What is a good newsletter open rate? Mine is 20%

I have 7,100 email subscribers and each time I send an email, I get about a 20% open rate.

Is this a good number?

Open rates drop over time. So it depends on how long you've been going for. I have a similar list size to yours and my open rate is around 45%. But I've been going for 6 months (and it's slowly but surely dropping).

You could probably tweak your sign up flow to. The two key stages are:

    One - Confirmation Email

The beauty of the confirmation email is that it forces the customer to track down your initial email, preventing it from getting left behind in spam.

Two - Ask user to Add to Address Book

As spam filters continue to tighten, this really is the only foolproof way of guaranteeing your email gets delivered to your recipients' primary inbox. And as you'll see later on it does make a big difference to open rates.

If you'd like more info I wrote a pretty detailed case study how you can improve open rates. All based on my hard numbers etc ...

Thank you for your response. What is your click rate?

Pleasure, and well, it varies. Sometimes I write my full case study in the email (with no CTA). But when I use CTA to "read the full article". Between 5% - 11%.

It's very contextual though. Everyone runs their own race on email depending on what your CTA / product is. Like, I'm getting people to read free articles so it's an easy clikc through.

I wouldn't get bogged down in comparisons too much. More about how you could improve your numbers (for your product).

I think 20% is okay. 50% to 70% is excellent. i think it depends on the topic and what exactly your target group is.

let's say you are a food retailer, your newsletter reports about offers. then it shouldn't be over 10%. amazon mails end up in my trash quickly when I'm not looking for anything.

on the contrary, if you have a newsletter that talks about personality development, then your opening rate will be much much higher.

niche newsletter = normaly better open rate, fewer users
users who register there, want exactly this content.

CTA's get you in the promotion tab. Use request for "reply to" as it is better for inboxing. Once you are in the promotion tab, open rates drop 70%.

May I know your product? How are you monetizing the newsletter?
