What do you need help with right now?

At the beginning of every month indie hackers share their monthly goals with each other. Now let's discuss the challenges we're all facing to reach those goals!

  • What do you need help with?
  • What help/advice/service can you offer others?

Please reply to someone else and help them out — especially if you've requested help yourself!

    Thanks for doing this @channingallen.

Currently building versoly.com a landing page builder focused on SaaS companies and helping them convert better.

Would love some people to demo the product :)

If you don't have time to demo, and want to help, please fill out https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSeZiRgocf4vK9OgNDKwyomz_zqngKKgjnw4sVkUEy4US9ifBA/viewform?usp=sf_link

I can help with landing pages, technical advice from frontend to backend and anywhere in between. I have experience with cold emails as well.

    1. 1

      cold emails to who?

      1. 1

If you're doing sales for a B2B SaaS, it is normally profitable to find emails from Linkedin etc and then cold email them.

    2. 1

Interesting indeed. Could your page builder be added inside a SaaS? I currently re-design my SaaS and need a page builder/editor inside.

      1. 1

        Interesting point.

          1. 1

I am afraid it is not a suggestion. But I believe it would be a good idea to think about and product and marketing together. Perhaps having landing page code and product code in the same repository helps. For me, personally, I always like to work on the product. I spend way less time thinking about marketing. But if they are tied together it will force me to think about both at the same time.

            1. 1

Marketing is my expertise, so I am focusing on the features and benefits of the service. The rest comes easy to me.

I've actually been working on the same product, but I've been too busy to get it shipped.

I have an audience of Elixir devs that's shown a willingness to buy things. Depending on the quality and the pricing, I might be able to collaborate with you or be an affiliate. Send me an email if you're interested!

Hello, I'm currently working on Cloout.co
In a nutshell, it's all about writing the kind of news I'd like to read; short, easy to understand and witty.
It is a weekly newsletter, max 10 stories - financial and political news, a 5-7 minute read.
Focus is primarily on Nigeria, Africa then International news.

Inspired by the folks at Morning Brew, Finimize and Skimm

Currently working on SEO and distribution right now to increase the number of subscribers, currently, have 42 subscribers. Any help around this or other ideas would be welcomed :-)

Hi I'm Kanishk from Seatmate - www.seatmate.me. This is a mobile app in which people can review their friends and colleagues against their different suited skills.

We need a strategy to reach out to people groups who will be interested in the app and use it.

Any help would be appreciated. Thanks in advance 👍

    Hey hackers!

I restarted Seoforum.com just recently to help site owners with SEO and technical stuff. The app is built with Laravel and I am still working on mobile template, adding new features, testing and fixing bugs.

However, I quiet struggle with growth. I know how to acquire traffic organically in a long term, however, I am not sure how to target the right audience (which is different from audience I can get from organic search) and convert them into active users.

If anyone could help, I'd appreciate it and I am open to help you with your project in exchange.

    Thank you!

    1. 0

Hey I created a course that would be perfect for you https://www.growyourclicks.com/p/audience/

  20. 1

I built an app in a weekend and getting traffic is really difficult. It is seasonal too.

    https://keeporsell.club

It gives the Manchester United fans to vote which player to stay and which player should leave the club for the next season.

I built using the latest JavaScript stack like ReactJs and Redux.

    I am in two minds

    1. Whether to carry on with the project and build all the other 19 team pages in the English premier league

    2. Make a course on how I did the app in a weekend as the tech stack that I used is very hot at the moment.

Please help me choose the path. Thanks buddy 👍

    1. 2

Do the one you'd rather do :)

  21. 1

My Indian developer basically abandoned me with a few important features not working quite well on my site that is supposed to be in the beta testing stage right now. What should I do? Should I keep on pressing on her to finish (I'm so tired since it's been taking more than a year) or should I hire someone else to finish it to my satisfaction? How do I know the new guy will not mess up what's already built? Any advice would be appreciated.

    1. 2

Tatiana, is your developer demanding more money or just stalling?

If there's a money problem, the problem is on your side that you didn't split the payment into clear milestones and gave him leverage.

If he's stalling then, most likely, he's unable to finish the job. The task is beyond his technical skills. Maybe there was a communication problem or he really wanted to get this job, you'll never know for sure, but it happens often for a developer to overpromise.

