I'm looking to build a simple web app and am lost on how to even start. I'm familiar with HTML, CSS, and JavaScript and know how to code a dynamic website but that’s it. What else goes into developing a web app?

I would suggest you write down what kind of app you wanna build. And after that, you could try to build a wireframe. These two things will help you understand and visualize the app you wanna build.
