hope will drive people to try Polypane. :)
5000 Free Credits every month for Prospectss.com
I give away a free version of AdminKit, available at GitHub, which definitely helps to attract new customers. I like to think I'm in the sweet spot, giving away just enough.
A comparison between features (free and pro version) can be found here: https://adminkit.io/#download
I'm giving away FilePond a complete client-side file upload library.
If you want to do custom image editing with it, it'll only take 5 minutes to integrate Doka Image Editor.
At the moment I'm considering giving away part of Doka for free as well, something like only image cropping + 90 degree rotating.
On top of that I'm giving away a whole set of other JavaScript/WordPress solutions:
Software. e.g. https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/fix-ap-news/lokebojckgiilojldcehpakgaiddnlho
I help founders and their teams with free mentoring blog and free mentoring platform — they are welcome to get paid coaching and courses/workshops, but I believe that sometimes people just need this extra little nudge :-) You can read or create your account for free here: https://cubitoo.com/blog
Library of 3D hand gestures for any design - H A N D Z
I gave away almost everything free on Watermark.ink , very few restrictions.
Currently, all of my content. 😅
I'm actually taking the plunge soon to have restricted content at www.scripturesauce.com
We went with a free plan on ServerAuth.com which gives you a limited but still useful subset of our main features.
Some of the features that cost us more to operate for example make sense to hold back for paying customers. It serves as a nice way to let people take the product for a spin as well.
Hey, nice site! One recommendation I have though would to add a significant signup button to the top of the page. Right now, having it as part of the menu makes it blend in too much, but that’s just my opinion.
We give Hi5 Awesome for free for up to 20 users. The reason being, we are a small startup and realise the challenges startups face in laying the foundation of a great company culture. As they grow, we can upsell them.
Most of our features are available on Hi5 Awesome, and our premium package Hi5 Business allows unlimited Pulse survey creation and reports.
We offer a free edition of MyChat corporate messenger (https://www.indiehackers.com/product/mychat) for 20 online connections.
This offer can be useful for small teams who want to work safely over the internet or in a local network.
I'm giving 2 months access to my saas app for free. The decision behind this was that I believe you need to spend a lot of time with it to see the value it can bring. https://www.whizz.space/
Was in the process of developing my mini-course (a roadmap for learning to code), but decided to give away the content for free to build good will and an audience
I give away landing page templates for designers, developers and makers in general. It helps them launch their products faster and gets few of them interested in the Pro versions of the templates. They're built with HTML and Bootstrap and require medium HTML/CSS coding skills for customization. It's a win-win situation because this approach got my website noticed, tripled my traffic increased sales and helped a lot more users with the free versions.
I give away my whole product which is free for open source projects :)
It was free for about 3 years before I started to commercialise it by:
https://alvarotrigo.com/fullPage/
1- Selling extensions for it that added new features.
2- Later on changing the license type and charging for non open source projects.
For my new project (a web editor for fullscreen static pages), I give free access to most features and limit users to create only 2 pages.

Books! 🥳
So far I have printed 700 titles that are either public domain or sourced from writers who were happy to share their work on the web:
https://bubblin.io
I think books are an important tool to groom your attention span with. The prose, the quality of storytelling, punctuation, and even typography matters a lot and is important to our perception of the world.

I give away Gatsby Starter SaaS Marketing to help folks quickly put together a performant marketing site or landing page. I created it to learn Gatsby but decided to open source it in case others might find it helpful.
Github Repo
The Half-Half newsletter theme for BuildFaster.co
I'm building HigherValues.io - let's people find and discover online colleges. I give away two things for free:
Our core platform https://interviewloop.io/ is free for individuals. No strings attached. We came up with that decision so as build a vibrant community of interviewers, as we believe our product spreads by word of mouth. The other reason is that we keep our running costs low by building most of our tech in-house, not the best strategy but we are some really hardcore software developers, and we enjoy it.
I am working on a user feedback & feature request management tool. Its in very early stage now.
Reason for giving away free:
I give away free beta access of Right Feature once I release beta version in exchange of their valuable feedback/suggestions. :)
Decision: i want to make sure that my product will exactly answer users needs that will be possible if I initially offer beta users free accesss in ezchange of thier feedback/suggestions and I'll iterate more to make improvements accordingly.
initially, we did a free trial for 1 week, noticed nobody wanted it because we required them entering credit card details to start the trial. Didn't work out. Then we gave "5 credits to every sign up", noticed people created multiple account to get free credits when they run out. So we decided to give a "demo model" out of others, we said "this one is free to download but others please pay". for context: https://www.diecuttemplates.com/
Knowledge!
Keysmith lets you make custom keyboard shortcuts, so for the "trial" we limit it to 5 shortcuts at a time. There's no time limit.
It's got the power of the full product, so users can really get an accurate sense of what they're getting before they buy.
Only users who are a f*** yes and clearly get value from having many custom keyboard shortcuts pay a cent, and I feel really good about that.
Portabella has a generous free tier, one that I might have to restrict if I get a decent amount of use on it.
We give lifetime access to Tractific for free: https://www.indiehackers.com/post/integrate-tractific-and-get-free-lifetime-membership-729ab97ad5
We decided to launch a free resource page with a bunch of free drone clips on VReel.co - simply to bring people into our sales funnel. We could clearly see that the big free stock platforms were doing great, and our free clips were very popular there, so we wanted some of that traffic ourselves.
After 2 months, we have had over 500 unique users downloading our free clips from our platform - meaning we've got over 500 email adressess to people we know are interested in stock drone footage 🤗
Many people in are also suffering from decreased marketing budgets now, so giving away high quality content for free feels extra good if it can help someone stay creative.