I guess you have two choices: try to "sit down" with him and understand where's the issue, or move on and hire someone else, this time explaining specifically what do you want him to do (expected output)

You have most of your product done. Now you're putting the final pieces in place. In this situation, I would just spend more time interviewing freelancers and finding a qualified person to finish the job. More talk before making a commitment.
PS. Maybe the payment will be higher then what you're currently paying the actual developer but, if you can afford at this point it should be worth it.

      1. 1

Hi, sorry I couldn't figure out how to respond to your comment. (Couldn't find the "reply" link :)
I think that the problem is that my developer grossly underbid to get my project, or she wasn't able to foresee the complexity of it. She quoted 300 hours, so I expected two-three months for completion. Now I've got a partial project built in 14 months and I've paid 30% more just because I felt bad for her working for me almost for free. I've promised her another payment if she could only finish a few things and fix some bugs but it's hanging in the air for more than a month and nothing is being done. Or, she tells me she has fixed something but when I test it, it's not fixed. I'm getting very frustrated. She probably is frustrated, too.

        1. 1

In the app making world, it's kind of common for the project to take more time than expected. But from 3 months to more than a year... there is a problem. And also:

she tells me she has fixed something but when I test it, it's not fixed

That's a big red flag. I'm sure that she is a nice person and after working with her all this time you developed a relationship. This is a far guess but, are you still working with her even if you are unhappy with her work because you are afraid to "fire" her?

And I get it. That's why I would like to propose a scenario:

What if you would reach out to an agency or a developer who has the necessary skills to finish your project and have as a requirement for them to work with your current developer. In this way:

          • You will make sure the next person won't mess up your project because you have her (the person you trust) in the process
          • She can point to the current issues for them to just dive in and fix
          • And make you feel better about yourself because you're not throwing her under the bus.

Actually, it's the opposite. You are taking a burden off her shoulders and in the end, she will still have the satisfaction of finishing the project.

Of course, your budget should be split like 80% the new developer, 20% the current one. But that's to be figured out on your part.

          1. 1

This is a good idea! I'll see if I can make it work.
            Thanks a lot!

  22. 1

I'm building a simple Flask app using Docker with an Alpine image. I'm trying to deploy it to Amazon's AWS EC2 using the free tier but it seems the image is too large for the micro (free) tier on AWS. I would like to keep development cheap. Let me know if you have experience with this :)

    1. 1

Depends on the size of the image, but check out where Zeit (now.sh) can be of benefit to you!

Looking to get an idea called Chatlyne off the ground. The vision is to be the Snapchat when people actually liked Snapchat...you know, before the update that everyone hated. I want to go back to basic with Chatlyne. Ephemeral messages, easy navigation and fun filters. Just so everyone knows, I have absolutely no coding skills. My background is business development and growth. Anyone interested in building what could potentially replace Snap or be a better version of it?

    1. 1

Vez, can I challenge your idea for a moment?

Snapchat changed a lot over time and some people criticized it for that. But a lot of other changes happened in the social space since then. There might be a small group of people who miss the legacy Snap (like you) but my far guess is that the majority of people are just fine with the current state of Instagram or even Messenger.

Did you get validation from the market, how many people would add one more chatting app on their screen today?

      1. 1

That's great insight but from my point of view people are always willing to try something new if it's fun and easy to use. Can you imagine if Snap asked themselves the same question? It probably would've never been built. What separates successful startups is their ability to execute blindly versus looking at what's out there and being discouraged. There's no such thing as building something brand new anymore. You can only make things better.

        1. 1

There's no such thing as building something brand new anymore – I totally agree with you. But there should be an incentive for the user to try your product. Something that makes your product feel like new

Your main features: "ephemeral messages, easy navigation, fun filters" found a new place in other social networks. If the success was as easy as rolling back to these basic features, Snapchat would have done it already. There's a reason why they did those changes instead.

If you would have described your unique idea as a fusion of these features or as a niche product, I would have been more receptive. Right now I'm skeptical and that's my sincerest feedback I can give you.

    Internet Privacy Simulator

We really need help in growth hacking and marketing, while feedback on the game is really good, we really want to reach a lot of audience and get some funding.

I made a subreddit for the community that we are trying to build but I think this is not enough, We are willing to do paid ads but we want to make sure that with little money, we will hit the right area.

here's our landing page with our prototype.

