What I learned by spending 5 seconds on 30 landing pages

Yesterday, I offered to spend 5 seconds on your landing page: https://www.indiehackers.com/post/ill-spend-5-seconds-on-your-landing-page-and-71f019c1d6 and tried to guess what the business does.

I've reviewed 30 landing-pages so far, and here's a summary of what I've learned -

  1. I think the domain matters. Few domains gave me an idea about what to expect on the landing page.

  2. The "BOLD TEXT" on your hero section is the top attention grabber. Good landing pages had their messaging so clear that I did not have to think.

  3. The 'sub-text' where we typically hide our 'core value' is not as important as your headline.

  4. Anything over 8-10 words in the sub-text felt like "too much" information to handle. If you have to "explain" it, it ain't working.

  5. You don't have to focus on the "benefit" every time. Simply tell me what you do in the simplest possible words.

  6. Keep the text in hero-section minimal.

  7. Images were not as important as I thought they'd be. In fact, in most of the cases, they were a distraction.

  8. We think our visitors will get it. Unfortunately, most of them won't. #hardtruth

  9. Hero section is the most important section of your website. Testimonials/Review section is second.

  10. You may want to highlight the pain-point being addressed. Tell me what pain I'm not aware of. Don't explain it to me.

  11. You can improve your landing page conversions by using clearer messaging, uncluttered design and some social proof.

Thank you to everyone who shared their landing pages. I hope you found my review and the questions I shared useful.

Ours was one of the sites you reviewed. Your 5 second take was helpful, and so is this! Thanks for sharing.

Happy to help. Would appreciate a response to the questions I asked and whether my guess was right. I'm trying to find out the characteristics of good hero sections. Thanks!

Could you possibly share top3 websites, based on your review?

    1. 2

That'd be very difficult for me to do. I'm yet to hear back from founders whether my guess was right.

In general, the sites that put very clear and short messaging were the easiest.

@TestimonialGuru reviewed the landing page for a SaaS that I am working on.

Gotta say that the points he highlighted helped me.

I had the messaging all wrong - non-existent in fact.
