What is your average work hours in front of your computer?
by
karanveer
What is the
Main job 8h per day, mostly all day in front of the screen and afterwards 4-5h per day for ERA.
Well, I do want to say that is a slighlty higher end of the screen time, do you have something like a routine or exercise to rest your eyes?
I checked out ERA. Who are you targetting exactly with this?
Similar to many of the comments here, day job is usually around 8 and then a few on my own stuff during the week. But one difference for me (and the reason why I'm chiming in with a comment) is that I'm trying to be intentional about less screen time over the weekends. It's really hard and I'm not great at it, but I think it pulls my daily average when considered over a whole week to be closer to 8hrs/day.
For me it is around 7 hours of screen time every day at my job, and then at least 3 hours at home - making side projects, programming, etc.
So ~10 hours in total. But as it is super hard to keep up with this kind of schedule every day, I do pauses after every ~3 hours for going for a walk, jogging, or having a longer lunch.
Yeah, that is quite a lot.
The schedule thing is on point, I want to know if you use anything in particular to rest your eyes from screen strain damage it might have in long run?
Only pauses every 30-60 minutes for not looking to a PC for at least 15-20 mins. :)
And I still have eagle eyes :)
It's around 8 hours for me, coding. I make sure I get at least a couple of hours every other day bouldering/cinema/family so I get a good solid downtime. Helps creativity and focus. I spent 2018 through to 2020 burnt out and not realised it. Not sure I've fully recovered yet or I might just be getting old!
I totally understand what you are saying, feeling burnt out but realizsing when its too late. However, that's a healthy option to get a few hours off, so kudos on that. I am still trying to find a proper work - life balance but unfortunately, a coder as well, it is quite hard. How do you find the work-life balance?
Also, do your eyes get tired/drained/blinking infrequently or do you have any eye care routine in place that you could share and save us some eye damage?
Re the work/life balance, I've gotten into the habit of 'requiring' that I go climbing/running/walking, especially even if I'm not in the mood. Even 20 minutes of climbing a few times in the week when I'm not in the mood has, over the course of a couple of months, made a big difference to my mood. I was/am addicted to coding. I love it, but, it's draining. Not balancing led to a couple of long depressive episodes for me. I was caught off guard by how depressed I became which became a vicious cycle of low mood, more coding, less balance. I feel sooo much better now but I'm not at 100% yet. Remaining vigilant I know I'll get there. I think this is the human condition!!
And regarding eyes, it's funny you should ask. I had an eye test just recently and was told I had 'Macular Edema.' Common for developers who don't have good eye-resting habits. Blurred vision (especially in low light) is what I'm experiencing. I'm looking for an app that'll blank the screen for 10 minutes out of every hour. The optician pretty much insisted I look at using something like this but I just havn't gotten round to installing/looking for one yet! Thanks for the reminder - I almost forgot about this!!
And I hope you're on a good path to work/life balance.
those climbing thing you mention, i might try it once i get more fitter, but i can resonate because i have started doing walks per se.. even if im not in the mood i just go and walk...its early so cant say much but its helping i think.
Eyes, yes, that i am aware as i am having something myself, but unaware, and i came across nothing prominent. All the exercises are there, but its hard to keep up. If it helps i am building a tool/ more like a simple chrome extension that will act as a reminder to rest eyes every 20 minutes for a few seconds. It's nothing new that I am doing since the technique is called 20-20-20 eye rule and recommend by eye docs. Its in dev. so Lmk if you're interested. Plus once I beta launch i could use some feedback from someone like you.

More than 8 hours, and that just on the computer. That's not including micro-research on my phone and tablets.
Okay, that's more than average as i am suspecting you must be doing 4-5 hrs on phone+tablets post 8hrs of work?
Also, how do you manage to take care of your eyes in this high screen time exposure?
Luckily on the phone, I only have around 2-3 hours in cumulative, then it's a wrap for the day.
Yeah, you could become "screen fatigue" in this scenario. I overcome this by:
7-8 hrs a day for my main job at day and in the evening and night at least 3-4 hrs for my side hustles and freelancer job 😁... so around 12hrs per day.
well. That's quite a lot.
Currently Im working on MakersDiary a web app for indie devs to track and manage their projects and side hustles and to easy share their journey in public. :)
No I don't have anything... .unhealthy I know ... Do you know a good eye care routine?
However i want to say in the end i have tried to pitch my own tool that i am working on, you can ignore that, just focus on the 5 exercises in the thread..
Around 12+ hours. I know, not healthy!
well, don't your eyes get tired? Dryness/ Blinking infrequently? etc..how do you manage your eyes health?
I take short breaks (15+ mins) every now and then while having a tea/coffee (not at the desk).
I recently checked and eyes are fine so far.. hope it stays that way.
well, you're on the right path, i recently discovered 20-20-20 eye rule and couldn't follow it thoroughly and now i am making a reminder chrome extension for that lol.
Kudos to you.
Easily over eight hours, usually around 10-14 😅
wow, 14hrs. Please tell me you're at a higher position at Google or Apple or Amazon or Facebook or Microsoft.
Also, how do you take care of your eye health in regards to all this?
Hmm, yeah so not all of this is strictly "work" I would say.
But some days I do work 14 hours. There is also learning a language, watching the odd anime etc.
I guess my eyes are fkd
you dont say.
What anime are we talking about?
Many, the most recent one was Tokyo Revengers. Can highly recommend it
More than 8 hrs..
and how do you take care of your eyes tiredness from all the screen? Do you have any relief plan/exercises in routine? Do Share!
I answered 6hrs but it could easily be 4hrs.... the point being - it's difficult to me to distinguish what is work and what isn't.
i.e. if I'm browsing and researching (collecting impressions and ideas) is that work?
I've actually come across this dilemma and I totally understand what you are saying. It's like, when you start working from home, your home doesn't feel homely but the moment you wakeup to the end of the night, it is all office thoughts and this is psychological.
So yes, it can be considered work. Although 4hrs - 6hrs is regarded decent, do your eyes feel tired or do you have any eye exercise routine in place?
