Yuya Uzu launched his product one time on Product Hunt. After that growth came from continuous product improvement. People shared the app on blogs, probably because they found the app to be of high quality and useful.
This is the way.
Here is his app: https://pomofocus.io/
You do realize that if the guy DID any marketing, he could’ve grown it into something much bigger.
I’m not downplaying his success. Clearly, it’s a lot to achieve this without marketing. But you have to consider the opportunity cost.
Of course, but then you have to do marketing.
Imagine a world where you don't have to do marketing. Glorious.
Trouble is, this is telling a lot of us what we want to hear, to our likely detriment. (Confirmation Bias?)
I can show the opposite: zero work on product development and entirely focusing on marketing (aka talking to people) for 2 months caused the biggest spike in sales I've ever seen.
For me, talking to people is scary, but infinitely more rewarding than hacking away at features in private, which is a nice reliable source of dopamine and provides an often misleading sense of progress.
I really wish I didn't have to ever do any marketing, but it's gonna take a lot more than this to convince me I don't have to do it!
I guess we all know that marketing is required to grow something fast. What I like about this example is it shows that it is at least possible to grow something slowly without doing any marketing. It makes "no marketing" an option, if you get everything else right.
I wish that marketing worked fast! 😅 I'm clearly doing something wrong if that's the case...
But yeah, I take your point - I myself experienced an app taking off out of nowhere after being in the App Store for five years and not being updated for the previous three.
If you're prepared to wait, you might not even need to work on features at all - just wait for a global pandemic...
