What does everyone use for newsletters? Is the ConvertKit hype dead?

I think the "consensus" went from MailChimp to ConvertKit, but now I see a lot of people talk about moving away from ConvertKit.

What do you use for newsletters?

I am using mailgun with a self-hosted newsletter "engine" (for lack of a better word). I also used Amazon SES, but mailgun bought me over with their free tier ;-)

ConvertKit becomes irrationally expensive for just a newsletter unless you already have some plan to monetize it. With 2000 subscribers, 49$/month is way too much for it.

I considered them for drip campaigns, such as an e-mail based course, but in that case subscribers pile up and keep compounding, even if they are not getting new e-mails.

    Hi Samuel!

    I'm a community manager at https://www.phlywheel.com/.

We used to use ConvertKit, but got sick of it pretty quickly. I found it very finicky and cumbersome, it didn't really let us customize our newsletters the way we wanted.

We've since switched to Active Campaign. They have some great, simple design templates to use, which aren't as basic as ConverKit (which really only has capability for text – we love simple newsletters, but it's nice to have other options, too).

The funnels and email lists are also very clean and easy to use.

    Hope this helps!

If your requirements are relatively simple, both GetRevue and Buttondown are worth considering.

Sendinblue works for us - highly recommended - https://www.sendinblue.com/

I use SendGrid to send some newsletters for targetaudience.app. It's not the best marketing email platform but it does the job.
