What does Indiehackers use as their forum/community software?

I really like the implementation of the simple discussion forum. Are they using a version of discourse (discourse.org)?

Happy 2018!

Best,
Emilio

Courtland actually built it from scratch. See: https://www.indiehackers.com/about

Great, thanks for confirming. He, or someone else, should offer a community as a service product. I'm sure many people would like to start communities and have content + comments + forum + payments all in a nice neat package.

Yep, that's what I've been looking at. Looks really good.

The deeper story here is that someone is actually using Ember.js!

I'd love to hear the sordid back story into how that went down.

      1. 2

Just now seeing these comments. Ember is great, and I love it. It's gotten so much better since 2013 and only continues to improve. The developers behind it are solid, consistent, well-organized, and good at communicating. They do the little things right every month, and that adds up over the long term.

I predict that we'll see a resurgence of Ember apps in the future, but even if not, that's fine, because Ember itself will keep getting better regardless.

Perhaps Ember's greatest flaw is that it's somewhat monolithic. This makes the learning curve seem high. You can't just jump right in and start building components… you also need to learn how the router works. This is because Ember is meant to handle 100% of your single page web app's responsibilities.

With React, by comparison, you build components without knowing anything about the router, etc. Even though you have to learn that stuff eventually, the decoupling makes learning easier.

I suspect this will also change in the future, as the Ember team has made lots of headway separating the framework into individual packages that can work together.

Hmm, I've been pretty happy with either minimal JS or full-blown Elm apps, but I'll check it out again sometime.

My comment was driven by my observations from when Ember was new in 2013 and nobody I knew could get their apps working with it. I honestly thought it had just faded away. To be fair, I haven't been keeping an eye on the front end for a couple of years.

The IH forum is really nice, clean UX; I wouldn't mind using an open sourced version when I add forums to https://marketinghustle.xyz.

I know I would would check them a lot less if Courtland ever migrated them to Fb.

it's crazy it's looks like the project I thought, but I did not find similar before yours.

No. Please, God no! :) Facebook groups is such a mess. Don't build a community on other people's platforms. So many potential problems...

Facebook groups are convenient, yes. But we've got the resources, the ability, and the vision to make the Indie Hackers community into something much better, and so that's the plan for this year.

As a bonus, we get to avoid the existential risks that come from being locked into Facebook, as well as the negative (for some people) side effect of being forced to visit Facebook repeatedly just to interact with the IH community.

          1. 1

Thank you for that. Facebook is something I try to avoid unless I'm actively promoting something. It's just too much of a skinner box for me to trust I'll manage my time well once I start scrolling.

I think at the heart lies the fact that someone else's business goals don't have you or your users' best interests in mind, and when you don't control the code, the customer or the experience -- it can be damaging. There may be strategic reasons to go in that direction but those things do need to be thought through.

One recent example for me: Sitepoint uses Disqus for their comments below articles, and recently now that Disqus has embedded more advertising, I've been having a problem reading some of Sitepoint's articles. I'll be reading, then in the middle of my reading the viewport jumps down and changes focus to a video that starts autoplaying in the comments section. Talk about annoying! It has happened to me on several articles now. So, in this case it has cost them a viewer.

Using it as a marketing channel is a great idea. Building a critical element of your business around it is asking for trouble.

IH is a community. Using FB removes A TON of control for the owners.

Plus, the UI of FB groups is a nightmare. The IH UI is much, much better.

"Yes, but you got ton of new customers in return."

That's where people go wrong. You get sales, not customers. Amazon gets the customer.

A sale is short lived. A customer is a long term asset.

              1. 4

Exactly. I just finished reading The Everything Store, a book about Bezos and Amazon. It's quite crushing to see so many businesses learn this lesson the hard way as their brands were destroyed. Many of them saw it coming, but could do very little, because Amazon used its dominant position and market forces to strong-arm them into participating.

Fortunately, Facebook isn't in a position to do that with its groups product.

It's not always bad to use Amazon/FB etc. Just go into it knowing what will happen. Strong brands don't rely on Amazon, they have other ways to sell their product. Amazon is just a distribution arm.

Don't build your business around any of these companies.

Nobody is saying it's impossible. We're just saying it's not a wise decision to rely on these platforms. Diversify. Build a brand.

    2. 5

There's something to be said for making people work to find where the conversation is happening whenever a community is first forming. That way you only get those that really want to participate, not just drive-by commenters looking to spout off.