    Hi All,

I'm starting a blog dedicated to workspaces and productivity. You can check it out at https://wrkspcx.com.

I'm looking for individuals (or startups!) to interview to learn about how your workspaces is are designed, what tools you use, and how you work. In return, I can provide you with some free advertising to get your name out there.

    1. 1

I would write something, but not straight away, got a few things to clear off my plate first.

  26. 1

Hi All, I'm building a code and container marketplace called SugarKubes (https://sugarkubes.io). I have about 8 projects on there now (mostly machine learning containers) but haven't made any sales.

I'd really like to hear from the devs out there what kind of projects or docker containers would you love to see on here? If it's something generic I think I can sell to others on the platform, I'd happily build it and give you a copy free.

Currently, my biggest issue is sales. I get a few hundred visitors a week from product hunt, hacker news, medium, Instagram, and google ads. I watch almost every user session and people always come, check out the containers and leave. I don't think the marketplace has the right components yet that people would be willing to purchase but I'd love to hear other's thoughts on what to try next.

    1. 1

Hi wrannaman, Your product reminds me of Bitnami, which is being acquired by VMware . I recall trying out a few vms from Bitnami early on when they had launched. They started with packaging popular open source applications. You may want to try that. Bitnami acquisition may open up a void for such marketplace.

      1. 1

That's an excellent insight, thanks @sjt I hadn't thought of that before.

  27. 1

I'm still struggling to get top-line growth on Alchemist Camp, my screencasts site. The paying subscribers are increasing steadily and churn is very rare, but the site traffic itself, the YouTube channel and the general reach has been slow.

What I'm currently doing to improve this at the general level is creating content that's easier to read and skim since videos are a big ask. More tactically, I'm experimenting with submitting content to HN. No big wins yet, but in the worst case, the text-based content should still bring some search engine traffic as long as it's similarly useful as the videos are.

    1. 1

I run a blog for programmers, and have been regular writer to HN and medium about industry topics.
You can check out my articles on https://medium.com/@tipsnguts. I have also written for companies trying to get their word out on big scale.

If it interests you, feel free to reach out penmagnet-at-tipsnguts.com. Thanks..

  28. 1

Great thread! I am looking for a tech co-founder for my projects. Since i am from marketing background and if i have person who do well with web development and coding, that would be great.

    1. 1

what kind of ideas do you have?

  29. 1

After weeks building moderator-guru.com, we are trying to get our very first users (whether they are paying users or not).

We are more or less technical guys (I did an MBA but forgot most they teach me about entrepreneurship), and this is our first time going so far in launching a real product at scale and are kind of astonished/frustrated to see how difficult it is to get people even notice you exists, not to say paying for it.

Our plan is more or less launching in PH, Reddit, HN along next two weeks , while iterating and sharing the process with you. Have found very helpful some material like the book from @levelsio.

We can help with: data related problems like implementing ML algorithms into your product, Python backend related issues (Django, Flask, and more...), and infrastructure management (Linux servers, hosting...).

On the other hand we are not so good with design and frontend, marketing, etc., if you see/notice we are doing something terribly wrong, just let us know :-)

    Howdy 👋

I'm Peter and I'm currently working through the problem of companies / makers building trust with their users. The end goal is to create something that naturally fosters a more collaborative relationship with their current/future users (hopefully) resulting in more consistent feedback and referrals. There's some more detail here: https://www.indiehackers.com/post/09e38a3b90

To understand if this is even a problem / if my message resonates with anyone I've thrown together a Ship page to before trying to build anything. I'd love to know if you agree, disagree or generally have any input.

I'm a product designer by trade so I'm happy to help anyone with branding, design or UX advice. So let me know if you need a fresh pair of eyes on something you've been working on.

    1. 1

Oh, I'd love to chat @Grend. I built up my whole company on trust/community. I think IH does this really well too.

@rosiesherry Awesome! I'd love to find out about your experiences and pick your brain a little 😄. I'll ping you a quick email

designing my mobile app...hate using design tools....having very little in terms of artistic talent

    1. 1

      What tools are you using?

Something like https://www.sketchappsources.com has a ton of out of the box design patterns you could use if you use Sketch.

