What do you use for your help docs?

Every side project I've ever worked on has needed help docs but the well-known tools, such as HelpScout, etc. are too expensive for a project that has no revenue, so I've always ended up hand-crafting something, usually using something like Eleventy or VuePress.

What is anyone else doing for help docs, and did you change once your side project started generating revenue?

    From my ZeroToFounder

Documentation is essential to any product, and writing it well is especially important for software. When you write good documentation, your users will thank you by using your product more often, increasing their productivity, and decreasing support costs — two benefits that help you save more time as a founder.

Writing help documentation is a tedious and time-consuming task, but it can be done. The trick is to find the right tools to make the job easier.

    • GitBook is a good tool that supports writing help docs and comes with generous free tiers supporting custom domains too.
    • HelpKit: If you are more into working on Notion docs, you can build a Help Docs portal with Notion using HelpKit

Sorry for the late response. I really like HelpKit but I don't use Notion. I'd love something like HelpKit but with something else on the back end. Maybe just a simple CMS.

Little biased but i use https://versoly.com/

It matches your brand, has fault tolerant search etc and if you host your marketing site on Versoly it will be in /help so better for SEO.

Sorry for the late reply. I was aware of Versoly - been following your podcast - but hadn't thought of it as something that could be used for a help site. I'll check it out!
