I’ve been analyzing data from hundreds of local newsletters, and some fascinating trends have emerged. If you run a newsletter or are thinking of starting one, these insights can help you position yourself effectively.
It’s no surprise that the United States dominates (857 newsletters), but I also found strong numbers in Canada (62), the UK (60), and Australia (12).
Some of the most active cities include New York (32 newsletters), Los Angeles (15), and Washington (15).
Here’s how the top newsletter categories stack up:
📍 Community & Neighborhood – 326 newsletters
📰 News & Current Events – 307 newsletters
💡 Technology & Innovation – 83 newsletters
🎭 Events & Entertainment – 81 newsletters
🏡 Real Estate & Housing – 64 newsletters
Average description length: 101 characters
Median description length: 84 characters
Shortest descriptions: 35 characters (25th percentile)
Longest descriptions: 143 characters (75th percentile)
🇦🇺 Australia – News & Current Events (5), Community & Neighborhood (3)
🇨🇦 Canada – News & Current Events (22), Real Estate & Housing (8)
🇫🇷 France – Community & Neighborhood (1), Food & Dining (1)
🇩🇪 Germany – Events & Entertainment (1), News & Current Events (1)
✅ Some niches are underserved – Business, Arts & Culture, and Family & Parenting have fewer newsletters.
✅ There’s room to grow globally – While the U.S. dominates, other countries are catching up.
✅ Shorter descriptions work – The best-performing newsletters keep things concise and clear.
If you’re running a local newsletter, this data can help you fine-tune your approach and find the best niche to focus on.

Thanks for sharing this! I’m in the middle of validating a very specific pain point for marketers (around managing data manually), and seeing your process helps me refine my own.
How did you handle user interviews early on? Any tip that helped you go from "interesting idea" to real feedback?
Thank you for engaging with my post.
For this project, I didn't validate my idea with user interviews. Here is how I validated the project:
I observed that Local Newsletters are beginning to gain more attention than they used to.
This could be due to the fact that the growth of AI content is forcing people to yearn for human interaction, so communities are more important than before.
To have more insights into what successful local newsletters are doing, I wanted to see a comprehensive Local newsletters, but there was none - so I decided to create one.
To validate there is a need for this - a. I did some keyword research with Ahrefs and found some keywords with low KD and about 100 monthly search volume. I also saw a couple of requests from residents of several communities looking for a local newsletter that covered their community. That was enough validation for me.
So my approach is to solve 2 problems at the same time:
a. Lead residents of communities to a catalog of local newsletters they can choose from. Helping them solve a problem of 'what are the local newsletters for my community'.
b. Provide useful data and facts about local newsletters for current Local Newsletter Operators and people who intend to start one.
I hope this answers your question. If not, I am happy to share more information with you.
Yes! That's pretty good! The problem here is that we are actually pre-product.. So, we need to interview users to define our ACP... So, it's more challenging.. But we are trying so! Thanks for the advice!
Hey Michael, just wanted to let you know that the logo on your website is not loading correctly.
Thank you for your observation, are you referring to my site logo or the logo of one of the listed sites?
Why don't you visit your website and find it out. It's highly visible.
Thank you, I fixed it.
