What is the best way to identify an industry with big market (TAM)?

I have recurring question about how to effectively go about finding something to work on. I tend to get wrapped up in projects which I think are interesting, but the problem (and total addressable market) isn't all that big and thus it's hard to find users/customers and warrant spending all my time building a business.
