What is the best forum software ? in 2018

Because you spend all your time adding basic little features that people expect on a forum instead of building the community. You will probably also make a bunch of stupid mistakes that cause security problems.

I've just written a new forum package to use across a few of my new sites and there is so much to consider to make it not feel like a cheap blog comment system. I really wish I could have used discourse or something and still regret NIHing it. I'll probably continue to regret it for a long time lol.

waste of time, reinvent the wheel is useless when you have no competitor.

Actually IH is a direct competitor of BlackhatWorld/Reddit.
Since those two are here since long time the only strategy
is to propose a new UI so it was a good decision to code it.

the others that you are talking about are made by teams, i'm solo and i dont have that time.

and the real question is does it worth to take that amount of time to code while you can use a modulable framework who is re-usable who has already a documentation.
