What is your biggest problem as a freelance/contract developer? Where did you find your 1st client?

I have been slowly orientating my career towards going full-indie for a year now and have been almost exclusively contracting for clients on medium to long-term projects since then.
When I first started out I found it difficult to get past the blockade of recruiters telling me I wasn't experienced enough to move into the UK contracting market and to find projects with clients that would allow remote working.
How did you get started, and what was your biggest barrier to going solo?
Do you ever have trouble dancing the line between meeting client expectations but not letting them treat you like a normal employee?

Do you primarily filter out people based on their reviews on Upwork? Is price a major factor? - from what I know about those platforms it can be difficult to compete on price due to different costs of living abroad.
