What do you use for product analytics?
I used Google Analytics to track a desktop app usage, but plan to move to a better-tailored tool before GA will be sunset in July 2023. I have well over 1 million events/month. Can consider self-hosting too. Curious what fellow indie hackers may recommend?
Our team use PostHog, which is easier to use than Google Analytics.💻

Woah didn't know GA was being sunset. Looked into it but I think I don't quite understand the difference between UA and GA4.
If GA4 works for you, I'd also recommend checking out https://www.growthfyi.com/custom-ga. Although it seems a bit pricey the GDPR compliance + Ad-blocker bypassing is pretty sweet!

Hi Daniela. Thank you for the suggestion, but it's a stripped-down website analytics that is not relevant to my question about product analytics. (note: also the link does not work, I had to manually scroll through the page to find the section)

From my experience, Mixpanel and Amplitude are the top two product analytics tools.
I used Mixpanel quite heavily for two years and then started evaluating Amplitude. My conclusion was that they were very similar but with these main differences:
Their pricing models are also a bit different and if Amp is a lot cheaper for you, I’d go with that.
If they will cost you the same, Id go with Mixpanel! Also good to keep in mind other people might wanna use it and then the user friendly aspect is very important.

My general comment is that pricing of both of them is not really indie-friendly. Amplitude hides pricing, meaning it's tailored for large enterprises. And Mixpanel bluntly lies with this "starts with $25/month" since when you add any event traffic there, it very quickly jumps in thousands. Meaning also targeted for enterprise. Both have generous free tier so that you will have all of your data there, being fully vendor-locked.
I see. As you can suspect I used Mixpanel while on a freelancing mission, this not having to care about pricing!
I’ll let you know if I find an Indie Hacker friendly product analytics tool!
I use Amplitude. They have a free plan that has 10 million events per month and basic analytics included.
Not quite sure what features you use of Google Analytics. Didn't realise it's being sunset!
I use Pirsch Analytics, really happy with them. They are tracker-less, so it might not work for you.
I have previously tried MicroAnalytics, cannot recommend them as I never heard back from their support team when I had questions (regret my annual plan!)

Google Analytics has views for mobile apps - this is what I use. It's sunset in favor of GA4 which does not suit me.
I'm curious why GA4 does not suit you? I'm very new to Google Analytics so still not sure of the differences between UA and GA4

I use Mixpanel. If you have less than 100k users I can really recommend it. It's so easy to set up and build your own dashboard 🙌
Otherwise a self-hosted solution might be what you're looking for. Maybe Plausible.io?
I also use Mixpanel, and I highly recommend it! The price is too much though if you are not on a free plan

As for Plausible, in my opinion is a quite stripped-down web-analytics. I do not see how it can work for product analytics (think custom events, screens and so on).
