What do you use to build your newsletters?

Hey everyone!
I am doing a little research on services for creators to build, deliver and (in some cases) monetize from their newsletters.

At the moment this research is not very formal so I am looking for people that are interested on having a chat about this topic both here in the comments or via email 😄

What I am looking for is on the line of:

  • Which service are you using?
  • What do you like about it?
  • What don't you like about it?
  • Are you paying for it?

Thank you!!

Have a great day ☀️

I have a substack embedded on my website built with Notion.

I like it because it’s simple and clean, easy to setup. I don’t have any negative feedback at this stage. Currently on a free plan and not making $ from subscription.

I use Mailwizz and host it myself. I was paying $250 plus per month for a popular mail list app, now my monthly expenses are less than $10.

Hi Paolo, for my Secret Breakfast Newsletter I'm currently using Mailchimp - free tier, but I think I'll soon move to Ghost Pro - paid. Consider I'm writing a weekly newsletter, and I do not sell anything. It's a side project for now.

    Mailchimp

    Pros

    • graphic interface
    • full customizable
    • plenty of stats
    • automated emails (welcome email, etc..)

    Cons

    • a little on the heavy side

    • it's more a marketing tool than a writing tool

    • paid versions are expensive for me now

      Ghost

    Pros

    • good entry price (9.99/m)
    • basic minimal email and website template
    • easy and light interface
    • possibility to grow a website from the newsletter content
    • great SEO options
    • easy paid newsletter integration

    Cons

    • no automated emails (welcome, ecc..)
    • very basic stats

Hey Piero! Thnx very detailed and useful! What made you move, or thinking about moving, to the paid Ghost pro?

      1. 1

Basically the moving choice is motivated by the architecture of the content I wanna publish.

I want something to come out from the newsletter and live as a permanent content. Ghost makes this very easy and you don't have to copy/past/format according to the CMS of your choice.

And what do you do to build your email onboarding?

And that's also another interesting topic!

I recently posted a question but didn't get any single answer :-P

As far as I gathered a lot of this is offered as part of some services’ automation suite. So you can send emails when certain things happens for example: after a user signed up, after a certain amount of time passed and so on.

I understand that, and I have used Zapier to trigger some of those "events" with a third-party tool that has that automation with branches of execution etc. But just wondering what other tools are being used out there.

I use Revue and I answered most of your questions in a post about my newsletter publishing process. It there's anything else you're interested in, just let me know.

Read through the blog post and that's really interesting! Thnx for sharing it!

You're welcome, I'm glad it helps.

Using substack only to send the newsletter. Not for archives. It is easy to get started with. Not paying.

Thnx! What do you like about Substack?

    Hey there,

I’m building an Open Source newsletter tool and would be very curious what would be the most important features for you and your newsletter.

You can check it out on keila.io or on GitHub.

Squarespace, I love it because it has everything combined! Sociale media, website, newsletter (with blog on website), webshop. I pay €11 per month for it. I just wanted something that is easy and looks good.

First I had Mailchimp with carrd, but that just isn’t as nice as squarespace in my opinion.

Nice, thank you! Did you pic Squarespace mainly for its newsletter feature or you consider that more of a good additional perk?

      1. 1

It was a nice additional perk!

Which is always a good thing 😄

Thnx for this! Does convertKit integrate with tools like Zapier or IFTTT for automations, or they have it built into the tool?

Got it! Quite a lot of options then!
Do you use internal automations for follow up emails and such?
