What is a free trial/paid conversion rate for a SaaS?

My problem

Hey everyone, lately we've finished first place on Product Hunt and got 300 hundred signups.

We converted some of these users into paid users. However I think the number is pretty low (less than 10%).

I'd be curious to know:

  • what is a good conversion rate from website visit to free trial
  • what is a good conversion rate from free trial to paid

Thank you for you time!

There are some interesting benchmarks here - https://microconf.com/sois-report-2021

Product Hunt traffic is probably not going to give you data you can rely on for future traffic, but I'd say <10% is indeed quite low so you can definitely try to improve that metric.

    A few pointers.

    1. What could be the possible reason for not having enough conversion rates? Is it because of not enough features or pricing or security issues or something else ?
    2. Where are those customers (less than 10%) from? (Location).
    3. Do you know the location of leads you lost?
    4. Do you see any similarity in people who actually sign up and not?
    5. Have you provided any launch offers?
    6. And you can provide custom pricing based on location. Something like Purchasing Power Parity Pricing which most products provide. It can be easily done through below options.
      API based approach: https://github.com/rwieruch/purchasing-power-parity
SaaS solution: Paritydeals (Provides Public API, VPN Security, Banners etc.)

    Congrats on getting paying users!

Conversion rate varies a lot depending on market. I would say you shouldn't make any big decisions on the launch metrics except maybe if it's definitely your target market.

See what the rates are in a month or two! That traffic will probably be more interested in your product, rather than just checking out the front page.

Got it - thank you very much Fredrik for your input!

In my opinion this is a normal number of conversions for traffic coming from PH.

The average free trial conversion rate for opt-in trials (email only required) is 25% while for opt-out (credit card) it is 60%. You then have the likes of Loom and Notion which have free plans but with capped usage - this conversion can vary but typically sits in the middle at around 40%

What method are you currently using?

Currently using opt-in trial (no CC required), conversion rate is about 10%. I suspect that we have many curious people rather than people actually interested in cold emails
