What does "building in public" mean

I hear a lot about "building in public". But what does that actually mean?
I like to think that it can be whatever you want it to be...apart from keeping everything a secret.
The purpose of building in public, for me, is to keep myself accountable, share things I've learnt, and open up opportunities for feedback.
So many entrepreneurs just don't get that opportunity, especially independent makers and solo founders. There's not that group of colleagues or partners to discuss this all with.
Sure, there's the benefit of having people see and look at your product. But honestly, the bigger benefit is that the community you become part of provides a bit of levelling in the ups and downs of working outside of a traditional job.

Been trying to answer that for myself for a while.. and all I've learned is that it's probably not for me.
I've seen that Building in Public mostly works for products/people that serve the same market, it's just another distribution channel.

Akshat, I'm so glad to see you think it through and say no to it. So many people just jump on it because it is the hottest trend, but it really comes down to whether you feel right about it. Every person and business is different after all.
You're absolutely right, e.g. if someone's target audience is off the internet, I def think the time and effort are better spent elsewhere.

It means that you honestly expose you every (well, almost every) thing you are doing on your way.
For me, it's writing a blog and posting on twitter.

There's a "What's the point" point to get past and I'm still the wrong side of that but closing fast.
I don't really know what it means, so I just sharing what features is I'm currently making and share it on social media (linkedin). It just to make myself more productive, so I know when exactly when this features finished, and to make my feed more content, so it's not just look likes abandoned project.