Affinity designer comes with a free UI design pack as well: https://affinity.serif.com/en-gb/designer/

If you want something tool independent and covers pretty much anything you could be making then Google's material design is a good start: https://material.io

      1. 1

I am using adobe creative bundle...tried using flare for animating icons. I don't own a Mac

      2. 1

I'd like to second material design, especially if you aren't the most design inclined. They do a good job of describing "why" in their rationale if you want to read over the documentation. I've used https://materializecss.com for a number of sites (https://danger.world, https://taormina.io, https://www.print2press.com). Flutter (https://flutter.dev/) also comes with material components if you want to start from there for a cross-platform solution.

  36. 1

    Need help naming my idea.

I can help with Growth Hacking and building Digital Communities, as well as early-stage B2B product-market fit framing.

    1. 1

Do you have a prototype or an mvp made? Can we take a look at it?

    2. 1

Is that your idea? What about StarterFit - something along those lines. I think Fitwell is already a brand.

      1. 1

Hey @avtges. No my idea is interactive news that you essentially choose the right answer through a quiz-like format. It has some more exciting features, but that's basically it.

        Ideas so far are;

        • KnowNew
        • TapNews
        • ClickNews

You can see my lack of creativity...

        1. 2

Wow, that's actually cool. I'd get that app 😄 and I think you're on the right track.

          • QuizNews
          • TopQuiz (Topical Pop-Quiz)
          • Nuiz (Pronounced 'News')
          • Headline Hunt

I come up with good names when I'm occupied with something else. Maybe wash some dishes or organize your room.

          1. 2

I quite like TopNews & Headline Hunt. Thanks for the suggestions!

            1. 1

Maybe you could give me some advice on building a digital community from a large offline community? As well as PMF framing tips.

              1. 1

Sure thing. What is your current offline community? And why/where are you trying to digitise them?

                  1. 1

Wow that looks dope. Also the Instagram account looks sweet as hell.

What are the existing largest pools of relevant users out there? Is it Reddit? Is it Twitter? Is it Facebook?

I guess from there you can start designing content that may be relevant to those distinct audiences, and disguise your product as the content they are typically accustomed to. That's what I have been doing over at reddit.com/r/mobkitchen for the last 6 months or so. It is hard to really amass a following, but eventually, the numbers keep ticking on up.

        2. 1

Hey @Kickso, if you want.. I actually have a service where for $12 you can ask 100 people a question. Someone literally 10 minutes ago just tested 3 names for his product. anyway if you're interested it's https://scoops.io/

          1. 2

Hey @Chkrlee Scoops looks absolutely awesome. Love the website and design. Did you make it all? Thanks for the suggestion, will 100% keep it in mind when I narrow down the list with my partner.

            1. 2

Yes, all made (and remade, and remade again, ah the joys of a startup :) in house haha.

        3. 1

Can never resist a chance to play with words. I came up with a creative name but probably too corny 🙂.

          Testanews
          Or
          News testament

  37. 1

Coming up with a "hit it out the ballpark" idea! I swear I have ideas for things but for a multitude of reasons they don't pan out the way that I'd like.

I can definitely help out with the technology aspect of your startups!

Don't focus too much on the idea. Ideas are a dime a dozen, for the most part. What you should start with is a real pain that real people are having, and ideally, willing to pay for.

How do you find pain points? Get out and talk to people! Talk to colleagues, other IHers, people in your community, etc. The point is that you want to solve a problem that people actually have. That way you can know that you're not potentially wasting your time working on something that there may not be a need for.

      Good luck!

Echo the "get out and talk to people" advice. I have a service where for $12 you can ask 100 people a question and then interview them based on how they answered - if you're interested. https://scoops.io/ - I built it to literally solve this problem! hah.

I agree with the solving a pain. Talking to people is great but, I've heard a number of speakers talk about things that cause you pain...what would you change about something in your everyday life that could make it easier? I look for things I'm passionate about as well. I've found the idea I want to work on but, looking for a tech advisor/cofounder...let me know if you'd like to talk more. Good luck!

Looks very interesting! Very polished interface, good job. We are using Trello but will talk to my team to give it a try. Like the template thing and how easy is to switch from one to another.

Hello, just tried a demo, the experience was good.
One question that comes to mind is, for businesses that use MailChimp for emailing, is this supposed to replace MailChimp?

Oh great, I run a weekly newsletter - cloout.co, I was asking because it seemed like since I used MailChimp to send out emails if I needed to have the reply button I'd need to send the emails from your platform instead.
