'What if your startup fails?' I get this question for each product demo. Whats the best answer?

Hello hello Indiehackers,

We are a building https://csvbox.io - its B2B SaaS.

I do a lot of product demos each week. A common question I get is, what will happen to the product if your company shuts down?

We are a small bootstrapped team and it is a legit concern for some of the larger companies.

I am not sure of how to respond to this question. Any help appreciated?

PS:

  • We are team of 18.
  • csvbox.io is one of the 15 micro-saas applications that we have developed.
  • Initially csvbox was developed from funds from our other apps.
  • Now csvbox in self sustainable and cash-flow positive with 3 full time developers.

One option is to give them some kind of assurance may be in legal contract that if startup fails than the code will be open-sourced or they would be provided the source code along with instructions to self-host.

Would this also signal that we have already considered failing as an option? and make us look more risky?

why would it look more risky? you are alleviating the risk by providing a clear path in case of failure.
It would look risky only to investors but you said your problem is getting large companies to sign the deal?

I get your point. May be I was overthinking. Open sourcing in case of failure seems to be a reasonable argument.

I get this same question, this is what I tell them:

Because we are bootstrapped we've always had to ensure that our operating costs are covered by our revenue. We have loyal customers and we're growing steadily, so the risks are no greater than with larger alternatives.

I then often also point out that, unlike with larger established players, you're dealing directly with a small team who respond to feature request etc in a matter of hours or days, not months or years. That doesn't work with everyone so I'm careful who I make that pitch to.

This is great. And its 100% true - Ill try this for sure.

      Thanks for sharing!

I am curious , how do you go about marketing csvbox.io ?

To be honest we are struggling with marketing. We have adopted a product-led marketing approach. Most of the leads come from paid ads, product listings community engagement forums like Indiehackers.
