I really liked the idea and design of buymeacoffee.com . However, I really do no understand their monetization strategy. Does anybody have any insights on how they are making money?

I believe they take a percentage of the payments. During their PH launch they indicated that they would waive this fee (referred to as a platform fee) to PH users who signed up:

As per their FAQ: "BMC takes 5% platform fee every time a supporter buys you a coffee. So when a creator receives $100 from supporters, BMC will earn a $5 platform fee."

Paypal is perfect to accept payments, but I'll tell you some reasons why creators prefer BuyMeACoffee.
Finally, it is often much friendly and casual to buy you a coffee than requesting to donate. Hope this is reason enough to try BMC 😊
