What is success when we talk about paid/private communities?

What does a "best scenario" looks like?

    depends on outcomes.

if it's financial, then, it's a literal figure / number.

if it's not about financial, then, it's most likely some other relationship-driven outcome or emotional.

is that what we're talking about?

yes absolutely its about outcome. Of course that changes from a community project to another. Product led community, community kick from scratch, creator's community (behind a NL, podcast), brand community, etc. And I did'nt even talk about physical ones like coworking spaces etc.

        that's right. 💯

Ive been running a paid community for 15 years, and long ago broke it down to three components: https://dangerouslyawesome.com/2012/11/the-three-necessary-ingredients-for-community-do-you-have-them/

Yes, I think basically what Alex says.

Then if you add the 'paid' aspect of it, it really means that it's a business, and businesses need to be sustainable and to have some kind of reliable income.

It doesn't mean there has to be paid membership, this is what most people jump to, and I guess it is the holy grail of communities, just like SaaS is the holy grail of online products. We should be creative in how we find ways to fund things.

With Ministry of Testing, pre covid, for example the events basically funded the majority of things. This gave us the ability to do many other things 'for free'.

Agree - paid membership is great but only one way and not without it's downsides!
