What does 'building in public mean to you.

Hey all, so there a lot of buzz about building in public, but what does it mean.

Just saying 'am building this and that' is that enough.

How much details should be revealed. Is the content for ur customer, fellow makers, backlink 😁.

Am not sure either so, #justasking.

    Hi!

I think that there is no clear answer to this question, but I'm totally new to it 😁

A few days ago, I decided to start building a project that I was thinking about for a while.
To make it fun and entertaining for myself, I decided to build it in public, and share all the progress, so I created a public Notion account and started.

    Notion example:
    https://www.notion.so/Service-ee84eae4569147c89f01eefcc55b3eb9

Also, I wrote a short thread with my top 3 reasons to do it:

But it would be nice to hear from experts what they think what building in public means exactly 😁

Thanks, so to summarise your point

      • sharing why your doing the project.
      • sharing ongoing progress of the project.
Is the starting point of doing in public.

I am no expert but you know what I would like, a non profit project sharing the how ?
I would love to see how people are using the no code or code to make the project itself. How they are thinking and designing the project. In simplest term, streaming as your building.

This might not make sense completely for a for profit start up.

Alot of show in public is called made in public.
Again this is what I think means building in public.
All the best with your project. Thanks for the reply.

That's interesting @Sherbakov especially the public Notion doc. Was curious how many visits you are receiving to the doc and how you are letting your audience know that you've added updates there?

Asking to understand the flow more as I am building something that will address this workflow (for audience to find and follow projects such as yours which is completely being built in public, and for makers to keep posting important chunk of updates from the doc as a feed so that you get more engagement!)

Thanks for asking and for good comments, @nitishrddy! It is the second day of the project, so, unfortunately, I don't have good answers 😁. For now, I'm planning to manually send updates and a weekly summary to my Twitter account.

Just in case, I quickly checked the Notion sharing updates options - it seems that it can only send them to Slack. I need to investigate it further but please, let me know if you find a solution.

Sorry I missed your reply. We're actually building something for this specific use-case. Essentially a platform at the intersection of a document tool and social network. You can push updates from a document directly into our feed / Twitter. Replies in the feed will come back and sit in the document allowing the notes to compound over time rather than be scattered across a feed.

We are figuring out if there is a way to do that from Twitter too. Essentially, post to Twitter from our tool and all replies received in Twitter can come sit in the document as replies at the relevant place!

hey @shaqqs building in public is really about building transparency in your work, and in parallel, the sharing will become marketing, exposure, and credibility for you and your projects.

You highlighted a super good point. Who is it for? To me, it is 200% for target audience. Why? Because we only have so limited time, our top goal is to make our project a success, so everything we do need to contribute to that.

I see a lot of creators being confused this with "documenting their journey" and they end up writing daily checklist and journal, and then sharing with other creators. This doesn't help them achieve the goals of the project and they then get discouraged and stop sharing.

I am now dedicating some of my time to help people to Build In Public, and potentially build out that non-profit guide you mentioned. I think this would really be valuable to a lot of people, and is something I love doing anyway. What are some of your other top questions in mind? Happy to help! You can DM me too https://twitter.com/kevon69

    Happy new year!

Thanks for your perspective, completely agree with the idea of focusing on the target audience. But I think from a platform like an indie hacker, I really appreciate when a maker shares what helped them get more conversions, Copy that worked, growth hack that worked, and what didn't work.

A lot of people to too focus on sharing milestone but am more interested in there learning on the way to the milestone. Maybe that selfish of me but I think that very valuable.

For example, My building in public tip: The most valuable source of getting the sign-up for my Mobile App is Medium hands down. I wrote a few "How to" post on medium and even to this day I get 2 to 3 sign up daily, I didn't even update them in a while but that what worked for me. Anyone focusing on a consumer service or SaaS or App should at least have a few good posts there.

I am really bad at Twitter, god knows how many time I have posted stuff and deleted them 5 seconds later :-) Thanks for the reach out. I will take you upon it. But looks like your DM is closed.

You're right, now that I think about it, there are 2 types of building in public.

        1. Create comrades by sharing learnings with other founders
        2. Create audiences by sharing your journey & how you're building to help them
Both are important because it is a long road.

That's really brilliant that you're able to get signups from Medium post! Do you know if the traffic comes from Medium's users or SEO via Google Search (using Medium's SEO)? Quite curious on that!

And thanks for pointing out the DM, I just realized I set it so that only followers can DM me! Changed now :)

I got luck with the seo and one of my post was published via a respected publisher on medium and was on page 1 for a while. Even now its on page for a year. The things is people are hungry for free post on medium so its easy to get eye balls as a non paywall post. I might write a post on that on IH once I start making some πŸ’ΈπŸ’ΈπŸ’ΈπŸ˜…

I believe luck goes to people who work hard :)!!
