What is the point of doing good work?

I recently asked a friend:
“What is the point of doing good work?
Everything ends.
The universe doesn’t care.
So why should I?”

He responded:
“Yes, everything ends.
But that doesn’t make it pointless.
Is a movie pointless because it ends?

And yes, the universe doesn’t care.
But why should that matter to you?
Do you think much about the universe when you dance?

The point of dancing is to simply enjoy it.
And dancing to the beat is more enjoyable than against it.
That is why you should do good work.
You’ll enjoy it more.”
